As an older kid, I realized so much of the real parents' neglectful behaviors are them being so tired and overworked from the move and working at the same time. Coraline began to realize while her folks might be that way for a while, the Other Mother is bad...pretty much FOREVER.
They still shouldn't be mean and neglectful to her. She's not the source of the anger or frustrations, she's just a child.
@@bethanychatman9531 it is impossible to be a perfect parent. After the move, they just don’t have the time to spend their tired working hours with her. They do take care for her and show her love. You may see it as neglect, parents being preoccupied and all, but she isn’t neglected, she is cared for. The parents are just how most people would be in their situation. As an outsider, it is easy to say, “they shouldn’t have directed their frustrations at their daughter” when this reaction from being overworked and tired is sadly quite normal. It is harder to think in the moment when you’re exhausted mentally and physically. However, I agree that they shouldn’t have directed their frustration at their child. But again, this doesn’t make them bad parents, this makes them flawed people; like everyone else.

@@jackg.1683 They weren’t being neglectful, they were just tired and emotionally drained. Even though they could have had better actions, doesn’t mean their actions made them bad parents. And yes, bad parents are flawed people, but so are good parents. Literally everyone is a flawed person. As someone who had been neglected, what Coraline experiences is not neglect. As I said previously, she is cared for, her parents are just busy. It may FEEL neglectful from a child’s perspective, aka Coraline, but from a parent’s perspective, it’s understandable.

Eyes are windows of ones soul. So if the Other Mother can remove them and replace them with buttons, the victims would be stripped of their identity. Easier for her to lock their souls. The unsettling feeling behind the usage of dolls is that in my opinion, no matter how realistic they are theyre still be devoid of life. No soul. Thats what the buttons represent. Or something like that i think. Remember the ghost boy said, they dont remember thier names, but just the memory of his true mommy.
The buttons are also the "other eyes" - the artificial ones. Instead of letting you see the world as it is, they only let you see the world you want it to see, basically locking you in inside of your own fantasy world, where the "other mom" can control you. You see all those wonders, but in reality, they make you blind. Remember how the "other mother" said: "Soon you will see things _our_ way"?
The ghost boy cannot remember his name because of how long they are trapped in there and as time passes their memories breaks and slowly forgets their loved ones and even their name.
It's such a dark concept 😭
I like how as Coraline gets into the other world, her expectations of her parents change. Her dad makes up a song for her at the dinner table, which would be the attention she wanted, but she’s only focused on how the food is better in the other world. Parents do need to remember not to direct their frustration at their children who are lonely or looking for something to do. Take a break from your task, see that your child has something to keep them busy, but do not ever make them feel guilty about talking to you through emotionally harmful misdirection of your anger/aggravation/etc; or else they'll grow up afraid to talk to you about anything serious.

It hit me when you called it "hypnotic", that really is the perfect way to describe the entire movie, and something completely unique to this film. I've never outwardly realized it, but every time I've watched Coraline has been warping and disturbing but almost soothing and sleep-inducing at the same time

Coraline is so good, I remember being fascinated by it as a kid. Neil Gaiman never misses. Coraline, American Gods, Anansi Boys, the Sandman run... All bops.
Also good omens was a great Gaiman adaptation.

Here is a cool little fact for you. There were 24 different puppets of Coraline used in the making of the movie, each one took 10 individuals and 3-4 months to construct. It was a 55-week shoot and included 109,440 individually animated frames.There were at total of 207,336 possible face combinations for Coraline with all the pieces they had.
Also, the song that the other father sang to Coraline foreshadowed other mother wanting to put her button eyes on Coraline.

With John Linnell writing (with other They Might Be Giants member John Flansburg) and performing Other Father's song. Fun fact, TMBG were originally brought on to compose and record the entire soundtrack but were mostly cut from the project due to behind-the-scenes difficulties finding proper common ground on the desired tone of the score.

Also before the other Father's song, he says, "This piano plays me." Which could also be interrupted how he's being controlled by the other mother.
I think it’s more so that she made the other father from a pumpkin it seems like rather than turning him into a pumpkin monster

The Beldam made the other Father (and Wybie) to only love Coraline, that’s why they both help Coraline.
I always found it interesting that in the final shot when the camera zooms out of the garden party, the garden resembles the true face of the Other Mother, instead of Coraline’s. Nice creepy touch to the ending of the movie
I’ve watched a lot of reactions waiting on someone else to point that out but it’s rarely brought up! One of my favorite film endings because of that frame.
As a parent, I feel for Coralines' parents though, I have been overworked and stressed as a single parent.... but yeah it wouldn't hurt them to take a break or if they can't take a break, at least tell her when they can spend time with her (after dinner we will play a family game together, but right now we need to work). If they really can't afford more food or whatnot, I mean it sucks but not everyone can have a huge dinner like the other mother makes, doesn't mean they are terrible parents. I'm glad the parents finish their book and realize how overstressed they were & neglecting of their family time & had poor work-family balance.
very true; they’re obviously very stressed and trying to manage BUT they forget their kid doesn’t see bills or jobs or deadlines, they see a parent snapping at them and yelling.
that’s what i try to focus on if i’m stressed and i don’t want to take it out on my brother; he doesn’t understand why i’m stressed, only that i’m angry and it seems to be at him.
They say eyes are the window to the soul. I always thought the removing of the eyes and swapping them with buttons was symbolic of giving up your soul, in exchange for the surface level desires you think you want. Forsaking the things that truly matter.

"Its like an esophagus", you're not far off. In the book the tunnel is nothing like the movie and is described as cold, musty, and damp. As Coraline moves through the tunnel she can hear faint whispers and distant winds, as well as it feeling like something is keeping pace with her in the dark and it being described as "something very old and very slow". Towards the end of the book those winds seem to pick up, the tunnel appears to expand and grow in length and when Coraline places her hand on the wall it is covered in fur. Many have theorized that the tunnel itself is a monster, much older than the Beldam and that the tunnel she moves through is possibly part of its digestive system, either being the throat and esophagus, stomach or intestines. For any interested I suggest checking out "abitfrank" who has covered many topics on the Coraline lore.

Saw this movie in 3D in theaters. Holy shit it was wild. The tunnel looked so vivid and freaky, like a wormhole through space. Definitely the coolest 3D movie I've seen.
Agreed!, me and a mate had the whole cinema to ourselves for this in 3D!. This and DREDD were the best 3D films I've seen at the cinema.
Definitely one of my all time favorites. It strikes a perfect balance for a kids horror movie that is genuinely creepy but won’t scar a child. Loved it as a kid.

Trust me I was quite scarred. I didn't even know it until about a year later. I went into a friend's home and lalaloopsy was on the TV. I jumped once I had noticed and was quite spooked the entire time it was on.

At first I thought his voice was weird but over time and hearing it for a long while I got used to it.
I've always been told the buttons symbolize the fact that the other mother sees Coraline as a doll or a plaything, the making of the doll at the beginning of the movie is foreshadowing what the other mother is doing to the real coraline throughout the movie, moulding her into above mentioned perfect doll/plaything that she can then keep, final step being the eyes. (the ghost children were failed attempts that happened throughout the years) none the less... Fucked up 😂
This is like one of the best scariest stop motion films ever, glad you guys are reacting to this masterpiece that traumatized me as a child.

Interestingly, when I was a little kid, decades before this movie even came out, I had a dream (or should I said, some state between a dream and being awake, because I could get there seamlessly without falling asleep) about a similar door being located in a wall in my bedroom. High above the head of my bed, there was a square opening in the wall, with a little door, and a warm yellow light coming out of it. And there was a little man sitting in it, with a fishing rod, and a mushroom attached to the end of its string. I climbed up there to talk with him, and he said that he's fishing for some snake-like monsters who apparently love those mushrooms. I know what monsters he's been talking about, because I've been seeing them quite a lot during my childhood, in those half-dream-half-awake states: they looked like snakes, or like a trunk of an elephant but without the elephant, and they were flying above me in my bedroom. I was always scared of them, but no one could seem them besides me. My parents were telling me that they're "just a dream", or that I'm "seeing things" :q I couldn't get rid of them, I couldn't grasp them because they were like ghosts, and when I was using my imaginary hands to catch them, or that I'm slicing them with an imaginary sword, they were reattaching again. But that one night, when that little man told me that they love those mushrooms, I decided to try a different angle: I looked around and found those mushrooms growing in my bedroom behind furniture and under my bed, so I gathered them and made a dinner. I called the monsters, they came in, ate the mushrooms and looked very delighted. They made a gesture inviting me into one of those little doors open in my bedroom's walls, always with that warm yellow light coming out of them. So I came in, and there was a table made out of a tree trunk, with lots of mushrooms on plates put on it. They were all feasting on them. It was located in a cavern, all covered with that warm yellow light that was coming out of nowhere and everywhere at the same time. I couldn't hear what the monsters say, but somehow I understood what they're talking now. They said that they didn't want to scare me, they were just looking for those mushrooms in my bedroom. But since I befriended them, they promised to not bother me anymore. I came out of the door, back into my bedroom, and the door closed behind me. And, as they promised, they never bothered me again, to this day. I still wonder whether it was just a dream of a child, or if I really could see some other-worldly creatures in my bedroom :q
Jennifer Saunders is the voice of the Fairy Godmother from Shrek 2 who did the legendary cover of Holding Out for a Hero! Fun fact, it took only four days for her to record her part. When it comes to music in this movie, originally They Might Be Giants was supposed to do the soundtrack but due to creative differences, only one song they did made it in...the Other Father's song on the piano. Which the Other Father's singing voice is John Linnell from the band!

I wouldn’t say Coraline’s parents are “abusive” or are “domestically violent” (at least her REAL parents). They could’ve paid more attention to her, and they were a bit negligent (not abusive), but they clearly do care about her and try to cheer her up a couple times, but with the recent move and the constant work required by their garden catalogue, they’re just super busy. Coraline is still just a child, and one who is clearly attention-seeking as many kids are, and I think Coraline’s feelings (while valid) are exaggerating the severity of her parents’ being busy into something more sinister. Idk, maybe it’s just me.
It's true that her parents aren't neglectfu. i think her parents are, unfortunately, workaholics. Not by choice though. At most i think that when coraline said thats what yoy always say. Her mom probably does say i promise I'll make it it up alot but doesn't follow through
The parents were not intentially neglectful. They were drowning in debt and only finishing and selling the catalog saved them. They could only afford to tip the moves $1. They could not afford the $25 gloves. They had an empty refirgerator. The dinners were barely edible. The point of the story is that Coraline changed. She became less narcissitic and mean to the others around her. Her neighbors and parents did not change, she developed empathy and changed.
I think her mother changed just not big only a little
Coraline is easily a top 5 animated film for me (maybe even top 3). It has such a uniquely dark tone and more emotionally complex ideas than most animated movies feel like they can deal with (including making their main character imperfect and potentially a bit unlikable at first before she grows). It's a yearly re-watch for me!

Coraline is one of my all-time favorite "scary" kids movies. I remember back in '09 when it first came out and I was lucky enough to get the double-sided disk with the 3D glasses inside. Lord knows I watched this in 3D with the lights off and had nightmares for days. Still a fun movie to rewatch over and over, though.
Henry Selick is a legend in stop motion animation. He often collaborates with Tim Burton. This is my all-time favorite stop motion animated movie.

I actually watched it in theaters in 3D and it was amazing in 3D. The opening sequence when the other mother is stitching Coraline together, it was gorgeous, still remember. Solid reaction, amazing movie.
Damn I can't believe you've never watched this video before! Coraline is ICONIC!! The book is even more creepy actually. The other world never even feels as comforting and it's very uncanny yet intriguing from the start. The tunnel also isn't described as a colorful gateway. Alsooooo Wybe does NOT exist either! Coraline is completely alone throughout the entire story.
Yeah, somehow both the book and the movie are both really good, which I feel like usually doesn't happen. I agree that the book is creepier, but I like the direction the movie took with some scenes that would be hard to capture. Like how in the book when Coraline realizes how weird looking the other mother was the entire time and couldn't believe she ever thought that the beldam and her real mother ever looked alike. I feel like that would be a pretty hard feeling to capture, so having her morph into a creepier version of herself was a smart substitute. Also enjoy Wybie's presence in the movie. He's a pretty good character.

Saw this in theaters in 3D, one of the best film experiences I've ever had. This remains one of my all time favorites. The music is just so haunting and beautiful.
For many Millennials and GenZ this was like a modern day Pinocchio, it CAN be scary the same way Pinocchio can be. But more so the world and story itself is more so a colorfully twisted tale to children to teach them of certain dangers.
Eyes are the windows to the soul. Replacing her eyes with buttons will separate the soul and essentially turn Coraline into a plaything (doll) for mother.
Dad probably looks familiar because the scene in 5:45 became a common meme of being dead in the eyes while at work

Two of my fav channels collaborating for one of my all-time fav movies. I love in the beginning “I heard this was dark… it’s not so dark”. Then by the end “OMG!” Lol.
This beautiful film was my sons favourite when they were kids. My youngest was 5 and my eldest was 9 and we had to watch it almost every day. They were totally obsessed.
I think it walks a fantastic line between creepy but not terrifying which kids love. Plus the animation is incredible.
Interesting thing to note is that Wybie doesn't actually exist in the original book, the one this movie is based on. Other interesting things to note are:
8:43 In the original book, the tunnel to the Other World is actually alive, and is in-fact part of a much larger lifeform. The tunnel that we see is actually the creature's throat pipe, and the Other World is the creature's stomach. The Other Mother is similar to a tape worm or some other parasitic life form.
40:09 The inside of the well is identical to how the tunnel to the Other World looks when it's all dusty and gross. This implies that the Other Mother managed to get the key in the end.
40:57 (well technically it's later but it's the closest thing in this video) The garden in the Other World looks like Coraline when viewed from above. However, the garden in Coraline's world looks the Other Mother when viewed from above. This implies that there is a much closer connection between both worlds.
At 10:48 if you’re just fast enough you can see the foreshadowing of the lightening out the window that it’s the shape of the mothers hand in her spider form.
Also, I love the lore of this movie, even after all these years there’s still a common question of whether she actually won and made it out of the other world or not. Let me explain.
The cat is seen throughout the movie passing through portals only he can access in the other world such as the tree and sign-posts around the house, in the last scene of the film the cat is seen disappearing behind the sign-post but how would that be possible if she was not still stuck in the other world, it’s a great conspiracy and question, does it foreshadow she never left and she did indeed lose? Or was it just a nice random touch from the creators of the film? We will never know.

I love this movie! Watch it every year during Halloween time. Personally my favorite movie from Henry Selick.
This movie is also an amazing representation of dealing with a narcissistic parent. The other mother is only concerned with her own bottomless hunger and everything she offers has a horrible price attached.
One of my all-time favourites, the story is unique, and the animation is perfect, as much as it's creepy I find it very comforting for me idk why lol. Everyone should defo watch easter egg breakdowns on this movie to get the hidden messages. I've been saying they should do a live action of this movie for ages...hopefully they do one day
I was 12 when this came out and I didn't see it as creepy or sinister, i honestly saw it as another cute child adventure story.
I haven't read the book and but I am lead by the general fan to believe it's more direct with making it "creepy".
Either way, if I don't know what to watch Coraline is one of the movies I'll end up playing.
Coralline is an Absolute MASTERPIECE!! Not only is it a FULLY Stop Motion Flic, the Work and Determination that went into this movie, along with the Voice acting is TOP TIER!! Plus this movie is the Perfect Definition of a Kids/ADULT Movie!!

I love this movie! My mom was so creeped out, but I was just fascinated.
The movie that started my daughter's love for animation so much so that she received her degree in computer animation. Her dream is to work at Laika Studios, which did the animation for this movie.
There is common speculation that the well is actually another path into the other world, because of how Wybee said that it goes so deep that you can see a sky full of stars during the day, which some take to mean how it’s always night in the other world.
Great reaction. This came out while I was in high school. I read the book in Junior High and my parents let me check out of school to go watch this by myself at the theater. What a wild ride. I can't remember the book much but I've watched the movie a lot. I think that the buttons represent the other mother treating Coraline and the other children like dolls or play things. She doesnt love her/them but wants to play with them. That's all I can think of but I dunno

I love how this movie showed the worst versions of parenting: over-indulgence, neglect, and manipulation.
The movie originally came out with a 3D counterpart, so there are a lot of spots in the movies where you can tell that it was meant to be a 3D movie (A lot of shots in the first scene, the acrobatic scene, the spider web scene)

yeah i had a similar experience. watched it alone on christmas eve at age 7 and couldn't sleep without terrible "other mother sews buttons in my eyes" nightmares for like months. watched it again at 16, love it.

Legit one of my favourite movies. I'm not far in, just sitting and waiting for you to work out that it's actually a horror movie! Thanks for calling out the soundtrack, it's SO GOOD. Jennifer Saunders (along with her partner Dawn French) are a UK comedy duo, with part of the joke here being that their real-life body types are the opposite to how they are in the movie. You probably know Jennifer Saunders as the voice of the Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2 though! Also - the reason you recognized the Dad is because his anguished face is a meme!
Button eyes = blinding yourself to reality. She saw the other world as better because it distracted her from the real world and her problems. Though she ignored reality, her situation didn’t change. It actually got worse.
It's such a good movie, and it's interesting to re watch it, I think it's easier to see all the subtle signs of how stressed and overworked the parents are on a rewatch. Because the first run through you're just vibing and you're sort of in the trenches with Coraline, but watching it again you can pick up on things like: they just moved into a new place and are trying to get settled, they are clearly struggling financially, the mom has some sort of health issue involving her neck, maybe she's been in an accident, but she's probably in pain and cranky because of it, also they're probably dealing with paying off medical bills, etc. So the movie has caught this family in an awkward transitional moment, rather than the status quo. Coraline is vulnerable because she's feeling neglected, and she is being neglected, but I really don't think it's the norm, based on all the subtle evidence and her own behavior. The movie also teaches a valuable lesson which is that kids aren't going to understand (and shouldn't have to understand) all of the intricates of the adult world, you still need to make time for them, even if it's not as much time as usual. If a lot is happening in your life, you still have to pay attention to the children, even if you just implement small 15 minute play times or something. Because if they don't get the attention from you, they'll get it from someone else.
I saw this movie three times in theaters when it came out and the 3D experience was amazing.

Easily one of my favorite movies growing up. I also really loved the book. To be honest, I was never too scared of it for the most part. I was more "enraptured" if at makes any sense.
The eye thing is basically just "the eyes are thw windows to your soul" she steals your eyes, hence she steals your soul/life like the ghost kids said happened to them.

This is one of at least 2 Neil Gaiman stories that is somewhat similar to Alice In Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass with the other being Mirror Mask. Neil has been my favorite author since the first issue of The Sandman comic books. Give a read to The Graveyard Book, Anansi Boys, American Gods, and Good Omens (the last 2 have been made into tv series.) Neil is an amazing storyteller! Fun facts: Wybie does not exist in the book and was created so Coraline would be talking to someone not to herself., Coraline's Dad wears a Michigan State University shirt because it was the alma mater of one of the producers; the snow globe is of the main fountain within The Detroit Zoo, but they didn't actually make/sell snowglobes of it until AFTER the popularity of the movie (I had one but my late last gf broke it.) This movie gave me so many nightmares as a kid, rewatched it not too long ago and it rly does have a hypnotic quality to it. If ya'll are looking for more dark animated movies, give '9' a go, it was also produced by tim burton if im not mistaken. Haven't seen it since i was a kid so idk if it holds up but i remember loving it quite a bit!

Sorry I am late haha, but fun fact about the original book this is based off. Neil was writing this with adult audience in mind, but a friend would take the story home and read it to her young daughter, her daughter loved it and kept wanting more, she kept being read it. This lead Neil to target his dark story to kids.
Years later the kid said it terrified her but she wanted to hear how it ended lol.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Buttons symbolize covering the windows to the soul. It's a form of control that the other mother uses to seal the contract with the children whose life force she eats and whose souls she traps.
I think Guillermo Del Toro would be great to take this CORALINE into a live action! It would be so scary!

One reason this looks familiar is that you might have seen Henry Selick's other work, like the Nightmare Before Christmas or James and the Giant Peach.
If you would give this a second watch, the doll being reworked into Coraline in the beginning. That doll looked like one of the ghost children. The sister of Wyborne's grandmother to be precise. Which is the reason she doesn't rent out to families with children, because the loss of her sister. This time she might have overlooked it, possibly becasue of her old age.
Also another fun detail to think about is how old the Other Mother is. Since she captured the grandmother's sister when she was young, and the other children look and talks in a very old fashioned way. At least over 250-300 years old even older if her other victim's ghosts fade away.
I can't believe you have never watched Coraline! I always used to watch it when I was little during October, it's just so good!

But it always surprises me how there's movies that are older that you have not watched, only because of your background and what you do here on UA-cam and you're involvement with movies. I LOVE that you guys watched this movie. My daughter is nonverbal, but the first show she ever got attached to was (the first 40 minutes of) Coraline. I’ve seen the first half (before the Other Mother gets too scary) about 1,000 times. Maybe more, not exaggerating.
