Scotty Kilmer can you do this for a 1999 v6 ford mustang. I've changed the egr valve but still throws the code
Scotty Kilmer get a cordless drill Scotty 😜
Scotty Kilmer Hi Scott. Can you tell me where my EGR part us in my truck ? I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado 2500 4wd 6.0l engine. It's an LT. I have tried almost everything ....this stupid truck is a pulling/ hauling truck. It pulls horse trailers ect...... .But here lately I. Loosing power. I was going up the Mountain after work today, and it lost power. It made it but at 15 mph all the way over. Then last week we had a friend that needed some stuff hauled to Landfill. It was only about 100 extra lbs, and once again lost power... help !! Thanks
You forgot to listen carburetor cleaner.
I thought this would damage the diaphragm. Yes/No?
I wish there was a product called, "Scotty in a can," where you opened it and a copy of Scotty popped, fixed your vehicle, and magically dissapeared when the work was done.
I'd expect some bonus questions and answers though.
id suply the beers :)
I'm with you on this one!!!😂😂😂
Thank you a lot Scotty. My Pontiac Torrent 06 got this kind of EGR valve and it used to got the same problem. The thief in the dealership wanted to change all the valve setup and charge me $600 (pieces + labor) for replace it. I almost snapped a tooth when he told me that.
You really give a COMPLETE guide of what to do and not only say "clean only the valve and that's all". Thanks.
@Scotty Kilmer You are awesome, Your no nonsense approach and directly to the point fixes are the best, I appreciate you for sharing this great information , many people would covet their little secrets and not share anything. Thank you so much for passing your many years of experience best advice to myself and others. You provide a tremendous service to society. You should feel proud as you deserve it.
🙏
TODAY IS THE DAY that I found the ONE video of the ONE engine that I have that for the SPECIFIC problem I am experiencing, and Scotty coming to save the day!!!
I fixed a 98 rodeo wich had the same code, the valve wasn't stuck but the carbon build up in the tube was very packed do i had to take the throttle body off and cleaned it with a clothes hanger, but this is a very good tip thanks Scotty
Scotty, I just did this to my Yukon......man you saved me about 500 dollars! Love your content, hope all is well with the move. Best wishes!!
What a coincidence! This morning I cleaned the egr on my 3.5 isuzu trooper. Thank you so much Sir. I'm a big fan of yours and every afternoon I check for new videos.
Scotty I don't not what we guys would do without you, Your a big help & THANKS
Me thinking: "I'll watch a couple of Scotty's EGR cleaning videos, one of them must have the same style EGR as my Isuzu."
Scotty: "...this Isuzu..."
Me: "Well, that's fortunate."
Thanks Scotty, hoping my Chevy Astro van runs better after cleaning the EGR. I had to do sooooo much effort to get to the EGR on this van its crazy
yes, a gallon of lacquer thinner to an almost full tank of gas, burns the sulphur off
Worked great for my car. Thanks Scotty.
I wish my EGR valve was that easy to remove
David Kroscen let's hope its not an EGR Valve for a CLK430 LOL!!
Ahhh. Mine is right on top.
Even if rusted out, get some WD40 and spray it and run the vehicle a couple of times, on your last run, spray the bolts with cold water when the engine is still hot and then try to remove the bolt, if you have an impact gun it will come off easy. I did this to a 2003 Honda Pilot that I thought for sure that it would break off because of the way it looked (almost melted).
Or clean
Yeah easy as... My golf mk5 was a b****d c***T of a job. Cleaned it like new. 250 miles later light and code came back. Inlet manifold needs cleaning too... I'm not doing it. I'm gonna spray it on the car. Too much of a mission
you make things easyer , thankyou for the tip
Scotty it's 2021 and this video is still teaching. Thank you very much!
This video really helped me understand the get valve so much better thank you
thank you so much! i will check the fan, and change the radiator...i will let you know what was the problem. Kind regards from Mexico!
Don’t you just love that sound Scotty makes when he tightens bolts? 🤣
Unnnh.- that’s about right.
That rotor rooter trick is a Scotty's original ...cool vid
Scotty, when you reamed out the EGR's intake passage (smaller opening) with the piano wire is there a danger of those carbon dirt chunks being sucked into the combustion chamber and messing up the engine? Similar to like when a car is run without an air filter.
Pull out the shop-vac ?
Hey Scott. Does a 2003 h2 hummer have a idle air control valve? I have the p0300 code and I'm taking steps to fixing the code. Thanks
yes, to clean them, but they rarely clog up inside on toyotas
often no symptoms at all, other than a check engine light on saying the egr system has a problem. It's an anti pollution system and cars often run better when they clog up
they will just get sucked into the engine and be burned up. It's not like they're steel or anything, small particles will just burn up
I've used my oil dip stick to clear out the EGR tube in the intake. It worked for a really clogged tube.
That's a good idea
Not recommended. Bad movr
MacGyver has approved your actions.
@@michaell3711 Why not? Cause u didn't think of it first? Lol
Thanks I will try before spending hours trying to find the right cable! I have N extra trans dipstick
"how to safely buy a used car' is already out there. I would buy toyota though
This was the most immaculate piece of mechanic Kung fu that I have seen. The speedorooter was exactly the trick! Thank you sir!
Ugh...my '03 Acura TL is notorious for this issue. It's not so bad if you do it once a year or two.
Thanks for the help man glad you make these extremely helpful videos and for responding
Once again, great info! Thank you.
Scotty do a video of your shop show your most used tools and the tools you are sorry you bought.
Oooh that drill is an oldie. Back when Black & Decker made a pretty descent unit before they got into the home depot & walmart line of cheaper tools.
Tha k you scotty Kilmer that did the trick 👍👍
you replace them, they really aren't repairable. You can mess with the spring tension on some, but that's just pot luck trying to hit it right.
I am not saying that it is wrong, but wouldn't it be easier to just replace the EGR Valve? I mean it is already older, and it may fail within a few months again, so instead of having an angry customer that has to comes back, you would have a happy customer with a new EGR that will last the rest of the life of the vehicle.
they are tiny little pieces, easily crushed and burned inside the engine
excellent video one of the best I've seen on cleaning that type of EGR valve. But I'm not sure what to think about the blowing part😃
Could have got a facefull of soot
hey scotty i was looking at a car on craigslist and it said its smoking but it needs new valve seals i was wondering how much it would run me if i bought it but most likely im staying away from it unless its cheap oh the car is a 97 Saturn SL2 by the way, thanks!
hi scottt. i have a 95 integra ls with an h22a swap. my check engine light comes on after driving down the road from a cold start. i ran the code and its an egr issue. the valve is good so i took the whole sha bang out. throttle body and intake. cleaned it all up and im putting it back together tomorrow. anyways, i hope it works and i wish i would have found this video befoe hand lol
good cars, but somewhat pricey for that age , though that's kilmometers and not miles, so not that bad.
I'm way late to the party on this one. but wouldn't you want to soften up the carbon deposit gunk/sludge before cleaning it off the passages, and THEN lube up the valve stem?
Does the carbon build up in the EGR valve also indicate carbon build up inside the engine?
not really
Not inside the engine (crankcase and moving parts) but inside the intake manifold and all the ducts where recirculated exhaust gases flow - yes. I had such an issue on BMW e39 diesel where diameter of intake manifold ducts were quite reduced by carbon deposits, even the car was running ok. I'd like to hear from Scotty or someone else what are the experiences and regulations about bypassing or completely removing EGR valve (and it's belonging components).
I love Scotty, how you go regularly beyond the prevalent 'find the faulty part and replace it' mentality. I believe that you provide a great service with these unOrtodox instructional videos for those, to whom car is not a luxury toy, but rather an essential tool of transportation, which has to be maintained in a pinch. Knowing how the average age of vehicles are rising the last few decades, we maybe in the majority too.
Hey scotty! Im in the proccess of doing this exact thing to my isuzu rodeo, except when i get the speedometer cable and put it down the smaller sized hole it comes to a stop and wont go farther i continue to drill and push but its at a stand still and makes some lee way. My egr valve port wasnt clogged and i cleaned it with wd 40 no need to push it with the carb spray. I then realized the small hole was clogged and found a lee way in it. Should i just continue drilling and tryjng to get through or is it fine the way it is? Going to put everyone on and test now thought id ask.
Where was this vid last year? Love your vids Sir, thanks you very much
I would use berrymans carb cleaner.
Where is it located on a 2001 Chevy Tahoe it would help if I could just clean it in stead of replacing
Thanks
yes, that's our old cat who is dying of cancer, a sad tale. It was her last big trip outside.
thanks! im going to buy a 1990 5.0 5 speed mustang lx now
It's long fixed, that's when I got it from a customer where it was hiding unused for 16 years. I like the smoke for the intro there, a little special effect action.
So some of what you did was while installed so can some of this stuff be done without taking that thing out. My 07 Commander with a 5.7 has made it not very easy to get to.
see my video "fixing ABS brake problems on your car" and realize that same computer is needed to analyze complex airbag systems. Most guys ignore it and use their seat belts.
Is it safe to spray carb cleaner into the egr pipes?
you're talking to an expert here. NEVER buy that VW, they are endless plastic money pits that fall apart as soon as you pay for them, or sometimes even while you're still paying.
may have just bent the dust shield on the brakes, pull the wheels and see if that's rubbing now. Pray it's that easy.
Thank you very much. Did this exact process to an 88 buick lesabre 3.8L. Works exactly like new.
you lose the egr valve function, which can make the catalytic converter run hotter and create more NOX gas.
Will the egr valve make a truck die while driving?
spanner light means a code has stored.
get that code from a scan tool, and e mail me that code
muchas gracias scott....thankyou for your valueble help
you could have a problem with the EVAP vent system, see that a lot with such a problem. when near E, there is a lot of empty space so the pump can push out fuel better with less resistance as a full or half full tank would have.
Hey scotty, I've been fixing a 2001 VW Jetta 1.8t for my sister for months. EPC light comes on, and the OBD-II scanner gives me about 10 or so errors. I replaced the throttle body, cleaned the EGR system, and had the "Throttle Pedal Actuator" (Gas Pedal) reset. Should i buy a new TPA? VW had to think outside the box and use an electric signal instead of fly-by-wire. any suggestions? Oh and it's a 5-speed.
Scotty I’ve been look everywhere for my wife EGR valve and I can’t seem to find it 2017 Nissan quest sv can. U help me out
they need to dry out a while, but cleaner will burn off and then run normally.
yes, if the mechanical fan is spinning fast and the clutch isnt' shot on it.
fixing cars is MuCH more than simple trouble codes. See my video "fixingmodern cars using high level scan computers" and realize a machine like that is needed to find such problems. Tons of data well beyond simple codes are in there to be analyzed, so find a guy like me with one of those computers
Thanks Scotty! Always appreciate your comprehensive, insightful and high-quality DIY videos.
Merry Christmas!

if it runs OK, live with it. If not, replace the distributor as the sensor is built inside that.
Is it ok to spray a small amount of carb cleaner down the two holes to loosen things up. Thanks bud.
I replaced two EGR valve in a week what can make it go bad
non interference unless at very high speeds.
Thank you so much!!! My Isuzu Rodeo had this problem and the engine light turned on before my inspection was due 😅
True life saver!
they are cheap crap cars, but if it runs and is cheap enough, oil doesn't cost much and I have a few customers driving junker saturns around for years. They just send em to the junk yard when anything major breaks down.
yes, but WD 40 would work a lot better
you would have to get the code and e mail me the code here. There are scores of different codes, so guessing is foolish.
And remember., Scotty knows his stuff. But he can be quite annoying at times. Haha
I have a 2001 ford F150 with the small v8 engine and 185,000 miles giving me the "P0401" code. It did that several years ago and I went thru the regular drill of cleaning including removing the intake in order to clean carbon off the 2 clogged ports. I just watched this video and was wondering if such a trick would work on my ford as it did on this vehicle. I really don't want to remove intake if can avoid it. THANKS. BOB
Hey do this it will work
Yeah, really long and crappy winter we are having this year. It's depressing.
yes, any metal cable thin enough to go in the holes
I wiped it off first.
injector assemblies come apart in those at that age, due to the over use of cheap plastic that cracks and leaks internally when that old. I'd bet the farm it's that.
tons of things wear out in old trucks, my advice, see a good front end man for a free analysis and estimate on what's really worn. replace the most worn parts first.
No, not necessarily. Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve would get carbon buildup from unburned fuel. There are numerous ways that this could happen. Bad spark plug, bad O2 sensor, bad vacuum line, blow-by, almost anything. Carbon build up inside the engine is usually blow-by, that has reacted to your oil. All cars have some blow-by, so it's by an individual case-by-case basis. You no longer see black soot [Carbon buildup] on tailpipes because of Catalytic Convertors.
many things can do that, but number one is big vacuum leaks, try my video "finding engine vacuum leaks with a cigar" and also pressure test the fuel pump, it may be going out.
Price that baby on an isuzu and you'll know why. cleaning can make that design last for years, then you just clean it again.
just take it off, throw it away.
Scotty, How can you test an EGR valve on an 88 nissan e16i?
try my video "fixing bad catalytic converters" and pray that cleaning works without buying a new cat
either the fan cooling the radiator isn't working right, OR the radiator is old and can't dissipate the extra head AC causes and needs replacing now
Just what i was looking for. I have the same problem. Thanks for sharing another great video.
Scotty, I have to replace the y-pipe on my Maxima. The car is very rusty underneath from the harsh Montreal climate/salt. Do you have any tips for removing exhaust parts on an older rusty car without it turning into a nightmare?
you can reset computer by unpluging batt and turn key
That EGR valve looks completely different than the one's I'm used to. I don't even know if I could identify one if I didn't have a service manual. The one on my Camaro looked a bit like a mini power brake booster. But, this is a neat trick for the modern valves...
it's running rich, leaking fuel injectors often do that. sometimes cleaning can help, try my video "how to clean fuel injectors on your car"
then the valve may be shot or the computer sending it power
Perfect. I just had this exact problem on my 2000 Vauxhall Frontera 3.2 which is that exact engine. Cheers dude. 👍
blower stopped blowing air from a massive melt down electronically due to the use of cheap parts.
try my video "how to fix a car that idles poorly"
yea, I keep my tools forever and the older ones keep on trucking while the newer ones break down like chinese motorcycles.
