A cardiac arrest is the clinical presentation where a person's heart stops beating and they cease respiratory effort. They are unconscious, and not breathing. Resuscitation - CPR, applying the use of a Defibrillator etc is the act of trying to reverse this, which can be possible in some circumstances.
If left untreated, Cardiac Arrest results in the patient being confirmed life extinct and of course, it's important to be aware that Resuscitation is largely never successful. Cardiac Arrest is different from being confirmed deceased though.
