Classic Game Room reviews SALAMANDER DELUXE PACK PLUS from Konami for the Sega Saturn released in 1997, a SHMUP fan's dream containing three awesome arcade style shoot 'em ups; Salamander, Life Force and Salamander 2! Shoot enemies, eyeball brain things, funky chickens and space eels in these awesome spaceship shooters which have much in common with the Gradius series. CGR Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus video review features Salamander gameplay in HD action recorded from Sega Saturn with the Action Replay card (this is a Japanese import).
These games look amazingly beautiful also. The soundtrack is awesome too. Such an underrated series.
Sega Saturn NTSC J all the Way !! Amazing system.
Wow! Those graphics could almost pass for Dreamcast. Dam! Now I'm going to have to give in, and buy a Sega Saturn.
floating brain with arms? Amazing!
I always loved Gradius to death, but moving onto Salamander is like becoming a man. These games are F-ING HARD!
Got Life Force on NES, Salamander Portable PSP, and this on both PS1 and Saturn. One can never have enough Salamander versions if they are a Gradius fan (like myself). Salamander 2 is easier due to having unlimited continues on the first loop ONLY, loop 2 you can kiss those goodbye. But trying 1 credit runs and you see how vicious this game really is (and quite awesome).
Thank you, I was looking for that as well.
I should have been more specific, I actually meant that techno beat playing when the squirrel was onscreen.
Thanks i'll check it out! I've never really been into these but seeing Mark playing games like these make them seem soo much fun!
I played the Salamander collection on the PSP, it was quite good
Wow Salamander 2 looks amazing...
I am so lucky to own a copy of Life Force. Salamander on Saturn costs up in the hundreds. Still, great game, if you love games, you will love this one!
Lord Karnage has returned!!!
Bussler for President!
Games like this is why the Saturn did so well in Japan
IT HAS RETURNED
Grew up with the NES Life Force!
+G Truesdale Same here. It was commonly mistook for a sugar rush though.
dat classic arcade sound!
Agreed. We need Evil Squirrel Music, not another plug for the dot cahm
I'll always love the NES Lifeforce.
Hey Mark, it also available on the PSP under the same name, since PSP games are region free you can import it without trouble.
Ranking system is brutal in Salamander.
SHOOT THE CORE!
I've never seen Salamander II. I need this collection.
Salamander is the Best Game Ever! This is my favorite game! Thanks mark for reviewing it! I play it for almost 20 years now!
demon squirrel is back!
Konami once again shows it's love for Japanese Sega Saturn owners in giving them a collection of challenging shmups.
I envy them.
Salamander 2! I didn't know that game and now I have to play it, I love the Gradius style.
Salamander indeed is hard as hell!
i love that Lifeforce/Salamander boss music
PERFECT INTRO Mark!
Shoot the core !!! I really enjoy this spin off to the gradius series, konami really should consider making a update to this. Also mark this collection is also available for the PSP to.
Thank you for bringing back that lovable Killer Squirrel
Cool, I've been waiting on this review for quite some time. I got the game after I saw it the CGR Saturn review a couple of years back, and I've loved it ever since. By the way, you should also check out Konami's Gradius Deluxe Pack for the Saturn, it's pretty good as well!
Hey Mark! Great review! I have a question as to if there is a game not so impossible but has qreat gameplay visuals and soundtrack similar to this say on Wii or 360?
WHOO! Long live Lord Karnage! :D
nope, those two companies were known for making the greatest games of every generation. I think Konami did their best stuff for MSX and NES
best intro... keep it
I wish I could play this kind of game but, I don't have patience. Nice review Mark!
Another Saturn Game. I wish I was there playing with you Mark.
YEA!! THE DEMON SQUIRREL IS BACK!!!!!
Hahahaha! Mark finally yielded and returned the squirrel back to his rightful place! Welcome back CGR squirrel! We missed ya!
Mark is loving Sega Saturn week
@bbutters2 SNES consoles always had super slowdown when driving Shoot 'em Ups, the processor couldn't handle them that well.
Probably the Thunder Force games are the best place to start. They won't kick your nads in right away like most of these games do
YES!! THE DEMONIC SQUIRREL HAS RETURNED
my favorite shooter ever made.
Life Force was the first shooter I ever played. Still one of my all-time favorite, made all the better with Salamander.
I must find a copy of this disc.
Try Thunder Force 4 on the Mega Drive/Genesis. You'll never let go of it, and, in the remote case you do, you'll pick it up again.
You could also tell me of a console you like and I could recommend you shooters for it. I know plenty of them!
Saturn also has a version of DoDonPachi with an added stage exclusive to it's version.
they don't make games like this anymore Wow!
Such as all of them just discontinued UMD games!!!
I remember stumbling upon the PC Engine version of Salamander a few years ago. I had grown up with Life Force on the NES, so I knew it would be a fun experience. To this day, though, I still prefer Life Force. Salamander does that annoying Gradius thing of sending you back earlier in the level when you die.
That doesn't happen on the Arcade version of Salamander
Mark, you should try and get a copy of Battle Garegga, one of the best SHMUPS ever made according to the SHMUPS forum. It has some sort of progressive difficulty where the game gets harder the better you do. It also has some of the best SHMUP music I've ever listened to.
This gets a hearty thumbs up for both salamander and the squirrel. Mostly the return of squirrel. The internet - proving the power of rabble since Al Gore invented it.
Nice skills BTW
Bwahahahha! This new squirrel logo rocks! Drunk even before the beer. =D
the squirrel is back.what a good day!
I had an lmao moment when I saw the squirrel just stuck there... hope everyone's happy now :-P
SALAMANDER 2 Electric Boogaloo :D
A review, in general, should address four things; what's the game about, what're the good points, what're the bad points, and is it worth the money. These concerns can be addressed by playing the game for a significant amount of time and showing some competence, but not necessarily completing it all the way.
Even a review based on half a game like Mass Effect will tell me enough to influence my decision to purchase a game or not as long as it covers those four points. It's not that complicated.
I'd recommend the Raiden games. Raiden Fighters Aces is fairly cheap for the 360 and offers a pretty good sampling of the series.
The squirrel is back...but in a different approach.
This is one of the reason I wish I had a Saturn.
LOVE the new 01 sec intro.
You gotta love the beer with the squirrel head revolving in an almost perfect yet improvised circle....CLASSIC GAME ROOM .COM!! :0
He finally brought back the squirrel!
The squirrel has returned, the galaxy is at peace.
Looks off the hook. Shoot em' up fanatic! :-)
Mark brought the squirrel back, hope is restored.
It is about time to release the Sega Galaxy!
Sigh... crazy people watching CGR for the squirrels.
Yay for Sega Saturn Week!
Salamander 2 is fantastic.
Yes the squirrel is back!!
Hell yes
the squirrel is back!!! :)
Awesome game! didn't know the saturn had this...in fact don't know much about the saturn...
MVHH
YAY! the squirrel is back!~
Yay the squirrel is back
Does anyone know what the music is that he used in the intro? I've heard it on his vids before but I've never found it.
LOVE the Salamander 2 OST!
I almost died when this was finally emulated in MAME.
Mmm that music is lovely.
He always says the spaceship shooters are hard, and he's always really good at them.
In after the haters' attack. Despite being a collector (who owns 180 games), I completely agree with you. I wish "retro" games would've never become hip - as you say, there's plenty of guys who not just only earn money from selling old games; there are some that even manage to make a living out of it.
The funny thing is those who own them will never play them, and more likely than not, the ones buying them won't either.
You're right.
God, the music...
Possessed squirrel on a beer mug? I'll gladly take it.
Hell Yeah !
i was playing life force on my nes last night and geeezz it was kicking my ass, even with the autofire on!!
This is Lifeforce. I had no idea this was on the Saturn.
spaceship shooters are the best
What's a good first spaceship shooter game to play, the only one I got is nemesis on the original gameboy and i'm not really digging it
lol you guys just love the squirrel don't you? mark was probably laughing his ass off at all the comments
man i feel so sorry the brain boss got eaten, i really liked the boss.
Depends on what type. I prefer bullet hells myself
Yay we have the squirrel and beer.
YAY SQUIRREL! FINALLY MY DAYS ARE BACK TO NORMAL! I LOVE YOU SQUIRREL!!!!!
squirrel is back!!
Classic game room .com background music playing !! Fuck yeah
It really bothers me that Xexex was never released on Saturn.
hmmm...was the saturn region free?
MVHH
Very nice review!
He had to lower the difficulty on Catherine, but besides from that I think you're right. Also I don't blame him, I beat Catherine on hard and think I got a terminal illness from the stress.
OMG Frigging EPIC Intro
Haha he did what someone asked in a previous video in the comments, brought back the squirrel!
feel like playing SALAMANDER 2 right now
