  • Bobbi the Karate Cat, Abby and Baxter, and Pitcher Plants make cameo appearances in this fun video about Venus Flytrap care, following Venus Flytraps through a year and looking closely at how they ‘look’ from winter dormancy through the hot, active, fast growing days of summer. Beautifully shot and edited, and if you’re a nature nerd this video has a lot of entertainment to offer beyond Venus Flytrap tips and care.

Thank you very much for this! I can't believe this isn't in 4k! That is how good your shots are!
You have an amazing eye and deliver a fantastic view of various forms of life interacting with the Flytraps/carnivorous garden. So very informational, entertaining and inspiring!
I live in Michigan and there is a carnivorous plant farm here local that I want to check out for sure now.
Keep up the good work! I can't wait to see what you can show us in 4k! I am sure you will be able to do that soon with the quality content you put out currently.
Please consider creating videos showing how to make both small and large scale terrariums for indooor settings.
P.S. - Is it possible to create an ecosystem hosting carnivorous plants that is healthy for reptiles, frogs or other small creatures that people may keep as pets (scorpions too!?)?

I got a fly trap as a gift for my sister without fully appreciating that they're kind of a mix between a plant and an animal as far as care goes. I was worried that I was giving her a pot full of constant work to do, but she's enjoyed tending it. They're probably the most interesting plant that I've ever encountered. It's really cool to see so many of them in one place. 👍

You have no idea how helpful this is! I've only gone through 2 summers since moving to the Carolinas from the midwest and it's remarkable what grows here. I never really knew Venus fly traps were native to so close to where I am.
I've had a backyard space for only a few months now and really got to dig into growing my own plants and produce for the first time. Now that it's cooling down I'm busy planning the space for next spring and this is just the fun touch I needed! I'm excited to start a tub of a few plants come next spring. May need to figure out something different come winter as it does get a bit chillier here in the mountains but I would love to hear more on your advice for keeping the plants indoors over winter months.
Truly excited to see the life this invites into my yard as I've already spotted a few frogs.

You are such a talented story teller. I tried keeping a fly trap in Reno, NV. I used the distilled water and let it soak up the water from below, but one day I left it outside to get some real sun, and it happened to get up to 106 that day. When I brought it in, it was dead. Dry heat and record heat doesn't help them, so I'll give up while living in a high altitude (4500k ft) desert.

Thank you!! I struggle with fly traps as I have to winter them indoors. In Northwestern Ontario, Canada. Zone 3A, 3B. We have native pitcher plants and sundue plants. They live in the peat moss. The pitcher plants usually completely encased in moss with just the opening showing. I have a collected pitcher plant out by my pond, it does well there year round. There are tropical pitchers I would love to try. Plus flytraps. I can keep them for a time, then they go into dormancy seemingly, but just die. Maybe minerals, I don't know. I was always told to keep them in terracotta pots, mistake one I suppose, I guess I should melt snow for them! Or find distilled water. Great video!

I used to keep/propagate flytraps. I had close to 100 individual plants at one point (four different breeds). After my father died, I stopped caring for them. #noexcuses I have one plant of indeterminate breed left over that is- at minimum- 16 years old. He's slow, and kind of "senile": In the spring, after hibernation, I never know what he's going to do, as he doesn't follow the standard "spring leaf > summer leaf" growing schedule anymore. It's really weird. I just put him down for hibernation last week, and he's still all tall spring leaves. Last year he jumped straight to short summer leaves, and didn't put out any spring leaves at all. His traps don't put on any color anymore either, despite barely eating in over a decade.
    Any thoughts?
I recently found some seeds in my refrigerator that I'd collected in 2005 and 2006. I'm going to try sowing them this coming spring and see if anything happens.

I just don't know how you do it, Brady. Saw this pop up on the sub feed and said "nah, don't need to watch that." Then I clicked on it and somehow it's 17 minutes later and I don't regret it. I have a black thumb and only the regular amount of interest in flytraps, but I was entertained the whole way through.

Nice work, with the plants and the film! You shouldn't be so hard on the weeds that pop up with fly traps, I've gotten a couple of orchids, among other nice bog plants.

Brady: You're such a unique thinker - venus fly traps, Leon, what other unique interests do you nurture?

Since I live in a drier climate, should I store my venus flytraps in a terrarium to keep the humidity up? Also, should I feed them dead insects since there aren't many buzzing around my house? Also, is there a big plan for all the venus flytraps you have?

You are a fascinating man! I've watched u for Leon, but I just happened to buy a venus trap a few months ago. This came up on my feed in perfect time for me bc I was wondering if my little guy (i named him Seymour!) was doing ok.
How do you put them into dormancy if you live in places too cold to keep them outside? (I live in MN!)

That’s a great question. Some people will put them in the back of the refrigerator for a few months during winter, and some will put them in a garage that is not prone to freezing but stays in the 40 F range for the winter.

I leave my flytrap on a windowsill in the late summer/autumn to let it start acclimating to the colder weather. (In colder weather, I close the window and leave the plant in the space between the screen and inner window so it is still somewhat sheltered. As long as it doesn't get a frost, it'll be okay.) Then, around halloween, I let the pot dry out for a day or two, then place the whole thing in a ziplock bag and put it in the door of my refrigerator until around Easter... shorter, if it's a particularly warm spring (but no less than 4 months). When your plant is ready to wake up, take it out of the fridge, let it warm up for a day, then unbag it, water it and resume your normal care schedule until next halloween...

Also MN, my sister puts them in the garage under growlights and keeps an eye on the temperature.

    Just curious
    1. What is the purpose for growing Venus fly traps?
    2. Does it cut your finger if you stick your hand in them?

3:50 is there any particular reason you use distilled water instead of tap water?

    • @Bradybrandwood
      @Bradybrandwood  Рік тому +2

Yes because distilled water is very low in minerals and fertilizers like ammonia, nitrites, nitrates. City tap water will be high in ammonia, fluoride, chlorine,… and minerals and other nutrients.

This was fascinating, Canada isn’t the best climate for these plants, although I grow Jack in the pulpits and Arum successfully. I did well with a Nepenthes for several years, until the squirrels dug it out while I was away.
You have developed a nice little ecosystem there, and I would spend a lot of time just watching all the small lives playing out. Cats remember that they were once worshipped as Gods, and assume they still should be.
I always enjoy your offerings Brady, you are, (as my Grandmother would say), a man of many parts. Thank you for sharing some of those parts with us, you have a wonderful ease of style.🖤🇨🇦

In the lab, we fruit fly geneticists keep the renegades under control with manmade flytraps, namely milk bott;les with apple cider vinegar and soap with a cone taped to the top, that has only a small hole in the bottom. Flies go in but can't navigate out.
Flytrap eat only one fly per month? I imagine this means house fly. Bug giant flies. Assuming they could eat ten flies per month if they were fruit fly sized, is ther a way you could recommend for mass production, to allow, say 1000 flies per month?

Venus Flytraps are so interesting. I might try my hand at growing one after this informative video. Give Leon a hug for me.
