I found an extremely good video essay on the significance of food in Invincible.
IE: Nolan learned that in human culture, people gather around and eat to have a good time, so every time a tragedy happened, he suggested to order pizza, without realizing that his family wasn’t in the mood for it.
Right after Mark gets back from the hospital, he tries to do the same, ask to order pizza, but once he sees Debbie crying, he realizes that he nearly repeated the same tone deaf mistake as his Dad, so he leaves her be.
It’s rich, detailed writing like this that makes the show so good.

It's also implied that food may have been how Debbie was able to instill human values onto Nolan, as she does reveal that when he first arrived on Earth he had a borderline robotic personality that she slowly softened into a person. It's especially noticeable when considering how Nolan always asks for something to eat whenever he comes back from something and does seem genuinely excited for it even if he himself doesn't realize it.

Debbie is such a wonderful character equally expressing resolute will and inner strength, while also fighting the most understandable bouts of anguish and nigh-despair.
Invincible's core theme is that it's the inherent "humanity" that makes heroes what they are. Debbie is the embodiment of that humanity.
It's so tempting to dismiss her feelings, struggles, and problems as lesser compared to all the wild shit that goes on, but they are just as valid. Once you start dismissing people and their lives, for some "greater good" you begin the slippery slope into turning into a monster.

I feel bad for Debbie. As her husband betrayed her love calling her a pet and even the hero support group don't want anything to do with her. You can see her just throw herself into her work and later marks brother to have something she can control in her life as everything is crumbling around her
I'd say that's her true inner strength of staying stable in a time where most would be frozen and unable to do anything with how much changed in an instant.

  • @QMMarc

The right thing isn't always like, the easy or moral-looking thing. You used a dog dying and prolonging his suffering right, if you know its suffering and there's nothing you can do, the best thing you can do is to end that suffering, but that's not easy, like, most people have never taken a life, any life, well, maybe small bugs life but that's too small right, a dog is different, most people can't force themselves to do it, and, we have systems and vets that do it for you, specifically because it isn't easy, and if it was super easy to a person that might not be a great look right.
But yeah, like, i think Invincible tackles that type of stuff well, like when he killed that head dude right, he lost control, sure, but at the same time, it's not like he was giving him a choice, the issue is that he lost control, so, you can say he did the right thing, but because he lost control, because it was almost an instinct to do so, in his heart he knows he didn't do for the right reason, he just did it cause he lost it, he betrayed a part of himself and became just a little bit more like the person he didn't want to become. It's such an interesting way to go with it, and it doesn't sacrifice good fun action, it's a hard balance, not to come off preachy or boring.

The Startrek culture you brought up personally sounds more like being born intersex rather than being transgender. Often when a baby is born with anatomy that looks both male and/or female their parents and or doctor will immediately choose a gender for the child, and that often involves unnecessary surgery to make their body match the gender that is chosen for them. And then that child is often never told that they were born intersex, and when it comes up later it can be distressing.

The date part I completely disagree, I would dare say is the other way around in today's world and if anything the same women that see men as a double edge sword are the ones that opens the door to them in hopes to manipulate them.
Debbie is great because she always stands her ground even in the face of an alien husband or a delusional villain, but above all she cares deeply about her family and friends putting herself in danger-a thing that has been lost currently, a woman is not strong cause she's "strong independent"-her care, love and fight for others and willing to grow out of the pain is her strength. And that's why Velma and Carol failed

In this day and age of bland, lifeless, inconsistent characters in film and tv, it makes me so happy that i can actually latch on and care for her because her writing and the actress’s performance make me care. So much so when that douche at the support group for widowed spouses of heroes completely turned on her after he found out she was Omni-Man’s wife AFTER HE BROKE THE RULE OF TELLING WHO THEY WERE MARRIED TO, I was furious and felt she did not deserve that. One of the most consistently frustrating parts with the so-called "strong women" archetype in media is that often times the women are not only powerful and resilient, but that their struggles are often homogenized into something so shallow as to be relatable to "all women". Captain Marvel struggled with men telling her her whole life that she couldn't do it as good as a man, not with any specificity but solely to create the theme of "Get up girl, no man can keep you down."
Part of what makes Debbie an effective version of that archetype is that her story is so specific, so unlike any real person's actual story that we can empathize with her as an individual, and thus draw comparisons to her story indirectly(i.e. your tangent on the writing of Star Trek and Orville). Same reason why everyone is praising the character writing for Lucy in the new Fallout show.
In other words, a character designed to be relatable to everyone is relatable to no one.

You did the right thing about the little dog.
I once met a little girl petting a stray cat. She asked me what to do with the cat since I was an adult, and I was completely unprepared for that question. I told her that there are services that take care of stray animals (shelters) and that she can talk to her parents about calling them if she feels concerned. Or that the cat might have an owner but was allowed to walk freely outside (it looked taken care of) and that she probably shouldnt worry too much about it.
It felt at the time as a semi reasonable thing to do that doesnt involve me much, and I dont personally like animals much so it was perfectly my style of dealing with things.
But the more I think about it now the more I despise myself. Little girl got enough courage to ask a stranger, adult, dangerous looking man (I'm a metalhead) because she trusted I can help her and the little animal. I should've done so much more, ask more questions about the cat, about if she can trust her parents with the cat situations or if they are gonna neglect the issue (like I did). The issue wasn't the cat there, fuck the cat. It was about the little girl and painting a picture of responsible, helpful adults that she can trust with issues important to her. And I failed her. I should've been alarmed that a girl this small is playing outside alone with stray animals near a rather busy road, where the hell were her parents.
Situations like that show us how we really are and I feel absolutely disgusted with myself. When it hit me I donated 50$ to an animal shelter nearby, but it's not fixing anything really, it was just to in a small way repent for my indifference, to calm my conscience at least a little bit.

I didn't take Omni-man relating Debbie to a pet as him saying he didn't love her, though it was certainly meant to limit or degrade her importance in that moment. It was part of the "in a thousand years, what will you have?" dynamic he was trying to sell to Mark, that her best case lifespan and their relationship was a fraction of a fraction of his.
I'm embarrassed to admit that I've felt more grief over the loss of pets than other family members lost: pets tend to be very close personal relationships, while I've never really even felt comfortable with family i never lived with or near. My last dog passed at the age of 15, which is old for a large dog, but i was older than that when i got him, and i might still go on two or more times that. I have no idea how i will react to the loss of people I'm actually close to, but it's a chilling thought.
It's painful to grow close to something you can see aging before your eyes and know you will outlast it, so the idea of sticking with your own kind to avoid that situation is functionally sound. The problem with the logic is that you miss the potential ties you could've had, which compounds if you don't end up keeping ties that will last. It's pretty clear to me that Nolan loves Debbie more than anyone else, and maybe didn't have the concept before meeting her. She was the factor that swayed him, and kept Mark from signing on to the viltrumite mission when Nolan tried to force himself to carry it out.
I really like her character overall. She took a lot of punishment this season, so i hope it gets better for her later.

That puppy still had a better chance with you than without you. Also it would have likely still suffered for a while if abandoned. Now having watched the whole video. Kinda reflecting on my own work. A fantasy story in which the characters have lost everything, but are "Blessed" with apparent immortality and eternal youth. Their home world is gone, and they are the last of their kind. All the while, the world has moved on. The other people living in it aren't apathetic to the plight of the main characters, but they'll never understand the context that the main characters came from. Decades pass and the main character seem to be going through the motions, having never truly moved on. In turn, they can't relate to the people of this new world. No matter how decent they are. It leaves them wondering what the point of continuing on is. There is more to it than that.
And honestly, the project is far bigger in scope from when I started. But the main point I want to go for is- Is tomorrow worthwhile even though it seems there's nothing for you? Can you live and accept with losing everything you knew and cared about? Or is tomorrow bullshit and it makes no sense to do anything but force the world to conform to your own selfish desires and wants? Does any of this matter because the selfishness of people will cause them to bring everything to ruin anyway? Or, can people be better?
The story will get darker over time, (Not in the violence and gore way, even though I only want to use it to ground the story. IE- swords cut, and maces crush) and by the end, I kinda have to where everything is hopeless. And there is no magical solution to fix everything.
That being said. This is now a multi-book project, so each has their own theme that threads into the greater whole. After an absurd amount of rewrites that amounted to nothing, (focused on trying to make book one perfect), I'm just gonna get everything done first and edit later. Been at this since 2015, no stopping now lol. (Lots has changed over the years. But luckily now, I have plenty to recycle and draw from)
Anywho. Thanks. This was a pleasant watch.

@@Santoryu90 A lot of the characters in the comic are just tropes; they aren't real people. Amber has way more personality in the show and she feels way more alive, but the altruistic perfect goddess the writers try to paint her as doesn't mesh with the way she acts. She's extremely self serving and has little empathy for other people.
It's very easy to hate her, but I think they could've given her a really good arc if they recognized what they had created. Keep the start exactly the same, but later on have Mark lash out at her ("It's always you, you, you! Don't you ever think about how I feel?!" etc...), then have her reflect on her own behavior, realize she's not perfect, and try to change (success or failure to change are both options). I could easily see myself liking her as a character if any of that happened, but none of that happened... so she's just miserable to watch.

There's no "Gray Morality" in Invincible. Omni-Man either conquered planets or gets lumped into the body pile. He eventually caves in to his emotions and abandons the evil empire of the Viltrumites. They even tried to resurrect the Guardians of the Globe with Darkwing being shown to be perfectly alive and was just trapped in another dimension. That twist works because the Comics never showed Omni-Man and how he killed the Guardians. Which is why everyone criticizes that episodes fight scenes heavily because it really messed up the power scaling in Invincible. Seeing Darkwing get utterly smashed doesn't make sense given that in the world of Invincible technology can and will kill Viltrumites. How can these hyper elite warriors lose to one man they knew and studied their whole life? That's why the Comics were smarter and never showed how gruesome Omni-Man can be to his own friends. Darkwings surprise reveal shows he had those caring emotions deep in him all along and why he spared him.
Omni-Man didn't do anything wrong he was literally forced to do it or be branded a traitor against his own people. Being forced into bad decisions isn't "Gray" that's just Evil. That's a messed up scenario to lose all sense of free will and to commit atrocities in your planets name. Everything is so outlandishly and cartoonishly Evil I'm surprised would say that with confidence. Lex Luthor has more nuance than any Invincible character. That's as close to gray as you can get or Doctor Doom. If you're committing worse evil acts than both these men combined you just cannot say "Gray". There's zero ambiguity in Invincible on who's the bad guys and why. They even go as far as to destroy the entire Viltrumite Homeworld because they deemed them PURE EVIL. What Gray? I just see edgy gruesome mutilation amidst a very sub-par story about a wannabe Superman.
But what ultimately makes me dislike it is what the artist said about the story and why his opinion on the story is why Invincible ended much earlier than they planned.
"I felt like I was no longer making a story about Superheroes".
That's why Invincible ended. The story evolved in a way he did not like. Which is coincidentally around the time Thragg decapitated Debbie in the Comics. Which is so weird to think about especially when you see him mocking other comic books.

Can we talk about how the viltrumite officer called on Mark about how the rich and powerful are ravaging the earth and he doesn't stop them?
Like if we take Allens background as truthful, the viltrumites conquered a world that had all their affairs in order, so maybe the viltrumites are full of shit about why they expand their empire (who would have fokin guess). But for the sake of argument, lets take her as a objective judge of character, how can Spiderman, Superman, Batman, etc, argue with what she said?
What are you doing as a super hero at the end of the day? Playing Firefighter? Police? Cowboy vs Indieans? Why can't a super hero fly to Gaza and Ukraine and try to fix the problem there? What about Global Warming or even, income inequality? How come they don't go to support amazon or hollywood strikers?
It is because it would be boring? Or maybe too much power fantasy? Superman went to Europa and nabbed both Stalin and Hitler and hauled them both to the UN to face judgement, and I agree, that shit was cringe, but also... cool?
I would love it even as a B-story, specially with Mark having a friend like Amber. Is he doing enough just fighting bad guys in the physical sense? Kaijus and the like or can he go in a more abstract way?
Dunno, just drinkin' rum and rambling.

Both of them want to control their own habitats and explain what goes off their views with is "just a conspiracy".
As an example they use latin american music. How have gotten so bad in recent years and how is just a mean to launder money. They are kinda right, to be honest, but the intent is more mundane that they are willing to admit. People just like mcdonalds, musicians are now entertainers first, musicians second. So is now wonder the music we produce is worse than 1, 2,3 decades ago.

That episode of TNG with Worf and his step brother, always kinda bothered me. The prime directive is generally a good idea, but it's not exactly like it's the fault of those people that their planet was facing a natural disaster a few thousand years before they could do anything about it. And is it better for them to simply die to prevent chance they develop some kind of religion?
Further more the guy who commits suicide at the end because he didn't want to lose his own or whatever, asked "The place was part of us, how will we keep it alive" The obvious response should have been to tell him to tell stories about their ancestral home, as the people were already shown to have a strong oral tradition of keeping stories and myths with generations of story keepers who have to memorize it word for word.
And Nikolai was being treated like he did something wrong here, when it makes everyone else kind of look like sociopaths.
It's not like an earth quake or a war or something those people could have been prepared for better or are responsible for, their planet was destroyed. It's not even talking about giving cavemen technology that could prove a threat to everyone else in the future. They're just being moved to an uninhabited planet.

I'm really curious if they'll get to/do my favourite arc of the comics, the *SPOILERS*
Reboot?! arc, because I can only imagine the general fan backlash to how it ends will be full of normies saying Mark is ruined because he didn't make the "right" choice. But the fact that Mark broke and couldn't do it and wanted his life back is incredibly human to me, and just makes me appreciate him more. Plus the ending of that arc fucking broke me, with Terra's first question literally making me tear up every time
I'm a huge fan of humanising moments like that, which tell us so much about the character and their wants and motivations and how they've developed
Like in Attack On Titan, Eren admitting to Armin that he wants Mikasa to be sad and not be able to move on for at least a while when he's gone, even knowing it's selfish and stupid. That's one of my favourite moments of the series because it's just so bloody perfectly human
And to bring it back to Dragonball, as all things must, Vegeta being the one to suggest fusion in GT is the ultimate moment of character development, and why GT Vegeta is the best Vegeta, bar none

I also really like Debbie. One thing about her that is especially well done is the depiction of duty as a mother but ot is also her choice. When Oliver comes into the story and she put her life on hold again the writers did a good job at not making it feel like " that's just what women do". You see the conflict in her, and her ultimately deciding to take him in because it's the right thing to do. I could visualize 2 equivalent but opposite situations where she takes him in because "a woman's duty hurdur" and also one where "im going to just let this kid get experimented on by the government because I'm a girl boss". Either one of these would have made her extremely unlikable.
I'm a little worried about her character in the future because of a specific plot point that I hope to god they change. But I don't want to spoil it for others like it was spoiled for me

That said we need each other so much that a lone person will quickly die without the benefit of society if this is examined with any depth. As much as I like the core story of invincible, I have to say that 20 years of cape stuff being mainstream has completely poisoned it for me. We do get a little bit of this sort of plot element with Eve in season two but the fact that there are still poor people in the world with superheroes is something that I feel needs to be at the core of any story about superheroes these days. Not saying it’s a bad story in a vacuum more saying I’m so weary and scarred I can’t really enjoy things for what they are in this particular genre.

36:00 Sorry you had that situation, Plague. I had a similar one with some newborn bunnies. We had dogs at the time and the mother had them in a hole in our backyard. Well, they couldn't really stay there because of the dogs and the lawn mower. I think the mother got scared off and never returned. Well, tried to move them to a tree shelter away from the yard and dogs. Mother still never came back and they just starved to death. I felt awful. Maybe they would have been fine if we just put a little perimeter around them and didn't risk the dogs trying to eat them or scaring off the mother by keeping the dogs locked inside. Or maybe the rabbits would have just starved to death regardless. I don't know and will never find out. You're faced with situations in life whether you're knowledgeable and equipped to handle them or not and have to live with the consequences, fair or not. It's hard to make it through life without taking emotional damage. Life happens to even the most privileged, sheltered people. It sucks, but challenges are a part of the human experience. Sometimes you just forgive yourself your mistakes and move on. Praying you made the best call under the circumstances so that you can sleep at night and live with yourself.
