Nostalgia and hype gets a little boring after fifty years. The Beatles were great but decades of rehashing, hyperbole and squeezing every last dime out of them is spoiling it all (in my opinion). It's all a bit "Emperor's new clothes" at this stage. As others have said, it's time to let them be.

I always views the red album as a very significant record as it's the perfect introduction to the Beatles...it has all one needs to establish a first impression.
I'm lucky that I can vividly recall the precise moment that I became a fan of the Beatles. I can tell you where I was, and the song that unexpectedly drew me and the radio station that was playing it. A few months later I got the red album on vinyl as a Xmas present.
I played the hell out of it, and it led me to purchase many of their "American" albums on cassette. I can even recall watching and recording "Yellow Submarine" on VHS during this time.
I can remember buying my first Beatles poster which was a collage of pictures taken of them when they were recording "Revolver" and a few years later I bought a "Beatles '65" poster that I also hung in my room.
This period for me was the mid-1980's when I was in high school. Through the Beatles, I unearthed the '60's and discovered a unique world of music that expanded my horizons as a listener.
Up until then I listened only to '80's music which was and still is fantastic stuff. That's my era. But now the '60's joined that interest and gave me yet another world to explore and that led me to re-discovering the 1970's a little more closely.
That expansion of the mind and ears all began with that red album. Today I don't know if remixing and expanding that record, and the blue one, was a necessity. I still have my CD version of that album from roughy 17 years ago, and it sounds fantastic to me. Then I picked up the vinyl version two years ago and again, it sounds equally fantastic to my CD version, with a bit of a warmer presence, but I enjoy both versions regardless.
For me I don't see a need to buy the updated red album. I never owned the Blue album because I'm still not a fan of their later stuff for some reason.
The bus stops at the station with "Magical Mystery Tour" for me.

I think the Beatles should have re-issued the Red and Blue with new mixes and original track listings… but issued an entirely new “Green” album, 1962-70-23 and added the balance of the re-mixed songs (and perhaps some others) in one distinct package…and include Free as a Bird, Real Love and Now and Then. Green is a very contemporary colour/movement that the Beatles could support, and would create an entirely new product. As it came out, I find it wanting, and won’t update the 2014 vinyl editions of the Red and Blue I already own. Thx for a great channel. Cheers from Toronto. JPE

Thanks for the review. I'm 69 years old and basically grew up listen to (and loving) the Beatles, much like yourself. I think the "Red Album" is the real winner here, mostly due to the material being older and not originally recorded as well as their later years. Some of the old standards like "I Saw Her Standing There" sound new and fresh. The guitars are crisp and the drums are more prominent. Overall, I'm very happy with the remixes.

I seem to be the baby of the bunch here, I'm 55 and discovered The Beatles in 1979 when I was 11. The Blue Album was my introduction, outside of already knowing the solo works and radio songs you'd hear back then on FM Rock stations and AM Pop stations. When Sgt. Pepper remix came out I was excited to no end, and it just got better and better with each release. Let It Be, being the outstanding remix of them all. But these are all like rediscovering Beatles all over again. And with Now and Then, I kind of felt like an 11 year old discovering new Beatle songs for the first time. Or a 27/28 year old in 1995/96 with Free As a Bird and Real Love.
I'm very pleased with these. I also question the lack of, "Rain" and the ending of "Walrus", but I have my many other versions I can pull out and enjoy.

Not every remix is great, but so far 138 songs have received the remix treatment and I'd say a good 85% of them are clearly superior to the original mix. The remaining Beatles have themselves approved these remixes and indeed actively participated in them (and I'm positive if John and George were here, they would enthusiastically approve, as George did when "Yellow Submarine Songtrack" was released). So this IS what the band wants.

I'm 69 years old. I grew up with the Capitol Beatles albums and they were a huge part of my youth. Then when I was in my 20s I bought a couple of the UK LPs and a German With the Beatles-maily because of the covers. What a revelation! Th sound was much more revealing. I acquired a MoFi box set and at first was impressed with how quiet the pressings were, but realized the EQ was boosted in the bass. I still have it, but eventually completed my OG Parlophone collection, which are my daily drivers. I dutifully bought the Giles Martin Abbey Road, then Revolver and when I compared them to my originals, I heard little differences, but came to the conclusion that they were pretty pointless. The originals were pretty near perfect and had the advantage of being mastered from tapes that were at most 2 weeks old as opposed to 60 years old! If you don't have those, you really don't know what you're missing.

So glad you highlighted the Yellow Submarine remix; it is truly amazing. Not sure if you mentioned his name, but it was producer Peter Cobbin who gave the songs on that album their incredible sound. It was back in '99, and 'pre-AI' of course. It's a shame that Mr. Cobbin wasn't assigned to remix the entire Beatles catalog after that; all this present remixing would have been unnecessary. Hey Mazzy. I wrote to you once before. I'm from Berkeley. My favorite record store was Rather Ripped Records, so you can guess my age. I still have my 70s Beatles vinyl and my 80s and 90s Beatles CDs, but I never have owned any versions of the Red and Blue. I thought you would like to know that you, Joe, Larry, and others have rekindled my passion for the Beatles and I've ordered copies of the Red and Blue CDs from Target. Thanks so much for everything you give us. --Michael

If civilization is still around for the 100th Anniversary reissue of these albums, and I have a a good audio system in my cryo-tank (I’m 57 now, so that’s my only likely option), I’ll be excited to hear the vinyl version cued up and played for me. Just to hear what Apple Records is still holding back or otherwise tinkering with. I’m sure it will be worth the wait.

Putting it bluntly, when you own or have heard The Beatles in Mono, any stereo mix of pre 1968 Beatles music is rendered needless. Particularly when you've heard the mono mixes through headphones, the stereo mixes become virtually unlistenable. The new stereo mixes may be a minor improvement over the originals, but they still can't touch the monos

Hi Mazzy, I pre-ordered the 7 inch Now and Then in black. The independent record stores didn't get what they ordered. My order was canceled. They told me that blue and clear variant were in stock. I bought a blue one 💙. It will arrive next week.
I have watched many videos about the releases. I guess we are all excited.

I like the remixes although I only have UA-cam to go by using really good computer desktop speakers. On the red album, Ringo's drums get more clarity and the sound over all is more open. Some tracks benefit more than others but generally, the Red album is a must have in my opinion. The Blue, unless you have bought all the available Giles remixes, it's also worth getting. I will wait till the new year when the prices of the two sets come down. I agree Mazzy, no Rain is insane but at least the remix of Tommorrow Never Knows is great.

I really enjoyed your reviews. I am warning all friends / family / Beatle people to NOT watch any of these until they listen once or twice to form their own opinion. I heard differences but your review brought out what they were and made me go back into iTunes and listen to all the many versions I have from over the years and be amazed how much they changed. Being 67 I prefer the original but I GET why the remixes were needed for ear bud listening BUT ... Thanks again.

Great video as usual, Norman. You may have changed my mind about rethinking the idea of remixing classic albums especially Beatles. I guess if I’m gonna entertain Beatles remixes I might be better off with these two collections because I’ve had the same issue with being acclimated to the original flows song to song of original LPs. Maybe I’ll get the Red after all

Great review!! The Red/Blue albums were my introduction to the Beatles back in the mid 1970's. I still have those albums but they are in very sad shape. I bought a few US albums back then until I realized the UK albums were the ones to have and I bought the UK box set and still have that and it's in perfect condition!! So I bought the new Red album to hear these remixes of the early songs and I think they sound fantastic!! I won't buy the Blue album unless I can get it a lesser price. I agree with you that the Yellow Submarine remix is awesome. A lot of these remixes have been disappointing but the Red album is now my favorite remix. Thanks for the review.

    Good review Mazzy - Thanks.
Already have a 1973 german release and the 2014 version - but ordered this anyways 😅. Mostly to hear the early (red) songs with the MAL-de-/remix (the 2022 Revolver-box-version sounds great to me).
I’ll probably be most disappointed with that they didn’t put the “new”/added songs in the right chronological order, since I find this (and the possibility to follow their musical developement) is one of the great things w. the red/blue albums.

I've only listened to the Red album remixes so far but I have noticed that some tracks, with the bass and drums brought into much clearer focus, almost feel imperceptibly like their foundations have subtly shifted, there's a new rhythm appeared, different to the oh so familiar feel we have come to know and trust over some 40 plus years.

This is such a great video, sensible comments about a personal view of these new 2023 releases, pluses and minuses on a lot of the tracks. Do I agree? Hell no, but then I'm only listening to the new CD's and these are my first copies so I have nothing to compare them against, but I thoroughly enjoyed this video, an honest set of opinions without ramming them down my throat. Nicely done Norman, nicely done.

Hi Mazzy, excellent appraisal. Just for the record (excuse pun) it was a guy called Allan Steckler who worked for Allen Klein, who compiled both 62-66 and 67-70. He'd also compiled Hot Rocks with the Stones' stuff. There's an interview with him in the Janauary 2024 issue of Mojo magazine, out now.

I’m in that generation (in my late 50s) who are just slightly too young to remember the Beatles when they were still together, but my first musical memories are kind of the aftermath of their influence. My parents had the Blue Album so that was my first introduction to the band, and the album still has sentimental meaning to be because of that time. Not sure I’ll ever get these newer versions but interesting to hear about them all the same. I wonder in 50, 60, 100 years from now what will be the default versions that people will hear, the originals or newer cleaned up remixes/remasters?

The Beatles focussed on mono, so it makes sense to me to start and update from there. I find that approach warm, rich, and tasteful. McCartney and Starr approved every mix and made changes if needed. They said they aimed for a sound that if The Beatles had today’s technology, that’s what you get. These are my 12 year old son’s favourite albums! Especially I am the Walrus (which he prefers over the old stereo mix). I agree with him!

I wanted to tap you on the shoulder as you got to the Blue tracks and remind you that everything from: Revolver / Pepper / White / Abbey & Let it Be were not freshly remixed for this, but are from the anniversary reissues of 2018 and such.
    And Hell Bulldog ?
Every mix, Including Songtrack !, has left out a quick little touch that Geoff Emerick was so delighted to mention in an interview from decades ago....
They added ADT JUST to John's "you know anymore ??".... and no one has remembered to add that touch since !!

I've only heard these new mixes through the Dolby Atmos mastering on Apple Music. I think they generally sound fantastic-Hard Days Night, We Can Work It Out, Day Tripper and If I Needed Someone are total standouts. I love the peak the band builds during Day Tripper during the guitar break--can't say I ever picked up on that before. The one track that I thought lost all it's punch was Eight Days A Week--the fade in lost all it's power and John's vocal had no punch when he started singing
