I say get Dweezil! Dude based his style on Eddie. He begged his dad to get to know Eddie so he could meet him.
100% Dweezil could do it right.
Wolfe was playing with Eddie in the band at shows at 15, he captures that sound that Eddie had. And he times every note perfectly. My opinion, nobody should be playing the riffs Eddie played on guitar in a tribute band other than Wolfie. Go listen to Eddie play Eruption, then listen to Wolfie. You'll see what I'm saying.
I agree that Wolfie might be , if HE wanted to, a clear or direct choice for a EVH tribute show- but I would base that with how he played at The Taylor Hawkins shows, he showed what he could do in certain songs. But unless I haven’t seen it , I don’t know if any clip where Wolfie plays a complete version of ERUPTION where someone could compare against his dad. I’m sure though that he MUGHT be able to cover it correctly……. But he won’t. He said it endlessly these past few years.

Joe Satriani is a strict music theory kinda player. Joe has more musical knowledge in his pinky finger than what EVH had. Joe is a well practiced, well educated, very tight by the book guitar player. It's like the first chair violin player in a symphony orchestra type of player. EVH was the total opposite. Eddie was a case of when natural talent meets an obsessive amount of practice and crafting. Joe is very by the book. Eddie was "fuq that book and the books mama". What Eddie had can't be taught. His sense of rhythm was absolutely insane. Listen to the intro to "I'm the one" very simple riff. But the right hand rhythm of that song is nutty as fuq. Lots of people play Eddie's stuff. The riffs aren't terribly difficult. But they lose it with their right hand. It was his rhythm that people can't nail down. Eddie was just a peculiar creature like that. You can't duplicate EVH.
I think Satch will do a great job with this. Last thing I want to see/hear is some EVH clone.

Satch did the stern show with very little practice. Give him a couple of weeks and it's gonna sound awesome.

Eddie did say he kicked out Sammy because he did not have the work ethic to be in the band. As a musician, I can only imagine the dedication, time, and focus you would need to be in a band of that caliber.

I had the same thoughts as you on a great line up. Alex, Wolf, Mike, Dave and Sam. However, i'm willing to bet that will NEVER happen. Sam needs to go out, do his thing with Phil X, John 5, Dweezil or the likes if Joe doesnt' want to do it. Respect his wishes too, dont' be selfish.

I agree. He will have some sort of "conflict" come up. Or a "health issue." Or some other such shit. There is NO way that was the first time they played that shit when they were on Stern. That is laughable. They wouldn't go on there to promote a tour without having played all sorts of VH songs together already. The "no rehearsals" theme that Sammy repeated during that appearance was transparent ass covering.

1. It is SATriani, not SITriani. It is odd that you talk about this topic with such passion, but you don't even know how to say his name.
2. Not all of the music on Stern was bad. Mean Street sucked... Summer Nights was terrible. That stuff sounded like a newbie, frankly. However, Right Now was pretty good. The bulk of Best of Both Worlds was alright, but the solo was kind of cringey. He looked like a dufus when he tried to double tap. It is amazing that someone who is supposed to be a bit of a virtuoso himself can't really double tap at all.
3. The obvious answer is "Steve Vai." I don't know what their relationship is like these days, but if Dave is going to put together his own tribute tour, Vai is the "no duh" lead guitar, if they don't hate each other now. Vai should be doing it in the first place with Sammy. Or... Why isn't Vic Johnson doing it? He is clearly WAY better at playing Eddie's stuff than Satriani. Why didn't Sammy just do the tour with The Circle?
4. Wolfie's fat ass was great with Foo Fighters.
5. It is pretty clear that Alex is not going to do this tribute stuff.
6. As soon as Eddie died, I was envisioning one big concert, a la Freddie Mercury's tribute, to properly honor him. A whole slew of people could take part, and it would much better illuminate what a vast, overwhelming impact Eddie had on musicians everywhere, while simultaneously giving the fans something with which to sort of get some closure re: Eddie's death (and hear some really cool renditions of VH songs).
7. I love the guy as an entertainer... he was a huge part of my teen years... but Dave shouldn't be doing anything anymore. He sounds so fucking awful that I can't even describe it. He can't even do the low, talking stuff anymore. Everything is high, off pitch screeching. He never had Michael Buble's voice, but his voice is totally shot now. It is odd that he seems so oblivious to it. Is it an "Emperor's New Clothes" situation, with everyone in his world afraid to say anything? Can't someone come up with a way to help him sound presentable? It is embarrassing. It reminds me of the movie/person Florence Foster Jenkins.

If they can find a sincere, humble player who also wants to celebrate the life / times of EVH, then we can do it that way……but it doesn’t need to be a carbon-copy.
By example; when Queen celebrated Freddie at Wembley with all those singers and even having Extreme do a Queen Melody, no singer was there TRYING to be Freddie.

Fact: 5150 and OU812 SONGS WERE made for DAVID...DAVID LEFT SO SAMMY TOOK THE SONGS...SO basically the very best albums sammy did with van halen were REALLY MUSICALLY WRITTEN WITH DAVID in mind.
They literally wrote 5150 with Hagar. There may be some guitar parts left over but the lyrics are all Sammy.
