EAW is quality wise similar to OWB. Both are related to an IP that not everyone knows extensively about. And both do a good job of making it so you don't actually need to know the IP to get the full experience of it. To the point I'd argue that both of them have more non canon things then canon things to their IP. (EAW gives two whole new continents for god sake).
As a person who hated on Equestria at war because it's my little pony, like duh. Then got convinced to try it and man the mod is amazing. Hate the show but the world building and focus trees are top notch. So many fun and wacky memes spread throughout it. Would recommend giving it a shot.
The world building might be the worst part about it. There's lots that's really dumb or really uninspired, or both (cough cough basically all of Equus).
TNO also has the Kaisserreich rework problem, but like 10x worse. The plans they make deliberately are trying to remove the traditional war gameplay of HoI4, and by that point - without the solid warfare framework - the game would be better off as its own indie game, because right now in any story-focused TNO path you are constantly interrupted by having to build random crap, research more pointless things, and manage your factories, which is very unfun. And the new plans also are taking out much of the original vision of TNO. TNO started as this pulpy, grimdark universe based on goofy b-movies about the Nazis, and I really loved that concept. Modern TNO wants to be more realistic alternative history, and so they want to remove Burgundy and the German Civil War, rework America to have the Democrats and Republicans again, get rid of the whacky paths in Russia and more. Also progress is ridiculously slow, they've removed more content in the past like two years than they've added.
A standalone alt-history cold war game based on TNO's Lore would definitely sell, I like the turn they are taking regarding the lore but I get your point of view. After the whole lore incident back in 2021 with Pinkpanzer they had to take a drastic turn.
@@skinwalker69420 That would be terrific, but it's quite unlikely since there's so much more work which goes into most TNO nations with their special GUIs and mechanics, but it would be great.
They should've officially devoted themselves to porting the mod over to Victoria 3, which a fan did. A while ago, I thought that the developers were suffering from the same issue of the design incompatibility that faced East vs. West, and this comment seems to vindicate my assumption. As much grief as I have given Victoria 3, it is a great canvas to convey and abstract contemporary warfare and depict political economy in conjunction with geopolitics, following the footsteps of the Cold War Project.
EaW is the best mod made for this game. Like by all objective metrics. It doesn't screw with the combat system but only adds upon it, every country with a focus tree is great except ironically like countries in Equestria (because a lot of the content is very old), even a bad EaW focus tree can beat most vanilla trees, the world building and lore is very good, never watched MLP but understood everything I needed to know just from the events and focus descriptions. They even have a lore wiki book thing integrated into the province UI to let you know about the history of each province. EaW and OWB have the advantage of having an entirely different setting untethered from reality, that allows for far more creativity than other mods.
I think most people who play EAW have no interest or knowledge in MLP and just downloaded it because it just is an incredibly absurd concept. A ton of people stay after trying it as a joke, simply because it's just an incredibly well thought out mod. I personally also have no interest in MLP in general, but the mod works without it, since most of the text you can read isn't integral to the gameplay. The focus trees take the best parts of base HOI4 focuses and make them even crazier having options like getting a literal God as your leader, starting a hive mind cult, mind controlling the entire world, and many more. The game has so much more late game content and is also optimized to be played later on, due to more limited manpower pools. Also there is a RAT! Arguably the best introduction to the mod are the April Fools focus trees that you can activate, since they encapsulate the sheer insanity this mod has to offer. In particular the "Twilight Theory" path of Equestria is just absolutely crazy.
Cold War: Iron Curtain is actually incredible right now and much closer to Kaiserreich in quality (not quite there, but could get there in time) than you may expect.
It is. The only thing setting it back is the small dev team. Theyre like 10 of them pushing through this massive 50+ year mod with content and mechanics.
I agree that it is very incredible for a small team, but at the same time, i believe the stupid amount of research (like rocketry for african states???) should be just removed. the functions are amazing but for minor countries theyre literally cluttering it
Developer for Extremis Ultimis here. We're NOT a Warhammer 40K mod, but we do like grimdark edgy bs. We currently have a demo on Steam that doesn't work with the current version of HOI4. Someone made a Redux version that does work, but it's apparently unstable. We're working on a second demo which we hope to have out in the next few months. As for what the mod is about, it's basically Millennium Dawn mixed with a pulp cyberpunk setting. An alternative 2020s where there's things like power armor and supersoldiers running around.
My boyfriend works on Red World and the mod has been getting a lot of content and updates over the last year or so. I think it would be a great mod to revisit in November :3 I could ask my partner what paths he’d recommend playing. edit: he recommends “uapr pacific america kamala harris path”
17:33 Whoever told you Europe in Flames is laggy and complex lied to you, I play it in in mp with 5 people across the globe and can get to 1939 in about an hour and the additions are comparable to Road to 56 tech additions. Mod is great its really optimized for MP with more simple additions and new trees (even if not all are built as good as another).
EAW is a great mod, the 2 main reason i think it quite good is it basically vanilla + some extra technology and genuinely good storywriting. Since the world is so big with many nation to choose from, you have basically all the starting scenario you would usually wanted. There is a mod for EAW that turn everyone into human so you can deponified it if you don't like the pony that much, i personally keep it on since i kinda enjoy the original art style more than the human version. Not a brony but i do enjoy what the developer have created, i can see why it on top of the ranking for those who have played it. It abit hard to get into if you really hated the pony but otherwise it would playing. I would put it as my third favourite mod, second being RT56 because im used to it and OWB being my No.1 cuz the dev cook a 4 course meal.
IMO, a part of the reason why EAW works so well is that it’s a fantasy setting. A lot of ahistorical stuff is hard to convincingly justify in a realistic setting and I think a lot of mods (and vanilla) suffer because of this through no fault of their own, simply because it’s difficult to suspend your disbelief while playing. EAW, on the other hand, works perfectly for any “ahistorical” path because it’s entirely fantasy and its lore is not bounded by the boring rules of reality. Virtually all paths make as much sense as any other
@@electric5078 Well pretty much all alternative history mod is fantasy. The thing with EAW isn't it fantasy element, it "ahistorical" path is still just as ahistorical relative to EAW and MLP lore. It just the way the writing interconnected that make EAW world feel more connected. Arguably a ahistorical earth with entirely new nation and completely different lore still can be very much enjoyable, it just need to actually need to be connect one way or another.
Especially agree on the Millenium Dawn: Had a game with Croatia, was about to reform Austria Hungary when my saves corrupted, tried 2 more times and my saves kept corrupting after 20 years of playing
EAW literally has a whole continents of other species other than ponies, like griffons and zebras. Ok I see the point why, but try the griffons at least once.
ISP, we hold nothing against you for not playing EAW cause you're not into ponies. But it is an amazing overhaul mod that's worth checking out purely cause you don't need to give a shit about ponies to become a tyrannical sun god and commit war crimes in the name of peace and harmony.
Red Flood is getting a massive rework soon that’s going to add and rework a lot of stuff, particularly France and Fiume, but there’s no telling when it’s coming
I think you handled EaW in a very respectful way. And it would be very un-brony to be mad at someone and not respect their preferences. ^_^ So that's all very fair of you. ... It's still a good mod. >.>
7:25 there is a east coast mod called east coast rebirth. It’s really good. There’s also one that adds the Midwest called rustbelt rising (no content though) and one for for Florida called fountain of dreams. All of them are good.
If you get a compatibility mod you can get all of those plus Cuba on the same map working together, though everything east of Texas still has no content outside Cuba itself
i talked with the east coast rebirth devs and theyre kinda stupid imo, a lot of lore inaccuracies and grammar mistakes, the devs refuse to accept writers on their team because theyre elitist when it comes to lore knowledge (call back to the lore errors in their mod) and they will time people out for even asking about being a writer
Red flood is one of my favorites if not my favorite mod conceptually, but until the france rework comes out in 2030 there's not much point in bothering with it outside of the russian warlords or red germany. As for removed content, i'm pretty sure it was only anprim france and an unfinished prussia tree that wasnt supposed to be in the mod.
I find the whole futurism thing very interesting . Conceptually the Red Flood world is very fascinating. I downloaded it quite recently and probably have only played about 5 hours of it though. Did they also remove the Italian Shogunate or have I made that up?
@@charles-pn5uf Shimoi's path still has content it was just renamed from the italian shogunate to something else I believe. But spain and italy are also being updated with the france rework so I'm not sure what they'll do with it then.
I can wholeheartedly recommend both Darkest Hour (historical detail mod) and Extremis Ultimis (schizo “what if a bunch of edgy people started an american civil war” alt-history)
I have zero clue what MLP lore is even about but EaW does a good job explaining the parts you actually need to play the mod, and mechanically it's superb. You should see it as a project entirely separate from the series itself, and more mostly inspired by it (I'm sure the actual fans can notice a million little references I missed but it didn't affect my enjoyment of it I think(
Novum Vexillum is honestly a much better alternative to Millenium Dawn. I’ve had a lot of fun playing Poland recently. On top of that, New Ways has gotten very good and is up there among my favorite mods. I highly suggest playing through Germany, Denmark, or Portugal.
Nah, it's crap. You just say that because it's the only alternative to Millennium Dawn. That's why you arent looking at it objectively. It deserves the Awful tier alongside MD, but at least MD has content and a good influence mechanic. Novum Vexillum has 0 stuff in it, and the stuff that there is, its rubish. The chinese focus tree, my God, its a blatant plagiarism of the vanilla Soviet Focus Tree. Pathetic!
@@Lady_Amelia-Eloise The New ways team removed the base game Focus trees for most Major nations and gave them Generic Focuses. Although the mod has its own Enormous Generic focus tree, I liked the base game ones more. iirc only France, Germany and Italy have unique focus trees
Say what you want about Kaiserredux, I think it's one of the best mods for HOI4. To build off of an already beloved mod, turn it to the extremes and take it seriously is incredibly fun. Almost all nations have a unique focus tree with multiple paths, leading to so much replayability. Whether you're choosing the multiple sane to insane paths for a nation or watching from afar as a different country. I have never had a KX playthrough feel the same. Everytime I load up KX i struggle to pick what nation and path I want to take, and that's awesome. I love when a mod compacts so many new and different submods and ideas and makes it work so well, and the devs are still adding onto an already jam packed mod. KX will forever be in my heart.
My experience with TNO, did absolutely no army management, went through a focus tree and gained territory through the focuses. Read fifty billion event pages which was from the 1st person perspective of the "ruler" of the country but sometimes it was just narrative. Ended up completing all the focuses early because the AI took some other path and I couldn't continue my focus but I couldn't see what happened because that focus hadn't unlocked yet.
I played speer into good guys path few years back for Germany, it was a great story like solid 8,5/10 would love to just read it. Though yeah, literally barely any HoI4 to be seen (or gameplay). Still probably the best story I saw in HoI4.
@@warlordofbritannia Someone here came up with a great idea. It would be fantastic in Victoria 3, and it's focus on politics and economy. HoI4 is just a very good combat game, it's a shame to not use any of it.
@@warlordofbritannia In its early days it still had enough resemblance to base Hoi4 that it made sense as a mod, but since then they’ve added countries with only narrative events, added a stupid economy system, and they’ve been reworking things to minimize actual gameplay as much as possible. The devs probably would try and make their own game of it... if they didn’t know that the direction they’re taking the mod is unpopular. No ones going to follow them to an independent project, especially not when it would give the devs free reign to butcher the setting as much as they want

Red Flood should have been on top. I get the mod's main appeal was "haha wouldnt it be totally wacky and schizo if this guy was actually evil and somehow had enough support to take over a country???" but them getting rid of more nonsensical shit doesnt mean theyre making it "realistic", it just means they wont be doing "hey this guy is evil and also totally schizo even though in real life he was normal" and instead they will be making their "wacky" stuff actually bearable, for example Khlebnikov.

Bronies (and furries in general) somehow make the most random things ultra high-quality and with loads of development (I remember a D&D and Pathfinder Pony fan supplement, and it was pretty solid).
yes, there is a medical diagnosis available to these people, it is called autism. Unfortunately, until a cure is found, Bronies will continue to spend 80 hours a week indulging their special interest, by creating a high quality mods for games.
Others have already said this, but disregarding the surface appearance, EaW is one of the deepest, most varied, most comprehensive, and most frequently updated mods for the game. If you can ignore the ponies etc. it's really only skin-deep, the gameplay underneath rivals or exceeds mods like KR.
At 7:25 there is an East Coast sub mod that has content for Raven Rock and Lyon’s Chapter. It also works well if you have Rustbelt Rising and ERX installed
As a staunch OWB player and supporter I would love so much to see you play it, they added a shitton of content since 4 years if you didn't look pay too much attention (they've recently added Central Canada/Manitoba and are currently working on the Gulf of Mexico, most probably including Florida, so in a way that's a bit of East Coast)
Sad Red Dusk isnt here its such a good mod, id honestly put it in perfect. Simple, Fun, Multiple paths, FEELS LIKE VANILLA HOI4 BUT MODERN. I think the mod could kill off Millennium dawn if its done right.
I used to play Fallen Eagle quite a lot back in the day. I felt a little passionate about it. It didn't have a lot of content, but it felt like one of those mods that the dev puts their heart and soul into. Felt heartbroken when I came back from hoi4 hiatus only to find it was discontinued
Novum Vexillum is just Millennium Dawn classic but updated to the latest version and incorporating the latest DLC features. It's not very good but it's a lot more playable and enjoyable than Millennium Dawn at least. Novum Vexillum: Global Conflict is an essential submod.
Novum Vexillum is basically just Millennium Dawn's classic version with more straight forward technology, a very rudimentary (and completely skippable) economy system, and so on. I'd recommend giving it a try if you want a simplified Millennium Dawn that's more true to HOI4 than what MD has become. It's received some updates, every now and then, but not that often.
I am playing Old World Blues while watching this video and I fully agree with S tier. There are SO DAMN MANY options to play and all of them are amazing, especially if you are a Fallout Fan. There is so much content they have 7 or 8 starting scenarios just to fit all the interesting nations in.
Been playing Hoi4 since 2016, 4000+ hours overall. In the early years I was a big fan of the big mods that really changed the feel of Hoi4, Kaiserreich, Equestria at War, Old World Blues, and such. But now I don't play Hoi4 as much, and when I do I want more simple games, complex mods like Millenium Dawn and Black ice just confuse me. Vanilla and Great War Redux is about all I play now.
I feel like if ISP gave EAW a chance it would end up being something he came back too quite often, after all, he enjoys suffering and mentally ill focus trees, so that mod was basically made for him.
Empire is pretty fun, probably the best of the "putting the start date really far back in time" kinda mods. It takes place during the war of spanish succession and the great northern war and has a lot of fun paths for many different European nations.
@@jeebusthegreat8819 when I said "really far back in time" I didn't mean to include EOANB, thats less than a hundred years before the vanilla start date
Only gripe is the supply issues because they did not add rails/roads and supply hubs where they need. Tried Denmark Norway and America and given that it was damn near impossible to have fun. I think if they made Supply Hubs much cheaper it'd be cool or increased road supply output but right now is rather unfun given that
14:40 The original dev of Fuhrerreich basically dipped couple of years ago and recognised Redux as a sucessor to the mod. A lot of people didn't like the direction where Redux went, so they just made the classic version. It isn't in active development or anything, the devs just update the base Fuhrerreich so it can be played with the newer patches
Btw, Novum Vexillum is meant to be a continuation of Millennium Dawn Classic, just more hoi4-like and playable imo. But it requires a submod for most focus trees to be fun..
You really should play the Metro mod it got a big update a couple months ago and the map is perfectly designed for encirclements. I think you'd enjoy it.
You should actually give road to 56 Austria a go in Nostalgia november! It has recently been reworked and the tree is very expansive and has a lot of options and is generally pretty fun!
I'd definitely recommend EaW even if you're not a brony. It's very good and not limited by realism of a human setting. It's basically fantasy hoi4 with a lot of content for many different nations. Ironically, equestria and its content is some of the most dated and undercooked compared to the content in other continents in the mod.
u gotta give Darkest Hour a shot, its not that overly complicated, there is a economy system but its very easy to grapple. It is very in depth and detailed
TBH I was super skeptical about EAW the first time I learnt of it's existence. I knew it was a really good mod but the fact that it was based off MLP didn't resonated with me. I wasn't until I saw TomyKay play it that I took the courage to try it and oh boy... After a couple games you completely forgot about the whole ponies and griffons etc. thing being there, the mechanics are great, the fact that most focus trees change based on decisions you make always surprises you and overall there's a lot to see on it. Totally recommend giving it a try at least off camera :P Just try not to think about the fact that it is based on MLP and you should be fine.
Man I miss Red World, it was so interesting, even the trailers on UA-cam from the OG developer were awesome. Sucks that he died though. Such a shame to lose someone who came up with such an amazing world.

It's not my favorite, but when I do play it, it's hard not to have some fun

Someone's gonna have to do what they did with Kaiserreich then and make a TNO redux mod
@@sneedfried Victoria 3 or EU4 would be nice for some other mods too, Hoi4 Old World Blues would be even better as an EU4 mod imo

I honestly despise the mlp fanbase sometimes but I tried the mod and honestly it’s pretty solid. Solid 8.5/10.
Nah it’s Millenium Dawn but in the Cold War. Way too much stuff to manage
I'm not even a brony, and couldn't care less about MLP, but EAW is on par with OWB.

Virtually all paths make as much sense as any other
Empire at war is the best Foraxis game
@@electric5078 Well pretty much all alternative history mod is fantasy. The thing with EAW isn't it fantasy element, it "ahistorical" path is still just as ahistorical relative to EAW and MLP lore. It just the way the writing interconnected that make EAW world feel more connected.
Arguably a ahistorical earth with entirely new nation and completely different lore still can be very much enjoyable, it just need to actually need to be connect one way or another.
I am pleasantly surprised that he just said "idk lmao" for EaW. Very mature to not just insult it for being pony.

Empire at war is big
Especially agree on the Millenium Dawn:
Had a game with Croatia, was about to reform Austria Hungary when my saves corrupted, tried 2 more times and my saves kept corrupting after 20 years of playing
EAW literally has a whole continents of other species other than ponies, like griffons and zebras. Ok I see the point why, but try the griffons at least once.
Ya boy doesn't even want to touch death stars or space marines, griffons aren't going to entice him lol

@@charles-pn5uf Shimoi's path still has content it was just renamed from the italian shogunate to something else I believe. But spain and italy are also being updated with the france rework so I'm not sure what they'll do with it then.
EAW has nothing to do with MLP lore-wise really. It's one of the best mods in HOI4 and I'm sure there are submods that change the models

7:36 SO TRUE, OWB is goated and has an amazing submod community
Equestria at war is super fun. You need to do a video on it here.
equestria at war when??

EaW is unironically the best mod though
u gotta give Darkest Hour a shot, its not that overly complicated, there is a economy system but its very easy to grapple.
