I met John Inman at a PBS Store signing in the late 90's and he was so nice and humble and autographed a picture and we had a picture taken together. I was so sad to hear about his passing in 2007. Everyone on the show but Mike Berry (Mr. Spooner) is gone now.
Even though this show originally aired way before my time I have always loved it so much. As a child they used to broadcast it all the time on tv and I watched it with my parents. Great show.
I was born in 89. They played the shit out of this when I was a kid. I remember staying up late and watching this. Had no idea wtd they were even talking about.
Of course, Mr. Humphries and the rest of the sales floor characters were the focus of the show, but for me, it was Mr. Harman with his down to earth, masculine but mischievous character that I always thought really put the icing on the already wonderful cake. Captain Peacock and Mr. Rumbold may have had managerial status, but it was Mr. Harman that clearly wielded the real power. I absolutely loved his character as he made the rest look even better and they were already fantastic.
Mr. Humphries is my absolute favorite out of all the characters ! All of his quotes are my favorite but the one that is my absolute favorite is "Do you mind if I have a word with my friend ?"
Lol. Men like Mr. Humphreys are the best. Growing up as a child, there was one guy that owned a store opposite our flat. Then, we thought he was the funniest guy ever. He was very effeminate and very kind, and we didn't even knew what the word gay meant but my entire family loved him and he'd spend time at our place while his brother watched the shop. Awesome memories. I went back home some years ago, and heard that he's married now to his husband, and I couldn't stop thinking, Omg he was gay all along and we didn't even know cos we didn't know what to call that character then. Nobody was like him in the entire neighbourhood and it was so refreshing. Since then I have always disliked the way some people make it out as being gay is an influenced trait. People are born not attracted to the opposite sex and they've always been. It's just as a kid, you never really think about it. Love is Love. Sorry for the paragraph. It's just that your comment reminded me of such beautiful memories.
Mr Humphries was totally hilarious and very funny. I loved him in this show R. I. John Inman. This show should have stayed on TV forever. Nothing lasts forever. I wish this show did. The whole cast was truly talented and funny as can be. Love them all
he was such an inspiration- even though his character was a stereotype it helps that people regularly accepted a character that was queer into their homes via television and could see how non threatening it all is. And he is wicked funny :D
he wasnt the only one ..remembr james dreyfus as Constable Goody in THIN BLUE LINE? HE ws hilarious. ..Larry Grayson too., Kenneth Willaims, Frankie Howerd Loved them all..
This can get confusing… On AYBS it was implied Mr. Humphries was not gay but more of a 'mommas boy'. The actor John Inman was gay. That is how many of the cast characterized it in interviews.
If this show was made today I wonder how it would differ. I heard that originally the show was meant for the Mr. Lucas character played by Trevor Bannister, but it slowly evolved to suit the entire cast roster.
i think they went a bit too far inthis episode makinghim dress up as miss santa. those were the days when actors werent paid millions and its a matter of do or starve
jessie james I used to act. I am a heterosexual, mind you. I dressed up as a teen girl and wasn't paid a dime. It was fun. Money isn't always important for an actor.
Everything Mr. Humphries does is the best.
While Mr. Lucas and Mr. Grainger were there, the entire cast was perfect.
Ah, John Inman, you will be missed

Janetta Martin, Ann Arbor, Michigan. in1996 and 1998.
What a nice memory
“Do as you like with him.”
“You wait till you’re asked!”
The first time I saw that I screamed
Love "Are You Being Served!"

Molly Worrell I agree

U can't beat it brilliant
Loved the program!!😍😍
i always loved his character long before i even knew that gay men existed, let alone that i was one!

What.
@@darwinkuby5846 what do you mean, what?
He wasn't a gay
Hmm. I don't see him as gay (but I can see why he may be seen as such). I see him as rather playful and non-caring.
Where did they say they came from?

MENSWEAAAAAARRRRR...
Oh hello mother...
Tu Maldita Madre so funny
Good thing this is only three minutes long. I'm afraid I may have passed out.
The Perfert Santa did it for me too🤣🤣

i heard the main actor quit because he was losing the spotlight to mr. humphries

MatchEntry I liked this gay character. I don't like any of the modern ones that I know of. And there are far too many of them.
Well said👍...Greetings from India
John Inman (Mr. Humphries) was a man before his time! Happily married and all...
He had a civil partner, but no spouse.
@@LogoMan7777 🤣🤣🤣
Mr Mercury ought to have paid him royalties for copying his funny walk!
Hmm... I could be wrong, but I think Mr. Humphries might have been gay.
RedJefe I read his partner was a man after he passed. I think they were together over 20 years.
You think?
He was...a secret....did "Come Out" Later
This can get confusing… On AYBS it was implied Mr. Humphries was not gay but more of a 'mommas boy'. The actor John Inman was gay. That is how many of the cast characterized it in interviews.
He was, but it wasn't appropriate to come out in the 70s in the UK

Wonder what Mr Lucas was looking for up under Mr Humphries dress!
Lol
😏
He is very cute! Anyone who says otherwise needs therapy. 😉
I was gonna say that to a Josuha Swain aka Swine cause he needs it! 🤣👍
What a icon this shows waaaaaaay ahed of it time

Mr Humphries makes the show 🎊
Back in the day when gay characters were defined by their sexuality .
♥
Great fun.
I would like to view the full episode of the 1st one
Let me get into the mood!!! Ohhhh!!
😃😅😆🤣👍👍👍👏👏👏
Classic
The legs on him hahaha, looks good on him.
Immortal!!! ❤️♥️🌏🌎🌍
John In'man.....what an appropriate name
i reckon he was "in" a few
Wow! XD
fruitcake4t I've thought the same thing about his name, lol.
Lmao
Okay, where's part 2? :-D
And Mrs slogan and Shirley s legs
😎
Dont worry it’ll ride up with wear
am I the only one who ships Mr. Humphries and Mr.Lucas?
Nope. I ship them.
What does "ships" mean?
Imagining a "relationship" between two people - typically fictional characters.
i think they're a great comedy duo. i wish the actor who played mr. lucas had stayed on.
Shit, I thought it was just me. 😂😂
I wish I had such legs!!
Why did Mr.Lucas leave the show?
He wanted to focus on stage career... that's y he left the show. He actually made a great addition to the team..
His one-liners at Mrs. Slocombe's expense were hilarious, as were the innuendos he made to Miss Brahms.
I heard a rumour that it was because of a...certain hand gesture he used in the German Week episode
cheap stupid jokes. i love it.
Look at his pretty legs!!!! 🦵
Is Mr Humphries gay?
He’s never “out” but its heavily implied:)
i think they went a bit too far inthis episode makinghim dress up as miss santa. those were the days when actors werent paid millions and its a matter of do or starve
i think the actor had fun with the character though i'm sure he'd prefer better pay
jessie james
I used to act.
I am a heterosexual, mind you.
I dressed up as a teen girl and wasn't paid a dime.
It was fun.
Money isn't always important for an actor.
@@MirekFe oh thats nice.. as long as you enjoyed. yes thats the more important aspect
