  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "Nearly 94 million U.S. adults age 20 or older have total cholesterol levels higher than 200 mg/dL. Twenty-eight million adults in the United States have total cholesterol levels higher than 240 mg/dL." And yet, only about 12% of America’s calories come from plant-based foods. Food sources that are rich in phytochemicals and antioxidants that promote optimal health.
    But drugs can help, right? Do they? Statin medications like Lipitor and Crestor don't actually help.
    From how a Nutritarian Diet reverses high cholesterol to the dangers of Statin medications, here's Dr. Fuhrman.
    🌱
    Cholesterol is one type of lipid or fat in the body. It is synthesized predominately in the liver and used to make steroid hormones and is required for bile acid which aids in digestion and absorption of dietary fats. Cholesterol is also found in our diet, with a vast majority consumed from animal products. When animal products and processed foods rich in saturated and trans fats are consumed in excess amounts, high cholesterol, along with the inflammation produced from eating a low nutrient diet, will result in cholesterol plaques leading to cardiovascular disease. Thank you for continuing to share quality of life-improving and life-saving information with us!! Personal responsibility for our health does take effort. At 71 years now, I wish I would have done the work years ago as I can testify to the damage the drugs have done to me. Will still be giving the Nutritarian lifestyle my best and even at my age, I know better health will be mine! Thank you!!

      I started the nutritarian journey at age 70. Never too late. I'm on no drugs of any sort at age 75. 5'10" 158 pounds. No colds in the last 5 years. Fuhrman is preaching attainment of real health. I wish I had know this stuff earlier.

      I'm flattered by the reply! But in the Adventist Study 2, didn't pesco vegetarians have the lowest mortality rate (non vegetarians 1.00, lacto ovo vegetarians 0.91, vegans 0.85, pesco vegetarians 0.81)? I try to do a very low carb diet with 7-10 cups of vegetables, some eggs and dairy (not milk, I do love cheese, though), and some seafood, with time restricted eating, and a lot of elements of your nutritarian diet. I find it helps my diabetes a lot. Thanks again!

      @@jeffreyjohnson7359 Hi there, Jeffrey. I am Nicklas and I work as a public health counselor.
      Complex carbohydrates - like whole grains - are inversily correlated with diabetes; meaning more complex carbs = less diabetes. Many people think that because insuline is needed to drive down blood sugar, that carbohydrates are the cause of diabetes. But rural populations living off of quinoa, or oats, or rice, or tubers have very low rates of diabetes. The same goes with fruit and berries.
      "Intramyocellular lipids" is the mechanism that occurs when a diet is high in saturated fat, and this inhibits insuline sensitivity. Cutting down on saturated fats help the insuline to work better.
      A friend of mine - who has type 1 diabetes - drastically cut down on his insuline while at the same time eating more (complex) carbs.
      I would strongly advice you to take it easy on the saturated fats (as well as the processed/refined carbs). Cheese is super high in saturated fat, and it's not healthy for the body to eat, and especially not with regard to diabetes.
      Switching out some of the animal foods for beans, lentils or tofu would most certainly benefit your health, especially longterm.

      My diet has evolved a bit since I wrote that. I actually eat about 95% or more vegetarian. I almost never eat fish, although for moral not health reasons. I don't even eat much cheese any more, because I found out that some cheese isn't vegetarian. I eat eggs on occasion. As before, I eat almost no refined carbs. Because I'm calorie restricting, I've lost about 6 pounds, down to 180 at 5' 9.5". My LDL actually dropped down to 56. However, my A1c rose from 7.1 to 8.3. So I'm still struggling to slay the dragon, every day. I'm going to try to get down to my grad school and law school weight of 155 (over 30 years ago) to reduce my liver and pancreas fat, which Roy Taylor proved is the primary cause of diabetes.

    After five years of following this diet without the animal protein I found myself weak, frail, fatigued, and depressed. Added in 3-5 servings of lean meat a week and have seen amazing results. It’s very difficult reaching your protein needs if you stay active with sports, weight lifting, etc. The rhetoric in the plant based world seems to admonish protein, and many fail on the diet for that exact reason.

    • @smilebot484
      @smilebot484 Рік тому

      fuhrman permits animal products. if you can't get enough protein on a vegan diet you're doing something wrong. there are tons of vegan body builders. so this is a myth.

    • @timmyj2366
      @timmyj2366 Рік тому

      @@smilebot484 You’re dead wrong. Dr. Fuhrman does not permit protein powders and I try to eat whole foods only. All the body builders you speak of almost always eat 80-100g of protein powders per day.
      There are exceptions as some ppl may be able to more efficiently assimilate protein. But we don’t use outliers to make recommendations for the general masses.

      You might have a parasite problem, as they tend to exhaust your iron supply, and that is where your need for meat stems from. A similar problem was shared once by a doctor whose daughter always preferred a stake. Her mom tested her and a parasite was discovered. Once they got rid of the parasite, she turned into a happy vegetarian.

      John. Honestly if you believed your cardiologist you wouldn’t be here on a whole food plant based nutrition doctor’s UA-cam channel.
      And if you had a healthy diet up until now you wouldn’t be seeing a cardiologist in the first place! It’s not like you avoided eggs your whole life until now. You know they’re unhealthy. But true it’s not the cholesterol in the eggs it’s the saturated fat and the estrogen in the eggs.
