    Matt - you answered my question - using podmics and was concerned the preamps mightnt be able to handle them.... Happy days - mixcast 4 now on order.

      It’s pretty good to be fair. Certainly won’t be changing from it.

    Hi Matt, I just started livestreaming and bought the Rode Podmic. I'm using an ATEM mini with ecamm. Plugged the mic in and...nothing. Bought a FetHead, plugged it in and...nothing. The Mixcast 4 is a $400 investment for a livestream that gets maybe 20 people tuning in. I wonder if the $80 Tascam US-42B wouldn't work just as well. I'm just trying to get the mic to work, I don't need all the special effects. What are your thoughts?

      Hi @slyreader and thanks for reaching out. I can't say I know much about the ATEM mini so can't comment on that. I get your point about the additional investment. We can often spend WAY too much money on kit when it's not always required. A cheaper solution would be the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 which you can get from Amazon. See the following link. I also have one of these and the Podmic works a treat with it. I just like my gadgets too much haha. Wishing you the best of luck and do let me know how you get on.

    Hi Matt. Just a couple of quick questions for you if you could let me know please. What output volume do you have the device on your PC? Do you try to run the Mixcast 4 mic volume parallel to your PC volume? So e.g. if your peaks are -6db on the Mixcast, do your peaks hit -6db on Audacity for example. Do you use the ASIO driver off the Tascam downloads page? Did you do any post-editing on this video e.g. normalisation on the audio? Just asking as I seem to be getting a lot of flatness, hoarse and, it sounds like latency or splurts running this at peaks of about -2/3db (not hitting 0db) and I'm trying to work out if it's the set up, the ASIO driver, possibly even the sample rate. Or whether the device just doesn't like going above something like -4db. Thanks

      Hi @BackpackZac
      Thanks for your comment. As per the video I cannot confess to being an audio pro but as far as db goes on this setup, I aim to have my levels on the Mixcast 4 between 0 & 12 which in turn records to Audacity between -6 & -12. I also find recording straight to Audacity much quicker than waiting to access the project file on the Mixcast. Do you find the same?
      There was also no post processing in this audio. It was exported from audacity as recorded from the unit and synced with the video file. Did you think my audio was okay? As you can see from the lack of comments I haven’t had that much feedback and it’s feedback that helps us all LOL. I keep meaning to record a more in depth review but it’s a) time, and b) not sure if its required with the amount of videos out there already.
      As for the ASIO driver I am unable to refer to that as I am a Mac user and don’t use it with a PC. I do have access to a PC so could possibly try it out but I haven’t noticed any major issues with it hooked up to my Mac.
      Is your Mixcast connected straight to the PC or via a USB hub as I recall reading somewhere that latency could be an issue if using via a hub. Maybe it’s worth recording internally to the Mixcast rather than to Audacity.
      Not sure if this helps or not but keep on trying. I personally think it’s a great bit of hardware coming from the Rodecaster Pro 1 which I just didn’t really get on with for some reason. Shame as I love RODE products.
      All the best, Matt

    why are all these youtube videos hit with 30-35 input gain -12 and -6db with the rode podmic and mixcast 4? For me i cant hit -12db unless i increae the input gain to 50 which lead to mic leaks and to much noise. What am I doing wrong?

    • @realmattjc

      Hope you got it sorted.

    how am i not hittng the -12db unless i set the input gain for rode podmic to 50 on the mixacast? how do you do this?

    • @realmattjc
      @realmattjc  4 місяці тому

      What’s the issue with setting it to 50? Are you getting noise?
      To be honest I never had any issues with it. I’d always expect to potentially need to do post editing on the audio. I’d use something like audacity which is free.

    • @user-eo4vh2zc5k
      @user-eo4vh2zc5k 4 місяці тому

      I also get mic leaks, because the mic will then pic up other guests while they are talking to their mics. But we are using the same hardware (rode podmic and miscast 4) and there is other tutorials on youtube that they get to the -12db with 30 input gain, thats why i am wondering wht is the differece? It also like better to have the audio from the origin good which will make the post production editing much easier @@realmattjc

      @@user-eo4vh2zc5kI see. Good question. What is your recording space like. Has it sound proofing to absorb room noise. Could be the room has reverb noise from the audio bouncing around. Maybe you need to lower the gain to reduce that and go down post edit to normalise the levels. Really hard to answer as a remote commenter.

    • @user-eo4vh2zc5k

      I have tried In different environments, it still has the same issue. I know it is hard as a remote commenter, but it is just annoying that it works on everyone but me. Do you have like special setting for the eq or compressor or the noise gate?@@realmattjc

    • @realmattjc
      @realmattjc  4 місяці тому

      @@user-eo4vh2zc5k yeah I’d find that annoying too! I personally don’t use any of the effects. Not sure what I can really suggest on it tbh.

      lol ok ok ;). I'm seriously considering this mixcast deal from the tascam people. so your story is you had the original Rode thing and prefer this over that one?
      I like the set-up by the way.. plan on doing the same by connecting and recording to MAC vs exporting and all that junk. Nice going :)@@realmattjc

      @@coffeehigh420 hey there. Yeah so I can’t speak much for the newer Rodecasters but I definitely prefer the mixcast over the 1st gen.
      Thank you. It’s been some time in the making to be honest. This stuff just doesn’t come cheap. That said keep your eye on Facebook marketplace. You never know when a bargains coming knocking.
      Best wishes
