I don't understand why this is still an issue. This has been going on for decades! I know because first time I heard about it I was in primary school and I'm on my 40s now. Why haven't the check making companies implemented a security feature such as printing "invalid" or "do not receive" on the paper the check are printed on but only appear if a solvent solution is applied to the paper? They already do something like it when/if the check is photocopied and text appears on the copy, I'm pretty sure it's not that hard to have special ink made visible when a solvent (acetone, IPA, thinner) is introduced. Why is this still an issue TODAY?
I work fraud cases at a bank, the answer to your question is partially in your question actually, checks are very old school. This new wave of check fraud really only started back up in the last couple of years. Even to this day check usage has been on the decline, with the push for digital banking banks are reducing staffing in these areas. But much more importantly, alot of the old timers who have the knowledge are retiring. And it's not as easy as just slap on new ways of detecting fraud, everyone goes about it in different ways and there would still be a massive amount of older checks out there without those features in place. And it wouldn't be a number to scoff at either, customers at my bank will order a book of checks and wouldn't have to reorder for over 3 years. I've even ran across checks so old it still had customers social security numbers on it cause apparently some banks used to do that back in the day 🙃. It's just not feasible and it's happening too fast unfortunately, really comes down to the tellers and the depts that handle processing checks but at this point there has been decades of experience being lost. Especially on teller side it's a whole new generation that just are finding out about these types of scams only now.
I used to have automatic overdraft protection (savings account tied to my checking account) before this happened to me. I cancelled that. Plus now I only have what I need in my checking account to cover my bills...
This practice has been around for over 10 years. At one time, there was at least one writing instrument on the market that couldn't be washed. I don't know if it is still available. I hope that 1) the perpetrator has been found and arrested, and 2) that it will count as wire fraud and a felony that carries the max sentence and not just a slap on the wrist.
We don't have Cheque books anymore here in New Zealand , and gone online or thru other means like Credit/Debit cards. I feel for my friends in the US not being able to use the a system like the Online Eftpos system here in Australia and New Zealand to pay bills.
How do they cash the check? You can't just walk into a bank anymore and cash a check unless you have an account and you need a valid ID to open an account in the US. What am I missing here?
i see people commenting they never write checks, I have had multiple instances in recent years where I NO choice but to send a check in the mail. And once you do there is NO way you can prevent it being stolen (there inside theives that work for the post office, some postal workers will rent out their key to the mail boxes to thieves). The only way you prevent check washing I know of is to use a Uniball 207 Pen, with that ink, even if your check is stolen it, the ink cannot be washed off. So worst case scenario is they will just throw the check out.I do not know why this method is NOT promoted more by the media. I have come across videos that are over 10 years old where they recommend using a pen brand Uniball Pen Model 207.
Use a sharpie pen to write the check. The ink soaks throughout the fiber of the paper. And there is no problem placing a check in a person's mailbox so long as it is in the morning and picked up that day. Not all of us can get to a post office. But never put it in the night before or on a Sunday or holiday when there is no mail pickup. This isn’t new. It’s been going on for decades. Use a GEL pen as the ink will bind with the paper fibers of the check. Always drop your check inside the post office. Better yet, use your banking App to electronically pay your bills.
Also have ur bank mail the check where ur bank electronically types the check so that way if the check gets stolen, electronically typed checks are far more different to wash & alter compared to written checks w a pen.
