Talking Watches With Kevin Rose

- Kevin Rose co-founded Digg in his early twenties, and went on to become a staple of the original dot com era. Since, he's become a storied angel investor, placing capital into the likes of companies that I think might really be onto something - companies like Twitter, Square, Uber, and Facebook. His track record as an investor was so strong that Google asked him to join Google Ventures, where he has led the investment in several companies, including Blue Bottle Coffee. Recently, Rose took his mobile chops to the horological space by launching watch news aggregator Watchville. But did you really think he'd be this into watches without owning a few nice pieces himself? This is Talking Watches with Kevin Rose. For the full story, go to: www.hodinkee.co...
The story about his father's Rolex is the absolute most organic way to get into this hobby. What a great story.
Neat to hear Ben geek out in this episode. You can tell he really enjoyed the conversation.
I definitely like the more conversational style in this one.
When I first watched this in 2014, it was the first time I had ever heard the words: A. Longe & Sohne. Since then, it has been my obsession to one day own one. Still chasing that dream.
love how benjamin actually got invested into the discussion rather than throwing in formulaic questions, was fun to see
"im fp curious". that made me laugh
Ben, can we see your watch collection? Please...
watch the coolhunting video.
Holy smokes I didn't expect such a gem of an episode...
Ben's prediction on vintage Rolex appreciation aged fantastically well.
Indeed! I was looking for that comment :D
His comments about the future of the apple watch were pretty accurate
I love revisiting this and seeing how many watches he has with leather straps and dressy type pieces. If you watch these episodes the last 3 years or so and now its now all stainless steel or hype pieces from Rolex, Patek, AP. This type of video is why I fell in love with watch collecting.
I love watching peoples interest start and take hold. Kevin clearly is just starting out on his journey. I wonder in 10 years time will he look back at his current collection and wonder why he bought certain watches, much like John Mayer did.
Well said - I certainly don't like the same watches I had 10 years ago, or like the same music 10 years ago, etc. I would hope people change over such a large period of time. But for now, this is great- he purchases and researches what he likes now/what he anticipates what will be great.
I was in love with the large watch thing upon getting into watches, now I love the 33-35mm vintage range (maybe due to my slender wrists). It's humbling to hear he's first starting into the collecting bug, rather than to claim he knows it all.
Probably my favorite Talking Watches episode
I knew this interview was going to happen. I could feel it in my bones.
Another great one Ben!
Now that's a true collector.. Vintage rolex6,patek and then swatch.. As he rightly said it's the engineering which he respects rather than brand name and swatch has a major role in reviving the watch industry in 90s
Kevin Rose calling his shot on the AppleWatch is pretty cool actually. I hate notifications on my wrist; I only have an AppleWatch for workouts.
What makes this great is that Ben is sharing his opinions in this piece
I really love the Ressence design. It's so unique. I would love to own a Type 3 one day.
I love the dial of that Date Just! The Ressence though, always get's me.
Hah! I had no idea KR was a collector. I've been following him since the early screensaver's days. Being a CCIE I really enjoy mechanical watches and collecting. An appreciation for quality automatic watches is something I have noticed will a lot of my colleagues in the IT community.
The dial on his dad's Rolex is awesome.
Standard Hodinkee Watch Talk
Interviewee: I'm such a watch guy. I love watches. Here's 5 Rolexs, an AP, 2 Pateks and a wildcard (Journe, JLC, Lange etc). I bought them because everyone else said to.
Talk about a BSD contest. These guys were going at each other with their watch knowledge.
Finally, someone with some different watches. Really like the Langes.
9:50 pretty prophetic insight regarding the Watch. Everything he mentioned, now in 2020, the Watch does. Glucose levels are around the corner I’m sure.
I would love to see an interview of a real person. Watches bought by a guy who makes 50K a year. There are plenty of guys that make $40/hour and they love watches....and they dont own a Patek. Please give me a break...
+jason starek
But you forget at the very least you HAVE to own a $5000+ watch according to these guys to be considered a real collector.
Every collector has to have a Patek? Oh just bugger off, so delusional.
alex h No, every collector does NOT need to own a Patek....that's exactly the point I was making. Lot's of regular guys collect watches. Owning a lot of expensive stuff isn't what makes someone a collector, passions does. And lot's of guys are very passionate about their collection...and many of those collection (while not uber expensive) are quite interesting and exotic.
Jason, I was agreeing with you. I was being sarcastic and making fun of them along with you. :)
+jason stares the majority of those guys own eta base movements its basicly the same movement on a bunch of watches patek is in house and take a long time to develop rolex and brands like that are appreciated for their accomplishments like the gmt function, date, and daydate. they're also a bit more expensive it all comes down to what you like and what you can afford i don't own a patek or have a watch collection i just simply have a casio and citizen that i enjoy wearing but i do hope that one day i own a nice piece like a jlc or so
eddy pozo Thanks for the basic intro to horology. Yes, I know Rolex, Patek, VC, AP, etc. are in-house movements... My point is that a watch is more than simply a status symbol...it's a story (see John Meyer's video...it's fantastic). Most of these seem to be the same sort of collection over and over again. All these guys are multi-millionaires with rare Pateks. I'd just like to see more 'average guy' collections. Yes, that collection would likely include several pieces with ETA movements, but that's perfectly fine with me. My point is I'd just like to see more stories (my first automatic, the watch I bought when I graduated b-school, the watch I received for my 25th anniversary, the watch my father gave me, etc) and less of these "check it out, I'm rich and a I bought a bunch of watches that all look the same but are slightly different and rare." I totally understand collecting rare, one-of-a-kind pieces, and sometimes those are very expensive, but would just like to see more collections from averaged enthusiasts.
This is one of the best episodes.
I'm a vintage guy, from the vintage age. I love vintage Rolexes, a lot of my dad's watch 'likes' are mine. Great interview, although Patek's are out of my league, exception is my JLC Reverso (my grail). Thank you for a stimulating, informative discussion.
His nicest watch was his dads datejust in my opinion
Totally, and he had to go and talk about an Apple watch.
Gary dacre That 5970 was a looker also
over the Lange? braindead much bro?
He doesn’t own the 5970, just said it was a grail
juke box clearly you haven’t understood the point of watches. But don’t worry, one day you will
This guy puts my thoughts on smartwatches into words really well
You can't change the battery on an Apple watch so they have built in obsolescence. After a few years they become a shiny brick.
Exactly. Plus the battery's charge doesn't even last a day. And when it's dead all you have is a shiny black lego brick. Zero collection value.
OMG hodinkee (watches) and my favorite KR together. how come i see this only now
Second best talking watches episode. JM being the first.
The Ressence type 3 is unreal. I would love to own that timepiece one day. Big fan of what Ressence are doing.
I think it's actually the new Type 1 in black. Amazing watch none the less. The new design without the crown is killer.
That's a crazy dial on that Rolex!
ben please show us your collection...
love this series !
Soooo tired of Rolex and Patek. They mean little to 99.8% of the population. People that collect for investment lack the passion that I like to see.
Totally agree, the word Rolex is normally mentioned in the first sentence of these videos. Soooooo tired of it. People will tell me to stop watching then, but i live in hope.
100pc
Agree with this.
Rolex and patek yawn fest
Because they aren't really into watches. They get money, research watches and find out other people say to buy these things.
The doctor with 1000 Pateks, including one never worn, is about the most stupid thing ever.
Keep crying buddy, just sour cz u have no chance of affording those watches. Now go back to your 9 to 5 job in your toyota and hate on the rich otw.
Haha watching this in 2021 and hearing 150k "Newman Daytona is a bubble" sounds pretty hilarious :D
And he also totally predicted the functions and strengths of the Apple Watch :O
A collection of watches means something different to each owner. I have Tudor's and I also have a Swatch and everything above and below. I love the vintage side. There are lots of enjoyable vintage watches at a great price. Just because you will never own a Rolex does not mean you will never be a collector. Buy what you love and enjoy it. What ever watch you want but cannot afford there is a half price equal with out the brand name. Tudor and Rolex are the most popular of sister brands. Look for movements not brands. Collect what you love, not what everyone else's says to collect. A vintage seiko is just as relevant as a vintage Heuer.
"...stuff that I wouldn't care if it got banged around and stuff like that. The first one is this Panerai here", shows the watch that costs $10k+Yeah, right.
you look like brothers

Who remembers Kevin on The Screen savers after Leo Laporte , Patrick Norton ...the good ole days.
Blue bottle siphon, best coffee I ever had in San Fran!
this is my favourite episode .. the ressence is so beautiful
Need a round 2!
Damn this guy predicted the EKG function of the Apple Watch!
Great collection!!!
if Apple were to design a watch it would be a Braun... like everything else they copied.
What's with the audio? Forgot the clip mics for Kevin?
I don't know where to begin with those vintage submariners - I really like the one in this video, subtle colors and subdued overall. Which ref is most collectible? Which years? etc etc ... thanks.
You can't go wrong with a Submariner 5513, go for a 1970s model, best bang per buck! A true classic.
Comex
great story, love this series.
What is the model of his father's Rolex? That's a seriously good looking piece.
Hi, can anyone please tell what Kevin Rose is wearing on his left hand?
Love his collection.
Swatch is in the collection too...=]
This aged well. Not sarcastically either. It literally aged well. This dude has great instincts, if not the Midas touch.
any one know the reference number of the submariner shows at the beginning of the video please ?
This is how I talk watches with old friends.
the patek 5970's price is above 150k wtf
"I didn't need to have a watch on my wrist to tell time ... " Said no one ever!
I bought a second hand Nixon watch with a wide leather cuffstrap style (70s style retro looking) for £10 absolute bargain and looks good
Whats the name of the black and white watch with arms that never cross?
ahpadt Ressence Type 1
Thomas Andersen
Yeah, figure it out in the meantime. Pretty cool watch. Shame about the astronomical price.
a lange zeitwerk takes the cake for me, easily
I agree with a lot of Kevin Rose's thoughts
Do they make a watch you can flip so you can wear the open back as a face?
I think best thing about collecting watches is the search& hunt
what kind of dial is that on the Datejust?
where is that jacket from that Clymer's wearing in the beginning?
"... and for your second Lange..." oh come on now
This is just too good!
talking watches... thats just my thing!!!
Very good interview.
Love all the hodinkee episodes except this one. Still hit the like button though.
5k sub lol!! Times have really changed!
Pick up a Milsub (with discharge papers)...Sword Hands baby! From there pick up a Comex SeaDweller. Throw in a Tiffany's Rolex Red Sub, Double Red SeaDweller and Big Crown Submariner and I think you have a lot of the vintage Rolex Stuff covered.
It must be great to have such deep pockets:)
What is the name/model of his father's rolex? It looks beautiful
Andrew Koh Its a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Two Tone, on Jubilee bracelet. I'm not sure on the dial colour, I've never seen one like that before.
5-10k won’t get you many vintage subs 6 years on! My birth year 14060 cost 10k usd. A 5513 now - 15k. So... well done Ben you were right!
Keep posting. Love the videos.
"I guarantee it!" Did the patek receipt say that in 50 years time, it will be worth more? (adjust for inflation) plus it is a commodity, it is merely a figure someone is willing to pay to own it, not its true worth value that determines its price..this is of course coming from a peasant like myself who earns less than the price of a patek annually
He's talking about just the perpetual calendar chronographs, which all the previous PP ones are now worth many folds its original rrp (adjusted for inflation). : )
alvin teo
That Patek looks like a lang sohne
Sylvester Stallone "Talking Watches" would be CRAZYYYY
I picture him with a lot of gaudy oversized bling
That's perculiar! I also have a Swatch Sistem51 in my collection and also just now uploaded a video of it too. :D
I wonder where I would keep a collection like this, if I could afford one? I'd always be concerned about safety.
Most people know him from his dig days? Nah, I would say most people have no idea who this guy is.
does anyone know the ref on the sub at 6:44?
And then he became Hodinkee CEO
Great episode, Kevin get Watchville on Android soon!
john mayer has the best collection.
of girlfriends
became the CEO of Hodinkee after the merger
The watch culture is interesting, it made up of people who enjoy horology and believe that it something to be enjoyed by all and the sharing of beauty design and function. The other camp is very highbrow and believe that you have to own Rolex, Patek, AP and the such and if you don't have lot of money and aren't wearing the correct watch or clothing your trash.
+Angelo Brown True. The people that want to be high-brow about it typically don't have great taste, as the desire to flaunt elbows out the desire to own and appreciate a piece with a certain design that speaks to the individual, that meets a function that bookmarks a time and place in history.
kevin rose just bugs the living hell out of me
That's pretty contradictory by definition
You can still be a douche but not vocal. If you come to the Silicon Valley, you'll meet plenty of them.
commandcenter well said, sounds like mark Twain penned it.
Kevin Rose - the guy who made reddit big.
Hello Hodinkee How about a "Talking watches" with P Diddy I will bet he has a crazy collection
Black musicians/sports stars etc tend to have the worst watch collections. Usually customised in some shitty Beverly Hills place and gawdy as hell.
Vintage Rolex sports watches for 5000-10000$? Is Ben on ...
This was back in like 2014 when you could actually buy a steel rolex
So... Black leather, then?
This guy likes high complication watches for the same reason I do, for their pioneering engineering than history, ofcourse history is important too.
i fucking love blue bottle coffee.
spot on
