Low-Carb Diet Means High Risk of Heart Attack | Dr. Neal Barnard Live Q&A

  • A low-carb diet can roughly double your risk of having a major cardiovascular event, including a heart attack!

Dr. Neal Barnard discusses a major study showing the unquestionably unhealthy effects of eating what many believe to be a healthy diet. He joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to demonstrate how a low-carb high-fat diet such as the “keto diet” can create the perfect environment for everything from higher LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) to strokes and arterial disease.

What’s being left off the plate is exactly what your heart needs to pump efficiently! You will learn what the foods are and how they have maximum benefit for your heart!

I'm doing healthy Keto and lowered my carbs but I'm talking about refined carbs. I'm eating cruciferous vegetables, protein and moderate fat. I've never felt better in my life. I'm off my meds now. I don't know what you all are talking about. When we say we're on a low carb diet we mean refined carbs, not the good carbs like cruciferous vegetables. Experts sometimes forget to make that distinction.

Yep and they lump all low carb diets as "high fat" diets when that's not true. I rarely eat overly fatty meat and plenty of vegetables and some beans and lentils and almonds and my blood sugar is under control and I don't need to snack all the time like when I was vegan. I feel like vegan is safer as a cleanse type of diet but not sustainable long term. I was vegan for 5 years on and off and constantly craved sugar and would get shaky if I didn't eat. It was very difficult and expensive as well. I love eating this way now and it's so simple yet effective which says a lot. I doubt our ancestors had to meal plan or cut out meat. It was a simple meal of meat and whatever vegetable, fruit or legume was available or in season.

Apparently, all those diets can yield similar results. So we gotta see what they have in common: elimination of processed foods like refined sugar, seed oils, processed oils and processed fat. Eat only whole, real foods and apply intermittent fasting. Most of these diets, in my opinion, have more to do with what you eliminate than what you actually eat. There’s bad fat and good fat, bad carbs and good carbs etc

Agreed. The reason I feel good on carnivore, I think, is more to do with what I'm not eating than what I am. That said, I think it's hard to dispute that liver and eggs are two superfoods, and a vegan diet which eliminates them seems needlessly self-destructive to me.
I'm considering adding a few vegetables back to my diet at some point. I like broccoli and cauliflower. Love onions and garlic. But I'm wary of fruit, simply because I was a sugar addict and so much fruit these days has been cultivated as a vehicle for sugar. Artificially huge, artificially sweet... the fructose bomb completely undercuts the phytonutrients, imho.

    • @semi-mojo

Dr. Barnard. I checked the exact same study you mentioned, and it has nothing to do with the keto diet. In this study, people consumed no more than 25% of calories from carbs considered as keto dieters. Considering the average 2000 calories consumption for American females, no more than 500 calories should be coming from carbs, which is translated into whooping 125gm. Consuming 125 gm of carbs daily has nothing to do with keto, carnivore, or even low carb diet. I saw similar studies and claims from medical doctors and journals over and over and none of these studies were done on true carnivore or keto dieters. To be able to say keto diet doubles the chance of causing heart issue, then study should done on true keto people.

I personally have witnessed how much more aggressively the keto diet and Paleo diet have been advertised and promoted to people right after that film, along with a surge of Collagen powders and collagen products (I'm guessing they had to do something with all that beef that people were giving up; just my thought). I also have witnessed people I NEVER thought would go vegan, actually try the vegan diet after the film. But to witness the meat industry try to push their products and their diet even more aggressively definitely showed me just how much of a war this is.

Look, I know the problems of a ketogenic diet. I'm not in any way arguing such a diet is healthy in comparison to a wfpb diet. I also expect that whatever study is being referred to does indicate that keto diets increase heart disease in the long run.
My comment was simply about discussing a study and never identifying it nor giving much in the way of detail about how it was run. That is a tactic I would associate with the keto movement, not PCRM.

There is more than enough protein in fruits and vegetables and millions have proven this over and over for decades. Keto is great for type 2 diabetics focusing on moderate protein. 7 to 10 cups of vegetables a day. Keto is a great option for those with sugar problems. The problem is that if their is significant fat in the diet, then when carbs are eaten, the blood sugar remains high for a longer period of time. When eating carbs with a low fat diet your blood sugar will rise after eating carbs and return to normal as the sugar goes from the blood into the cells. Of course, refined carbs are not great and complex carbs are better, but if you reduce the fat in your diet even refined carbs can be eaten. Keto is lowering blood pressure and reducing edema. We usually have sugar stored between muscles, so we are always ready for fast movements having energy ready.
In keto, you don‘t really get enough carbs to refill those stores and they stores are empty.
The stores have also an other function, keeping water in your tissues. If they are empty, the body struggles to hold onto the water you do drink. And in your case, it is exactly what you want.
But if that works well for you, there might also be the question if an diuretic - works in a similar way- would work well for you.
But if you ask me, keep with unsaturated fat on keto to avoid high LDL-C.

Except I do eat 3 or 4 brazil everyday for the selenium. Many times a eat a small piece of liver just because of high vitamin count. Cheap too! I buy packages of 4 slices. Only $2.75 at Walmart. I eat half a piece a day. $2.75 for a whole week! Sometimes I will even make one package go 2 weeks. Takes just a little. Chew your meat real good. That is VERY important. Take kelp capsules everyday. If you have a low thyroid output take 10 to 15,000 IU of D3/ K2 or eat greens with K2 in them. Just telling you what works for me. Drink plenty of water. Do pink salt and some sea salt for minerals and electrolytes. I eat two somewhat small meals a day. Never gorge yourself. Eat a small amount of fruit unless you cannot. To me it is not wise to eat only meat or only eat plants. I do believe it is better to eat greens/ vegetables as 75% and no more than 20 to 25% meat. Just my opinion. I eat big salads. Humans prevent heart problems the same way all animals prevent heart problems - eat only the things that are appropriate for your species.
      Cow's don't have heart disease.
      They only eat plants.
      Lions don't have heart disease.
      They only eat meat.
How can this be? Meat is supposed to cause heart disease, right?
Well, if an animal's digestive system specializes in processing meat, meat will never cause heart disease in that animal.
Well, do you think humans are closer to cows or lions in terms of their digestive systems?
Let's take a look at just two comparisons:
      1) Ruminating chambers
      Has ruminating chambers?
      Cows--Lions--humans
      ✅️----❌️----❌️
      2) Stomach acid strength
      Cows--Lions--humans
      6.2----1.5----1.5
So, from just these two points, you can see that humans are very different from cows and more similar to lions in terms of their digestive system.
Lions eat only meat and do not get heart disease.
Humans have similar digestive systems to lions.
Therefore, humans can eat meat without creating heart disease.
One of the biggest myths in modern nutrition is that meat is bad for humans.
If you want to get into all the details about how that myth began and how it is maintained today, check out a book called The Big Fat Surprise.
If you want a healthy heart, eat more like a lion than a cow.

The big problems with keto are the lack of fibre, lack of nutrients, and loading up on unwanted cholesterol. Many of keto dieters are quite happy to eat dozens of eggs a week, bacon by the slab and loads of dairy… with some veggies on occasion. And then drink oil loaded coffee to be able to go to loo.
What most keto followers seem to forget is that following a whole food, plant based way of eating also gets rid of heavily processed junk food and sugars. And if your cholesterol IS high then stay away from oils and fats as well. Basically, go and eat the wonderful array of plants that we have available and get on with your life. (And where you can get and can afford to, eat organically grown crops rather than items from monoculture farms.)

      Barnard would get obliterated.
I'm a construction worker and I could completely destroy his entire position with just a few questions:
      1) How many randomized control trials show that cholesterol contributes to heart disease?
      2) How many of the existing epidemiological studies that show an association between elevated cholesterol and heart disease also made sure that the participants weren't (a) drinking, (b) smoking, (c) doing other drugs, etc, etc.
      The answers are simple:
      1) There are *_ZERO_* randomized control trials that show cholesterol has a causal link to heart disease. Not a single one.
      2) There are *_ZERO_* existing epidemiological studies that actually adjusted for confounding factors like drug abuse, lack of exercise, existing health conditions, etc.
In other words, all of the "science" that Dr. Barnard is leaning on when he says "the studies show..." are all worthless.
There are no studies -- not a single one -- that are anywhere near the quality needed to show any link between cholesterol levels and heart disease.
And Barnard would try to sidestep the questions, and squirm around them, but I wouldn't let him move on.
The discussion wouldn't go anywhere until he provided specific studies to back up his "bad cholesterol" claims.
And then I would bring up each of those specific studies as he mentioned them, and show how the studies didn't account for drinking, smoking, and other terrible life-style choices.
And I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Dr. Barnard is a Seventh Day Adventist or is funded by them.
Their religion is strictly against eating animals and they believe it is unhealthy by God's design.
They use their massive medical network to push the anti-meat eating agenda.

    Another wonderful podcast! Thank you!!

    • @Hertz2laugh
      @Hertz2laugh Рік тому +2

      Not wonderful. First problem:
      ■ The "low carb" diet used in this study isn't low carb, it's 25% of calories from carbs.
Low carb is 20 total grams of carbs per day -- the requirement to generally induce ketosis.
So, right off the bat, this entire study is trash -- it isn't a study on low carb anything. It just made up its own definition of "low carb" and ran with it.
      ■ Neil Barnard claims "the whole idea of the low-carb diets was, 'you need to lose weight'."
      1) Low carb diets are how all humans ate for hundreds of thousands of years -- it is an ancestrally and species-appropriate way of eating
      2) In modern medicine, low-carb, ketogenic diets were first used to treat epilepsy, not for weight loss
So, in the first three minutes of the podcast, we get misinformation.
      ■ Neil goes on to claim that Ketones "sort of poison the body a little bit and tend to reduce appetite"
      1) The human heart use ketones almost exclusively over glucose for energy. Why would this be if ketones were toxic?
      2) The human brain prioritizes ketone use over glucose (not as much as the heart). Why would our brains prefer toxic ketones over glucose?
      It's an utterly ridiculous claim.
      ■ Barnard also suggests that it is the lack of eating that causes weight loss on a low-carb diet -- that not eating carbs + appetite suppressing effects of ketones is what causes weight loss
      1) Low carb diets induce fat loss by preventing carb-induced insulin spikes, and via ketosis -- when exogenous carbs are limited and insulin remains at a normal level, your body uses fat for energy so you lose fat. Very simple.
      2) It has *_NOTHING_* to do with limiting portion size or calories -- it is virtually impossible to gain fat on a ketogenic diet regardless of calories consumed. I ate 12 eggs and two to three big, fatty steaks per day all cooked in butter and lost 30 lbs in three months. That's over 2500 calories per day.
      ■ Barnard says that people find low-carb diets unssustainable and want to "go back and have an apple and banana again"
Yes -- when you are literally addicted to sugar, you are going to get sugar cravings and want to eat sugar again if you stop eating sugar.
All addictive substances come from plants:
      -- Nicotine
      -- Cocaine
      -- Opium
      -- Caffeine
      -- Sugar
What happens when you suddenly cut out any of those chemicals? You feel like sh■t, and get cravings for them...
      ...because you're an addict.
It's not that you want something healthy, it's that you're a sugar addict and apples are packed with sugar.
      ■ There isn't a single ---- not one ---- study that shows a causal relationship between cholesterol levels and heart disease.
The only studies that exist are epidemiological studies that show a "possible association" between cholesterol and heart disease.
And, those studies were so horribly constructed that the didn't even track whether or not the people being observed were drinkers, smokers, exercised, ate sugary foods, etc -- they are junk studies.
Those are the points from the first five minutes of this podcast.
It's *_laughable_* to think this show can be taken seriously.
      This isn't science, it's *_religion._*

    • @Hertz2laugh
      @Hertz2laugh Рік тому

@@11235Aodh I think you might be mistaking Inuits *having low free ketones* with Inuits not being able to go into ketosis.
Current methods of ketone testing do not measure ketone generation directly but only measure *_unused_* ketones in the blood.
The longer a person is in ketosis - a state in which the body is readily producing ketones and using them for fuel - the more efficient they become at using up ketones that are produced.
That's why people who are new to ketogenic eating tend to freak out when the ketone urine test strips show fewer ketones over time.
In other words, over time, a person in ketosis will have fewer and fewer free ketones because their body is getting better and better at producing exactly the amount of ketones needed, and better and better at rapidly using up available ketones.
Inuits are absolutely in ketosis, readily producing and using ketones. It's just that the way we test for ketones can only tell us about free, unsused ketones, not the actual rate of ketone production and use.
Eventually we'll probably be able to directly measure rate of production, and that will show that Inuits are in ketosis.
It's a tech and testing issue, not an Inuit issue.
      Hope that makes
