Historic Moment as King Charles Receives Bank Notes Featuring His Portrait

- The King welcomed Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey to Buckingham Palace, who presented him with the first bank notes featuring his portrait as monarch. The portrait of His Majesty which appears on the notes is based on a portrait that was provided by the Palace to the Bank of England.
How exciting! I hadn't realized that QEII was the first monarch on the notes and so this is the first time changing pictures to a different monarch. They're lovely.
Yah that’s wild! I didn’t know that either. I wonder when Canada’s notes will change. The late Queen was only on our $20 though in the past, she was on $1 and $2 dollar notes but those were changed to coins
@@graphiquejack He will be on our $20.00 bill again - Trudeau announced that some while ago, but I've not seen any sample copies yet. We've actually had images on the monarch on our banknotes for much longer than the Brits have. Until 1934, the banknotes were issued by various banks, so they weren't standard, but some did feature images of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and the early reign of King George V. The Bank of Canada took over and standardized everything, with their first notes being released in 1935. They were quite an attractive set, with King George V being featured on the dollar bill, and other royals on higher denominations, including Queen Mary, Princess Mary, the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), the Duke of York (later King George VI), the Duke of Gloucester (father of the current Duke) and a very attractive $20.00 bill featuring Princess Elizabeth at eight years old. That particular one is worth an insane amount of money these days. I'm not fortunate enough to own any from the 1935 series, but I do own one dollar and two dollar bills from the 1937 series, which featured King George VI that my father gave me.
From what I've read, the King's great grandfather, George V appeared on some notes as early as 1914.
@@retroguy9494 I would imagine he showed up on a number of banknotes from that period. Prior to 1934, in addition to the Dominion of Canada banknotes, a slew of chartered banks were issuing banknotes too, although they were a bit restricted as to the denominations they could issue. Many of them had images of the royals on them. George V wasn't the first British royal on a banknote, though. The earliest one I've tracked down so far is a pre-confederation banknote issued by the Gore Bank of Hamilton in the Province of Upper Canada sometime around 1837 showing William IV. The first I could find for Queen Victoria was one issued by the Colonial Bank of Canada in 1859. It must have been strange with all these different banknotes from the chartered banks. I was quite surprised to find out that while they were gradually withdrawn after 1934 that they didn't lose legal tender status until 1950. And yes, I've had a lot of fun digging around the net for these. The Bank of Canada Museum has a considerable collection of them, and a lot of images are posted online.

Must be said that even for Charles it must be a strange moment seeing HIS picture on the money.His mum will flash through his mind.
I'm not sure if he's in the habit of carrying cash but you've made a really good point. Probably a very poignant moment for him.
I always wondered how he felt the moment everyone suddenly stopped calling him "Your Royal Highness" and started calling him "Your Majesty" and even more, the first time he heard "God Save the _King_ " in his honor. I mean, I suppose you could imagine that moment for 70 years or so, but when it really happens, it still must come as a bit of a shock. I remember when I enrolled in the university and for the first time was called "Mr." with my family name, instead of teachers using my first name. I couldn't imagine why they expected my father to be there. Hesitated in responding for a split second until I realized I had achieved "Misterhood".

The Duke of York served in combat during the Falklands War. The Duke of Sussex served in action in Afghanistan. How much more proof of courage from "him and his family" do you want?

Before 1960, we had Britannia, seated and facing on one side on our banknotes, rather than a portrait of the Sovereign. On the other side we had images of two gold sovereigns, with the reverse showing in each case, that is, with Pistrucci’s depiction of St. George and the Dragon.

I would like to see a £100 note with Elizabeth II on the other side to Charles III. We should go back to using cash more often, stop the greedy banks from getting a cut every time you make a transaction.

The irony is I will probably never see them in person as I tend to pay by debit card for everything now. Some places won't even take cash now!
Especially in London. In some places you cant even buy ice cream without card. I personally like paying cash.

THE QUEEN was the first SOVEREIGN to appear on the British banknotes! Wow! In Canada, King George the Fifth appeared on our banknotes. Even King Edward--Queen Victoria's son--appeared on Canadian banknotes.
