I'm glad I stumbled across your 2500 videos. I have a old 2500 with a 5.7 hemi. Was looking at upgrading to a 2500 with Commins but I now think the 6.4 hemi will do what I need without the headaches a diesel would bring with it.
As a Maritimer, it always surprises me to see Ontarians moving to the Maritimes. Many of us moved out west and never looked back. I left home in my early 20's, moved to Ontario and Quebec, then to Saskatchewan, Alberta, and finally, BC. Best of luck in New Brunswick, hope you enjoy it! Lots of great scenery out there and some decent hiking, too!
I towed 9,500 pounds with my PW and almost no difference in fuel mileage. I did not pull in wind or hills but I thought it was awesome that it did so well with a heavy load. When I towed 7,500 pounds with a F150 6.2L it did not do as nice and you could feel it where the PW acted like it wasn’t even there. I was shocked how well it did.
Im still not understanding how the fuel economy is so similar to when empty lol and yes the power wagons although not really meant to tow, actually tow very nicely. Its night and day compared to my old ram 1500.
(12:10) Now running over 110 kmh with a ¾ ton and pulling over 9,000 lbs. and getting 21L/100km. That is dam good ! I'll take the "Powerwagon" ! Geez I love that name. Let's say it again......"Powerwagon" ! now that is sweet. My 2021 4X4 Ram Classic crew cab 5.7 Hemi gets on average 12 L/100 km. When hauling my small travel trailer (under 5,000 lbs.) I get ±17 L/100km. Let's just say we are not driving a Prius ! Keep up the good work. Love your videos.
The PW can definitely tow better than many people realize. And as you said, it’s not a vehicle designed for high speed towing on the highway, but it does a respectable job. To me, where the towing aspect really shines is when you have to pull that weight you had off road or cross country. As I rancher, I never have to worry about getting hay or supplies 3 to 4 miles up a steep mountain road in summer or winter. I could do it with a tractor, but I wouldn’t be in that incredible interior, and the tractor rides a little rough.
Took ownership of my new PW yesterday. I bought specifically for pulling my 6,000to 7,000 lbs boat. The boat pushes a 1500 around. Reason I bought a 2500. Power Wagon, why not!
Your new PW will make easy work of that boat. I had a similar experience, my old ram 1500 when towing 5,200lbs just felt uncomfortable. The truck like you said was getting pushed around. When I tow with my PW its just so much more planted. It makes it easy.
lots of great scenery there, for sure. I spent a season fishing lobster in New Brunswick. When I lived in Ottawa, I would often drive home to PEI to visit my parents. The only interesting part of the drive was the portions through Northern New Brunswick. I moved out west years ago, and never looked back. Can't beat the scenery in Northern BC and the Yukon.
I have a 22 Power Wagon, we tow our Grand Design 297RSTS with a weight 8400lbs dry hooked up with a Hensly hitch. I could be happier with the truck's performance. It rode like the truck was on rails as we went Into PA. For a camping trip. We were getting 10.5 mpg for our 3 hour trip.
It seems people like to compare the towing of the power wagons to a ram 1500 but its night and day. These trucks although not rated for that much weight tow very well!
Welcome to New Brunswick!! I haven't gotten my PW out all that much either yet. Only got it about 5 weeks ago but as we go into the fall if we get any adventures booked I'll let you know.
2015 2500 6.4 from so cal to tn 20ft cargo 7,000 lbs through az and nm passes 70 miles an hr 8 miles to the gallon flat highway miles 2 miles to the gallon up grades .... absolutely no problems kept it at 1,500 rpms most of the time hit in mid 3's up hills ... have 100 pound air bags filled to 60 pounds each ... really did well , proud of it for a gasser
Just went from Marathon down to Sarnia and back. Easy 2500km haul. Ol Pig passes everything but a pump hahha! No issues. Hauled 33’ RV, Generator, Wood, all the goodies in the box. 11/12k lbs in trailer. Pulls nice with a nice hitch setup. 🤙🏼 rolling on 35/20/12.5
✌️Greetings from Miramichi, New Brunswick & big welcome to our beautiful part of Canada(maritimes)👍I am a Ford(truck) man usually & am on my 3rd F150, currently running a 6” lifted 2018 Fx4 on 37s with 5.0L coyote V8 + 10 speed transmission. With the above stated, I am loving your videos especially on the dodge trucks which is making me open my mind a little to possibly looking into a power wagon for my next truck in the coming years, best of luck & welcome to NB🍺
These power wagons are severely underrated they are capable of much more than factory recommends with slight modifications to rear suspension… it just won’t be legal 😂
Thanks Alex, appreciate the info. I will be looking for a travel trailer in the near future and this has confirmed the weight limits I had suspected for uphill/downhill traveling.
If you stay within the power wagons max towing you'll have zero issues. These trucks should probably be rated to pull much more but i guess they deem the extra height and sway bars a potential safety/handling issue under load
We picked up a 2022 PW level3 in July, we took our 26’ 4700 lb dry (figure 5700-6000lbs loaded) travel trailer to British Columbia 3 weeks later. We camp someplace literally every weekend April to October. It did/does absolutely awesome coming back we drove straight through 11hrs PW didn’t blink. This past weekend we were up some pretty rough and steep logging roads and I felt completely in control with power to spare every step of the way, I’ll average low to mid 20s (L/100km) which I’m ecstatic about. I had a 2014 Nissan Titan pro-4x prior to the PW and the same trailer was always at least 30L/100km. Sure the payload might not be 3/4 ton level but I agree with Alex this truck is underrated.
Hey Alex, I know your a diesel mechanic and very smart. I'm really interested in seeing if these parts would make an mpg difference on your PW!! If you install a Venomaire intake, plasma plugs, exhaust, engine tune and trans tune, would it help? Awesome video man!! 10 mpg isnt bad but it's not good tho
It might help. hard to say. at the end of the day these are big heavy trucks with a large V8 engine in it. for how much those parts would probably cost vs how much actual fuel savings you'll get who knows if its worth it. and once you throw an engine tune on you can kiss your warranty goodbye.
Thanks!! I'm considering a Power Wagon with 6.4 L Hemi for a 20-24 ft travel trailer. I don't think the trailer will go over 5000 lbs or so. My girlfriend loves the Toyota Tundra with 5.7L, but I was torn between Diesel and hemi. After watching this, I think the 6.4 L hemi makes more sense since mostly will be around town and I think even after retirement, we'll not go too heavy on the trailer, so should be okay?
how did it do going down hills? I just rented a Ram 2500 diesel to tow a travel travel and the exhaust braking was awesome. did you find that you had to use the brakes a lot? would've a weight distribution hitch help with the back end sag? great video as always. thank you!
Going downhill was actually not bad at all. during a couple steep sections I had to apply brake but the truck used its gearing very well. having 4.10 gears really helps soak up road speed. terrible for fuel economy lol. If I had more weight, like closer to 15-17k lbs then I'm sure I would of had to really be on the brakes but with only 9,100 lbs the truck seem to be very comfortable. A weight distributing hitch would of helped the sag most likely. But for me 3 inches was fine and with the class 5 hitch you can 1000 lbs of tongue weight which is very nice.
Great vid Alex! Good luck in your new digs! Thanks for sharing your engine temps and mpg's while towing, interesting stuff. Your truck didn't appear to show hardly any sag while moving down the 401/20, how much room did you have between the bump stop and axle?
Thank you! I saw that actually, the clips didn't seem to show the truck sagging as much. and to be honest the truck handled just fine. i thought the front end might feel light but it was planted. And I didn't check! I know when I loaded the PW up with like 2500lbs it still wasnt on the bump stops. if I remember correctly like 1000 lbs dropped it 3 inches and I still had a good 2.5 inches of suspension travel.
Bro, I'm late to the party, what do you think of the manufacturer recommended oil weight for that engine? I went away from it awhile back and started using 5w-30, which is what the engine tested with prior to the 2014 introduction.
Hey Alex, ive got the 2022 Ram 2500 6.4 Tradesmen. Payloads 3300. Im getting a new trailer thats 7800lbs. Dry with 900lbs on the tongue. Im wanting to haul it without a wdh. Looking at a b&w hitch, 7 inch drop, 14000 lb rating with 1400 tongue. Ive leveled my truck and put on 285/75/18, 10 ply. Would appreciate your thoughts, thank you!
Great vid. One has to ask why you would go with Premium gas? I have a 2020 Ram 2500 Limited MegaCab with the 6.4 Hemi and 4.10 rear end. Recommend octane is 89. And as we know octane is nothing more than the measurement of when will the gasoline will explode (i.e what temp and pressure). So as long as you are not experiencing engine knock, why would you go with a higher octane than what you need? There is no benefit. Please explain.
Don’t believe what you read on the net I have years of experience running trucks with gas motors regular gas sucks trucks run better on premium get better mileage and pull better but keep on reading the lefty’s bs
@@jimthefencer5212 Nothing to do with lefty's bs. My uncle is a retired mechanic. Worked on cars and also worked as a chief mechanic for white truck. I believe what he says.
There is no speed limit for towing. the speed limit in New Brunswick is 110km/h so going 7km over the speed limit wouldn't raise an eyebrow. Some provinces have speed limits on semi truck at 105km/h.
105 for semi trucks only in some provinces? All of Europe the speed limit for semi trucks and heavier loads is 90 km/h. Interesting difference. I wonder if there's any other reason than safety in mind. And maybe less wear on the roads.
@@GettysGarage you have to be towing over 10,000 lbs (technically) for the 105 km/h speed limit to take effect. But I've towed 15,000 lbs many times & passed many cops who don't even bat a eyelash so
Hey Alex, just wanted to throw my two cents out there and ask you your thoughts. So do you really think that they are going to stop making ICE vehicles in 2035? In my opinion, I don't see it happening. I just think these manufactures are under a lot of pressure from government regulators, "environmental" groups to make these electric vehicles. But as you know a lot of manufactures are making these new engines (turbo, twin turbo) more efficient and stuff which make them look good to the governments. Which leads me to think that as long as the regulations don't get crazy, there will always be a place for ICE vehicles. Another thing that I find ridiculous is the goal of 50% EV sales by 2030 that the Biden Admin (I'm in the US) set out, that's a far reach and quite a ridiculous goal. The market is NOT demanding 50% (I would argue the market isn't even demanding 25%) by 2030 that would mean a whole lot of people would have to have a epiphany and get EV's. Maybe in certain areas in the country it might reach that target but not nowhere near that nationwide. There's a good portion of the country in my mind that will not buy into the EV. I just think hell would freeze over before they get rid of ICE vehicles. EDIT: Don't want to get political but heres a Fox News video talking about EV's,power grid, the mining of materials for EV's,etc. ua-cam.com/video/OIcwgiCi4WE/v-deo.html
What are your thoughts on the lifter issues with the 6.4? I have a 2015 Ram 3500 diesel and i'm looking at going to either an F250 7.3 or Ram 2500 or PW 6.4. I tow a 5000 lb'ish Jeep on a 3500lb trailer. I'm done with the diesel expenses, egr issues, dpf issues, etc, but worry about issues with the 6.4 hemi. Is it because people aren't using the right oil or not keeping up on maintenance?
so the lifter issues on the hemi's are honestly more of a design flaw then a user error. I think the general conclusion is that at idle the stock oil pump does not supply sufficient oil pressure to the lifters. and so vehicles that idle a lot tend to have the lifter failure more frequently. having good oil can help but sometimes it just happens randomly. now I think the hemi tick is a little overrated but it is an issue. some people are installing higher pressure oil pumps to help the issue I think the 6.4 is a decent engine. But I have heard a lot of people talking about how they enjoy the 7.3 + the 10 speed trans in the ford f250s. but I know at least in Canada getting any ford superduty's right now is impossible. you'll probably have better luck finding a 6.4 hemi.
I have a 2021 PW and a 21’ bumper pull (7000lbs GVWR and 850lb tongue weight). I didn’t want to deal with air so I installed SumoSprings, part # SSR-312-47. I couldn’t be happier with them, zero maintenance and no change to unloaded ride quality. They decreased sag by 1” when compared to weight distribution hitch alone and stabilized the truck 1000%. Highly recommended.
I dont get why everyone trying to do a review on a Power Wagon starts with you know PWs have a low pay load cap. BS buy some airbags and your right back at full 2500 pay load. the only difference is the springs on the power wagon vs a standard 2500. there dual rate on the PW and are 2" over stock for more flex off road. everything else is regular 2500.
your vids alone is the reason i pulled the trigger on a powerwagon. bought a used 2021 and im so hyped. its on the way on a trailer now

Synthetic oil won’t even bat an eye at 300 degree (F) temps. The hottest the PW got is standard operating temp for many cars.
Agreed! I just thought I'd share my temps with everyone!
I think the general conclusion is that at idle the stock oil pump does not supply sufficient oil pressure to the lifters. and so vehicles that idle a lot tend to have the lifter failure more frequently. having good oil can help but sometimes it just happens randomly. now I think the hemi tick is a little overrated but it is an issue. some people are installing higher pressure oil pumps to help the issue
I think the 6.4 is a decent engine. But I have heard a lot of people talking about how they enjoy the 7.3 + the 10 speed trans in the ford f250s. but I know at least in Canada getting any ford superduty's right now is impossible. you'll probably have better luck finding a 6.4 hemi.
@@GettysGarage You pretty much have to order anything here. The dealers only have high end or low end if anything on the lot.
23-24 L/100km is an average long-term consumption of European 13L 500hp semi-trailer truck.
That's simply the progressive coil springs
I’m glad you are happy, but to me that’s pretty horrible MPG.A Cummins would hade averaged 15-16 and up..Very nice truck nonetheless.
I have 2022 and I have a 20ft trailer bumper pull. I’m thinking about Airbags! Any feedback or recommendations on Airbags?
I added Airlifts 5000, best couple 100 bucks ever
@@symorlinthecaster5882 did you get the compressor as well? Or not worth it?
I have a 2021 PW and a 21’ bumper pull (7000lbs GVWR and 850lb tongue weight). I didn’t want to deal with air so I installed SumoSprings, part # SSR-312-47. I couldn’t be happier with them, zero maintenance and no change to unloaded ride quality. They decreased sag by 1” when compared to weight distribution hitch alone and stabilized the truck 1000%. Highly recommended.
@@AndyLunatic no i just bought a cigarette lighter one and plugged into the 7 pin with a 7pin cigarette lighter combo
I honestly thought about going with timbren's or SumoSprings. Completely maintenance free. but air bags would give you the best ride height control.
What was your gas mileage?
Obviously didn’t watch the video.
It's not that they can't tow it, it's the legal aspects. It's 10k lbs allowance, minus truck weight equals your legal weight limit.
what's real estate prices like there?
I mean our place is a 3 bed, 2 bath bungalow on 1.5 acres. In Ontario this would be like 1.1M, here its less then a third of that.
Hmmm, moving from God's front porch to God's back porch. Congrats on the move
Thank you! we are excited.
Anytime you run 410 gears your milage will be crap. No more than what you had 3.73 gears would work
Wtf is this kilometer bs
He is in Canada, that’s what they use there, and in most of the rest of the world.
