You've articulated exactly how I felt after seeing this movie today with my sis (and really looking forward to it). Less than halfway through we were yawning. Three fourths of the way through we looked at each other and said, how can a movie about a stuntman and with all this star power be so BORING? We left before it was over. What a colossal disappointment, especially after that opening scene.
I could not agree more with the chase scene being ruined by the intercuts with the Karaoke scene. Especially with the song choice not working at all to underline the action. Not even as a contrast factor. But for me the movie found its groove in the second half when the plot finally was the driving point. So in the end, still good 7/10. But not really more and I was expecting a blast.
Well, The Fall Guy is based on a TV Show from the 1980s. It mostly gain tons of love for those who either love the show or a fan of stunts. I hope this movie get some legs and does well on VOD, Streaming and Home Media.
This movie is actually fantastic if you don’t have a critical lens to it and if you just want to have a good time!!! It’s an entertaining popcorn movie and a love letter to stunt people, and it succeeds at that! I would recommend anyone reading this to see it- it’s great with a crowd and it’s super enjoyable on the big screen :) had a blast with it!!!
Badly paced, no real script, actors seemed to be struggling just to make it something not terrible and they failed. Like all the actors but this is just a trainwreck
Gosling and Blunt needed more scenes together. The funniest character was the dog. Aaron Taylor Johnson isn’t really in the movie until deep into the second Act.
Thank you! I was totally uninterested waiting for something really exciting to happen, but right when things feel like they’re about to blow up everything will grind to a halt for some unfunny comedy or obvious exposition
I went into this movie with no expectations, and I was really taken by its fearlessness, and especially its commitment to the stunt actor profession (as the credits showed). I wasn't sure for the first hour if it was good or bad, but its final act really reeled it in and I walked out of the theater invigorated. Gosling and Blunt had great chemistry, and their banter and love story was really sweet. A movie that needs more love, I feel.
Wow, totally disagree. This movie was worth the money, a true blockbuster, for once. It was genuinely funny, great chemistry between the leads and the characters were actually developed...which is a stark contrast to, perhaps "Challengers".
I mean its hard to pin it directly to him. He's been in movies that have done well at the box office: La La Land, Blade Runner 2049, The Notebook, Remember the Titans, Crazy Stupid Love. Some of those movies did well because they were based on popular source material or had other stars in it that were box office draws. But some of those he is featured in/starring in and is part of the success of the movie.
It's pretty known to anybody that follows his career that he doesn't always choose big budget movies back to back very often and decides to participate in roles in small indies. Heck, he released Blade Runner 2049 and Song to Song in the same year! He starred in The Notebook and then in Stay the following year.
Well I personally have to disagree with you very strongly, I liked it a lot. I certainly liked it much more than Civil War. I really liked how it was shot in particular, in that I felt, for once, that I’m seeing a movie star on the screen in Ryan Gosling, which is something that’s been lacking in many movies recently, especially in action movies where the camera doesn’t really film the stars like they’re anything special, which this film does do with Gosling. Otherwise I thought a lot of the action was fun, I liked that it was an ode to stunt people and I thought the plot was interesting enough, as I didn’t really know where it was going. Serves me right for not really knowing Hannah Waddingham. I think it’s a shame that it hasn’t been too well and I wish more people would see movies like this. Is it a masterpiece? Not really, but it was a fun Friday night at the movies.
Brian thank you for your honest review… because this is exactly how I felt about The Fall Guy trailer. I loved the premise of the film shining a light on stunt work which I think is severely overlooked & under-appreciated in Hollywood especially by the Academy. But as much as I love Ryan Gosling & Emily’s Blunt’s work… the trailer left a lot to be desired for me. It just felt like a typical generic action flick. I didn’t get a sense of their chemistry either. And I found it to look very fake & CGI. I’m sure it is heaps of fun but that’s not enough for me to run to the cinema & pay in this economy to see it. I can wait until it comes out on Apple store to rent someday. I will say though the promotion for the film was great. Stunts on the red carpet was brilliant marketing!
Totally disagree, I think on all your points. Gosling is great here, not ok, his chemistry with Blunt was working due to both of their's charisma. I never felt like they're in love but they play great off each other comedically so their duo still works. The stunts are very good and highlight the stunt profession very well. My two small problems are: the movie is a bit too long (which movie isn't nowadays?) and they should have used much less CG enhancements. If it looked more like a Jackie Chan movie, more gritty, more real, that would make it a classic. Still the stunts were practical and the movie was A LOT of fun.
Haven’t seen this film yet, but Bryan said he doesn’t like “Atomic Blonde,” which makes me believe he needs to go back and rewatch all of this man’s films because he’s one of the few action film popcorn movie directors of this generation that have their own style, something Bryan seems to just about always respond to the most!
You say "I never really believed that the movie they were making was something anybody would be interested in." But that's the thing for me -- except for a few of the movie segments from The Artist, I have never seen a movie that is focusing on making a movie that I feel anyone would be interested in. That doesn't mean the real life movie isn't good. Like Singing in the Rain. When they get to the Broadway Melody, I'm wondering what the heck The Dancing Cavilier is about. What does Broadway Melody have to do with anything? But, a movie doesn't always need to be, well, an awards contender. Sometimes, I just want to go to a movie and have fun. I'm still looking forward to this movie.
What a great point about The Dancing Cavalier, always looked like a pretty lame movie, but that was never the point of the film. Same with The Fall Guy, it's used as a device throughout.
@@Ryan_t1290 I agree, which is why it never has bothered me when a fictional movie that is being made in a movie that I'm watching doesn't strike my fancy. That's not the point of the real movie. You don't want to be watching a fictional movie going "I'd rather be watching this movie within a movie!" Except for The Majestic. And I like The Majestic. But that fictional movie with Bruce Campbell is completely up my alley. Singing in the Rain is one of the greatest movies ever made, even if its fictional movie looks stupid. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing The Fall Guy on Sunday.
I liked it. I actually bought the blue-ray. It's not a movie that I would normally be attracted to, but because Ryan and Emily were in it, I went. You can always count on top-tier acting from those two. I am glad I did! It had some really great bits...the running gag in search for a cup of coffee was hilarious. It had a screwball plot, minor flaws, great acting, and great action scenes. It was a popcorn blast of a movie. I left the theatre smiling.
Respect for an honest take but I completely disagree. In fact I think Gosling and Blunt's chemistry was the best part of the movie and really elevated it to greatness for me. It's not perfect and not my fav Leitch movie but I had a great time and I was invested a lot in what was going on. I do agree things linger on a lil too long though and there are a few editing issues.
I like it a lot. I thought it was definetly a push for a stunt category at the Academy Awards. I thought Gosling and Blunt had chemistry. There could have been more of Stephanie.
This movie was like nails on a chalkboard to me. I walked out after one hour and I can't remember the last time I did that. I wasn't enjoying this movie at all. The comedy and romance didn't work
Yes, you went too hard, but at least you are honest. This is what a lot of my tough-guy friends said about Barbie. They could not understand all the hype & reasoning why people liked it. But, to each their own.
hearing that you don't like Atomic Blonde makes me feel like I will wholeheartedly disagree because I LOVE that movie because of it's pacing and editing style and sequencing 😂
The problem is the non existent marketing. But also people judging it by the first weekend. Now that we know about it, it's suddenly going to be somewhat of a success. People don't watch the Oscars. And won't look up trailers, since they fell out of love with Hollywood.
It’s disappointing that you didn’t stay for the credits. Best credits we’ve scene to honor the stunt crew. But it does sound like you were over the movie anyway by then.
I honestly believe that chemistry is there, ana that this movie succeded as a romantic one, but maaan... Smth happened in the editing room. I honestly belive they shot a good movie, but they put together a monster. Two third acts instead of one. LOTS of scenes that should have been cut. Truly iconic moments buried in innessessary ones. CLEAR remains of early scenario draft and even downright bad cuts. It's painful. Cause they clearly shot it whith love and soul.
Same same same for me. 52 year old woman who did grow up watching The Fall Guy (so we are different demographic) but I had exactly the same reaction--in fact I only made it til one hour left in movie and had completely lost interest --saw the direction it was going and was throughly bored. The problem was the script. Let's be real. The script was juvenile and undeveloped. It shocks me that a film can get made without a script that makes any sense. What a tremendous waste of resources and talent! Shocking really. Agree directing and editing was poor. One thing that made me laugh was the 80s sound effect for the stunts. I think more of that would have been fun. More 80s car explosion homage to funny stunts of the original. I liked the dog the best and French commands were the only funny thing and even that was badly edited. I found your review to be spot on.
I felt like the meta humour didn't work, because it never critczed anything, nor pulled back the curtain. There were too many action scenes that were too polished. The crime plot was clearly telegraphed. I wouldn't say Gosling and Blunt didn't have chemistry, but their relationship wasn't well defined, and Blunt character comes off as a lot more selfish than she's supposed to be.
I was exactly the opposite. I found literally everything about this movie in the lead up to be extremely annoying and off-putting. I ended up seeing it anyway, and it won me over.
I thought the movie was really fun. I loved the mixture of meta and satire. This movie also had 2 of my favorite scenes in the movies so far this year: 01 - The trippy video game-esque fight scene Ryan Gosling does 02 - Emily Blunt's Against All Odds karaoke scene juxtaposed with the action scenes. Very Marvel/DC inspired like the ending credits scene. Now I'm curious to see Brian review the Tilda Swinton movie Problemista with a small role from Greta Lee and see if that's up his alley. Genuinely one of my favorite movies of the year (along with Challengers & Dune 2) ❤
The whole movie is not to be taken seriously, I think we all know that. With that, the movie is wayyyy more enjoyable than most of the summer blockbusters. It's also a very sweet love letter to stunt people. I thought it was good for what it was overall.
I totally agree with you, it was total nonsense, for me , Gosling and Blunt are wasting their talent there. Exactly, nobody knows what it is really, as they try to be too many things.
I liked it but it could have been done with a smaller budget. I had a little trouble getting into Ryan's character because behind-the-scenes videos on you-tube make us realize how dangerous movie sets are. No stunt person would be as reckless as Colt in the movie, except Burt Reynolds in "Hooper". I need to watch "F/X" with Bryan Brown again. Yes, Challengers was tremendous. NY Times had a piece about how the movie was made. The Wall Street Journal had a piece about the hottest actors working now--Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, and Timothy Chalamet "Can dune 2 catapult a new group of a-list stars?"
I totally agree, the rhythm of the film was off putting. All the characters were pretty 1 dimensional, did not feel very invested in the relationship or to the characters. Some scenes felt drawn out / unnecessarily slow like they were just trying to fill time. I did enjoy it though was nice to see with my family. Was a good watch, not a great movie and not a bad one and don’t think I’d ever have the urge to watch it again.
Completely agree. Everybody wants to make excuses and play the blame game, but the movie is just terrible. Make a great movie and people will go. This one seemed easy, don't know how they ruined it.
I thought this was a decent popcorn movie. Probably should have been made for Netflix, sadly. Challengers was not for me, I thought it was style over substance. Of the movies that are still in theaters, I think Monkey Man is far superior.
I HATED IT and I am so happy I did not go see it in the theatre which I was suppose to. I was checking my watch constantly yesterday... I even paused it and went outside (no not to scream) but did continue it later. It was the EXTENDED edition... I didn't care for anything in this film, the story is not compelling, the humor is so cringy, the movie drags way too much and is very predictable. I'd rather go watch The Nice Guys or SPY again. At least those were actually funny.
I feel like I watched a different movie than Brian for both Challengers and The Fall Guy. I was so bored by the middle of Challengers. I didn't feel the tension at all and I didn't care about the characters. The Fall Guy was really fun for me and I liked the characters.
It felt odd that so many of the scenes between Blunt and Gosling had them talking over the phone or walkie talkies. There's always a distance between them, which doesn't help build a romance between them.
They literally highlight that as a part of the movie when they’re talking about the characters within their own film. Like that’s literally the point at times
I enjoyed this movie. Not to the extent I was hoping for but the stunts and action were great, the cast was excellent and all the behind the scenes of the movie set sequences had my inner movie geek very satisfied! Great review
Actresses in action movies shouldn't have to big of a role, unless there's a good reason for it. So, saying that Emily Blunt doesn't do much spectacular it's making the case for the movie.
I usually agree with you, but this time I don’t. I was completely entertained the whole time, and thought they did have good chemistry. I do agree about Stephanie Hsu and the karaoke scene. Why does every romcom have to have karaoke??
I wanted to love it and I really did love the ode to the stunt people but the movie just never grabbed me. I agree with most of the movie’s shortcomings you mentioned. I’ll watch anything the baby goose does but overall I was disappointed.
its not a bad movie, I saw it at a friends house even though its in theatres. I passed a movie and thought mayby i would buy a ticket, but meh, i wasnt excited the first time
I completely disagree about the chemistry between Gosling and Blunt. I was with some friends and we all thought they completely had it and that was the strongest element, but there were few laugh out loud moments and it all felt recycled from other films. I liked it, but I was prepared to love it.
Brian, I should have listened to you. I went to see it and was hugely disappointed. I thought a former stunt man directing a movie about a stunt man would be a good movie. I mean, Hooper with Burt Reynolds was pretty good. I thought the Lee Majors TV show was good, even though I was a kid. But what a big disappointment.
You are bang on...i've just finished watching it....what a mess. too much stuff, but little plot, no chemistry, no good jokes, ...loud, annoying people...just rubbish. And as per...waay too long...
I personally really enjoyed the FALL GUY movie but this movie flopping along with Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare under-performing proves that even NON-WOKE movies can flopped badly.
The single worst movie I have ever seen in a movie theater (yes I have seen some worse outside of it but not that many). Bad plot (if you want to call it that since it was so thin) that the actors were just struggling with to make....something out of. Bad directing. Just bad. I have low end PTSD just from viewing it. It took decades but the movie Gone Fishin' with Pesci has finally been moved to the 2nd worst movie I have ever seen in the theater.
This movie was perfect. It had action, comedy and romance without gratuitous gore and demeaning t & a and general demeaning of women and ADULT relationships.
Nothing. She's never been a huge box office draw (and don't tell me A Quiet Place. People didn't go to see it because she was in it). Her last movie was Oppenheimer (1 billion at the box office, again not necessarily because she was in it.)
Same, Brian. Same.
This movie for me is an example of it sounding perfect on paper, but not working at all on the screen.
Hmmm. I have to disagree. I really liked it.
It sucks
Personally I enjoyed the movie it's just fun nothing more or less but I think you make some fair points.
Yeah i have to disagree as well.. it was a fun movie

Was a good watch, not a great movie and not a bad one and don’t think I’d ever have the urge to watch it again.
Thank you, thank you. I thought I was the only one who did not like this movie. I found the story to be stupid, and the jokes embarrassingly lame.
Completely agree. Everybody wants to make excuses and play the blame game, but the movie is just terrible. Make a great movie and people will go. This one seemed easy, don't know how they ruined it.
In my opinion he could watch the movie without a critical eye and just enjoy the movie for what it was.
Yes, a dumpsterfire
I thought this was a decent popcorn movie. Probably should have been made for Netflix, sadly. Challengers was not for me, I thought it was style over substance. Of the movies that are still in theaters, I think Monkey Man is far superior.
It was so boring. Not funny, not romantic, plot sucked. Totally agree with this review.
@@toxic1strike167”literally” 😂
You commented it not once, but twice. 😂
Totally agree. Blunt was a miscast.
I agree with you. I grew up with the TV show. Was expecting a lot more. This could have been a great movie.
I enjoyed this movie. Not to the extent I was hoping for but the stunts and action were great, the cast was excellent and all the behind the scenes of the movie set sequences had my inner movie geek very satisfied! Great review
I also disagre
totally agree, this movie isn't even funny, I decided to not take it seriously and try to enjoy it as it is, but even with that it sucks.
I passed a movie and thought mayby i would buy a ticket, but meh,
i wasnt excited the first time
I strongly disagree. This was a great movie with so much.
For anyone saying "I like the movie" the box office numbers confirm this movie to be a complete failure. It will lose a lot of money.
Wasn't a terrible movie but yeah, just didn't really feel like anything we haven't seen before.
The fall guy was ok and I totally get Brian’s points.
Great movue. Why are people talking smack. It was better than Barbie.
Let me be the one person that agrees with you...sorta. I wouldn't say it was bad, but I expected a lot more. Bullet Train still takes the cake for me.
I loved atomic blonde but hated this. It felt thin
I wasn't sure I was going to see this movie
Dang. Winston Duke doesnt even get a mention as an ignored co star? Was he that minimal not to be acknowledged???? Sup Brian????
Emily and Ryan did not blend well. They are both good actors, but none of the dialogue was believable…
totally disagree on blunt and gosling's chemistry, i found it to be really fun
you have a good voice , i think voices make or break you tube comment videos
i thought it was just fine. not bad at all, but forgettable
this movie is souless, no heart, capt ron has a heart, movies with a heart, name a few
No reason not to wait until it comes to streaming then.
gosling and blunt have major chemistry
Exactly my thoughts.
Yhea was just whatever, the main guy was like any main guy. Random cool guy. And endless stunt that got boring qnd annoying at the end.
it sounds like this movie less would have been more
This movie looked like a skip evertime I saw the trailer. It just doesn't look great. It has a corny vibe.
movie within movie, wag the dog, tropic thunder
Emily blunt use to be a huge box office draw, what happened
Nothing. She's never been a huge box office draw (and don't tell me A Quiet Place. People didn't go to see it because she was in it). Her last movie was Oppenheimer (1 billion at the box office, again not necessarily because she was in it.)
The bit both Emily and ryan did at the oscars was very funny. They had so much chemistry, so I'm surprised
This movie is crap. Unwatchable, couldn't stand it until the end and had to quit 40 min into.
same thing with opppenheimer wave over rated
