      Thanks a ton! Important to note “higher” is relative, once we go above 25% for instance there are notable disadvantages. With healing, this also is relative to what one is healing from, if candida or digestive issues sure no fat may help, if instead it’s hormonal issues or a eating disorder or skin issues, it may not. Timeframe also comes into play, a few days or weeks is one thing but then months or longer is different. A slippery slope I’ve seen is a perception that any fat is bad and should be avoided, or that it slows detox and thus is inferior. Like most things some flexibility and seasonality with a focus on lifestyle rather than short term protocols is the most balanced approach.

      I agree, if dealing with severe digestive issues, such as IBD, no fat is crucial for healing the inner lining, and that healing time can typically last about 3-6 months of no fat. After that, small amounts of fat should be brought back in. Going no fat or very low fat for a few months corrected my hormonal issues.

    • @plantbasedethos5726
      @plantbasedethos5726 3 роки тому +2

      @@Flillipower Yes exactly what i was thinking, anyone with real digestive issues will struggle with vegetables and high fat foods, especially nuts and seeds which are really hard to digest anyways! For the majority of the people consuming more fat should not cause any issues and can have a few benefits also!

    • @Flillipower
      @Flillipower 3 роки тому +1

      @@plantbasedethos5726 you are absolutely correct, great insight. In addition to no fat through the months of healing for someone with severe digestive issues, veggies also have to be juiced or blended or even lightly steamed if not going 100% raw right away. Healing those types of issues takes much time and diligence before fatty foods or whole raw veggies can be added in.

  • @eph3317

    There are trace amounts of fat in all fruits and vegetables. I eat probably less than 1% "radical" fats - avocado, nuts, seeds, etc...I find that I have more energy and feel better when I am almost never eating those foods. I've gone for months, without eating those overt fats and have not had any issues. If someone has bad skin, or hair issues, I believe it could be something else in their diet, like nutritional yeast, kombucha, vinegar, salt, preservatives...etc.
    If you're not getting in leafy greens, lots of whole fruits and veggies then that's probably where you're having some issues. Too much fats requires the liver to overproduce bile and weakens bile production overtime.

    • @eph3317
      @eph3317 3 роки тому

      For Digestive issues I recommend the Monoeating protocol in Cleanse to Heal by the Medical Medium
      THe protocol goes like this for example: 32 oz of Lemon/lime water upon waking
      wait 30 min
      32 oz celery juice
      wait 30 min
      Eat as many bananas as you need to feel full
      Optional: lettuce when you're eating bananas
      You can squirt lemon/lime juice on your meals, but that's it no seasoning, salt, etc.
      DO this for at least 7 days depending upon the severity of your digestive issues
      You can do the cleanse for months even years

    • @TheRawAdvantage
      @TheRawAdvantage  3 роки тому +1

      Absolutely true that there is some fat in fruits and veggies, dates are near 0 but they are a odd exception. Tropical fruits on average have higher fat levels, if eating a abundance of high quality tropical fruit it’s much easier and nutritionally safer. I too have gone weeks n a month or two here or there without overts and for sure agree it’s a high energy way to live, that said longer term experience and insight shows there is vast value to adding some nuts and seeds / fatty fruits and potential drawbacks to avoiding them long term. Those that do are more likely to experience skin issues, hormonal issues and more. I am not saying it’s impossible to be overt fat free longer term but rather that those issues are much more likely to crop up when fats are completely avoided.
      Under eating fats can also reduce bile production, the subject of this video is low
      Plant fats which are easy to digest and would be quite unlikely to bring up any issues with weakening bile production.

    • @TheRawAdvantage
      @TheRawAdvantage  3 роки тому

      Mono meals and simplistic eating of fruit and veggies can be great for digestion, that said I wouldn’t recommend such a protocol to be followed for months or years.
      While bananas are common for moni esting due to low price, higher calorie and being satisfying, almost any ripe fruit that you enjoy will do. Greens are a great addition especially if you start to crave salt.
      This all said variety is important over the medium to longer term / seasons is important for nutritional variance, enjoyment and microbial diversity in the gi.

    Interesting points. I'm right on the edge. Two days ago I had a huge salad including an avo, with a walnut based dressing. Felt fine. As an experiment yesterday, just ate fruits and veggies, no avos, no nuts/seeds. Felt even better. Body responded better, more muscular definition, easier nose breathing. I did notice after a couple of the fruits I felt somewhat deprived even though I wasn't "hungry," so I purposely just ate more even though I can't say I wanted to. Ended up for the day eating about 10 bananas, two whole papayas, 2 lbs of grapes in addition to some greens/veggies. Felt great, perfectly satiated. So maybe it is a calorie thing. This morning hair feels thicker, skin shinier, breathing exclusively through my nose (and I was a heavy mouth breather).
    So what do you say...even though when you're not hungry you still go ahead and pack in the fruits even if the desire isn't there? Always thought, above anything else, you're supposed to listen to the body.

    • @TheRawAdvantage

      The best test is over weeks, months and even years, in every way I’ve felt and seen better results with a well balanced high fruit approach.
      Depending on our food and health history, fitness and even mindset / beliefs it can take some time to really come into physical and mental clarity/ balance with eating enough fruits and greens as well as the best timing / size / frequency of meals, which also changes over time. The number one reason people have challenges and stray from a raw diet is not getting enough calories from fruit / not having a good education around what a balanced raw diet looks like. It’s for sure helpful to listen to the body, but even more so once one has shed a lot of mental emotional and physical toxaemia that can pull us toward “foods” with side effects.

      More than my pleasure, kudos in this!
      This is a sticky point for many people, some would say never mix sweet fruit with fat in any amounts and others would say it’s ok in small amounts and once mixed it becomes it’s own food.
      Personally I fall in between, I do have that exact combo on occasion and think the ratios have a bigger impact, but, do notice it digests slower and is more prone to burps. It’s not a combo I would do everyday but in those amounts and on occasion imho it’s not a big concern. This all said indeed it is more optimal to keep the fats to the last meal of the day primarily with veggies. Hope this helps 🙏🏼

    I will have been a raw vegan 80/10/10 style for a year in June, thanks a lot to you! But a few months ago I noticed that my nails were splitting and breaking off easily, as they were too soft. Then my skin became super dry, scaly and itchy. Now my face is breaking out. I figured it was from not enough fat, so I increased that but have not seen any difference. But then I read it could be from not enough omega 3s, which I hadn't placed any emphasis on. What do you think?

    • @TheRawAdvantage
      @TheRawAdvantage  3 роки тому +2

      Awww kudos in your first year, blessed to have been a inspiration in that in any regard. Always room for small tweaks and improvements as time goes on! As far as fats go, I highly recommend a balanced efa profile of roughly 1:4 - 1:1 for the omega 3 to 6 ratio and to get between 7-15% fat on average over the weeks months and years. The easiest way to do this is to enjoy a abundance of fresh fruit and greens, no restriction, as they already have that ratio range, and then add in 1-2 closed handfuls (on average) of seeds / nuts at the dinner meal 3-7 days a week. The best fats specifically for their efa profile are #1 Hemp then chia and flax which are higher in 3, then walnuts, other than that I rotate in pumpkin, Brazil, and others in lower amounts.
      Another aspect can be quality and amount of greens / veggies in the diet, aiming for 2-6% of total calories coming from the above is helpful, this sounds small but is larger than most would assume!
      Hope this helps, both Jesse and I are always stoked to connect and fine tune if desired 🤗

    80 10 10 is a transition to 90 5 5. I've been 100% raw since 1999, fruit & greens since 2009. No overt fat allows my health and physical performance to thrive. Literally. Absolutely no problem getting enough calories. A little effort is all you need. I USED to eat overt fat with occasional nuts, seeds or avocado (superior). That was transitional diet mode. But then, the overt fat only prevented proper assimilation of the fruit fuel, which is the way our body works. No libido lost. Just the opposite from zero overt fat. In fact my libido is better now (and I am an old fart compared to most of you) than when I was less than half my present age. 80 10 10 is a great macro proportion for beginners. But then your body (the boss) will tell you to lose the training wheels.

    • @TheRawAdvantage
      @TheRawAdvantage  3 роки тому

      Haha I’ll admit I would wholly disagree with this sentiment. While it’s doable and I agree it feels great when you learn how to get enough calories and greens doing so more people have issues when they omit overt fats, definitely not something I would encourage long term. A few weeks or months here or there sure but the experience of many shows it to be more problematic than worthwhile. This comes from coaching hundreds and peer to peering with Og’s who have been coaching others for 20-40 years.

    I read that raw nuts and seeds arent that great because they got phytic acid in them. They say that we have to soak and sprout them to decrease that acid for better digestion.
    I would like to hear something about that from you because you seem so honest and passion about the topic like myself.
    Do you already have a video about it or could you just tell me your opinion?

    • @TheRawAdvantage
      @TheRawAdvantage  2 роки тому +1

      This is multilayered and likely better for a video but I’ll do my best here. Firstly there is a fair amount of controversy around this topic with some newer research showing little benefit to soaking and potentially detriment in some ways. If your eating appreciable quantities of nuts it can be a good idea as it increases the water content and neutralize enzyme inhibitors anecdotally making them easier to digest. Another big aspect people talk on is reducing phytates by soaking, some studies show there is little reduction and in some cases, as with almonds, phytates may be increased. The claim is phytates bind minerals and leach then from the body. The other side of that is that phytates also decrease inflammation and act as a antioxidant, furthermore there is also nutrient loss in the soaking water as well. To me it’s not a cut and dry issue nor something I worry about for various reasons. The largest being, I don’t eat nor recommend eating enough nuts or seeds for it to be a concern. If someone has poor digestion and notices it helps I’d say go for it, but, as with many things there is a mix of fact and fiction and some religious fervour with the claims. Overall they are nutritious and better to include than avoid imho, just not in large amounts, 1 to two closed handfuls every day or two is enough and I personally would go for seeds like hemp chia and flax over nuts most of the time, walnuts the exception.

      I agree, there are confusing infortmations on this topic.

      Sprouts can be fun for sure, I’ve had periods of time where I eat a fair amount and have also gone multiple years without any at all. What do you recommend for people who live in Northern countries? I live up in Scotland and would not mind to eat more fruits. But the only local fruits which I can buy here are Apples from England and (when in season here) Strawberries. Everything else is imported from where ever in the world. I usually only buy bananas and oranges, sometimes kiwis and always appples and frozen berries. I don't want to buy more exotic fruits because of long transport journeys and they often just don't taste well, were picked unripe and don't ripen enough at home. I don't want to eat bananas all the time.
    And why is it bad to mix in my flaxseed into my banana/greens/tumeric/ginger smoothie?

    • @TheRawAdvantage
      @TheRawAdvantage  3 роки тому

      First and foremost Id recommend people do what they want, hopefully what makes them feel best, at least up until it doesn't and then from there to try on a change. If one specifically wants to go raw vegan I would seek out the best fruit and veg one can find, focusing on ones that are enjoyed regardless if its imported or not and get some education on what a healthy raw diet looks like, possibly with some extra support. Learning how to pick fruit, which is the best in each season, how to tell if it will ripen properly etc is a skill that takes time. With practice it gets easier, now no matter where ive travelled I have found I can find decent fruit, truly Id say we are blessed and back in the garden.
      Ive spent most of my time raw in northern Canada and know people from all over the world, including Scotland Ireland England etc that do it too. I am currently in Sweden, very truthfully I don't feel its much different no matter where I am, that is unless it literally is a super small town without a grocery store. When considering local I personally consider local to our hemisphere. Ive done the math and its still better for the environment to eat a raw fruit and veg based diet, even if it means going for imported sub tropicals / tropicals than it is to live almost any other diet. The one exception may be if one bikes to the farmers market and literally eats local whole foods only with minimal cooking etc. As soon as any animal foods, processed foods, imported processed foods, or habitual cooking comes into play the carbon footprint and resources used skyrocket far above imported fruits n veg.
      Seeking out ethnic markets, looking into mail order fruit, talking to produce managers and trying lots of new recipes all helps. No need eat any one fruit all the time, many people pick bananas as they are inexpensive, calorie and nutrient rich and available year round. This all said it is wise to have at least one sweet fruit as a staple and as at least one of the daily meals in order to get enough calories, this is the number 1 reason people fall off.
      I wouldn't say its "Bad" to put flax seeds in your smoothie but it does slow down the digestion which can cause fermentation. All relative, a few tsp or tbsp on occasion with sweet fruit likely wont cause issues, larger amounts habitually predictably does with blood sugar issues, yeast overgrowths and the above fermentation / gut issues being part.
      Hope this all helps a bit

    I make curries with soaked and boiled chickpeas, cooked carrots, cooked kale or spinach if there's no good kale at the store, and I make a sause from almonds and carrots. Is this good enough? What other vegetables should I be eating? I also sometimes add spinach to fruit smoothies, but I usually don't because I've heard for it to turn some of its chemicals into antioxidants from toxins it needs to come into contact with saliva first.

      It's really hard to answer this question as "is this good enough" is all relative to our beliefs, goals and preferences. I prefer raw as it leads me to feel better in all ways, taking a step back a cooked curry like you mention is quite healthful too! One thing I would shift would be substituting the almonds for a higher omega 3 balanced fat like hemp seeds, and or adding flax seeds to the mix. Always good to eat a variety of fruits and veggies, switching it up through the seasons and trying new things. I personally wouldn't worry about what you mention with the smoothie and in fact encourage chewing our smoothies anyways. Hope this helps!

    5:11 Yes it is. :) I speak for myself. And I'm still a newbie. Without the fat I eat and eat and eat and eat... Actually I think I'll just be a fat raw vegan.

      It takes a complete refraining of how much food is normal, on a low fat plan it’s hard to over eat but really easy to under eat. That said with practice and application the rewards are huge!

    Do you think there are any disadvantages to eating 2 types of fat in one meal, for example a salad with avocado and hemp seeds?

    • @TheRawAdvantage
      @TheRawAdvantage  2 роки тому

      The only potential disadvantage is over eating fat, if you keep both in lower percentages then I’ve found it works just fine. A benefit of the combo you mention is a more balanced omega ratio than if you just had the avo, I often add a tsp of flax or chia to any seed im using to boost the omega 3’s.

    the funny thing about soaking nuts is
    that its imo not at all relevant for phytic acid or some lectins or some crap like that
    its literally important to make em wet 😂
    dry food hard af to digest (and some can even actually hurt u that r very hard..like almonds for example)

    • @TheRawAdvantage
      @TheRawAdvantage  3 роки тому +3

      While it is helpful to increase the water content there are also chemical reactions that make certain nutrients more bioavailabile and easier to digest.

    hi, thanks for your videos!
    could you please tell me your opinion about mixing fats with starches, as I'm eating cooked food and kinda really crave adding fats to it
    is it as bad for digestion as mixing fruit with fat?

    • @TheRawAdvantage
      @TheRawAdvantage  3 роки тому

      More that my pleasure! Great question, while some food combining charts avoid this combo fats digest well with starches. Imho the bigger thing to watch for is how much fat as it’s easy to mix a lot with starches.

    • @pravdanil

      yeah, it definitely doesn't feel too bad, as comparing to fruit/fat mix
      thanks!

    • @TheRawAdvantage
      @TheRawAdvantage  3 роки тому

      Pleasure, indeed it’s a different senario, with fruit and fat the issue is that fat holds up the digestive speed most favourable to fruit, being fast, causing potential fermentation issues as well as over production of insulin. Cooked starches on the other hand have a more similar digestive speed as fat and do not have the fermentation issue.

      Not a biggie at all, Jesse is talking about mixing sweet fruit with fat. I personally don’t have a issue with it in small amounts from time to time but would agree best keeping them separate 🙌🏼

    I have a lot of thoughts about these things. First a question. I have raw sprout-able flax seeds do they need to be soaked? I grind them first. They probably should be soaked but for some reason I thought flax doesn't need to be soaked. Now some thoughts.
    I believe that we thrive best in a more tropical environment (I mean, we literally could die without heat or air conditioning where I live so it's clearly not ideal human environment). So we would naturally have access to many of the higher fat fruits like durian. So I do think that we would thrive best on a little fat in the diet. Also I looked at what some of our closer relatives eat and they tend to eat a lot of fruit but also a lot of vegetation and some nuts and seeds. So I think that it would be important for us to eat a small amount. Also, something interesting. Our relatives intentionally forage and eat in such a way so that every where they take food, it will easily replace itself quickly. In other words they do not decimate the environment, they help it out.
    I eat fruit for breakfast and lunch and then a veggie based dinner with avocado and/or flax. This seems to be working well for me. If I under ate on calories, I eat dates to get them in. It's an easy calorie dense thing to eat. It's not ideal because I eat them at night after a veggie/higher fat meal but it scares me if I didn't get enough calories. I do not have digestive issues, I do not feel any bloating or anything.

    • @TheRawAdvantage
      @TheRawAdvantage  3 роки тому

      All fun thoughts and questions.
      Personally I’m not worried about soaking seeds such as flax chia or hemp, especially in the small amounts used in a low fat raw diet. If one has trouble digesting them or wants to get even more from them then you certainly can, but flax and chia specifically are a bit tricky with their jelling properties. As a aside best to grind right before use rather than in larger batches.
      We for sure are tropical creatures and interestingly ripe tropical fruits are typically higher in fat than sub tropical and temperate fruits. We would naturally get more even without overt fats there, but still some are a good addition to the diet. Beyond observing our relatives and postulating we can look to the experience of those before us which shows there is negligible if any benefit to avoiding nuts and seeds and many benefits to including them. Hemp, Chia, flax, pumpkin, walnut, brazil imho are the best staples in that order.
      A trick for getting in enough fruit calories before dinner is to focus at least one meal around sweet fruit, ideally lunch, and then have acid or sub acid fruit before dinner treating it like a full meal itself before making your dinner portion. If craving sweet after dinner it’s a sure sign not enough has been eaten in the day. Personally what you mention is a habit I would aim to break as everything is cumulative.
      Hope this helps!🙌🏼

    • @TheRawAdvantage

      Simply place in more enough water to cover and soak for 6+ hours. If longer than 12 you may wish to drain, rinse and add fresh water. Drain and lightly rinse before using.

    Can you explain a bit better the thing about the bile production? If you don’t eat overt fats anymore then you won’t be able to produce bile? I have huge digestive issues

    • @TheRawAdvantage
      @TheRawAdvantage  3 роки тому +2

      It’s not that you won’t be able to produce bile but if you do not create the demand then the body can lower production. Some herbs, celery, dandelion, garlic, etc can help increase bile production. Digestion is about much more than just food, our emotional state when eating, sleep, stress levels, and activity level can all play a part.

    i eat 25% cal from fat (or rather in less fluctuating terms: 1g fat/kg bodyweight/day) 🤔
    below ~17% i sleep crappy (i notice this within just a few days), less hormones (i look more like boy and less manly after a while), face looks less filled out (mid-term) and joints r less lubricated (mid-term...u dont actually notice this until u went very low fat for a while and then reintroduce fat and be like "😯this is new") 🥱

    • @TheRawAdvantage

      In most cases this is simply a case of underrating total calories, rather than not getting enough fat. If we get enough on a lower fat diet none of the issues you mention occur.
