Thanks again Dave and Lab Rats! That looks like a particularly fascinating bit of kit, and may well be the only working version in existence if repaired successfully. 🙂
Hey Matthew, the camera is currently with it's new owner who will fix it once the he can get the parts for it. We will have a follow up to this video once the CV50 is up and running again. Hopefully soon! Thanks for watching!
Yay! First view 🤩. I have the M8U with VTR and it’s mint. Such a cool piece of tech. Just wish the battery held a charge though. Would love to sling the VTR around my neck and use as a field recorder hooked up to my Tyco cam.
Congrats Mason! I've had the CV-50 sitting around for years and have always thought it was quite unique. I didn't think it warranted being featured on a longer episode of DRVL so I came up "Retro Gear Quick Take" concept though I don't think I mentioned that in the video. LOL
Hey Dave, i was looking for this model since you uploaded the video, i was completely fascinated because i love the Sony M8! Now i found this camera in my country, and of course i bought it! But unfortunately, it doesn't work properly. What happened to yours? Mines can't able to close the cassette door, with or without a tape, looks like a gear problem because after loading the tray, it makes a terrible sound and ejects. Neither produces a video signal from the VCR adapter :(
I gave the camera to a friend who fixes old cameras. There's a cassette carriage (something like that) that is unique to this camera and is damaged. My friend is trying to find a parts camera so he can finish fixing the CV50. It's a unique camcorder that I thought was worthy of restoration.
@@davesretrovideolab2709 Oh, that's a pity. I was thinking to get some spare parts from a M8 i have, but i didn't know about this cassette carriage. Thanks for the info!
Hey Cyclone Cord! Here's the latest with the CV-50. I sent it out for repairs and my understanding is it's not necessarily a total dud, but darn close to it. My CV-50 has several issues which go beyond just a bad cap problem. My repair tech said he needs a donor CV-50 for parts. The parts needed are a flex cable and a few other items. So right now it's kind of dead in the water, but I haven't given up hope yet.
Great question. I gave my CV-50 system to Dr. Smart, the guy who fixes my retro tech, and he’s currently waiting for a donor camera to grab parts from in order to restore my CV-50.
@@davesretrovideolab2709 I bought one myself and the ejecting was getting stuck and I accidentally took off one of the loading sliders. Eject works now but I need to put in that part back somehow for it to load the tape properly. I hope I get it to work.

Can't wait to see this come back and working. I wonder how small studios would have used this
as they had very very small budgets.
I have good news for you VT. Getting the CV-50 is currently in the works.
Learn something new every day. I always pronounced AIWA as “I uh wuh”
Had a stupidly big AIWA boom box in the 80’s.
I’m not entirely sure I was pronouncing AIWA properly either.
Your 80s AIWA boom box was totally awesome. Whatever happened to it?
@@davesretrovideolab2709 stoped working and thrown in the garbage. Stupid things we do when young.
@@AcePaul 😱
I say "Ae-wuh" because I'm uninformed.

@@TENSE1983videos Good luck. We're all counting on you. :)
Wow! Have never seen one of these.
Aiwa was not part of Sony. Worked for retailer who sound a bazillion Aiwa Walkman knock-offs. Not Sony quality…
