  • I've finally made the decision to DITCH Google Drive in favor of an end-to-end encryption solution like Sync.com! After a lot of research, I decided this is better than client side encryption, and then made the switch to this Google Drive alternative. Get 10% off or sign up for free: www.sync.com/ats

The fact that this video was sponsored by the subject of the video -- it's an advertisement, in other words -- should be disclosed much earlier and more clearly in the video, as well as in the title.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  Рік тому +19

As per UA-cam rules, the paid sponsorship is clearly disclosed at the beginning of the video. But what I believe you're accusing me of is deceit - taking a bribe to promote a company.
I realize I can't please everybody, but when I do my due diligence, decide on a company I like, switch, approach them about sponsoring a video and then have a "includes paid sponsorship" message within the first 10 seconds of the video...I'm not sure what would make you happy. 😂

    • @code8986
      @code8986 Рік тому +79

@@AllThingsSecured I didn't say that you broke UA-cam's rules and I certainly didn't accuse you of deceit or anything else -- all of that is you putting words in my mouth. In fact, I acknowledged that you *DID* disclose the fact that the video was sponsored by Sync later in the video.
What I did say is that the sponsorship by Sync should be disclosed at the beginning of the video, which it isn't, and in the title, which it also isn't.
The fact the video is sponsored *IS* disclosed at the beginning, but there is a critical difference between being sponsored by some other entity and being sponsored by *THE SUBJECT* of the video. The latter makes the video an advertorial and *THAT* fact is what should be disclosed earlier and more prominently, but isn't. It isn't mentioned in the title and it isn't mentioned in the video until 7:43.
This isn't about pleasing me or any particular person, and it has nothing to do with UA-cam rules -- it's a matter of ethics. It's up to you if you want to abide by basic ethical standards or not, but if you want even moderately informed viewers to trust you -- especially on a topic like security -- I think you should consider doing so.

@Co De I 100% agree with you. There is a degree of clickbait on this video that the author sneakily wanted to circumvent in a tactical way, but in the end there are some ethical concerns as the ones you outlined.
Thanks to this comment I didn’t wasted minutes watching a clearly sponsored video only to realize that it’s indeed sponsored almost close at the end of the video.
It’s very dishonest move, if I can be honest and specially in such a sensitive topic such as security.

I signed up for the trial version of Sync and have already found two things about it that worry me. 1. Upload speed is definitely on the slow side. I plan to use Sync primarily to request files from clients and some of those files may be on the large side. I don't want to worry about the clients getting impatient watching the upload progress bars slowly moving across their screens and giving up and exiting out of the upload. 2. When I did some test file request uploads, all the files I uploaded had the date appended to the end of their filenames. I find that annoying and unnecessary. I tried reaching out to Sync about disabling the feature that appends dates to the end of filenames multiple times and ways (email, Twitter, Facebook) but haven't heard back from them yet. I really like a lot of the features of Sync and hope it can work for me. I'll give them a few more days to respond, but right now between the upload speed, or rather lack thereof, and what appears at the moment to be the inability to respond to customer support related inquiries, things are not looking good for them to be my next choice for my cloud sharing service needs.

(To the inevitable "why do you care?" comments) I usually refrain from recommending black-box software to my friends and family for reasons that I hope are obvious. As a software developer, I'm interested to know what exactly the Sync clients are doing on my devices, and I'd like to validate the company's claims about their product without breaking any weird ToS about "reverse-engineering" or "de-compiling" or similar. I'm not interested in their server-side software, since I could not verify that their servers are running any specific source, open or not, and the company's claims here are about client-side encryption. I respect that not everyone cares whether any part of the source code is available, since most people don't want to read source code, but I always appreciate having the option, again for reasons that I hope are obvious.

To keep things secure in Google Drive, encrypt your files prior to uploading them. This *could* work for shared files, you just have to make sure no one uploads a file that hasn't been encrypted. As for clients, well, that's probably not the best solution.

Is there a way to view video files in the vault on a device such as a phone or PC without having the file on the PC or phone? Can you play it from the cloud only? Second question. Can the website be set up so my team member and I don't see or have access to our private folders like the vault? Like do we each have our own vault? Why can't you? Sync works in a similar manner to Dropbox. You have a single folder called Sync and everything inside that folder (to include sub folders) is automatically synced to your computer. If you accidentally deleted the folder from your computer and it's inside your Sync directory, it would be deleted from Sync too. However, Sync uses versioning for files, so you could log into the Sync web console, restore your deleted folder, and then it would sync back to your computer.

  • @NoEgg4u

Unless I am missing something, the encryption is happening on the server's computer. That means that you have to put 100% trust into that computer, and the people that control that computer.
That computer is owned by, and controlled by, compete strangers.
They can (and probably do) build a profile on your in-the-clear data that you upload to them.
Yes, you have an encrypted tunnel between you and the server. But once your data reaches the server, it gets decrypted. Ergo, those that control the server have 100%, in-the-clear, access to your uploaded files.
The server might encrypt your files upon receipt (you have no way to confirm whether or not they do so, no matter what they claim). But they might first index your files for your profile, before they encrypt your files.
If you have business trade secrets, or any files that can result in great harm if made available to others, then you are nuts for uploading those files to complete strangers.
It makes no difference that those servers are run by big tech companies. You are handing over your confidential data to complete strangers. And we already know that big tech companies spy on nearly everything that we do. And those are the people that you are going to upload your personal files to?
The executives could have a master key, to decrypt any files that they are storing. It is simple for them to have master keys, and there is no way for you or anyone to know.
The only safe way for you to share sensitive files with a 3rd party platform is for you to encrypt your files on your own, local, computer.
Upload only files that you have already encrypted.
Yes, this makes it inconvenient for both you and the people with whom you are sharing your files. But privacy and security comes at the price of convenience.
And if you ever become a person of national interest (post goes viral, running for public office, involved in a criminal case, win the lottery, write a hit song or make it into the movies, etc), these 3rd party storage sites will be likely be able to use a master key and decrypt your files.
If you were an executive at one of these 3rd party storage services, and you could look at the files that Madonna uploaded, or Hillary uploaded, or Trump Jr. uploaded, etc, would you resist looking?
When they claim to use encryption, it means that they encrypted your in-the-clear files. If your files were not in-the-clear, then they would not be touting that they use encryption. They have 100% clear access to your files.
You must encrypt files yourself. Never trust a remote service to encrypt your files -- unless you do not care about those files being accessed by complete strangers.
"gpg" is one way to encrypt any files, with unbreakable complexity (assuming you do not use a breakable password/passphrase).

Do you recommend any good software that does this for you? Paid software is fine. Thanks.

    • @NoEgg4u
      @NoEgg4u Рік тому +7

@@Getlost55 That does "this" for you? Please define "this".
I am asking, because in my last sentence, I wrote that "gpg" is one way to encrypt any files...
So if you are asking for something else, then I do not know what you are asking for.
Another option is VeraCrypt, which creates encrypted containers (anything you copy into those containers (or created directly in those containers) will be encrypted on the fly).
You can share your containers (each container is a single file), and no one can make use of it without the password/pass-phrase (and there are even more advanced locks for your VeraCrypt containers, if you want to be even more secure). You will probably not create more than one container (maybe two), because you can toss any files into your container(s).
      gpg can encrypt individual files.
VeraCrypt creates containers (individual files) that hold any other files, and everything in the containers is encrypted.
Note that gpg's primary function is not for encrypting individual files. That functionality is just one of its features. But it uses very powerful encryption, and is why I recommend it.
Both "gpg" and "VeraCrypt" are free and open source.
If your "this" question is for some other purpose, then please elaborate what it is you are seeking.

Kind of, but not really. With Google, you’re pushed into their ecosystem and end up using their file versions (Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc.).
When using sync, I can literally move the file from one folder to another because I own the file and the file type. (As opposed to having to “export” via that Takeout page from Google).

I just checked it out and ya its not for me. Its $8 per month. Actually they dont offer unlimited file versions. 180 days for the $8 a month account and & 365 days for the $20 a month account. I use synology drive off my synology nas and unlimited file versions for as long as i want to store them and it comes for free with my NAS :) and I don't have to trust any cloud providers. Is the sharing as advanced as sync no but its good enough for my needs.

I thought about Sync, I have the 5 free GB account, plus added 2 people, but how many server locations do they have? Like to keep copies of you data. I chose OneDrive for a few reasons. No ones gunna hack their servers or have access. Plus they keep you data in 5 different locations across the world. I keep all Mt family photos on my OneDrive and feel secure. So OneDrive doesn't have end to end encryption? Like you mean once it's store in Microsofts servers? I doubt there would be anything to worry about. But yes I agree that Sync is a great option but at this points I know Microsoft will always be around and they have cutting edge security.....right?💁‍♂️

A bit disappointing and kind of suspicious. Sync has some of the worst transparency I've seen (check out reddit threads on them) and doesn't seem to be end-to-end encrypted. They use terrible technical terms like "zero knowledge encryption" that mislead customers and are an insult to this industry. It's also not open-source. How can we trust content on the channel when it's clearly one of the worst, most misleading options? Honestly, I'll probably unsubscribe if there isn't some kind of explanation in the comments or on Twitter.
    My preferences:
    Tresorit (Swiss, discussed in comments)
NextCloud (as private as you host it yourself)
    Skiff (open-source, 10 GB free)
    ProtonDrive (open-source, trustworthy, long history)
You didn't even mention these in the ad?

BEWARE moving Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides from Google Drive and then deleting them from Google Drive; you will lose those files!! Google Drive uses links. What you end up copying are links to nowhere, once you delete the files from Google Drive. NOTE to Apple users: Pages, Numbers, and Keynote can open Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, just be sure to save them as native Apple files, or if you prefer, as MS Office files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Security is only as good as the weakest point. Interestingly theory is going round, hackers - if you call them that - hackers are using tools like your trusted proprietary AV scanner as an access point to your windows/mac/linux/google machine, its an interesting theory as these have full access to every part of your machine but there is a moral obligation to have an AV running especially if dealing with third parties.

    It’s SO SLOW.
