    Dude, your videos are incredible! I'm a renter and the oil furnace in my house ran out of fuel a year ago. I added more to the tank, and watched your videos on bleeding the system. It started working again, and then stopped a week later. I started watching all of your troubleshooting videos and did the following: Flushed the fuel lines, removed and cleaned the pump filter, made sure the electrodes were set properly, checked and cleaned the gun assembly, and replaced the nozzle. It turned out the nozzle was clogged, and I saved my landlord several hundred dollars. Man, thanks for making such good videos. Feels pretty awesome being able to fix things on your own like this!

    Annual service is recommended for all oil furnaces. The use of liquid fuel can plug nozzles and there is always some soot. If you have been changing oil filters that helps a lot. Eventually the electrodes will wear down and the spark gap gets too wide. Check my oil furnace playlist. There are a number of vids on service of the burner Hope this helps.

    The tiny piece in the nozzle is called a turbulator, I pull mine out and carb clean it and reinstall! Works great!

    Thank you very much for your ever so informing videos, they help me understand more for my fuel oil class than just reading a book. One correction though according to Delavan's Nozzle packet a Type A= Hollow Cone nozzle, Type B= Solid Cone, and Type W= Semi-Solid/Semi-Hollow cone spray pattern. Thank you so much for your videos though they truly help with thoroughly understanding everything.

    After running out of oil and finally getting our emergency refill, the furnace would not fire as usual. I replaced the fuel filter, but frustratingly unable to reignite the furnace. I was lucky enough to find your video tutorials and followed step by step. I checked the transformer, electrodes and fuel gun. The electrodes and nozzle had quite a build up of carbon. I cleaned them up with a copper brush and sprayed them down with a spray cleaner, and decided to disassemble the nozzle. I soaked the nozzle parts in a cleaning solvent but the tip was extremely clogged. Was not worth the time, effort and solvent cost and just bought a new nozzle for $5.00. Reassembled everything this morning and double checked the electrode gaps as stated in your other video. Well, it fired up instantly and bellowed quite a bit of smoke from my previous misfires...thankfully, it was nothing more than 30 seconds of soot that eventually cleared up!
    Thank you for your amazing video tutorials, it got us back in a cozy temp!

      What happens is there is garbage in the oil on the bottom and the top of the level. When you run out, the garbage can get into the nozzle.
      Glad you got it going.

    You can, but as with all nozzle changes, you need to test smoke. This requires a smoke pump. If you dont have one, check your smoke pipe periodically for soot buildup. Also combustion air is very important. Try to set it with just no smoke on top of the flame. Do not put too much combustion air. Hope it helps.

    A is hollow spray, W is semi solid or general purpose, correct you should replace same to same. Delevan nor Hago says not to touch the sintered filter, that one caught me by surprise. We recommend replacing the nozzle every fall (before use) and every 750 - 1000 hours depending on conditions, bad fuel will destroy the nozzle internals quickly.

    Hi again. Thank you again Sir for all the hard work you put into these videos!! I have a nozzle leaking issue that I just can't seem to fix on my oil fired water heater. I tried teflon tape on the threads to no avail. Then I tried yellow tape on the threads and also cleaned the pump screen which was filthy. There was no leak for 2 to 3 weeks. Now all of a sudden, it is leaking again. I keep a clean paper towel on the floor under the burner and check it periodically for oil stains. It was clean up until now. I don't have a pressure gauge, but am currently looking into one. Just can't decide on which one to get. Do you have any suggestions about the leaking nozzle??

    • @grayfurnaceman
      @grayfurnaceman  9 років тому

      +anotherbri You probably do not have a leak in the nozzle threads. Those threads do not seal. The seal is the nozzle flange to the nozzle holder. You may have a seal leak in the pump. You could also have a venting blockage. If the unit "rumbles" on startup, you may have venting or heat exchanger blockage. Hope this helps.

    just wanted to thank you for all the helpful furnace videos. your cautions and tips really came in handy like loosening both ends of the copper feeder tube so you don't have to bend it. love it. quick question, i replaced my 80 degree nozzle with a 70. you alluded to the fact that this can cause problems. please explain? furnace is running fine as far as i can tell.

    • @grayfurnaceman

      If it uses a pressure burner, lubricating oil will not work. The oil will not separate into droplets. The only way it will work is to preheat the oil, then aireate.

      Waste oil is a completely different system. There are waste oil burners that look somewhat similar to the burner shown, but they have a preheater for the oil and use a small compressor that blows air across the hot oil to burn it. Not a simple system.
