The real insight I got from this video is at the very end. Ric altered the match, on the fly for the betterment of his opponent and the business in general. What a pro
Yep, at the time, fans like me had no idea that he was wrestling with such a traumatic injury. It's only years later that I started seeing that story on newsgroups, and people wondered was it just rumours. When it was confirmed as truth for all us fans, we were shocked. What an athlete to have been able to continue to perform at that level. One of the most tragic stories in wrestling history. As high school kids, we wished we could be like the Von Erichs. Such incredible highs, and unbelievable lows...
I didn’t know nor would I have cared Kerry was my favorite of all time. They tired yet never see the likes of the Von Erich’s again. You can say the same for the horsemen. Whooooooa
Man Dave and Kerry were awesome but when I was growing up though Kevin was my favorite, flying around like a crazy man in his bare feet doing stuff that you didn't really see in American wrestling at that time was awesome. All three of them were fantastic though and they each had their own styles, R.I.P to all the Von Erich sons, you live on in the hearts of fans and you're all missed ✝️
Same here. Kevin was always my favorite because he fought barefooted and did the acrobatic moves. E always seemed like the more reserved of the brothers as well. Mike and Chris seemed like puppies in a room full of wolves.
I was at a Thursday night football game in Minnesota at the metrodome in 1994-1995 and Ric was on the sidelines close to the seats. I ran down and leaned over the railing and yelled Mr. Flair can I shake your hand. He walked right up and put his hand out and I told him that he was my favorite wrestle ever which he is. He smiled and said thanks a lot pal. 100% pure class and the GOAT!! Love you Ric.
Great story, man. Ric Flair seems like a good guy in real life and I'm glad you got the chance to meet him. I'm 32 soon to be 33 years old and I saw The Iron Claw the other day and loved it so I've been on a wrestling history binge these past couple of days. To my shame I had no idea about the Von Erich family or their story going into the film, but the fact that Ric Flair features in it had me hyped (whoever plays him in the film portrayed him excellently, by the way). I grew up in the late 90's/early 2000's watching the likes of Hulk Hogan, Goldberg, Sting, Kevin Nash, Kane, The Undertaker, Booker T and the legendary Ric Flair....Woooooo! 😂 Also, please check out The Wrestler and Foxcatcher as well. All fantastic wrestling films.
Flair knew when he could change the ending, at that time the the fans would have gone nuts over the new Von Erich showing how good he is, just like his brothers.
I saw a match on television, Flair vs. Kevin from Reunion Arena or one of the other buildings that World Class used and Kevin reverse pressed Flair, got the three count and, for a minute, I thought I saw the NWA World Title change hands, which was rare to see on television and then they reversed the decision based on a technicality, and that got me hooked. I tuned to WCCW every week for five years.
One thing that is great about Flair is that his character is pure ego but the man behind the character was willing to sacrifice victory not simply for the sake of a good match but also to give a crowd the result they wanted on a whim.
2ND Ric flair please read this Your a very very good man who is the best wwe hall of fame of all time and your experience made me want to become a wrestler and Adopt the name jake Flair WOOOOOOOOOO
I never knew that Kerry had lost his foot until after he died, but I did notice a difference in the way he moved in the ring after his accident. I never guessed that he had lost his foot, but I thought that he walked and moved differently because of the motorcycle accident. I think I thought that it had something to do with his ankle. (It was 30+ years ago and I was a teen so I don't remember exactly what I thought was different, but I know that I didn't guess that he had a prosthetic foot.)
Kerry “the Texas tornado” von Erich was that dude with or W out a boot. Not only did he have to e ability in the ring, he had that cool calm laid back demeanor.
Or, they could have had a cruiserweight division to let him shine. Uswa would have been trendsetters in the United States at that time with a cruiserweight division.
For those of us who saw and witnessed Carry Von Erick in that Dallas saw a man in trouble yrs before he took his own life. The alcohol and drugs were a big part of the Von Ericks wrestling life, and Carry had a huge problem with both and it had taken over everything he was and did in his life. His arrogant attitude and life style was one of just go fast and live faster which ultimately led to his suicide. I watched the Von Erick family all my life and the Father was the driving force and he watch 4 of his boys die 1 by Heartache and 3 by suicide and it was sad to watch
Just watched the match again and perhaps Flair’s memory is fading because he didn’t fight off the claw at the end but Mike had him in a sleeper hold til the time ran out.
Being NWA members, Crockett and Fritz should have had Pay per Views with the Von Erichs vs. Crockett's heels. Especially since Kerry and Flair had such a big interest in their feud. It could have elevated both promotions and kept the cartoon king at bay a little longer. Crockett's roster was so big that they could have had several main event caliber matches on a single PPV.
Such a shame World Class dropped it NWA affiliation. Kerry could have been brought in to Atlanta to join forces with Dusty Rhodes to fight the the horsemen
After 1986 lots of wrestling territories were either shutting down or disbanding from the NWA, as basically the Jim Crockett promotion was the only NWA promotion that was fighting Vince's WWF national expansion. Also Fritz's bad decisions, such as making fans believe that Lance Von Erich was part of the family when lots of WCCW fans knew that he really wasn't a real Von Erich, and Fritz's heart attack angle, took a really bad toll on the promotion.
Mark Madden with all the questions you could ask Ric you asked the same absolute stupid question that everybody knows already this is the best you could do 3:49
What? Kevin and Kerry had nearly identical physiques. Kerry had a larger frame with a bit more bulk so he was obviously larger in size but to say they look nothing alike is not correct.
Mike (before the toxic shock syndrome incident) always seemed relatively capable, but from what I've read, his heart wasn't really in it. Chris on the other hand (again from what I've read) was all heart, but lacked the size, ability, and the physical health to be in the ring.
Kevin was stiff on purpose to make it as real as possible, and every other wrestler who mentions him says he expected stiff back. And anyone who pulls out a bad tooth with a pair of pliers himself... That's tough.
Ric weren't you supposed to talk about everything that happened of the Plane Ride from Hell. You know not that many people like you. Addressing the issue would clarify things, yet I have not heard you touch the subject at all. Why haven't you gone back with Renee to tell "the truth"
This podcast is so sad. Love Flair but jeez, he doesn't have anything interesting to add or any good takes I'm dying to hear like other good wrestling podcasts. Not to mention the unbearable Mark Madden hosting.
I don't think Ric wants to smear anybody, but instead relate good memories of his time as an active wrestler. I do wish Mark used more of a conversational voice.
kevin looks just like his brother kerry in the thumbnail, incredible!
The resemblance is uncanny
I was just going to say...that's Kerry in the thumbnail
Flair wishes he had half of what Kevin, Kerry or David had.
Kevin and Kerry were twins? Why am only seeing this now?
That's cuz it is him....not his brother.
The real insight I got from this video is at the very end. Ric altered the match, on the fly for the betterment of his opponent and the business in general. What a pro
I think this is the secret to all Rick's success: Everybody wanted to work with him.
Absolutely! Flair was the man!!!!
That’s what made him so great as a performer

Hogan wrestled with a broken back, neck, collarbone and dislocated shoulder

I thought Matt Riddle would be the next Kevin. He still could be.

Was that against the Bears by chance? I remember that game I think lol
He should have withdrawn his hands and smooth this hair.
Woooooooooo!!

Ric...a very generous and fair interview here
When I grew up, Kerry was the Texas Tornado. I had no idea at the time he had no foot
Me too, dude . Never knew, and he was one of my favorite
@@franco4201 yeah I used to like his entrance music
Kerry was my favorite and the best von Eric!! Truly a legend of Pro wrestling always and forever 🤼🤼🤼🤼

Great, but why talk about Kevin Von Erich, but show a picture of Kerry?
I was confused.

Same. I thought he just had more rehabing stuff because of accident and maybe he wouldn't be 100% again but never guessed he lost a foot.
Loved The Iron Claw
I was a fan back then. Me and my friends had no idea his leg was amputated. And Flair used to do hour long matches. He was an animal.

God damn pal, Kevin looking ripped
In my opinion 1979 - 1999 was the golden era of wrestling.

The best matchup in wrestling RF& KV
Styling and Profiling!!
I think Mike could have worked the midcard pretty well. Chris had no business being in the ring as a wrestler, they should have made him a manager.
Or, they could have had a cruiserweight division to let him shine. Uswa would have been trendsetters in the United States at that time with a cruiserweight division.
Its so nice people have just forgotten ric flair forcing a sky waitress to give him a frenchmans handshake midflight
Picture is Kerry
Love flairs stories 🙌🙌
I could listen Flairs stories all day long...
Mark should listen to more shoot interviews; It’s common knowledge among fans now I think that Kevin was a crowbar
I’m sure the fear of the boot coming off during a match would cause massive stress.
Whoever does these thumbnails should be fired immediately
That is Kerry in the thumbnail, not Kevin. They made an error in their picture.

Does anyone understand that John Wesley Hardin thing?
John Wesley Hardin was an outlaw in the days of the old West
Love this!
good stories
The Iron Claw
Why on the thumbnail do you show Kerry?
Kerry out drinking Piper is fucking wild
Why is the cover a pic of Kerry Von Erich if this is about Kevin?
Such a shame World Class dropped it NWA affiliation. Kerry could have been brought in to Atlanta to join forces with Dusty Rhodes to fight the the horsemen

Rick was very sharp here
Can we talk about about the drunk flop? Where did he get the idea. How did it evolve. How many did he think he did?
My thoughts, just to expand his character. It got that pop, but it was more about a comedic moment.
I guess I'm not understanding how Kerry could hang with Roddy. Like in what exactly? Wasn't very clear. I'm also stupid tired maybe that's it.
Kevin was my favorite. He took zero shit in the ring.
Kevin was my favorite Von Eric
Video about Kevin, Pic of Kerry.

Fort worth I think it was the will Rogers coliseum
Madden is doing it and he loves the genre so I can’t agree with some of the criticisms of him. Madden is doing it!
Was it smoky mountain wrestling?
Producer want to either raise maddens headset volume, or raise his mic? No reason for him to yell everything.
So why did he put a picture of Kerry?
Kevin looks nothing like his muscular brother, Kerry.
Kevin is skinny compared to the former Texas Tornado.
What? Kevin and Kerry had nearly identical physiques. Kerry had a larger frame with a bit more bulk so he was obviously larger in size but to say they look nothing alike is not correct.
Kevin had a Natural looking Swimmers build that appeared to be steroid free! Strong, just Natural build!💪
@@Eddie-61864doubt he was natural
The video title doesn't match the pic😂
That’s Kerry not Kevin in that pic
what a horrible interviewer not even laughing with Rick just trying to juice out answers like cmon man
So mistake on the thumbnail there. Your talking about Kevin but are showing Kerry
Get it together, ya drunk! Thats Kerry. Not Kevin in the thumbnail.
That’s Kerry, c’mon Ric!
Mark, let him talk !

What was Flair talking about regarding the airplane? It wasn’t booze…
Put Kevin in your thumbnail
Yeah
Remember the great Lance Von Erich,,,lol ..

I thought Kevin was the best. David didn’t have the look. Kerry was too messed up physically and mentally.
David was only 25 when he died. It looked like he would have a great future.
Mark Madden lol you ask lame questions

The reason why kerry could drink like that was because he had a hollow leg.
