Thanks for the effort in explaining this, I feel there's a lot going on behind the scenes that we don't know about and would help understand more

To me, it means that some "classic" rock bands or artists are becoming "legacy" rock bands. It creates a brand new label. That "brand new" label will be used by record companies to sell more and more products every year (boxes, special editions). Legacy rock bands are becoming cash cows to these companies.

My only hope is that now they will somehow solve the problems far easily each time a new release arrives on the horizon. If this contract does not have any influence on that side of this business, then I have no big hopes. Symbolically Sony will now release a new best of - just to celebrate this transition and then it will be followed by something else.

Didn't they do a cut-down version of Echoes in 2011, titled "A foot in the door"? That has such a disgusting tracklist, no fade-ins-outs and generally, very odd choice. The first track was "Hey You", cause you know, it is widely regarded as the best album opener ever :)

I predict many more massive box set reissues. I do wonder about those Pink Floyd live albums sold through Burning Shed, apparently they are legit and not bootlegs.

Sony are leaders in new media, video games and other audio/visual media. As leaders in new media in 2023 they had a revenue of $86.4 billion, $10 Billion over the previous year. Sony made a net income of $6.5 billion in 2023. I don't know whether a billion here is nine noughts or 12 noughts before las comma to the left, i.e. whether the Pink Floyd deal is $O.004 billion or $0.0000004 billion. My point is that however globally famous the band, they are a drop in an ocean compared with the breadth of wealth in new media. That said, looked at the laws about musical rights, and who surrenders what to the almighty dollar is detail worth exploring.
