      'No Doubt' made their version, but their music video didn't have any impact on me. I like No Doubt to a certain degree, but I hated them making a cover of this song and turning it into a human dilemma.. and you might have guessed it by now, Talk Talk is always gonna be my Number one.

    I enjoy Gwen’s cover version and I was so impressed when she chose to record it. All respect and love to her, but, I love the original SO much and it’s amazing to me that I personally still get so moved by the beauty of the song as much as I did when it was released in 1984. There’s something magical in the way the song unfolds with the sounds, the vocals, the tempo, the emotion which comes through in the late Mark Hollis’ subtle yet powerful vocal delivery. For me it’s a signature piece of what made the 80s such an incredible time for musical creativity and fresh new sounds.

    I've always thought this tune sounds like something by Roxy Music. The vocals remind me of those by Bryan Ferry. I like the bassline. The "animal" audio-effects sound like they could have been created by Brian Eno behind some synth keyboard. I'm not a big fan of 80s New Wave, but this tune moves just right -- suave and smooth. Next up: "Suddenly Last Summer" (The Motels).

    • @MRoyClark
      @MRoyClark 3 роки тому +4

      Yeah, it has those warm synth tones Roxy was leaning toward in their later stuff. So much UK Synth stuff evokes Bryan Ferry. And that bass tone really is perfection.

    Via Wikipedia:
    "There are two versions of the video for "It's My Life". The first, envisioned by director Tim Pope as a statement against the banality of lip-synching, consists almost entirely of footage from wildlife documentaries, interspersed with shots of Talk Talk lead singer Mark Hollis standing in various places throughout the London Zoo. He keeps his hands in his coat pockets and his mouth pointedly shut tight, the latter often obscured by hand-drawn animated lines that occasionally appear in the documentary footage sequences as well."

    • @starrynight1657

      The bird sqiggle represents freedom, and some animals are free in the wild. And lines also cover the animal's mouths. I don't think you capture all the meaning.

    This is why we old folk in our mid-60's will ALWAYS love the synth-pop music of the middle-1980's. "It's My Life" is very special to me--almost 40 years later--because it helped me through a four-year battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma (which I obviously won because "it's my life" then, and it's still my life today.) The POWER of this song lies in its deeply felt BEAUTY and those aspects are inseparable. Sometimes I feel as if this miraculous recording does, in fact, tap into the human collective unconsciousness through the voice of Marc Hollis. One cannot deny its appeal across time and distance. It leaves its mark on us all. In the harmonies of Talk-Talk's "Its My Life" people find a harmony within themselves as truth and beauty mesh. A joyous and inspiring song from a man who was known specifically for his "gentle beauty."

  • @MRoyClark
    @MRoyClark 3 роки тому +8

    Great reaction, my friend!!! That vocal tone you love that is common to Talk Talk, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, The Human League, and ABC is the Roxy Music/Bowie influence. Both acts were MUCH bigger in the UK than in the US and almost every Synthpop and New Romantic act of the Postpunk era grew up worshipping and imitating them. The whole Postpunk/Synthpop era (as well as most Goth stuff) owes a debt to the vocal stylings of Bryan Ferry and David Bowie, among a handful of other early 70s Art-Glam heroes (like Marc Bolan of T. Rex and Steve Harley of Cockney Rebel). Freddy Mercury and Elton John kinda belong to an adjacent milieu of 70s Glam, but more of a mainstream "Rawk'n'Roll" way than a European Space Queen way, which was the Roxy-Bowie axis.

    They have some other great songs which you might enjoy but their masterpieces are 2 albums: Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock. I think I've seen your reaction to I Believe in You from SoE but I can't find it now... Anyway, these are the kind of albums that you need to hear from start to finish in complete silence with no interruption. That rich, almost pompous sound to the voice is a classic hallmark of 80’s male British vocals. Brian Ferry, ABC, Spandau Ballet, The Fixx, Peter Kingsbery (Cock Robin) and many other faves of mine all sang with that style even though their voices were wildly different.

    I too, consider Talk Talk to be of my favorites. Talk Talk was the first song I latched onto. It was their most discofied songs; the 12" is really good. Then they kept putting out albums that were more intelligent and more diverse sounding. I think there are 5 real albums and all worth owning. UA-cam as 2 or 3 complete concerts from around 1994. Excellent shows. I think he sang from his diaphram, and worked on lowering his voice (as all men should). Is it a baritone? Even in the concerts, he sings with an incredible range and with the right emotion. I like all their hair long. Same as it Ever Was. As Loose Marks points out, Mark Hollis passed in 1986 or 1996. A big loss. Steven Pettinga, Indianapolis.

    When a band or project has a repeating name you can usually count on something fabulous: Duran Duran, The The, Talk Talk...
