  • If you have a good thought about someone, make sure you tell them. Be a hero and don’t feel awkward complimenting someone you care about.
Wonders of the First has over $1 million in the first 12 hours! Should you back this CCG??
    Likes
    1. Print and play decks, what a GREAT idea!
    2. Epic artwork
    3. Clean, basic cards that can be buffed up with other cards
    4. High collectability
    5. No draft, set, or collector booster. All of that is combined into 1.
    Concerns
    1. How long will the 1st edition print run go for people (collectors) who want a true “limited” set
    2. Tracking resources (actions, energy, faith, etc)
    3. Will I get that same feeling of catharsis “taking stones” that I get from damaging another player (like MTG and Pokémon)
    4. Will the 7 round game-play leave me with stuff to play that I wasn’t able to get out in time??
    5. The cost to get into this game is crazy high!

I didn't see any real story on their site, even though they have someone for that.
I'm not against ethical AI, but I didn't see any special focus on the art more than typing some AI prompts in Midjourney (even if they used a long list of expertly chosen prompts, which took all of 5 minutes) and using WHATEVER the AI generator produced, so, not much for the art or theme community there.
I didn't really see any new ground-breaking mechanics, just a mixture of old. You could possibly argue that, though.
I saw no focus on the player or community...just a stone cold 1 of 1! Yes, you are really only getting 9 cards and one junk token card per booster pack? Really! This CCG is HIGHLY focused on set collection, not so much on play.
The grab bag of art just kills me! Any character type you can imagine (mermaid, cowboy, robot, dragon, vampire, etc.), which is whatever cool AI image they could prompt up was included in the game, so I really don't see a theme unless it is randomness!
I know collectors and investors want to jump on this boat, like crazy. However, if the core of the experience for the player isn't great, having high prices, less value per card, impossible to get the cards you want because of no-reprints, no real theme, no good unifying story (good luck with that!), or anything else incentivizing to the player, then I see card values tanking. Kinda sad that they list about 30 people on their team and all they really were able to produce on their own is card scarcity. It'll work on those with FOMO, but I don't see it as the next great CCG. Games like Argent Saga had a much better chance, but like most failed CCGs, trouble with the leadership not really understanding the market, and being poor managers themselves, they fizzle out pretty quick.
Also, Commander is supposed to last for hours!
😄 It's not really a competitive format for most people. I guess that is why it is so popular, people just want to play it casually.

I will say one thing when it comes to the AI art. They’re not just prompting and throwing the images up. There is a lot of time spent cleaning up the art or getting general concepts of what they’re looking for from their art team and then throwing that into their prompts as well.
Their Discord is a great place to get information if you’re real sus about the game itself.

The $55 tier gives you two starter decks, but if you want a little more variety, the $95 tier gives you two starter decks plus a mini booster box (6 packs). The booster packs will let you customize the deck a little more. The player mats are not necessary. They just help you keep things organized.

It’s a 2 player game for now, but they’re working on a multiplayer format. You really only need the 2 starter decks to play, but the $195 level will give you 2 starter decks plus a full booster box (24 packs) as well as 1 player mat. The booster packs are randomized cards that will allow you to create your own deck or customize your 2 starter decks which gives you a lot more variety than just the 2 decks alone. The rules are pretty straightforward and the game seems challenging and fun, but I’ve only played a couple times so far.

As there are still a couple of days left, I have to warn anybody who is thinking about investing into the game.
The actual gameplay looks... fine. Nothing special. But I have seen worse. If you think you might like how the game plays, just print out their demo decks. But please, don't buy anything from this company.
First of all, they are lying to you on their kickstarter page. Well... maybe not lie? They claim to have illustrators and graphic designers working on some parts of the artworks. But it really doesn't show. Not on the artwork and not on their team. Most of the released card artwork is credited to... a game designer and the narrative lead? They have no art direction. Also, they claim to use AI not only for their art, but apparently for narrative design and mechanical design as well. Which leaves me absolutely flabbergasted.
One of their core principles, as stated by them in one of their own promotional videos, is that they DO NOT BALANCE the cards before release. Instead, they assign each individual card a rating. Based on what metric? We do not know. But these ratings are what's supposed to inform the strength of a deck as a whole, which is then used for matchmaking and competitive formats. These ratings are not printed on the card but will require a digital tool. A tool which - to public knowledge - hasn't been developed yet. It isn't even known if that database will be free to access. Also, they can change the rating of a card at any time, effectively banning it from certain tier formats. They can also reduce a cards rating, making it in turn more powerful to a reduced cost of opportunity in deck building. Normally, this would be questionable but somewhat fair. Where it not for something else...
There will be no reprints. This game will be an absolute horror to get started with. And it will be a horror to keep up with the meta. Everytime a new set releases, they can bump up the ratings of older cards, rendering them nearly unplayable so players have to choose: Buy all of the new chase cards to be able to play in their preferred tier or stick with their deck and try to compete in a higher tier against newer decks which are more powerful by design.
At a first glance, it looks like this game has found a way to stop powercreep. This couldn't be further from the truth. The power creep is hidden inside the ratings and the resulting cost of opportunity that enable the creators to shadow ban cards and force people to buy the new packs. And unlike a game lik MTG with predictable rotation cycles, this game will rotate cards at a whim. And if they ever reduce the rating of a card out of print... well I sure hope you have saved a lot of money.
Not that anything of this will be relevant. Ever. Because everything about this project - aside from the actual gameplay - is designed to milk as much money out of you - with very little investment on their part - before cancelling the whole project. I highly doubt the game will survive beyond its second, or maybe its third set. The art direction is nonexistant. The narrative is scrambled together and is severly limited by them only using AI generated images which make it impossible to have recurring characters. The prizing is ridiculous. They are intransparent about what they use AI for. They have made MTG's reserved list, one of that games most hated features, into their core design principle. They do not care for balance or sustainability.
BUT. I do have a suggestion. Create your own game. Just for yourself and your friends. Trust me, you'll have much more fun creating your own cards than buying this crap. That's something that generative AI can actually be very useful for. Just... don't try to sell the art as your own. And if you just want to play, pick one of thousands of great games that already exist. I know, I sound like a hater who just doesn't want this product to succeed. The truth is, I'm not playing any TCGs or CCGs because even the existing models, while not being nearly as predatory, are not worth it. I am just really passionate about games and game design. And this product is an affront to everything that games are supposed to be.

    • @BeAHeroGaming
      @BeAHeroGaming  2 місяці тому +1

That’s totally fine that you feel this way! If this game doesn’t work for you then don’t buy it and play something else. But please don’t go on a quest to dissuade people from backing the game just because you don’t like it or don’t believe in the means they use. There are lots of people that thoroughly enjoy the game and its potential for collectability. If they waste their money on something that fizzles out that’s no sweat off your back. There are lots of games that I think are terrible, but I still hope they succeed because everyone doesn’t have to like what I like.

@@Grimoria24 thanks for the comment! I feel like saying something is “a scam” is a pretty bold accusation. But if someone thinks that, I would love to hear the evidence that leads them to that conclusion. Good to hear from someone who has some experience with the company. Thanks!

Maybe I can illuminate the situation. While this game, might not explicitly be a scam in and unto itself, a lot of the verbage the wonders team uses on both their kickstarter and their prior promo stuff has a very speculative investment feel. Furthermore, given the NFT background of the creators and of the project itself, I don't think skepticism is unwarranted here. (AI art isn't helping the argument either)
Edit: After scoring a rather unprecedented million+ in funding in the opening days, I have my concerns...
Edit 2: welp, kickstarter pulled and they relaunched with 500k in the opening minutes. Buyer beware.

My only explanation is that they’re referring to the retail cost when they list the savings.

I wonder who is going to be crazy enough to spend $4-8k on a card game. It’s completely insane in this current climate. Cost of living is skyrocketing and you’re gonna justify thousands for cards?
Always find these CCG’s just to darn expensive. Probably why I’ve never bought into MTG.
You could potentially be spending a lot of money on something that won’t even be valuable down track. I mean, it’s a new unknown game. MTG has been around long time.

      @BeAHeroGaming  3 місяці тому +1

Yes, you’re exactly right. MTG is a rabbit hole for sure. Once you get into it there’s no end in sight. It’s hard to play without wanting to collect.
With that said, I think 4-8k for WOTF is only going to be big-time collectors. People who are hoping that the game will really take off and they will have a ton of first edition. But it’s risky because as you’ve pointed out it’s a brand new game and it might not catch on. $55-195 will get you into the game as a player, but that’s not cheap either.

Gamrplay looks like a Wyvern ccg reboot. The cost for this game is pure stupidity. You have to spend 900 dollars just to have all six factions of the decks. They dont offer an option to just buy the 6 factions without all the fluff. Then each deck is $52.00, Really!!! What are they printed with, Gold? Then the uncertainty of the kickstarter funding at all. It's a resounding NO from me. This gives me Down To Hell and Stormsunder campain rip-off vibes. Hell No!

You can add-on a deck for $30. The kickstarter decks contain a limited foil card that won’t be in the retail version. I’ve heard those will be $20 or so without the limited foil card. Yes, the price is high, but the team behind it seems pretty solid. I think delivery will go just fine, but time will tell if the game really takes off.

Really genuinely appreciate your positivity but my guy, this is junk. This is a scam by and crypto bros. Star Wars unlimited, Lorcana, one piece, flesh n blood, on top of pokemon and yugioh, are all viable magic competitors. Even Altered, another kickstarter tcg, is way more legitimate. We should compliment people all day long, but not the ones who want to take advantage of us.

Thank you! I really am honestly curious what you mean by “scam.” A lot of people have said that but haven’t elaborated. Do you mean that they won’t deliver the product or that they are intentionally making a game that they know won’t survive? I would love to hear your thoughts!

@BeAHeroGaming wonders is originally an "NFT Collection" of 5000 AI-generated images, eg, jpgs you can pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for. NFTs were a fad/pump&dump scheme a couple years ago where a lot of uninformed people lost a lot of money.
This is following a similar pattern. They have a very dedicated discord community who have been aggressively hyping this everywhere. Almost all the official messaging about the game talks about its potential value and collectibility. The kickstarter itself has an average pledge amount around $700/person. The product pricing is through the roof even though the game is all pre-existing, AI generated assets. They've essentially made a cheap game, very quickly, and are selling it to unsuspecting people at enormous prices. Every savvy tcg and board game player I've seen on the internet is avoiding it like the plague. The end goal is for all these people at the top of the pyramid to offload their cards to others around/ before release while their artificial hype is high, and then everyone else is left with a bunch of cardboard with 1/10th or less of what they paid.
They have one (1) gameplay video, and you are actually only one of two(2) third parties to even talk about the game itself on youtube. Normally a new game on kickstarter will have coverage from a bunch of people, showing gameplay and interviewing the developers, etc. Here, they've obfuscated the game itself and there are no third party sources backing them up.
They might deliver a product, 50/50 since they have no experience publishing games, but it's not set up for success as a long-term thing. And it certainly will not be worth the price or hold the value when compared to other successful TCGs.
