I'm a girl and I love train sets. My daddy used to have several set up in the basement. He no longer puts them out. 😞 Living in an area serviced by the Acela gives me an appreciation of the train. Great review by a handsome host. 😇
Great review, way to pay it forward for the new and younger guys and gals in our hobby. It's important to help them as they are the future of our great hobby.
YYEEEAAAHHH I just recently purchased a brand new of these bad boys for $182.50 on EBAY!!!! I think i got one heck of a deal. I am going to get black road and more grey road track. I am going to use the black road for my frieght trains, and use the grey road for my Acela and ICE 3 bullet trains!!!
Trainsallday it’s a really decent hobby to be candid with you. This hobby is about having time, space, and serious $$$$$. Trans is one of the the top 5 expensive hobbies in the world!!!
I guess that they don't have that many delays on the NE corridor because they own the tracks and they're not bound by the freight railroad on that line. In Chicago, we have a commuter branch of Metra, called Metra Electric, and this commuter line experiences the fewest delays because it runs on tracks with catenaries, and it does not share trackage with freights.
I bought the BACHMANN ACELLA set when the prototype arrived on Amtrak. I actually have 2 sets(the second without tracks and accessories). Excellent review! ☺
I'e been watching these videos for a month or so now as I mentally plan my train and layouts (and wish I actually had time, space, and money hah), and I really appreciate the beginner videos :D
Yes Robert the Heartland Flyer does the same with different equipment mainly because there isn't much of a coach yard at either Oklahoma City or Fort Worth like there are in other major cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City at Amtrak's major hubs.
Double enders are popular in Europe no room to turn them most lines concentrate their trains on tight schedules. The new model Acela from the front looks like a Dragonfly.
Am a fairly experienced HO modeler in European trains but this will be my first DCC which at 120 mph will be about half the speed of a German ICE or French TGV. I was hoping to see you show a) how the various features - lights, horn, rate of acceleration/deceleration, the sound before doors close & anythg else, are activated from the power pack b) whether the same power pack will control a second Acela or other DCC equipped loco on the same track c) where I can buy a set for 275-under 300$ that you'd mentioned
I am re- entering the hobby and found this ....... I have the cgance to pull the trigger on a old-new stock Gacela ..... You should do some more content on, how to get started again :) Cheers bro !
Great review as always James! This set is one of my favorites. Very well done and great value for the money spent. FYI it does make a pretty sweet train for around the Christmas tree. 😃
Love your review,Question...What do you think will happen to the old Acelas once the new ones come on line, will they be used perhaps within another Corridor or will they be scrapped (your opinion)...
I know I'm late, it wasn't mentioned in the video and it adds no functionality to the train set itself, but the doors on the sides of the power cars do open, just a cool feature I like that is often overlooked by most manufacturers.
Im actually looking into a good first start up ho scale set so far I am torn between the Bachmann rail chief and this one. I will be starting a layout on my porch I can't wait to set that up as well. Great video looking forward to more videos. Also thank you for your service :)
Awesome video. I started watching your vids because yor have some that show you just starting out and making rookie mistakes. Don't be afraid to show more tips to help the newbie enjoy the hobby.
Bachmann did a very nice job on the Acela Trainset, can we expect the same type of quality if and when they get the Avelia liberty next generation Acela trainset l think so.......
Hey James, nice review. I just bought this set from TrainWorld in February for $249. Not that it's important, nor do I understand the need for it, but that little door on the two end units (locomotives) opens. The interior lighting is nice as is the interior detail. My disappointments are: at home on the Bachmann 'EZ-Track' (they should rename it 'EZ-CRAP') it and every set similar to it constantly derails. The other issue is that the headlights or red marker lights don't operate on a DCC layout like at my club. I took apart the EZ-Track oval due to major getting pissed off with the Acela and my two other HST (High Speed Train) sets which are the Bachmann Virgin Pendolino Class 221, and the new Hornby Virgin Pendolino Class 390 constantly derailing on the oval which was put together correctly. I now have just the straight EZ-Track on a counter as my HO test track. On that track, the dummy headlights/ditch lights and marker lights work, but NOT on the layout at my club which is DCC. I've tried without success to reach someone at Bachmann, but being the unprofessional bunch that they are, I've never gotten a returned call or anyone picking up in the service dept. so I've given up. At the club, we have Digitrax and on the controller, there are only 99 speed steps so it doesn't seem to go extremely fast as in the prototypical sense. After the two decoders are installed in my new Hornby Virgin Pendolino Class 390 (the Class 221 is for home use on my future DC/DCC layout), I intend on racing the Acela vs the Pendolino and I'm certain that the Pendolino will eat the Acela for lunch. This will be my LAST Bachmann product as my last purchase several months ago, a DD40AX which has weak sound, two motors that couldn't pull a greasy string out of a cat's rear and disappointing performance. I should've paid the additional $200+ and bought the Athearn version. Bachmann builds cheap crap. Since I'm on a HST buying spree, my next purchase will be the Walthers Amtrak Metroliner and one more Hornby OO scale HST run in England. Here's the Acela at my club... ua-cam.com/video/8AZ6g8L53mE/v-deo.html
Oh yeah, the other complaint about the Acela are those couplers. I WISH that coupling was as easy as you demonstrated. I have to lay the cars either upside down, or on their side in order to couple them then gently roll them over onto the track. The couplers are cheap plastic that can break easily.
bhigdaddymark Actually these couplers have electrical wiring as well to operate the electrical lights in all of the coaches. How many Kadee type couplers do the same? Bachmann sells these couplers separately, it is a good idea to buy and store extras.
SeaToby11 Thanks, but I haven't a CLUE as to WHAT you're talking about, and apparently, neither do you. Last Thursday (April 9, 2015) I spoke to someone at Bachmann in the service department (and that was a followup phone call from Tuesday April 7, 2015) and I made sure to ask him about there being a wire of sorts in the couplers to carry power to the interior lighting and he said absolutely not, the power is sourced from (as I thought) the TRUCKS. I examined the plastic couplers just to be sure after I first read your response and as I thought would be the case, I found nothing to support your claim. I wrote it off as being just another UA-cam armchair wannabe 'Expert' and nothing more......
You haven't a clue as to what you're saying. The most irritating thing about UA-cam is all of these effen 'experts' like yourself who don't know jack sh*t yet want to sound like they're some authority or something. The couplers are PLASTIC and DO NOT CARRY ANY ELECTRICITY NOR DO ANYTHING ELECTRONICALLY AT ALL AS THEY DON'T "ALLOW" FOR ANYTHING THEY'RE PLASTIC ONLY AND SERVE NO OTHER PURPOSE THAN TO COUPLE CARS TOGETHER. This particular set to my knowledge ONLY comes in DCC with TWO decoders. At the very least, do as I did and check with Bachmann and get your facts straight before trying to sound like some expert that knows NOTHING. Call Bachmann and stop with the pointless, immature need to comment on what you don't know. Bachmann: 215-533-1600 Bachmann Service Dept: 800-356-3910 Now call THEM and try to impress them with your lack of knowledge and STFU here as you're NOT impressing anyone other than yourself with your idiotic demonstration of self-worth....
rofl in the early 90s i got the classic rails without the roadbed and man that was a royal PITA putting together and i cant tell u how many times ive popped loose a joint taking down a set now wanting to get back into the hobby ive seen they made things a bit easier do they come without the bed being so high up?
Only real issue with these trains is the passenger car couplers can break easily. Other than that issue it's a great trainset. The couplers although flimsy are actually pretty close to prototypical it's almost like a spear. And unless issues with cars arise the sets are not usually disconnected.
Great review can't wait to get my first set to get started. Which is more worth it if you all don't mind me asking the Bachmann rail chief or this one. I am torn between the two
bnsf6951 I like this video, especially your advice in the second half concerning ho scale models . Another resource I also found helpfull for train ho layout.I am enjoying a lot of watch it.
I think that in reality, both power cars work, and they have 6 coaches. And in reality, Acelas were meant to go 165 mph, but are limited to 150 mph by the infrastructure in the NEC. Awesome model, though

With model railroading condensing is okay, one doesn't have to have one hundred car trains, or eight car Acela trains. Size of layout doesn't matter with model railroading hobby. Even a 0-6-0 switcher starter set provides the ILLUSION of being a useful engine pulling their consist.
These seem built well if you look them up in Bachmann parts that gives you the exploded view of the model.Impressive.Does the dummy engine come with lighting?
Hey James great review, Thanks for sharing. I wish you could have showed the way to program the dcc. I have the set but it will not work on dcc. I'm using the Bachman Dcc controller and can't program it. Can you help, me?? Thanks Gerry..
Thank you very much for this. At one of the local hobby shops I felt looked down upon for being a 'Noob'. I just want to get a set for my young boys for Christmas. I'm looking at the DCC Thunder Chief. Any thoughts on this. Again great job for we Noobs!

The problem I have with DCC and it's really the only problem aside from making it a pain in the neck to convert older DC engines to DCC, is that DCC engines that are fast in real life, aren't that fast with DCC, DC they will fly if you let 'em. Now granted I don't have an Acela or anything like that. But I do have a bachmann SP Gs-4 with DCC equipped from the start and it's much slower than my bachmann Southern 722 that was switched to DCC. So its a DCC Train that comes with a DC controller, that's kinda inconvenient. Is there an inexpensive DCC controller you would suggest for someone who intends on running3 or 4 trains at once maybe? Can I use the stainless stuff to extend my track? Also one more, haha. Do you have to use the terribly expensive turnouts with DCC, or can I get more reasonable manual ones? Thanks
You are an expert that is why I only trust you and IC82 for reviews. I do need help on my side of the hobby though. I am having trouble finding a good dcc controller as I don't like Hornby, my dad won't trust NCE and DIGITRAX and also MRC is just weird. That leaves me with the bachmann one which can only store like 10 trains. However my opinions on these controllers might be "blind" and if they are tell me the positives. For now JUST HELP ME!!!!
Yep, the layout is already under way but the first video doesn't air until May 20th for the intro and June 3rd for the first segment. I have pre recorded and scheduled several videos so that I have time to work on the layout.

Nice! I Am Just Like A Few Several Subway Stops Away From My Home Station Stop To The Station Stop That Train World Is Near! I'm Just Like A Few Several Minutes Away From My Home To Train World By Subway Or A Car Ride From My Father!
I am just staring to learn about DCC vs. HO Trains. DCC is run on 15 volts AC . HO Train is run on DC and has a second voltage for accessories which is 17 volts AC. . Both each HO and DCC each have different styles rail. I do not believe they are interchangeable track styles.. . . Legacy uses 1/2 sign wave for positive ---- outer rail and the other 1/2 sign wave for negative ---- inner rail center rail for neutral. O gauge rail used. There may be different styles track for O gauge rail non interchange able. . I could be very wrong, but it is important, a single track can run only one system. If I am wrong let me know and I will delete my text message. . Must ID each Power system, rail and engine and car and not confuse them if ordering.

the worlds most on time trains exist in japan, Amtrak has lots of delays except on the north east corridor, but delays still occur there.

my house has no ally but the Canadian national railway
BEAUTIFUL, I want this in Nscale

Thanks brother have to get one of these bad boys. what a butiful train!
The heartland flyer does the same thing with an engine on both ends
It was 35 mins late one time.
hi James... great review... thanks for sharing.. vinny
Thanks Vinny!

jlwii2000 does it have sound?
you should do the Walthers EMD GP9M - Standard DC HO Scale - Wisconsin & Southern #911 (red, gray)
look it up on amazon

whitch dcc control do you sugect for a biggener bised the bachmann one
Hi James, did trainworld get rid of the set? its no where to be found.
How did you get the automatic bell on your old layout
How big is the room you have for your layout and do you have just HO scale or you also have other scale trains.
Great video. Love my Acela but i am mad since I need one more business class car and no one has in. Ugh
its on the bachmann website shop.bachmanntrains.com
Hey bnsf6951 did you go to the Oregon railroad heritage museum a couple months ago?
Hi, you think a sound decoder can be added...???
It already includes one installed, hence DCC ready.
Thank you very much for this. At one of the local hobby shops I felt looked down upon for being a 'Noob'. I just want to get a set for my young boys for Christmas. I'm looking at the DCC Thunder Chief. Any thoughts on this. Again great job for we Noobs!
thank you now I know how to use it.
I just purchased mine but the "dummy" car shorts out my rails in DC. I am so disappointed. any idea why?
Loved it
do you know if there's away to convert the Bachmann dcc to the nce dcc plug for nce controllers. I don't want to use Bachmann's controller
idk
ok have to see if someone else knows
DCC is a standardized system (international standard even as far as I know) so mixing components from different manufacturers is generally no problem.
Would you possibly do a wealthers proto 2000 0-6-0? I an considering to get a bigger 0-6-0 cause my bacmann 0-6-0,s are great. But are struggling with newer and bigger rolling stock. I think there really cool. Plus they make them in many road names. I think even a Union Pacific. Well was just wondering. Let me know if you can. Love the interview,s. I really mean that.
Very nice review thanks for putting it up on the net
Really great review.. Not a beginner, but great anyway..
This would work out great if you have a point to point layout or a trolley track to run it on. I second the wish it was in N scale.

Acela has 8 cars. 2 power cars, and 6 assorted passenger cars.
$ 249.99 for the HO set, $ 299.99 for the N scale set. still a good deal for someone starting in ether scale.
I am just staring to learn about DCC vs. HO Trains.
DCC is run on 15 volts AC
.
HO Train is run on DC and has a second voltage for accessories which is 17 volts AC.
.
Both each HO and DCC each have different styles rail. I do not believe they are interchangeable track styles..
.
.
Legacy uses 1/2 sign wave for positive ---- outer rail
and the other 1/2 sign wave for negative ---- inner rail
center rail for neutral.
Bill Rundell HO is a scale DCC is NOT a scale HO scale runs on DCC and/or DC
Ho scale is the best right
