    Proton Pass is the latest security software from Proton, the same company that created ProtonVPN, Proton Mail, Proton Calendar and Proton Drive. But how does it stack up against competition like 1Password or Bitwarden? Here are Josh's thoughts after using Proton Pass.

      I've been playing with Pass for a while now. I'm running into some issues with the mobile app where it doesn't seem to want to pop up even though I have it set as default. I have it plugged in to my Brave browser and seems to work fine there. I primarily use Chrome and still using their password manager. If it's down to Google PW manager VS Proton, what would you recommend? Google PW manager works pretty good for me, but I still worry about security. I use Proton Mail and calendar for business related stuff and really like the security aspect.

    Update: proton pass now supports credit cards, and they say they’re working on other types of information like bank accounts and addresses.
    Just switched to proton pass after being a lastpass user since 2008 or so. The features are a lot better, as is the security (hopefully). Overall I’m pleased. For such a new product it’s really good, and I know they’re working to make it better. The aliases are an absolute game changer. I don’t have to worry about a random website spamming me or selling my email to advertisers because I can just shut down the alias.

    Your transparency is refreshing. Your personal requirements mirror mine. I needed this to round out my research. The requirements for a "Family" password manager are a lot more than a discount on multiple licenses. These days we are looking for an information manager that has not only external security, but also internal security more typical of a network operating system where information can be organized by area, where you can control sharing by area or item, where you can store many different types of information, and where it is efficient to use on each type of end point. We'd rather pay than get it for free and being the product ourselves. Our privacy is valuable that we are willing to pay for but it also needs to be practical. Since I've gained the most from your reviews, I will use one of the links on your most recent 1Password videos to give it a try.

    I started recently to replace Alphabet's products with Proton ones. The cloud is kDrive, which is also very privacy respectful and supports open source. And for the password manager I opted for Bitwarden, which works great in many use cases. Now I am undecided whether to give Proton Pass a try: as for Alphabet, I don't like having all my eggs in one basket.

    I've been using Proton services for a few years now and I've been really happy with it.
    In the past I've used Last Pass and Dashlane, and found them both to be ok, but the plugins are hit and miss with my desktop browser of choice (Brave) and on mobile (Android), they can be a little frustrating too.
    I also have a Synology NAS which I use for a lot of services. While I don't host my own Password Manager on my NAS (though it is possible), I do use the free Synology C2 Password Manager and it's been excellent - no complaints at all.
    However Proton Pass looks super compelling so I may give it a try.

      Yes, it works well on iOS. And no, no password migration is secure, no matter which services we’re talking about. Anytime you export your password vault, it is extremely insecure and vulnerable. I suggest you make the switch and then be sure to permanently delete the exported vault file.

I made the shift to proton pass free account and consolidated all passwords since they have unlimited devices and unlimited passwords. Liked the email alias but I already use Duck Duck Go which has unlimited emails with tracker removal feature which Proton lacks since they are not a privacy company. Would love to see the family vault feature in future. Some other features which I would love too see are - password strength indicator like edge browser, duplicate password removal, password changer, password history. Would upgrade to paid version if I get these features.

    I think that there is value in using Proton Pass as a secondary or backup service. For instance, I once locked myself out of my 1Password account. Since I had a copy of that on my phone, I was able to just create a new 1Password account, move everything over to it, and keep moving forward. Also, using the alias as a secondary for me is a possibility. Having more than one domain for the alias helps keep my identity more private. For instance, if someone were to recognize my primary aliasing domain, having that secondary one helps to hide my identity.

    I've just switched from 1Password to Proton Pass. Very happy with it so far. I have no need of the features that aren't there yet. The quality of the app and browser plugin seem great. I have been using Proton Mail for years and got the full Proton Pass thrown in for free so am very happy to ditch the 1Password subscription.

    If your alias is compromised on a site that stores CC info don't you have to go into the site and remove your CC info? Or are you only aliasing for sites you don't trust?

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  11 місяців тому

      You can alias for any site you want. And yes, removing the alias doesn't remove the CC info, so you might want to consider masking your CC info using a virtual card from Privacy.com or IronVest.

    I have been using ProtonMail for years and am very happy with it.
    However, after recently having no choice but to navigate through the mire of corporate password managers, even for personal use, I will only use password mangers that are *ISO 27001* and *SOC2* compliant. Trust me, that eliminates a lot of the competition among password managers. Does the Proton password manager meet my two compliance requirements? Searching for “ISO” and “SOC” on Proton’s support page, did not produce any relevant results.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  11 місяців тому +1

      Hmmm...I honestly don't know. I think that would have to be something that Proton answers themselves. I'm curious - what makes you so laser focused on those two compliance criteria?

    • @gauntletwielder6306
      @gauntletwielder6306 10 місяців тому +1

      @@AllThingsSecured - Good question. Using a password manager, that is neither ISO 27001 or SOC2 compliant, in a corporate environment, is almost guaranteed to be a contributing factor in failing a security audit. 99% of security audits required for compliance, typically require ISO 27001 and/or SOC2 compliance. That is just for corporate use… merchants, financial institutions, etc…. So taking the time, effort and expense to install a non compliant password manager, will more than likely result in having to do the work all over again with a compliant password manager. That is not too much of an issue… until it comes to performing the work on a remote computer owned by a remote employee. Then there is user training.
      Hospitals are an entirely different story. HIPAA for example. HIPAA is federally required by hospitals, medical facilities, etc… *Keeper* is HIPAA compliant.
      Being in IT for too many decades, and working for Fortune 500 companies and the federal government, I have seen too many password problems. Many people, even people with PhD’s, seem to have occasional password problems.

    I beg to differ on the UI/UX of Proton Pass. Still needs a lot of work at least in the browser extension. For example, when creating a new vault, after the vault is created, you have to click on the name field - it isn't selected - what else are you going to do after creating it. Worse, when importing into a newly created vault, the new vault prompts you to import, but then you have to once again select that vault when doing the import or the import goes into the Personal vault. You can't delete the Personal vault - what does "Personal" mean anyway? I have vaults for specific categories - e.g. Medical. There is nothing that I would put in a default (aka Personal) vault - I would like to delete it. You can't multi-select entries. Which means if you want to delete a bunch of entries, you have to go one-by-one. As far as I'm concerned, the product was not ready for release from a UI/UX perspective.

    I am trying Proton Pass and its a mess. You cannot import passwords from different sources, it deletes/overwrites the old ones. When creating a new password for a google account it did not at least suggest to update the old one, let alone automatically update it. Login in Aliexpress and it says that cannot find logins when I have. The Android APP is the worst experience. Literally only works to copy paste paste, the "Get it from Proton Pass" never works.
    I will stick to KeePass, thanks.
