    Truth - I hated the idea at first, but then I considered none of the pre-Revolver material was remixed at that time, so I compromised. I downloaded the compilation on I Tunes and again for the blue album tracks which weren't remixed just yet - Magical Mystery Tour, etc., I also hated the idea of two LPs being jammed into one sleeve on the jacket. I got over that to day when I went to a record show and picked up the vinyl edition of the red album. Thinks change - let it be.

    My main complaint was that the boxset wasn't a package of Please Please Me and With the Beatles. They missed a true 60th Anniversary. Session outtakes and demos. Hopefully the MAL technology will be applied to the Star Club performance.

    Enjoyed your take on the red and blue remix. Like you I wasn't excited about Apple giving us this in place of Rubber Soul but like any fan I put my money out there. To me everything was OK except Walrus,Revolution, No Where Man and Old Brown Shoe. You can say well we still have the original but after awhile the original becomes harder to find and new fans will use this and maybe never hear the originals ( heaven forbid) but all in all I have gotten use to this set and hopefully they will fix the mistakes on future releases. Take care!

    The 2014 vinyl releases of the Red & Blue albums are still good to have as they use the original stereo & mono analog masters. I enjoy the 2023 releases of the Red & Blue compilations, but as Brian stated of the new stereo remixes, half I really love and half I question because some of the original elements are missing.

      Respectfully I meant missing elements such as the King Lear recitation at the end of "I am the Walrus." You can't hear the "Bury my Body" bit. "Old Brown Shoe is missing the guitar mix. "I Feel Fine is missing the whispering in the intro and the dogs barking at the end etc.@@danerd8978

      Respectfully, on some of the 2023 remixes, there are a number of missing elements such as the complete king Lear recitation at the end of "I am the Walrus." On "Old Brown Shoe" George's guitar lead is mixed way down. The intro to "I Feel Fine" is missing the whispering as well as the dogs barking. "We Can Work It Out" the harmonium is almost mixed out of it.@@danerd8978

    Hey Brian, wow...what a video and review. That's a lot to cover and I really enjoyed it!
    I honestly heard enough on this box set to actually tell the stark truth that I went back to the Capitol pressings that I grew up with since I was an infant and emotionally felt rejuvenated afterwards. Meaning that my ear has always leaned towards to the reverb-drenched versions of She's A Woman and I Feel Fine from Beatles 65' and so many others I've always known front to back and blindfolded. A lot of folks generally don't like those mixes and I completely get why. But I'm American and those were all we had. Plus they're significantly sentimental to my musical heart because of my father.
    And I never was exposed to the UK versions and mixes until 1987 into 1988 when they were first surfacing on CD.
    I appreciate the effort that Giles and his team have put forward and the painstaking hours that were invested to make these remixes. But in the end, I still go back to the originals. It's a lot like knowing a redhead that you've always had a crush on and you know her curves and you've studied her personality all these years, to have her come back with lesser curves, the red in her hair has been replaced with light brown, her skirt that once hugged her hips are now looser and her frame has been slightly altered. We all have memory banks that we stay faithful to and you mess with it too much, it can be a turn off for some and they want the original way it looked and felt from the beginning.
    Keep up the good work Brian and I hope Fatherhood is treating you well so far.

    Good to hear your take on it. I was happy to give it the go-by, I feel I'm missing nothing- - but annoyed this superfluous project has delayed the awaited *RUBBER SOUL* SDL & *every other SDL release* by a year. I was looking forward to whatever alternate takes & studio talk they had from 1965, which of course is entirely absent from Red/Blue.

    Great video. I agree with most of it, like 95%. All fans are complaining about "Walrus". How can that track escape the "quality control" from Yoko/Sean, Ringo, Paul??. I wonder. The songs that we have the most complaining are John's or George's. Same goes with tracks on the deluxe editions, like "Yer Blues", "Come Together", "She Said She Said". Always John's songs. Paul's songs are in general, very good or excellent.
    I don´t wanna be paranoid here or conspiracy theorist, but why Paul's songs are treated so perfectly by Giles??.
    Anyway. It's good to see your videos again man!

      you know, facts are facts and there does seem to be something to this. and from what i've read it was Paul that said to Giles, go crazy on Walrus. so it's possible that since Paul is still here, he looks after his songs a bit more and leaves the other songs in the hands of Giles and the audio team.

    So for I am The Walrus what I happened was 1) the parts that they got from the radio the sounds are in the original mix they might have added a few new ones to the track.2) The drums are off by not much like with Nowhere Man.3) The stereo image is super small. I compared the 2009 to the 2023 mix

    I'm playing the LP edition of the new thing now and, you're right, She Loves You sounds like hell - the rest of the tracks are really bright and popping out now - really well-rounded sound. That hi-hat in Nowhere Man IS distracting, but it's still a good mix overall. There are some tracks (such as Paperback Writer) on which you can really hear Ringo's drumming (feels like the first time, really 😂😂)

    Welcome back! I got the digital download because I preferred the running order. I look as these remixes as alternative listening experience. They in no way replace the original mono and stereo mixes. With that in mind, I found most of these remixes very enjoyable. I actually enjoyed the controversial I Am The Walrus remix. My only major disappointments were She Loves, which sounded very low-fi and Now and Then, which was totally brickwalled at least on the digital version. I do plan to pick up the LP box, when the price bottoms out.

    I prefer the CDs of this release, which put the expanded track lists into proper chronological order; the vinyl albums ruin the mood by sticking all the new additions on an extra disc, which makes it impossible to play everything chronologically. Plus the two CDs comfortably fit into their jacket, unlike the 3 LP discs. I don't know why such sloppy work was done on the vinyl package; usually you expect value from this outfit.

  • @girlswanted7
    @girlswanted7 2 місяці тому +1

    Definitely not a bummer, Giles shouldn’t tamper with the deluxe box set remixes as they sound amazing. This set you also get the new mastering. That being said Giles should only d mix pre 1966 tracks which is the only real way to remix the songs. Later tracks can be remixed off the multi tracks ala Sgt.Pepper style. D mixing can be complicated and songs like Walrus Giles dropped the ball on. He especially dropped the ball on Old Brown Shoe where he forgot to bring the guitar feeder up (35 second mark). Overall Giles did do a nice job on the d mixes though. Some of the vocals or guitars could have been brought up, but the music itself is outstanding. I do miss the high end vocals of Eight Days A Week and Help from the 2015 1 remix.

  • @girlswanted7
    @girlswanted7 2 місяці тому

    Careful what you wish for. This is why 1967-1970 Beatles tracks should be remixed off the multi tracks instead of the d mix process. It’ll avoid the Walrus/ Old Brown Shoe debacle.

    The problem with revolution 2023 is that Giles kept all the guitars on one channel, instead of doing what he did on the love album , where John guitar was on one channel and George on the other , which gives a more powerful stereo image , here he was very conservative , it sounds louder but with no power because of that original panned guitars . A missed oportunity

I don’t like any of the work of Giles Martin. I think he is the wrong person to be remixing and remastering the Beatles cataloged. Perhaps, however! Nothing is lost by remixing. We still have access to the original mixes. Remixing Beatles music is as old as Beatles music. Capitol did it in the 60s. Germany did it in the 70s (looking at Magical Mystery Tour), hell, George Martin remixed Help and Rubber Soul in the 80s

    I think the whole project was a waste of time. All the remixed red album tracks don’t hold a candle to their original Uk stereo counterparts in my opinion. Revolution sounds better than the 2009 stereo remaster, but it’s still missing balls… MMT sounds amazing especially when comparing the 2009 stereo remaster on headphones. Fool is slightly better than the 2009 stereo remaster. Hey Bulldog sounds amazing, but I wish Giles brought out the background chatter towards the end more like the 1999 Yellow Submarine remix. Again, Giles needs to go a little further with some of these tracks.

    My oppinion: She Loves You, A Hard Day's Night, Nowhere Man, I Am The Walrus, Old Brown Shoe and Hey Bulldog; they've done a real bad job. She Loves You sounds like a ruined 45 single. I didn't like the louder percussion on A Hard Day's Night. The second half of I Am The Walrus was destroyed. Revolution, dissapointing, the Love version with John's and George's guitars separated is way better. The snare overdubb of Hey Bulldog is too much loud and with too much reverb, didn't fit. And what they've done with Nowhere Man, my favorite song ever, was unforgiveable, a total shame.
    All My Loving, And I Love Her, I Feel Fine, Help, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, Penny Lane, All You Need Is Love, Ballad of John & Yoko; I didn't hear too much difference but the sound is more crisp on all.
    I Want To Hold Your Hand, Eight Days A Week, Yesterday, If I Needed Someone, Girl, I Saw Her Standing There, You Can't Do That, Magical Mystery Tour, The Fool On The Hill and Dear Prudence are my highlights, really love them, specially the clean intro on Dear Prudence, fantastic. The best of all of both red and blue is the boosted drums, they finally made justice for Ringo, always burried on most of the stereo mixes.
    The rest is ok to me. These remixes are good but they won't take the place of the originals. No way! 😂

  • @craigwarner6156

    Brian what do you think about the way they re recorded everything? Did you know this? They didn't just take the stems after they were demixed, they actually played them through into studio 2 at abbey road and recorded that, as if the Beatles were playing it all over again and then they mixed the recordings after putting it through the studio. Which to my mind is mental. You've just degraded the quality by playing the stems through an amped system through the studio and then you've degraded the quality again by recording that onto tracks and recording the results. MY GOD WHY?

    • @BrianBringelson
      @BrianBringelson  2 місяці тому +1

      I think this might be slightly misunderstood (and I was one of the misunderstood at first). What they did was to add the room sound (and in 80% of the tracks, THE exact room) to obtain a sense of space. It's a similar method they use to add reverb. They send the signal out into a space, record the room, then blend it into the original sound to give it some depth. So they aren't taking away any quality of the sound, just adding to it. And in the case with demixed tracks, they've been pulled from a source and are then completely flat and lifeless. Meaning no room sound or any other sound around them. It's kind of like cutting out a face from a picture and then gluing it back into another photo but adding a bit of shading to make it fit in it's new home. I hope that makes sense. Either way, I do think they may have gone a bit overboard in some cases (Hey Bulldog comes to mind). Thanks for your very important and interesting comment.

    • @4-dman464
      @4-dman464 2 місяці тому +1

      @@BrianBringelson That's fascinating: "They send the signal out into a space, record the room..." So it's a sonar reading? same principle? A signal that's broadcast in the room bounces off the walls/ceilings & these rebounds are recorded as a track?
      Is the signal a sound wave that carries a sound & then the signal is cut off the tape-recording so that only the echo of the room is left on tape?
      I don't quite understand this - - but it is well worth a video investigating what is done/not done & what sound effect it adds & what, if anything, it negates in the process. I'll ask around.
      The whole idea of recording SPACE without sound is intriguing & befuddling. The only instances that I understand require a *sound* to be recorded because it is the reverberations of that sound which give the idea of room space on tape by virtue of the degree of echo.
      Like a submarine sonar bounced off the sea-bed.
      Or is the signal *not a sound wave* but a light-emitted-diode & so LIGHT-not-audio equipment records the inaudible reverberations of the light-wave? And is the measurements of the reverberation of the light-wave then *converted* to the degree of echo which is then imposed on the demixed Beatles track? so that the sound of the room is replicated?

      @@BrianBringelson Thanks for explaining this Brian. I do now completely understand the idea behind it now. And it makes sense. The M.A.L. tech is so good at isolating the instruments that they seem a little dead because it's accurately just the guitar or drums or whichever instrument and it's cut away the space and air around the instrument sounds and so by playing them through the studio again they regain the air and openness they lost in isolating it.
