  • This is a video where I go over the similarities and differences between the xTool D1 Laser Diode cutting and Engraving Machine and the Ortur Laser Master 2 Pro. This comparison does not go over examples of engravings or cuts with either machine since I feel like they both do the job well but wanted to go over the specs of both machines.

    I was actually able to try both of these laser engravers before purchasing the Makeblock xTool D1 (10 watt laser). The xTool D1 is an amazing laser engraver, and it just feels much sturdier than the Ortur laser engraver. The Xtool D1 now works very well with the Lightburn software (after an easy firmware upgrade). It also has a new plug & play 20 watt laser option (laser unit can be purchased separately), an air assist option, a honeycomb bed, a new updated rotary engraver tool, and leg extensions. The xTool D1 also works very well with the new lightweight Comgrow laser engraver enclosure. The xTool D1 does not have limit switches, but they are not really necessary anyway. Also, while assembly is fairly simple, the squaring of the gantry, and adjustment of the belt tension (3 of them) are key to the accuracy of the xTool D1. The focus of the 10 watt, .08 mm laser beam is very small and accurate. It will produce great photos and engravings, and the laser will cut 1/8" plywood in one pass, and 1/4" plywood in 4 or 5 passes (100% power @ 5 mm per second for both). Any wood thicker than 1/4" just burns before it can be cut, but hey this is a diode laser, not a CO2 laser. The really powerful (and loud) cooling fan actually acts like an air assist, and the totally enclosed laser eye guard creates air pressure to assist the laser (this is actually by design and not a flaw). I actually like the red crosshair sights for squaring up and centering a project. However, you can fire the main laser at very low power for framing if you wish. The Laserbox software even gives you the option of turning off the crosshairs altogether if you desire. The red crosshair laser is exactly 16 mm from the blue working laser, and it can be calibrated in Lightburn if necessary. The WiFi and mobile App. work great, but I hardly ever use them. I have a really good laptop connected to the xTool D1 by USB cable, as Lightburn (in high graphic mode) requires lots of processing power for rendering projects. Normally, I will create new projects on my custom desktop computer, and then transfer them to the laptop over the network. So far, I have engraved wood, leather, cast acrylic, stainless steel, coated steel and anodized aluminum with the xTool D1, and they all turned out great. I only cut thin wood (1/4" and under) with the xTool D1, and it also works very well. The xTool D1 and Lightburn software both have a learning curve, but once you get the hang of them they work great together. As you can probably tell, I really like the xTool D1, as it works very well for my needs, and I know it well now. In the future, I may upgrade to the 20 watt laser, and eventually a CO2 laser, but for now the xTool D1 suits me just fine. If anyone has any questions regarding the xTool D1, feel free to ask any time. I will be more than happy to help. 🙂

      Might be my longest comment ever! Yes the D1 and Laserbox Basic have made a number of improvements since the this video was released. Still a solid machine, now if they would only figure out a way to add limit switches it would be even better. Can't wait to see their enclosure coming shortly.

    Thank you so much for this video! I was looking at this two units for myself and this is very valuable. For those wondering, Lightburn works with the D1 and there is instruction on how to set it up for it. The only detail that I might have a different opinion, is on the cross hair laser to mark where it starts burning. That extra cross hair is to mark the work origin (0,0) on the corner of your stock and not the beginning spot for burning. When I had the Camaster CNC, it came with something close to this, just to mark your own 0,0. Still undecided on which of these two, leaning towards the Otrur. Again, thank you so much for your video!

      @@BusterBeagle3D Yes, very helpful, as I said, looking at these two units. If I'm not imposing too much on you, have a question about the xTool. It has a double laser setup, are both 5W? If that's the case, do they equate to 10W output? The only reason I ask is because they offer it also in 10W, is that the double setup then?

Changed my mind when I saw Lightburn and the D1 working together. Purchased the D1 and the rotary unit, plus I like having 10W better than 5.5W, love the metal construction of the D1.
      One thing I would tell you about the D1, make sure you have it go the home position on Lightburn startup, otherwise the origin point won't be steady. I'm quitye happy with the D1.

    As of now (June 2022) the xTool D1 can be controlled by LaserBurn Software. Does the xTool rapid travel between locations when the laser is not firing? The one drawback I have on my AtomStack is it moves the same speed when laser is on or off. Those steel v-wheels running on round guide rods, are they hardened steel? I have the same design on my 30 year old Dahlgren engraving machine which has maintained superior alignment, mechanical stability, and wear resistance.

    *Excellent video! Thank you!* My thoughts: X-Tool has released the firmware for the D1 to use Lightburn. The LM2 Pro is 400x400. The standard LM2 is 400 x430. X-Tool made a huge mistake by not including $0.25 Limit Switches, and if you move the gantry it looses its coordinates and the X,Y don't move together. The D1 has a long way to go before it's consumer ready; looks don't count.

    • @BusterBeagle3D
      @BusterBeagle3D  2 роки тому +2

      I agree that limit switches would have been nice which is why I bring it up in the review. I was even looking at the board to see if there was some way to add it but I don't see a port for them. However to be honest I don't even use limit switches on my CNC machine. I simply have to know where the start position is and the go from there. Not an excuse for not having the switches because I wish they did but I wouldn't say it's not usable. I have seen people create some amazing things so far using the machine.

      @@BusterBeagle3D Definitely a nice beta for sure! But the fact that the gantry moves unevenly for me by hand is a deal breaker. A friend has one and he loves it, except if he finds out he has to run a second pass. They just didn't get enough beta testers involved, or perhaps didn't take the feedback. This could have been the #1 on the market.

    I got the lc-40 recently & engraved a piece of the included paper with it. My goal is not engraving, though. It is cutting 3mm wood & hardboard - things like that. Do I need to return this & get the Xtool pro 10w instead? I love the build, fit & finish of this lc-40, however I feel like it might be a different class of machine & won’t fit MY needs - is that so? It is my first laser. I would like to be able to do 15x15 works, though I could live with 12x12 for a while, too (considering Lc-40 is 14x15 roughly). Please advise me! Thanks!

      I also wish to do rotary of many kinds from shot glasses to jars - I feel like I need to send back the Lc-40 because they say a rotary is coming & a stronger laser - by the time I get either of those, that’s the price of the Xtool d1 pro anyway, right? Air assist seems very important & the nozzle comes standard on Xtool d1 pro as well.

      If you already have the LM2 and are used to the working of that you may find the xTool frustrating until they workout the software updates or make it work with something like Lightburn. I don't think the steel wheels make anything work better but I do feel like they would last better in the long run. The LF is nice and the added hardware for the air assist is also nice but the laser on the xTool D1 is much better, it's available in 10 Watts so almost double what you can get on the LM2. I have also created a file that you can use to add an air assist to the D1 as well. You can see a video on that by looking at my UA-cam Channel.

    Major mistake to make Laserbox D1 not play with Lightburn (excellent software). Giving you a weak, basic program that will cost $$$ (likely) to upgrade is a non-starter. I have been using the Ortur Laser Master 2 Pro for a couple months with Lightburn and it is fabulous. I have not found anything that I could not easily figure out to do. I have been using Vectric Aspire for CNC for 12 years and although popular and super high quality like Lightburn, Aspire had a pretty steep learning curve and very pricey (over $2000 over the years).
    Ortur's quality is outstanding and the machine should have a long life and easily maintained.
