  • I have no idea why this old mine dump in the forest has so many crucibles, but it sure is fun digging them up.

Back in the 80's i found 2 assay dumps. Both on gold mine/mill sites and ran the dirt through my drywasher (i'm in the desert) and got quite a bit of gold and silver BB's out of it. They didn't care about keeping them little bitty things back then. One yeilded 17 ounces and the other 23 ounces of gold. All told both places took me 3 weeks to run. Judging by the crucibles, cupels, and scorifiing cups you might be sitting on something there.

Really cool, I found a crucible Saturday when I was out looking for arrowheads in the creek, I had no idea what it was until a few hours ago when my friend commented on the video and told me, I’ve never spent more than ten minutes gold panning before but now I’m wanting to go back and pan it, found a beautiful Quartz crystal about a hundred yards from the crucible so it’s a very mineral rich creek, not far from the big gold rush of the 1800’s, just thought I’d look for any videos about crucibles, Auquchigger came down and went bottle hunting with my nephew and I about 5 years ago, super nice guy, thanks for sharing, God Bless & GL&HH!!!

Nice to see the Chig. Should go over that area with a metal detector. Old coins and maybe some buttons that came out of those crucibles(sp?).

    • @mikeblair2594

@@lanagraves4778 It wouldn't be the borax. Borax looks like a brown glass in this context. It a blacksmithing context you would find tiny iron spheres from using borax to forge weld. It cleans the iron/steel of scale and allows the two objects to fuse into one. When you see blacksmithing in the movies you always see a shower of sparks. That usually only happens when one is forge welding because the work piece is shaped in such a way as to squeeze out the flux and dross when you hit it with a hammer completing the weld. It can happen when forging poor wrought iron because you're forcing out all of the impurities.

Awesome finds!! It'd be so neat to go dig in an old mine dump someday!! There's some fairly old mines from about the 20s and 30s around here so there could be some cool old stuff too. I wonder if some of those crucibles could be cupels used in the refining process to oxidize lead? It's pretty crazy how many small crucibles there are though, would be neat to see the process they went through to refine the metals!!

I've retrieved a surprising amount of gold in the bottom of such smelting cups as they Crack inside , get reglazed over & over until the the top rim chips or cracks too severely to hold heat . They would get tossed like rubbish usually en mass 80 -100 years ago .
