As someone who grew up during the troubles, I can now say that Belfast must be one of Europe's safest cities to walk around. The Europa hotel where you got off the bus used to be the most bombed hotel in the world. Thankfully things have turned right round. Great city now.
I visited Belfast a couple of years ago and was massively impressed with how friendly, welcoming and clean the city is. I loved it. It's getting more and more popular, but still is one of the most ' under the radar' cities in Europe. Visit before it becomes too popular!
My son was living there. So friendly and such a beautiful city.
@Michael Halligan I wasn't talking about WW2.
@Michael Halligan ua-cam.com/video/-VeWR9z22tU/v-deo.html
Great city much nicer than Dublin.
In Ireland people can park what way they want, it doesn’t matter what way the car faces. If the space is there you take it !
It's not in Ireland, it's pretty much everywhere in Europe
@@AlessioMichelini No it's definitely not. I've never seen this
@@webelievee what, that you can park in any direction? I travelled in many places in europe, I'm Italian and I live in Ireland, never seen a parking that you could only park in one direction.
As someone from Northern Ireland, Lisburn {where you caught the bus}, I had no idea that parking in a specific direction was a thing. Obviously yes on a one-way street but on a two-way street, if the space is there, you take it. Between Lisburn and Belfast {about 8 miles} is a busy commuter hub so has halts {unmanned stations} every mile or so along the route and sadly a young woman stepped off the platform as a Lisburn to Belfast express was passing. You also filmed Bittles bar, from outside. This is a bit of an anti-tourist attraction. Check out the trip advisor reviews to find out more.
No you have one way streets in dublin. What are you talking about?
I am so sorry for the people and families involved in the fatality. I was really looking forward to seeing the scenery. It is so beautiful. I would have loved to have watched you go back the same way. I am so happy you could selvage the rest of the trip. Your boat looked so cool. Like everyone else, I was very impressed with the way you handled the whole thing.
The train route from Belfast to Derry is another nice stretch, when it finally meets the coast it's very picturesque.
The rail journey from dublin to Rosslare is even more beautiful.
Some more useless info for you; condoms were illegal in The Republic of Ireland untill the late 1980's (I shit you not!), so people took that very rail journey up to Northern Ireland(part of UK) to get hold if them.🤦♂️🤩☘
Coleraine to Derry Londonderry is stunning.
It's all beautiful see All the Stations Ireland on UA-cam. It looks like Ireland's railways are great but could do with more usage.
Alex I agree. It’s stunning.
I was just coming in to comment the same thing
yep. particularly the journey from bray To Greystones along Bray Head. Stunning views.
We get more sun in Dublin than people think, & looooong dusks in summer with light up to 11 pm in high summer, & long autumns, the East Coast, including Dublin, but especially Wexford, Waterford, Cork, south of Dublin is the more sheltered part of Ireland & known as the 'sunny south East'.
If I ever get married, I want my vows to include, “I don’t know where I’m going next, but I want you there with me.”
japplebite a yes, it’s a really great sign off. As if this guy isn’t likeable enough...
Oh man! That’s amazing. Thanks so much guys!
@@DownieLive Stole it! Say it to my wife all the time!

Hitting the like buttons along the way. 😉
Thanks guy.
YOUR AWESOME !!!
Yay! Thank you! You're awesome!
My favorite train journey in Ireland is from Dublin to Wicklow, the best segment being between Bray and Greystones.
The whole coast mate, from Killiney, around Bray head and all the way down 'the murrough' to Wicklow
Oh they’re fancy! Pushing the food of cart to ya. Very peaceful and scenic video! And then I got sad. This was a very good video.
Thanks Will. I got sad too.
When I saw you were transferred to a bus at the start of the video I thought ‘at least he’s getting to experience true train travel here in Ireland’ but when I found out about the fatality I felt horrible. I once was stuck on a train for 6 hours because some sheep wandered onto the line…. Our public transport infrastructure is the epitome of ‘it is what it is’ 🤣💜
I thought the exact same thing too. Then when I saw it was due to fatality 😬
Usually it's a 'signal issue' or train broke down before our one.
My wife and I have been to Dublin twice and Cork once. And both were wonderful. But our visit to Belfast blew my mind. I found a city with an adorably lively centre, full of surprises. I've been all over Europe and Belfast is in my top five of favorite holiday destinations. 😊
I did that trip every week for 2 years on business from Denmark. Dublin-Belfast-Dublin. Beautiful scenery all year round. My spiritual home for sure. Love Ireland.
Lovely to see our railways getting some attention!
For the street parking cars can park as long as they are in the spaces and it doesn’t matter which way they are facing , it’s difficult enough to find spaces so if they have to pull across a lane of traffic to park they safely do so :)
matters after dark, it is a motoring offence to have your car the wrong direction in the hours of darkness.
Absolutely love the train videos. They are my favorite. You do a great job!
I'm From Belfast and love travelling down to Dublin, my partner works 5 days a week in Dublin and makes this trip back and forth weekly. I'd love to join him with our son for a trip together , but unfortunately due to covid-19 we cannot. Watching this has cheered me up remembering this too will pass and plenty of travels ahead in the future.
How about a police control to cross from Dublin to Northern Ireland?
How much does it cost a ticket from Belfast to Dublin, and do they accept euros in Belfast incase one needs to buy a ticket
Can't believe how clean that train is. And the size of the restroom. We are so far behind the times.
I vacationed there in Ireland 1-17-20. I found the whole place to be clean and spacious. Especially the bathrooms. Oh, did l mention how friendly the locals were? ☺
Dont be fooled by one video the tolet are usely took over my some junkies smoking herion from dundalk or drogheda all the time
@@user-uf8gc1pi2c Untrue .I go once a week from Dublin to Belfast return on that enterprise train and never came across that .Not saying that it is not possible but if it is it is rare.
@@user-uf8gc1pi2c Not on the Enterprise train. You are talking about the local trains.
@@anthonydowling3356 yea right I am from dundalk and no who is who and i see people all the time am on this train in the tolet with there animal bars for the tinfoil and the smell of heroin from the tolets
It's a normal thing here regarding the parking, you just find a spot and if you can get a gap in the oncoming traffic then just pull across the road stick on your blinker and in you go either straight in or reverse in when its safe to do so :)
We did this same trip while on vacation in Ireland last year. Loved it so much.
If you’re back during the summer / nice weather - the train journeys from Belfast to Portrush / Bangor / (London)derry are all gorgeous!
Very decent of you to respect the incident with fatalities.
Dublin and the east of Ireland are actually sunny quite regularly. It's the west of country that lacks sunshine.
@john dunne Dublin gets 310 days of sunshine a year.. look it up
I know I'm a dub and moved to Leitrim and we often get cloud of rain. I miss Dublin for that reason
Lucky ducky! Ireland looks so beautiful! Loved to watch thru your eyes❣️
And what about Northern Ireland!? If this prick didn't keep advertising as 1 country maybe people would know that. That's like me calling him a Russian lol
Paulo Chan 👍
Did this trip in the 1990's when it first opened....bit of an adventure going from Manchester to Belfast without flying . Train to Holyhead, ferry to Dublin, and then this Intercity to Belfast. The view along the coast is stunning.
Steve Clarke I used to do it in the 1950s, how do you mean it’s new? I have been in Australia for 55 years an never been back there.
The Enterprise has been running now for over 120 years.
FYI Transport for Ireland is upgrading this line to run Belfast-Dublin-Cork using high speed trains with 200kph inter city express trains. Good news. The money has already been allocated.
I don't know how I came across your channel but watched almost all video of yours it's amazing it been only two days I had to subscribe it and can't wait to see you on the next rail trip really appreciate your work
You got off the train in Lisburn (my home town, thought now its the City of Lisburn). The station was originally built in 1839 but later rebuilt in 1878, so is an OLD station! Lisburn is beautiful & friendly & alot of folk say it should have always remained a "market town" rather than becoming a city... Its got to be 1 of the smallest cities in the UK, if not THE smallest! But it still retains its market town charm!!
I'm not sure you would call Lisburn - or by it's original name Lios na gCearrbhach - a city though considering it has a mere 45K in population. A large town maybe.
@@maxedww Lisburn is a designated city. That is a fact. Whether or not Newry and Lisburn should ever have been designated as cities is another matter.
You're a good man, Michael. Much respect to you and your work. As always, thanks for the inspiration. Stay safe out there.
You have such a positive attitude towards everything. Respect to you for how you handled the death on the train journey. It’s a beautiful country, and thank you for sharing your journeys with us.
Ohhh how much I miss being in Belfast and its been forever since i been in Ireland awesome video besides taking a bus and taxi to get to Belfast but can't wait to see more videos from you.
That part with the cars? Made me laugh out loud. I'm half Irish so two years ago I finally made the long-awaited journey to meet my cousins in Dublin. I flew and when I arrived in Dublin airport I made my way straight for the restrooms. My chosen stall wouldn't close. Why? The door had been put on backwards and so the lock was on the outside. So Welcome to Ireland!! It's different there.😂
I missed that place , bellfast , Ireland station, thanks for sharing and connected to you , love the way of your sharing
My wife and I did a 15 day self drive tour of Ireland - it was great! We finished off the holiday doing this train trip from Dublin to Belfast. Yes, a very pleasant train trip indeed, but I wouldn't say it was great. I think I was spoilt by driving a car and stopping at somewhere pretty when/where I liked, rather than flying by in a train, and just getting a fleeting glance of something nice for only a couple of seconds.
I hear you, but you can turn that around. I'm always driving the car--so it is I that can't see anything except my eyes front and center on the road. In the train, I FINALLY can look at the countryside, doze off if/when I want, get up and walk around and so on. To me, train travel is hard to beat.
@@jimquantic Fair enough comment, but overall, still prefer the car - but each to their own 🙂
There's no view from the motorway anyway, even in the top front seat of a double-decker bus. The train is on the cost, and does have a view.
I love Ireland. I've spent a week there and I feel like I haven't even began to scratch the surface. It has such a good balance of old and new, slow country pace and modern dense cities, all interconnected by efficient transportation. But one thing I miss the most about being in Ireland is the Taytos! (on the food cart at 3:54) Yes they are "just" potato chips but they're the best chips I've ever had. I bought several bags to take home but the flight delay and my lack of self control meant I had to buy more at the airport regardless of how overpriced they were
My cousin loved the Taytos while we were there. I ordered a case for her when we returned to the States. She was so happy when she received the case.
@@ElizabethBSoCal How/where did you manage to order them?
@@Rickie-37 I searched online for them. This was in 2018 and I cannot remember the site. Darn it.
@@Rickie-37 I did a quick search right now and found some on Amazon
@@ElizabethBSoCal oh thank you!!
Hey Michael, please stay safe if you still indeed are travelling, make sure your loved ones remain safe and healthy as well.
Love you channel, and your ethos.
You're a good person👍
Thanks. I’m currently back home and safe in Canada. Still a few more videos from this last trip to come though. You stay safe as well.
My buddy in London is from Belfast always wanted to visit ! Great job! Thank You
Awesome. Looks like alot of fun there. Thanks for the adventure I pictured Belfast so much different.
Ireland is simply a fairy tale. We love You.
All of your videos keep me alive in these times...
I started traveling to Northern Ireland, including Belfast and Derry, in the mid-1970s. Because of the Troubles, which mostly affected s few square urban, miles, I discovered to my joy that tourists were nowhere to be seen. Folks in Ireland were usually amazed to see an American tourist, but when I described the mean streets of downtown Philadelphia, where I lived, they began to understand how I found Northern Ireland so relaxing, even with the presence of a lot of British troops, checkpoints, etc.
8:10 Wanted to see the interior of the boat where you rested/ napped. Just a few seconds clip maybe.
dude. you are so most excellent. never.stop. (truly did not think you'd be my cuppa tea but here we are.) Good work.
Beautiful.....thanks! You really remind me of me when I travelled as you are. I miss those days but I would never forget them either!
Ireland has actually been pretty sunny again this February! I just posted a video of my time in Belfast. It wasn't as sunny as Dublin, but it sure was fun!
Wow...I spent several days in Belfast in 1986...now It seems so different...More Cosmopolitan And Safe than in the past...nice video indeed...enjoy...
No now 🤪 The most scenic train ride in Ireland or N Ireland is from Coleraine to Derry. Along the coast .
I just found your channel!!! Your travel vlogging is great, great presentation!... thank you, as I plan to visit Ireland myself! 🇮🇪💚
I have just discovered accidentally your channel and I have see only one or two videos and I have just love them, and very especiall your commentos. I have been five times to Europe and it amazes me to see how the trains have improved. Never beento the States of Canad. Thnak yhou very much. William Grant.
That view at 4:23 is beautiful!
Coleraine to Derry/Londonderry is the most scenic.
Thank You Mike for taking us on your trips. God Bless You and your family. Love all the information about the trains.
thanks
Young Master Downie will be a success at whatever he does because his attitude is so up-beat and refreshing.
As an Irish person from Dublin only politicians use the term Northern Ireland. The majority of people say 'the north ' as we would say 'the west' 'the east' 'the south' For the most part it's not in our consciousness to view the north as a separate entity.
Slainte from Ireland ☺💚💚💚.
[disgruntled Northern Irish noises]
How a police control to cross from Dublin to Northern Ireland? Is there more control?
@0972q8 thank you, but Can I cross from Dublin to north ireland without passport ?
@0972q8 thank you very much 🙏
The proper name is Northern Ireland. It’s used legally, internationally and every way apart from Irish republicans who call it the north. That’s irrelevant though.
I don’t know how you did it but you caught some sunshine!! We’ve had such bad weather since probably November to now (March 2020) hope you enjoyed your time here!
I did! I had sunshine during my whole trip! It was a miracle!
DownieLive well certainly glad you got it! And hope you enjoyed your time! Sad about the fatality but I hope you got the thousand welcomes we’re famous for! Be sure to come back again!
I have only been to the airport in Dublin, but I would like one day when this pandemic is over to spend a few days if now weeks visiting and enjoying what beautiful Ireland has to offer.
hi i love the vodoes
Very nice! When I took the train from England to Wales the train broke down and we ended up taking a bus to Cardiff. It was exciting seeing the bilingual sign welcoming us to Wales. The trains in Scandinavia are also fabulous and very scenic just like on the beautiful island of Great Britain.🧐
I love your travel logs..I knew you were Canadian. Abouwt gave it away lol. I love your excitement of travel.
Yes! Thank you!
Yes, it is absolutely stunning. But I challenge whether it is Ireland's most scenic train journey. We're regular visitors to Ireland, with close family & friends there and we have a train-mad child. So, my recommendation is the DART from Dublin's Connolly Station to Bray, and beyond to Greystones. There are charming towns & villages on the stops. I suggest taking the DART to the last stop, and then either spending a bit of time exploring & returning back to Dublin on the DART. Or, jump straight back on at the end stop and get out at a planned stop on the way & explore there. It's enough of a daytrip to enjoy the scenic journey & explore one village or tow. Alternatively, the DART also goes north from Dublin to beautiful Howth, and it's only half an hour to make that journey. Howth is itself a beautiful seaside village.
All of your videos are so enjoyable! Your commentary is especially informative! Thanks for the time you put into them.
Thanks for watching!
Now they have Dublin Express bus at the airport but it's private. It also goes to Belfast from Dublin Apt
Another great video. Dublin is such a fun city but so laid back with it.
you cope with bus replacements with such a smile, wish i was that positive when it happens
I took this train about two years ago. It was nice.
the drive up there is nice too. 2 hours by and and you can see come cool stuff!
6:24 I got off that stop today lisburn
The platforms look nice and wide at the stations. And another big lovely bathroom!! It was good how the train company had everything organized for disruptions in the trains to help travellers.
Sonia Hamilton Yeah, that is the benefit of our nationalised system, with buses and trains both owned by the state.
Love it man! Your travel videos are so genuine and I feel like I am on the trip with you and it’s awesome 👏🏼
Thanks Wyatt! I have a few more good ones from this trip coming soon!
DownieLive can’t wait to watch em!
You can get the Enterprise(that train) for about $15 if you book online 3 days before the date you want to travel.
Ricky McNally You can also catch a bus to the centre for FAR less than €40!
George L very true. Only a few euro. Anyone I’ve ever had come visit did that.
Pleasant trip but if you like scenery, Dublin Rosslare is by some distance the best. Then try Dublin Tralee and Dublin Sligo. Apart from the section between Bray and Greystones on the way to Rosslare, we don't really have anything to compare with Scotland's Highland line which you posted. The short coastal section between Belfast and (London)Derry would be similiar
I just got home from Belfast. Being home just a few days and in isolation it feels like I'm still in Belfast. I wish I didn't have to leave.
I'm really enjoying your videos! Thank you and God bless you!
I did a similar detour once but in the other direction - I was on a steam excursion train which was going to Portadown, but we had to get off at Lisburn (where you got on the bus) because of a bomb threat further down the line (typical northern ireland!) We also ended up on a bus to Portadown.
When I was in Belfast shooting my doc I looked into traveling by train to Dublin. I was told that (in 2000) there were occasionally problem on the tracks. I didn't want to get stuck on a day trip to Dublin so I didn't go.
As always, great show, shooting, talking and I still can't figure out how you keep yourself composited in the frame without some kind of a monitor.
😄😄
Yes in the past bussing between stations was very common as the IRA used to plant bombs or hoax devices on the line or under bridges in an effort to disrupt the service. Its ironic in that this was a service that united both parts of the island. It got so bad that people formed the Peace Train group in 1989 which organised mass groups of fed up citizens to travel on a chartered train from Dublin to Belfast. Organised by the late Sam McAughtry. See Wikipedia for more.
Usually at Lurgan, and usually only in the summer time, the train goes right through the Kilwilkie estate which is a republican area. That would be the station after the one he changed trains. I used to live in those houses right next to the station in Portadown. Woke every morning at half 4/ 5 o'clock with the diesel engines starting up.
That was the hostel I stayed in! Great video thank you
So cool!
I have really enjoyed watching your adventures, and I have seen places through your eyes and experiences that I have only read about. Thank you!
What a amazing experience dude. That was awesome to see! Added to my bucket list!!!
I love trains reminds me so much of Montreal at 4.24
You should tour Dublin IRELAND and go to cork . And you should go to bray and bray has a cliff walk to Grerystones and super cool train tunnels that you can go through with the Grerystones DART train and I live in IRELAND
Cork, Galway and Belfast are the places to go.
Through the midlands of Ireland? You might want to dig out your map!! Still enjoyed the video though.🙂
I did this trip on the train 51yrs ago with my little daughter !
Great video and parking in Belfast is a first come first get the space no matter what direction you are travelling in!!
Loved this video, you’re an amazing narrator and vlogger! Just subscribed!
The parking reminds me of the time in Canada when my Irish family and I parked so we were facing the car in front of us. Came back a policewoman about to write us a ticket! Had to explain how we had no idea of the parking rule, when it’s a "free for all" in Ireland.
Mike, you’re such a natural, such a great host. Dynamic, dramatic, fun edits, good music. You should do well. Is there more to this trip? You didn’t say. Peace.
Yes, there are 3 or 4 more videos. 2 of them I’m really excited to show you!
Guess I should specify. The sound reac coming out of the Blinkit commercial.
Great trip, thanks for great day!
Loved ur video, I live in Belfast NI. It is a great and lovely city. Next time u visit u have to visit the dome in daylight.
Me and my wife worked on the enterprise train, its were we meet gr8 video
The running joke is that the station announcement in rural Ireland are as follows. "The train pulling onto platform one is the mumbles serving mumbles CHANGE AT PORTARLINGTON/MALLOW/ETC"
That is so funny and true ! Here in England people on the train platforms turn to each other and ask 'What did they say'? Inside the train they don't even ask.
you should get to Donegal...the best part of Ireland.
Nice , i was just wondering which company train was 🙃🤭 i don't know anything from there at all. 😊
You should of taken the DART from Bray station into Dublin and the views that you would get of killiney beach is deadly
The views between greystones and Bray are even better imo, though the views of Killiney are good too
Should HAVE
On my first trip to Ireland, I took the car ferry from Fishguard in Wales to Rosslare.
I got a room by the water in Bray, parked my car, and I took DART into the city.
Avoiding Dublin traffic (and parking) was the smartest thing I ever did.
Enjoy Dublin, Ireland and keep hair under control!! 😊❤
Love the content and video quality! Keep up the great work sir!
