After seeing this game, I really hope that Konami takes note and develop Gradius 6 for this generation. That would be like the best thing ever, in terms of shmups.
Housemarque are an old skool developer who made some awesome amiga games back in the day.
How pleased I was when I got Super Stardust HD on my PS3, which they followed up with the excellent Dead Nation.
Looks to me they have scored again with Resigun. Smiley faces all round...
He has great taste in games. He passes up the AAA games to play a smaller title because it offers more than most AAA games. I wish more developers would go back to the "High Score" days when getting a great score was the reason we keep playing that game, now we spend $60 to finish a 6 hour story mode and then the developers release DLC so you can spend MORE money just to have a reason to play it again. We shouldn't need to spend more money just for a reason to play a game we already paid for once more, we should have everything we want the first time around.
IdealIdeas100 I'm not talking about leaderboards, I'm talking strictly local high scores which you can fight over with friends. I will agree that leaderboards are always ruined by people who hack their scores, but I am more interested in high score games which push you to have that perfect run that gets you that high score to be happy about. Not many games do that anymore.

I don't care about BF4 or AC because i can play them on pc, and neither Knack or Killzone seem that cool but fuck, resogun makes me want to get a ps4, it looks so freaking awesome!
Same here, Resogun is the only launch game I really want. Really thinking of buying the PS4 and waiting for the good upcoming games and playing Resogun. XD
The visual style of this game is fantastic. I can't wait to play it.
BTW for any PS3 owners with Plus that dont have a PS4 yet, you can get this queued up so that you will be able to download it for free whenever you do get a PS4. Just go to the Playstation Store website and sign into your PSN to add it to your profile.
I second that. If you have Plus make sure to activate the downloads on the online PS Store. That way the games will be added to your download list, able to be activated as soon as you get a PS4. If it takes you a few months or a year to pick up a PS4 then you will have a wealth of PS Plus PS4 games waiting for you when you finally get a PS4 of your own!
This looks totally awesome, and is something that might make me get a PS4 sooner (I don't really buy consoles on release) rather than later. This is the sort of game I like playing!
And in this new age of shoot em ups very promising indeed.

Wait for the vita/ps4 bundle at Christmas for 500 bucks.

I love this game, played it for at least 20 hours, I got a high score of 33 million... the devs say if you manage to get to 10 million, your doing good! Its all about that multiplier.. I also found that if you throw humans to the rescue point you get more points! This is one of them games where everytime you play it, you find a new technique, a new intricacy. I can honestly see myself still playing this in the year 2020.. its so replayable. You either 'get it' or you just don't understand the mind-set, this is old school arcade shooting action at its finest.. honestly, I think this is the best game of its kind.
Sadly it's only on PS4.

Very few people know Defender... am so glad to have been one of the fortunate in my generation to have played this on a ColecoVision. Ah, the nostalgia.
Another favourite of mine was Venture... I know, sure, there are RPGs with superior graphics... but that Vron really scared the crap outta us then!
I also have played this on Colecovision. I loved my Colecovision. There's nothing quite like a good game of Frenzy.
Just a quick comment: the bass on this game is AMAZING!
Anyone who is interested in a PS4 and this game, do it. So far the system is awesome, more games will come. Resogun is fantastic.
This title is from the makers of another great series of games for the PS3 and the Vita : Super Stardust, which i highly recommend if you like twin stick shooters : very fun addictive game. I'm really looking forward for Resogun.
I knew I recognized the woman's voice in the game! She sounds like the the Super Stardust HD serie!
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm playing Resogun for the first time and wondering what kind of games are like it. With my backlog, I can wait for price drops on the PS4 and PS3 version of Super Stardust.

Its amazing how this game got shit reviews from most game reviewers, but watching this game it looks incredibly fun. Perhaps reviewers don't know what a schmup is anymore?

This is why I've turned to CGR over other review circuits more and more over the years. He doesn't seem to review with a particular bias towards genres. I mean it's obvious there are genres Mark prefers but when talking about a game he seems to take great care to not push that bias. I like this grading scale that instead of telling us what games are worth us buying, takes us knowing what we want for granted and stays out of the way of that unless its so bad its warranted. Just presenting the game as this channel does lets us decide whether a game looks good rather than be told its good.

Well reviewers don't really know what they are talking about i've played a lot of good games that got bad reviews. The reason i like CGR reviews is because Mark doesn't really review the games he talks about them and shows what they look like and you can pretty much make up your own mind about if it's good or not
DEFENDER was a very revolutionary game back then in the 80s, I believe RESOGUN makes justice to it's legacy.
This game looks amazing. Lets hope developers make a lot of psn games. Also PSN+ is a fantastic deal.
It actually reminds me of Defender 2000 on the Atari Jaguar. Protector SE was also a quality Defender clone on that under-rated piece of kit. Having recently purchased Sturmwind on Dreamcast and Nano-Assault Neo on Wii U, it is good to see the arcade games making somewhat of a comeback. I got Killer Instinct on my XB1 which is a great homage to the original and 90's arcade games, but needs more characters. Resogun will be definite purchase for me on PS4. I love blockbuster games and rpg's but sometimes a quick arcade title is what is called for!!
I absolutely love Resogun. I'm terrible at it but I just keep going back to it.
Using the R stick to shoot is ok, but after playing Deathsmiles I actually found using one button to shoot left and another for right just feels better than moving and holding the stick one way and then back the other.
Great Review Mark ! I Thought Defender as soon as I saw the flipback controlling and the character pickups .
This game is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it. Very well designed.
This looks like a great game for late night playing with the lights off.
If you hold the overdrive button down until the circle shrinks to the circle of your boost bar on the ship then let go you get a explosion that kills all the enemies in a circle about 5 ships radius, gives you a huge points boost, and makes your overdrive last longer.
I knew Mark would like this one.
I can not stop playing this game. It is so awesome and satisfying.

I played this for a dozen hours before even touching my boxed games.
Looks great, was looking at getting an Xbox but this sways me a bit. All the hype nowadays is FPS's, seems like the Xbox got a lot of the shmups last time around, it will be interesting to see where they go this gen.
I don't own either console, but Sony is just tearing it up straight out of the gate. People are loving the console and to have such a sweet arcade-inspired freebie like this available... Yeah, K.O.
I'm VERY late to the party, and downloaded this game off the PS Store, and this game is AWESOME!!!!!!!. Never played Defender before either. Kind of reminds me of R-Type on the Sega Master System in some way.

Here's hoping someone can give Tempest and Robotron 2084 a similar treatment as they did Defender with this.

This game is awesome. Took me back almost 30 years. Got my ps4 at launch with kill zone and AC black flag but this is the game I've been playing the most ! It's so addictive
There is 1 major problem with this game though !!!! Getting the joypad off your mate before they say " just 1 more go " .
Easly the best launch title for the PS4 and a huge bonus for subscribing to PS+.
It's a sort of paradox that the best game for a futuristic console like the PS4 is a traditional 2d shooter. Maybe the Sony's slogan "4 the gamers" has some fundaments :)

Picked up the PS3 version for $3.00 during the Indie flash sale. Not bad considering they bundled the Vita version with the PS3/PS4 editions. Sony should increase cross-buys for future titles.

The boss bass is so crazy in this game I actually wonder if it's bugged.
For me this is the best title on the ps4 by far all other games are much the same as ps3 this is stunning.

I am stuck trying to save the last human on the fourth level... it ALWAYS dies before the keepers even show up...

This game is pretty awesome even went for the platinum it was that fun I just want more levels maybe in the form of dlc but doubt that will happen.
Whelp, looks like I'm getting the PS4 because that is a game that I cannot deny. That is a kind of video game that I always key towards - Ikaruga, Castle Shikigami 2, Mobile Light Force 2, Geometry Wars: Galaxies, Sin and Punishment: Star Successor, Outland and Bangai-O HD: Missle Fury. And is that its very own OST being featured for real?? I'm a sucker for a real good OST and that, is nice.

Cool looking game but not pushing the PS4 in anyway. What i mean by this is why isn't it on the PS3 or PS Vita ? This is perfect for the Vita, looks great for short gaming bursts and also looks like the type of game you could lose hours with trying to beat your beat score.
