The book delves into even more serious stuff. Candace gets pregnant and doesn’t want the parents to know so Charlie takes her to “deal” with it. I think there’s something relatable in this movie for everyone whether it be depression, bullying, being gay, domestic violence, loneliness, studying and trying to get into your dream college, going to parties, etc.
I think a part that wasn't in the deleted scenes was Charlie witnessing a girl being SA'd at a party but didn't realize it until later, just adds to the pain that he keeps witnessing.

the abortion scene in the deleted scenes was really well done, actually, i wish people would react to the deleted scenes too because they are amazing, they should never have deleted those, it adds a lot to the movie and its already damn good
Fun Fact: This was shot in pittsburgh where I grew up. The house the character lived in was filmed on my street and I got to meet emma watson (got an autograph on my Deathly Hallows Book) and where they play football was my High School's stadium
You all got SO quiet when the premise of the movie hit. It was amazing seeing how deep into the movie you all got. This is one of those few movies in life you come across that drags you so deep into the lives, the love, and the hope a viewer can have for a character. I am shocked this movie has such a big following and such a little presence in entertainment history.
I love the way it is cut though. Because he does the imagined "Truth" scene and then it flashes back and there's that brief moment of relief to know it didn't happen..... then what ACTUALLY happened is sooooooo much worse
In the book Mr. Andersen visited Charlie after he got out of the hospital and invited him to his wedding! Such a good book and many plots that weren’t added due to time but added so much
Another great line is when Charlie says ,"I didn't think anyone noticed me," and patrick replied with,"We didn't think there was anyone cool left to notice." I feel like that sums up a lot of the high school experience when it comes to making friends, especially when starting at a new school or if you're super introverted.
“we accept the love we think we deserve” really is the the line of the movie, but the one i’ve come to love even more is “you can’t keep putting everyone else’s life ahead of yours and think that counts as love.” it’s always felt like a major callout to me
I don't know what it is about Oak but I can't seem to take my eyes of him during your reactions and when he talks afterwards. He seems to wear his heart on his sleeve and that's a magnetic quality in a person. His analysis are always poignant and sentimental in a good way. same, this book was huge in my development. I remember my mom said I couldn't read it because it had a gay character but I got it from a friend anyways. When I finished it she found it in my room and read it in one night. I remember being worried she'd be mad but she gave back and said sorry. It was a huge development for her too

There's a entire 40 minutes that they cut from the film were they showed what happened to Charlie's best friend their friendship with the curly haired girl in the cafeteria and why she's the way she is now. And what happened to Charlie in the hospital. But I would suggest reading the book. But the movie is my all time favorite. We accept the love we think we deserve is the best line out of any movie.
I agree with the Oak, "We accept the love we think we deserve" is one of my favourite lines. It sums up why so many people stay in abusive relationships, because you always hear people go "why did they stay so long?" That's probably the main reason why. The way they reveal the plot twist with aunt Helen is so well done. Throughout the movie they give you bits and pieces but none of it makes you think that there was something dark and sinister going on. Also, The Answer made a good observation that everybody needed Charlie just as much as he needed them. They were all going through/had gone through something (usually by some form of abuse). And I haven't read the book but I know there is more about his friend who died by suicide there, it just didn't make it into the movie (which is understandable). Two were filmed though and is featured in the deleted scenes on the DVD: During the Secret Santa party in the official version, Charlie gives Patrick a piece of paper, but the extended version showed the paper contained a poem written by Charlie's friend. Also in the deleted scenes (that were in the book) is an alternate opening with Charlie and his family at the hospital, Charlie talking to Susan, Charlie's parents being told by Mr. Anderson that Candace is being abused by her boyfriend, to which his parents take direct intervention, and Charlie taking Candace to the clinic to have an abortion after she tells him she's pregnant (apparently everybody wanted to keep this scene but it was cut so it wouldn't be rated R and they wanted it to be targeted at a younger audience). The book is semi-autobiographical; Stephen Chbosky has said that he relates to Charlie but in many ways his high school experience was different. Other characters, like Sam and Patrick, are manifestations of people he has known throughout his life. Also, some people have trouble believing that the characters (especially Sam, a music fanatic) would not only not recognise David Bowie's Heroes but would not be able to discover its identity for such a long time. But Stephen Chbosky admitted that this was true to his own life as a teenager in the early 1990s (especially not being able to find the song since this was before the internet and Google). And Rocky Horror reaction please! It's a classic!
The director wrote the book as well, in the late 90s. When you read the book you really feel close with Charlie’s letters, we’re like his “distant” best friend. I remember reading it and wanting friends like Sam, Patrick, Charlie and mr. Anderson
So glad you guys watched this. I share a lot of traits with Charlie and went through some pretty messed up stuff as a teenager, this film/book did such an amazing job at portraying how trauma can affect people, especially young people. I’m so glad this story was written.

This book saved my life. This film was nothing but a masterclass in storytelling and while soul crushing and beautifully heartbreaking the lessons of love, friendship, and therapy are SO IMPORTANT. I applaud you gentlemen for watching this film.
They have no toxic masculinity, they’re vulnerable and not afraid to show their emotions. They are amazing role models. Yes, these are hard topics, but life is hard sometimes and finding ways to cope is hard too. Other reactors may be afraid of showing emotion or may be embarrassed to shed a tear, but you three show your viewers that it’s okay to be vulnerable. We’re all human, and life is better when everyone is open minded and open hearted. The more emotional reaction videos you guys have made, are what made me a subscriber. After watching “The Impossible” with you guys, my entire perception of men changed because of you three. I never had a good father figure or male influence in my life, and I feel like this channel is healing that. I wish more men take some influence from you guys, and become more kind and empathetic. P.s. “A walk to remember” is an amazing watch as well. A Nicholas Sparks film, a classic. Emotional, gritty, intense, and worth the watch.
One of the defining films of my life too. I discovered when I was 48 years old and this film is exactly what high school life was like in 1991 and probably today.
I love this movie. The acting is incredible and beautiful storytelling. Ezra Miller is such a talented actor and it’s disappointing how far they have fallen. I hope one day they’re able to turn their life around. Great movie to watch during the holiday season. Happy holidays gents!

This came out a year before I started high school and it is THE definitive coming of age story for me. My friends and I made a ‘Tunnel Song’ playlist and we would sit around at Twilight every Friday after school and listen to it and talk about growing up. We learned the dance that Sam, Patrick and Charlie did to Come on Eileen and we still do it some times at parties when we’re feeling nostalgic. This movie means so much to me because like you said I was at the right age when it came out
I think Charlie reacting to his best friend was more of a reaction from someone who was used to holding in his emotions. Also, he was unexpectedly stoned at the same time so he couldn't fully feel the weight of what he was admitting to. He said I kind of wish he had left a note expressing that he never got a resolution about what happened. Most people in his life didn't "show him much appreciation or consideration." I can't explain too much more than that if you intend to read the book though. He felt his Aunt cared about him the most out of everyone but she was also the person who hurt him the most.
This is such a beautiful and raw movie to watch. I think it encapsulates the high school life perfectly from the perspective of a "wallflower." I cried towards the end and knowing that people go through this everyday, both the good and the bad, makes me happy and infuriated at the same time. Glad you guys reacted to this.
I’m forty and an introvert. In high school some kids would feel sorry for me and try to befriend me. But they’d give up because I didn’t really respond much to conversation. I was just about to turn thirty when I met my best friend. And believe me I tried every possible way to ensure I made friends with them, including leaving my comfort zone. That’s where I found this story more relatable than when I read the book as a teenager. You’ll go out of your way when you find YOUR PEOPLE.
I remember reading the book when I was like 14/15 and then taking the book to the cinema 😂 for the screening I watched. The title of the tunnel song is never mentioned in the book so when I found out it was Heroes by David Bowie... The feeling I experienced was otherworldly. I absolutely adore this film and it was foundational for my teenage years.
Already watched the uncut version with you guys but this is one of my favorites (and top 3 favorite book ever) so I’m just here to run up the numbers & watch a few more times!
I completely agree with your take on how the movie had some really deep topics but they didn’t get too heavy with it to make the overall movie really daunting. In my perspective I think it really showcases like how so many people will be going thru some really heavy trauma but they still have to carry on with life, life still continues even with all the heavy trauma they have and that is what I interpreted from the way the scenes were shot and how it went from heavy to light hearted‼️
I've never read the book, but based on the movie I get a real sense of hopefulness. Despite all of the traumatic things which have happened to the characters, those points of levity and friendship, throughout the film, leave you with hope. Hope that Charlie and his friends will find their peace and move forward to a happier future.
i remember watching this movie for the first time as a freshman in high school and i still cry every time i watch it. It's so real and there's no sugar coating to how much pain a child can really go through, so much pain. At times you almost forget these are freshman and seniors in high school but those years, from 14-18 are so impactful. Still one of my favorite films.
This movie hit for me not as a teen myself flashbacking, but as the mother who had that teen that had zero friends. My oldest is Autistic & she had 3 friends in jr high, but they ended up going to diff achools for high school so she had to start her freshman yr w zero friends. The amount of worry & anxiety was at peak for me & few other things matched the fear i had for her. For 2 weeks straight shed come home w same nonverbal no smiles just very flat affect as some Autistic kids will have & then in week 3 everything changed. She almost was running into the house w the biggest smiles and talking so fast flapping her arms up & down as she will do in extreme excitement. And that thing that changed the life of my daughter was she met her friend. These girls had such a spark & connection that when they were together they could do anything, be anything, & were a force! The most amazing bond of friendship ive ever witnessed. You only need that one true friend & any more is just extra!!!❤💞❤️
This was my favourite movie as a teen but i didn't fully understand/connect with it until several years later when i went through a very long very deep spiral and was diagnosed with depression. I hadn't done anything but go to class, come home, and sit in my room alone for probably over a year maybe longer, and then one day i was miraculously feeling up to doing something so i came out of my room (my family looked at me like i had 3 heads) and decided to watch this movie. I remembered most of it but there were bits and pieces i had forgotten, and i just started weeping like a baby from the scene where everybody toasts him at the party all the way til the end of the movie. It was a catharsis i had never experienced before because Charlie made me feel seen in a way i hadn't been in years. If life was Inside Out it'd definitely be a core memory of mine. Side note: the actress who plays Aunt Helen (Melanie Lynskey) also played Kathleen in episode 4&5 of The Last of Us
I quote the "we accept the love" line all the time to people who are in these crazy relationships where there is abuse, where there is neglect, where they are being walked all over, and they ask me should they stay or is it something wrong with them, and this quote is so relevant because its a two way street. Yes, no one deserves to be slapped across the face, but if you wake up tomorrow and you willingly go back to this person time and time again, you're bleeding and bruised, you're part of that cycle of abuse---you're confirming that this is where you think you deserve to be and be treated. I relate to the awkwardness of the movie a lot too. I'm a true introvert. It takes me a while to warm up to people, and in high school, I walked in and quite literally stood against a wall hoping someone would say hello because I couldn't get myself to do it. The best part was finding my tribe, my people. We were awkward together. We literally were the only group of friends to have our own small table at the very front of the cafeteria. We felt special, and happy to be misfits together. Its 20 years later, and we're still in each others lives, went to college together, been through marriages, divorces, deaths, all of it, so there is hope if you're a wallflower, that you can find your people.

Never seen this movie before, but it sure took us on a very emotional journey hitting us with some heavy themes, sprinkled with bit of comedy to help us fully absorb everything in the story, all actors did a great job in their roles, nice movie. Quinn writing down the "Poetry writes me" line hehe & i liked what Quinn said that Charlie didn't have to change to make friends or get the girl, he was just himself & found 'his people' 🙂
I was 13 when this came out, and it felt like it was made for me at the time with what I went through as a kid. It’s such a weird experience being healed and an adult with my own kids now, but remembering how all of this felt at the time, and how I thought I would feel that way forever. To all the former wall flowers, we made it ❤

This is my favorite movie ever. Everything Charlie has gone through I went through when I was younger so the book and movie will always stay close to my heart ❤
There are so many things that lead back to Aunt Helen's abuse of Charlie. The way Sam's hand on his thigh triggers memories of the abuse. The upset reaction he has to seeing his sister being slapped by Derek, hints at his own pity over Aunt Helen as a victim of domestic abuse and how that may have contributed to her own abusive streak. The way he almost appears to black out as he violently punches those boys beating up Patrick. At that point, his trauma from the abuse is manifesting into violent outbursts that could make him lethal, something which really frightens him. When his friends stay away from him after his truth or dare kiss, it's as if the loneliness of his abuse experience, his feelings of worthlessness, are being mimicked again through a new kind of loneliness. He finds a connection with Sam after she admits she was abused by her dad's boss, which he references when he says about them having been through similar things. He also acts naturally kind and puts others before him regularly, because Aunt Helen found sick, one sided relief in her abuse of Charlie, preying upon his innocence and sweet nature. It's almost as if that's the only way he knows how to be.
Omyghod!!! This is a dream come true 😭😭😭!!! Its like a Christmas present! Thanku so so much!!!!!! Honestly the chemistry between Logan, Emma, and Ezra is the best! Its a Very nice casting. I don't think other actor would be able to pull that natural chemistry they have with each other! And Logan Lerman should have been nominated for Oscar cause he's performance here is really really good!

I think this is an excellent movie that I have recommended many times. I figured the "best friend" was another damaged kid he had met when he was hospitalized for his mental breakdown before high school, but that kid wasn't able to overcome, maybe lacked the support system Charlie had of a loving family and good friends. (I could relate to this story as I had a miserable, horrible family life that made me suicidal. I wouldn't have survived without my good friends and boyfriend in high school and beyond). Some of this movie made me think of another excellent movie with heavy themes, Ordinary People (1980).

I always say this, but as much as I love the "we accept the love we think we deserve" quote, nothing hits harder than "you can't just put other people ahead of yourself and think that counts as love." Now that, that line changed my life.
One of my most disliked characters in this movie is Craig and the thing that irks me a lot is how he refused to go to one of Sam’s school dances cause he thought it was “lame” yet dates a high school student 🤦♀️ I love the book, it’s just as amazing as the movie. I saw this movie in theatres when it came out (I was 16 about to turn 17) and read the book immediately after.
This movie is based on a book. The book is really good. It is written letter style. He is writing letters to himself as a way to vent. And you get a little more in the book then you do the movie. But I love the way they made this movie
The movie did great in following the book because the man who wrote the book produced the movie. However, the book is written as a series of letters, just like the movies started. We are reading for all purposes a young adults journal. Although the movie and the book are SO similar, I strongly suggest you read it to get the full life like context. It is a fairly short book and a fast read.
I absolutely love this movie and the book. Thankfully I never had the same situation that Charlie did with his aunt, but watching my father and step-father die in hospice made me very familiar with his flashback situation. There would be months where when I would try to sleep, I'd have my dad's face stuck in the center of my mind, the cornered rabbit terror in his eyes when they took off the oxygen, his eyes staring into me as he passed, my step-mom jerking his head away after he had already started to stiffen up so she could kiss his forehead more easily, that sallow shade of yellow gray he turned. I couldn't make it go away so I would have panic attacks every night for months. But at least I have the comfort in knowing that he knew I was there until his final breath, I can't imagine how much worse it would be for Charlie.
I read this book in my grade 12 English class and we watched the movie at the end of the unit. I never really went through such drastic events as Charlie but my overall school experience (especially secondary school) wasn't too nice and I can really relate to him in many ways. Particularly, this story made me realize I myself was a wallflower kind of person and I finally had a concise way to describe what I'm like. And several of the moments and reveals in the story hit me like an absolute freight train and I absolutely love this story for it. Thank you guys for making this video and sharing your thoughts❤
You should watch the deleted scenes! They add so much to the best friend plotline and add some plotlines that have been cut from the movie which in the book are very important.
I’m no psychologist but I have an understanding that sometimes when people experience traumatic situations like Charlie did as a kid with his aunt, it can be so traumatic the brain blocks it out. It’s not till later on in life you get snippets, flash backs, details you missed. It’s as if the brain is saying you’re ready to deal with this now or you know what this means at the point in your life and so it’s time to unpack this. Or, in Charlie’s case, you carry so much of everyone else’s secrets and pain that the stress and upset can trigger it. I think the film does a really good job of showing that. I might be wrong but it just seemed like he was understanding it and piecing it all together as we - the audience were.
As one of the many people recommending it, I’m so glad you guys watched this. One of the reasons I love this movie is how relatable and real the characters are. I especially relate to Charlie as I love writing, am fiercely loyal, was without friends for a long period of my life, was hospitalized for trying to end myself my first year of high school, and was abused by a female relative (my mom). I like that this movie spotlights a female abuser because most people think it’s only males and also highlights a male victim.

This movie (and the book) is so powerful and it really sticks with you, especially if you've had a difficult school experience, or can relate to many of the difficult topics that are brought up, but it's still such a heartwarming story. It really deserve all the praise and should get more recognition that it does. Thank you for watching it, and thank you for reminding me that I should read and watch it again.

People look to Media to gather shared experiences, and a lot of movies don't do a good job in portraying highschool. This movie does it amazing. Superbad is one of the only other movies I can think of that REALLY gets the idea and feeling of being in highschool. They are two different experiences and point of views and this one is just so surreal and raw and deep. Very relatable for me and I know a lot others.
I think you guys missed something: on the beginning of the movie, Charlie says "you wouldn't think I was the weird kid who spent time in the hospital", he said that because he did spend time in the hospital. So when his brother asks about his mental health, it's because of this, he didn't know about aunt Helen behaviour.l

this is one of my favorite movies 💜 it's a gem! I love how we hear about Sam's past, but it's not mentioned I great detail, and you have to actually pay attention to notice how she has so much in common with his aunt, and that's maybe part of why he feels so deeply for her as someone he feels a need to save, when he couldn't save his aunt. But then there is also Charlie's past, of losing his best friend AND even thought he loved his aunt, and is sad about her death, he hasn't fully allowed himself to acknowledge what truly happened to him until he gets to the hospital. and once again, you have to pay attention. I know many people, and have watched many reactions to this movie, and a LOT of people miss the storyline of .. words I can't type on UA-cam. it's a beautiful movie that balance warmth, humor, and drama and hard traumatic topics. it's a really great movie. 💜
I’m a senior and did my book report on the book this year and the movie did an amazing job with the main themes but the book is 100x better because there is so much that the movie left out - this movie is one of my favorites
17:38 its actually been a tradition all over since the movie first came out in the 70s (longest nonstop theatrical run) People going to midnight showings go in costume with their own props or buy some at the venue, and a shadow cast play the characters down in front with their own skits and gags while the audience shouts at them and the screen. Def worth attending one if you ever get the chance

The book delves into even more serious stuff. Candace gets pregnant and doesn’t want the parents to know so Charlie takes her to “deal” with it. I think there’s something relatable in this movie for everyone whether it be depression, bullying, being gay, domestic violence, loneliness, studying and trying to get into your dream college, going to parties, etc.

I think a part that wasn't in the deleted scenes was Charlie witnessing a girl being SA'd at a party but didn't realize it until later, just adds to the pain that he keeps witnessing.

the abortion scene in the deleted scenes was really well done, actually, i wish people would react to the deleted scenes too because they are amazing, they should never have deleted those, it adds a lot to the movie and its already damn good
Fun Fact: This was shot in pittsburgh where I grew up. The house the character lived in was filmed on my street and I got to meet emma watson (got an autograph on my Deathly Hallows Book) and where they play football was my High School's stadium

You all got SO quiet when the premise of the movie hit. It was amazing seeing how deep into the movie you all got. This is one of those few movies in life you come across that drags you so deep into the lives, the love, and the hope a viewer can have for a character. I am shocked this movie has such a big following and such a little presence in entertainment history.

In the book Mr. Andersen visited Charlie after he got out of the hospital and invited him to his wedding! Such a good book and many plots that weren’t added due to time but added so much

Another great line is when Charlie says ,"I didn't think anyone noticed me," and patrick replied with,"We didn't think there was anyone cool left to notice." I feel like that sums up a lot of the high school experience when it comes to making friends, especially when starting at a new school or if you're super introverted.

same, this book was huge in my development. I remember my mom said I couldn't read it because it had a gay character but I got it from a friend anyways. When I finished it she found it in my room and read it in one night. I remember being worried she'd be mad but she gave back and said sorry. It was a huge development for her too

There's a entire 40 minutes that they cut from the film were they showed what happened to Charlie's best friend their friendship with the curly haired girl in the cafeteria and why she's the way she is now. And what happened to Charlie in the hospital. But I would suggest reading the book. But the movie is my all time favorite. We accept the love we think we deserve is the best line out of any movie.
I agree with the Oak, "We accept the love we think we deserve" is one of my favourite lines. It sums up why so many people stay in abusive relationships, because you always hear people go "why did they stay so long?" That's probably the main reason why. The way they reveal the plot twist with aunt Helen is so well done. Throughout the movie they give you bits and pieces but none of it makes you think that there was something dark and sinister going on. Also, The Answer made a good observation that everybody needed Charlie just as much as he needed them. They were all going through/had gone through something (usually by some form of abuse). And I haven't read the book but I know there is more about his friend who died by suicide there, it just didn't make it into the movie (which is understandable). Two were filmed though and is featured in the deleted scenes on the DVD: During the Secret Santa party in the official version, Charlie gives Patrick a piece of paper, but the extended version showed the paper contained a poem written by Charlie's friend. Also in the deleted scenes (that were in the book) is an alternate opening with Charlie and his family at the hospital, Charlie talking to Susan, Charlie's parents being told by Mr. Anderson that Candace is being abused by her boyfriend, to which his parents take direct intervention, and Charlie taking Candace to the clinic to have an abortion after she tells him she's pregnant (apparently everybody wanted to keep this scene but it was cut so it wouldn't be rated R and they wanted it to be targeted at a younger audience). The book is semi-autobiographical; Stephen Chbosky has said that he relates to Charlie but in many ways his high school experience was different. Other characters, like Sam and Patrick, are manifestations of people he has known throughout his life. Also, some people have trouble believing that the characters (especially Sam, a music fanatic) would not only not recognise David Bowie's Heroes but would not be able to discover its identity for such a long time. But Stephen Chbosky admitted that this was true to his own life as a teenager in the early 1990s (especially not being able to find the song since this was before the internet and Google).

The director wrote the book as well, in the late 90s. When you read the book you really feel close with Charlie’s letters, we’re like his “distant” best friend. I remember reading it and wanting friends like Sam, Patrick, Charlie and mr. Anderson
So glad you guys watched this. I share a lot of traits with Charlie and went through some pretty messed up stuff as a teenager, this film/book did such an amazing job at portraying how trauma can affect people, especially young people. I’m so glad this story was written.

This book saved my life. This film was nothing but a masterclass in storytelling and while soul crushing and beautifully heartbreaking the lessons of love, friendship, and therapy are SO IMPORTANT.

They have no toxic masculinity, they’re vulnerable and not afraid to show their emotions. They are amazing role models. Yes, these are hard topics, but life is hard sometimes and finding ways to cope is hard too. Other reactors may be afraid of showing emotion or may be embarrassed to shed a tear, but you three show your viewers that it’s okay to be vulnerable. We’re all human, and life is better when everyone is open minded and open hearted. The more emotional reaction videos you guys have made, are what made me a subscriber. After watching “The Impossible” with you guys, my entire perception of men changed because of you three. I never had a good father figure or male influence in my life, and I feel like this channel is healing that. I wish more men take some influence from you guys, and become more kind and empathetic.
P.s. “A walk to remember” is an amazing watch as well. A Nicholas Sparks film, a classic. Emotional, gritty, intense, and worth the watch.

I love this movie. The acting is incredible and beautiful storytelling. Ezra Miller is such a talented actor and it’s disappointing how far they have fallen. I hope one day they’re able to turn their life around. Great movie to watch during the holiday season. Happy holidays gents!

Same! I was really drawn to their acting and I watched this movie after everything about them came out. I was just really upset because they are so so talented and very magnetic with their acting so it was just really sad to see.
As an artist there's nothing worse to me than talented people throwing their talent away. To be that good at something and just squander if is very disappointing to see.

This came out a year before I started high school and it is THE definitive coming of age story for me. My friends and I made a ‘Tunnel Song’ playlist and we would sit around at Twilight every Friday after school and listen to it and talk about growing up. We learned the dance that Sam, Patrick and Charlie did to Come on Eileen and we still do it some times at parties when we’re feeling nostalgic. This movie means so much to me because like you said I was at the right age when it came out

I think Charlie reacting to his best friend was more of a reaction from someone who was used to holding in his emotions. Also, he was unexpectedly stoned at the same time so he couldn't fully feel the weight of what he was admitting to. He said I kind of wish he had left a note expressing that he never got a resolution about what happened.
Most people in his life didn't "show him much appreciation or consideration." I can't explain too much more than that if you intend to read the book though. He felt his Aunt cared about him the most out of everyone but she was also the person who hurt him the most.
This is such a beautiful and raw movie to watch. I think it encapsulates the high school life perfectly from the perspective of a "wallflower." I cried towards the end and knowing that people go through this everyday, both the good and the bad, makes me happy and infuriated at the same time. Glad you guys reacted to this.
I’m forty and an introvert. In high school some kids would feel sorry for me and try to befriend me. But they’d give up because I didn’t really respond much to conversation. I was just about to turn thirty when I met my best friend. And believe me I tried every possible way to ensure I made friends with them, including leaving my comfort zone. That’s where I found this story more relatable than when I read the book as a teenager. You’ll go out of your way when you find YOUR PEOPLE.
I remember reading the book when I was like 14/15 and then taking the book to the cinema 😂 for the screening I watched. The title of the tunnel song is never mentioned in the book so when I found out it was Heroes by David Bowie... The feeling I experienced was otherworldly. I absolutely adore this film and it was foundational for my teenage years.
Already watched the uncut version with you guys but this is one of my favorites (and top 3 favorite book ever) so I’m just here to run up the numbers & watch a few more times!

I completely agree with your take on how the movie had some really deep topics but they didn’t get too heavy with it to make the overall movie really daunting. In my perspective I think it really showcases like how so many people will be going thru some really heavy trauma but they still have to carry on with life, life still continues even with all the heavy trauma they have and that is what I interpreted from the way the scenes were shot and how it went from heavy to light hearted‼️
This novel and film are hugely important. Stand up against the book banners, y'all. These stories matter. Happy birthday, Charlie. ❤️
I've never read the book, but based on the movie I get a real sense of hopefulness. Despite all of the traumatic things which have happened to the characters, those points of levity and friendship, throughout the film, leave you with hope. Hope that Charlie and his friends will find their peace and move forward to a happier future.
i remember watching this movie for the first time as a freshman in high school and i still cry every time i watch it. It's so real and there's no sugar coating to how much pain a child can really go through, so much pain. At times you almost forget these are freshman and seniors in high school but those years, from 14-18 are so impactful. Still one of my favorite films.
This movie hit for me not as a teen myself flashbacking, but as the mother who had that teen that had zero friends. My oldest is Autistic & she had 3 friends in jr high, but they ended up going to diff achools for high school so she had to start her freshman yr w zero friends. The amount of worry & anxiety was at peak for me & few other things matched the fear i had for her. For 2 weeks straight shed come home w same nonverbal no smiles just very flat affect as some Autistic kids will have & then in week 3 everything changed. She almost was running into the house w the biggest smiles and talking so fast flapping her arms up & down as she will do in extreme excitement. And that thing that changed the life of my daughter was she met her friend. These girls had such a spark & connection that when they were together they could do anything, be anything, & were a force! The most amazing bond of friendship ive ever witnessed. You only need that one true friend & any more is just extra!!!❤💞❤️
This was my favourite movie as a teen but i didn't fully understand/connect with it until several years later when i went through a very long very deep spiral and was diagnosed with depression. I hadn't done anything but go to class, come home, and sit in my room alone for probably over a year maybe longer, and then one day i was miraculously feeling up to doing something so i came out of my room (my family looked at me like i had 3 heads) and decided to watch this movie. I remembered most of it but there were bits and pieces i had forgotten, and i just started weeping like a baby from the scene where everybody toasts him at the party all the way til the end of the movie. It was a catharsis i had never experienced before because Charlie made me feel seen in a way i hadn't been in years. If life was Inside Out it'd definitely be a core memory of mine.
Side note: the actress who plays Aunt Helen (Melanie Lynskey) also played Kathleen in episode 4&5 of The Last of Us
I quote the "we accept the love" line all the time to people who are in these crazy relationships where there is abuse, where there is neglect, where they are being walked all over, and they ask me should they stay or is it something wrong with them, and this quote is so relevant because its a two way street. Yes, no one deserves to be slapped across the face, but if you wake up tomorrow and you willingly go back to this person time and time again, you're bleeding and bruised, you're part of that cycle of abuse---you're confirming that this is where you think you deserve to be and be treated.
I relate to the awkwardness of the movie a lot too. I'm a true introvert. It takes me a while to warm up to people, and in high school, I walked in and quite literally stood against a wall hoping someone would say hello because I couldn't get myself to do it. The best part was finding my tribe, my people. We were awkward together. We literally were the only group of friends to have our own small table at the very front of the cafeteria. We felt special, and happy to be misfits together. Its 20 years later, and we're still in each others lives, went to college together, been through marriages, divorces, deaths, all of it, so there is hope if you're a wallflower, that you can find your people.
This is easily the most important movie I've ever seen. It broke me in ways i can't explain. I fucking love this movie so much.

This movie was basically my high school experience. I can relate to this movie on every level, even the worst parts. The book is stellar as well.
Never seen this movie before, but it sure took us on a very emotional journey hitting us with some heavy themes, sprinkled with bit of comedy to help us fully absorb everything in the story, all actors did a great job in their roles, nice movie. Quinn writing down the "Poetry writes me" line hehe & i liked what Quinn said that Charlie didn't have to change to make friends or get the girl, he was just himself & found 'his people' 🙂
I was 13 when this came out, and it felt like it was made for me at the time with what I went through as a kid. It’s such a weird experience being healed and an adult with my own kids now, but remembering how all of this felt at the time, and how I thought I would feel that way forever. To all the former wall flowers, we made it ❤

I remember watching this film in 2015, I loved the experience, a great and very deep and necessary film, I cried and was reflective about the plot
There are so many things that lead back to Aunt Helen's abuse of Charlie. The way Sam's hand on his thigh triggers memories of the abuse. The upset reaction he has to seeing his sister being slapped by Derek, hints at his own pity over Aunt Helen as a victim of domestic abuse and how that may have contributed to her own abusive streak. The way he almost appears to black out as he violently punches those boys beating up Patrick. At that point, his trauma from the abuse is manifesting into violent outbursts that could make him lethal, something which really frightens him. When his friends stay away from him after his truth or dare kiss, it's as if the loneliness of his abuse experience, his feelings of worthlessness, are being mimicked again through a new kind of loneliness. He finds a connection with Sam after she admits she was abused by her dad's boss, which he references when he says about them having been through similar things. He also acts naturally kind and puts others before him regularly, because Aunt Helen found sick, one sided relief in her abuse of Charlie, preying upon his innocence and sweet nature. It's almost as if that's the only way he knows how to be.

I don't think other actor would be able to pull that natural chemistry they have with each other! And Logan Lerman should have been nominated for Oscar cause he's performance here is really really good!
20:44 this quote really has hit me hard in so many ways. I have been single for 17 years and it wasn’t until I heard that quote that made me realize just why that is.
I think this is an excellent movie that I have recommended many times.
I figured the "best friend" was another damaged kid he had met when he was hospitalized for his mental breakdown before high school, but that kid wasn't able to overcome, maybe lacked the support system Charlie had of a loving family and good friends.
(I could relate to this story as I had a miserable, horrible family life that made me suicidal. I wouldn't have survived without my good friends and boyfriend in high school and beyond).
Some of this movie made me think of another excellent movie with heavy themes, Ordinary People (1980).
I remember when I was younger everyone used the quote “we accept the love we think we deserve” it was all over social media like tumblr lol!! Even my social media bios were “love always, Charlie”
I always say this, but as much as I love the "we accept the love we think we deserve" quote, nothing hits harder than "you can't just put other people ahead of yourself and think that counts as love." Now that, that line changed my life.

One of my most disliked characters in this movie is Craig and the thing that irks me a lot is how he refused to go to one of Sam’s school dances cause he thought it was “lame” yet dates a high school student 🤦♀️ I love the book, it’s just as amazing as the movie. I saw this movie in theatres when it came out (I was 16 about to turn 17) and read the book immediately after.
This movie is based on a book. The book is really good. It is written letter style. He is writing letters to himself as a way to vent. And you get a little more in the book then you do the movie. But I love the way they made this movie

The movie did great in following the book because the man who wrote the book produced the movie.
However, the book is written as a series of letters, just like the movies started. We are reading for all purposes a young adults journal. Although the movie and the book are SO similar, I strongly suggest you read it to get the full life like context.
It is a fairly short book and a fast read.

I absolutely love this movie and the book. Thankfully I never had the same situation that Charlie did with his aunt, but watching my father and step-father die in hospice made me very familiar with his flashback situation. There would be months where when I would try to sleep, I'd have my dad's face stuck in the center of my mind, the cornered rabbit terror in his eyes when they took off the oxygen, his eyes staring into me as he passed, my step-mom jerking his head away after he had already started to stiffen up so she could kiss his forehead more easily, that sallow shade of yellow gray he turned. I couldn't make it go away so I would have panic attacks every night for months. But at least I have the comfort in knowing that he knew I was there until his final breath, I can't imagine how much worse it would be for Charlie.
I read this book in my grade 12 English class and we watched the movie at the end of the unit. I never really went through such drastic events as Charlie but my overall school experience (especially secondary school) wasn't too nice and I can really relate to him in many ways. Particularly, this story made me realize I myself was a wallflower kind of person and I finally had a concise way to describe what I'm like. And several of the moments and reveals in the story hit me like an absolute freight train and I absolutely love this story for it. Thank you guys for making this video and sharing your thoughts❤
You should watch the deleted scenes! They add so much to the best friend plotline and add some plotlines that have been cut from the movie which in the book are very important.

I’m no psychologist but I have an understanding that sometimes when people experience traumatic situations like Charlie did as a kid with his aunt, it can be so traumatic the brain blocks it out. It’s not till later on in life you get snippets, flash backs, details you missed. It’s as if the brain is saying you’re ready to deal with this now or you know what this means at the point in your life and so it’s time to unpack this. Or, in Charlie’s case, you carry so much of everyone else’s secrets and pain that the stress and upset can trigger it. I think the film does a really good job of showing that. I might be wrong but it just seemed like he was understanding it and piecing it all together as we - the audience were.
As one of the many people recommending it, I’m so glad you guys watched this. One of the reasons I love this movie is how relatable and real the characters are. I especially relate to Charlie as I love writing, am fiercely loyal, was without friends for a long period of my life, was hospitalized for trying to end myself my first year of high school, and was abused by a female relative (my mom). I like that this movie spotlights a female abuser because most people think it’s only males and also highlights a male victim.

This movie (and the book) is so powerful and it really sticks with you, especially if you've had a difficult school experience, or can relate to many of the difficult topics that are brought up, but it's still such a heartwarming story. It really deserve all the praise and should get more recognition that it does.

This movie I watched before but can’t put myself through again so watching you guys react is great I can enjoy this movie without it putting me back into a bad place thanks for putting out this reaction and helping me and I’m sure other people watch through it.
People look to Media to gather shared experiences, and a lot of movies don't do a good job in portraying highschool. This movie does it amazing. Superbad is one of the only other movies I can think of that REALLY gets the idea and feeling of being in highschool. They are two different experiences and point of views and this one is just so surreal and raw and deep. Very relatable for me and I know a lot others.
I think you guys missed something: on the beginning of the movie, Charlie says "you wouldn't think I was the weird kid who spent time in the hospital", he said that because he did spend time in the hospital. So when his brother asks about his mental health, it's because of this, he didn't know about aunt Helen behaviour.l
This movie had a tonnnn of deleted scenes! I believe they filmed one with the best friend before he died and lotssss of heavy scenes with his sister and a whole pregnancy plot line they cut
I think this is one of the really excellent adaptations of a book, and stays very true to the book as well, which is a rare double hit combo
this is one of my favorite movies 💜 it's a gem! I love how we hear about Sam's past, but it's not mentioned I great detail, and you have to actually pay attention to notice how she has so much in common with his aunt, and that's maybe part of why he feels so deeply for her as someone he feels a need to save, when he couldn't save his aunt. But then there is also Charlie's past, of losing his best friend AND even thought he loved his aunt, and is sad about her death, he hasn't fully allowed himself to acknowledge what truly happened to him until he gets to the hospital. and once again, you have to pay attention. I know many people, and have watched many reactions to this movie, and a LOT of people miss the storyline of .. words I can't type on UA-cam.
it's a beautiful movie that balance warmth, humor, and drama and hard traumatic topics. it's a really great movie. 💜
I’m a senior and did my book report on the book this year and the movie did an amazing job with the main themes but the book is 100x better because there is so much that the movie left out - this movie is one of my favorites

17:38 its actually been a tradition all over since the movie first came out in the 70s (longest nonstop theatrical run) People going to midnight showings go in costume with their own props or buy some at the venue, and a shadow cast play the characters down in front with their own skits and gags while the audience shouts at them and the screen. Def worth attending one if you ever get the chance
Love this movie and your reaction to it. Great sound track. Many common topics for young people, and SA is a lot more common than we would like to think.
This is my favorite book of all time! and fun fact, very sadly this book is frequently banned at schools because of the heavy topics but I think it’s such an amazing read and movie that everyone should see or watch growing up

POBAW has been my favorite movie and book for years now and it seems not everyone reacts to or let alone knows it exists, so I'm so glad for this upload! It might be odd given the content, but it's a comfort movie for me so this is the best Christmas present ^^

watching this the night on Christmas Eve and I didn’t think I’d cry over this movie again but this movie truly emphasizes the importance of having a loving family and great friends 😭
One of my all time favorite books and this is one of the rare times that the movie is just as good! Logan Lerman is such and underrated actor and ezra Miller was great in this.
