- In this session of Biology of Orthodontics Dr Alikhani describes the response of sutures to orthopedic forces.
While maxillary expansion is traditionally described as a physical phenomenon, this process requires a complex biological response similar to the response observed in the periodontium after application of orthodontic forces.
Here Dr Alikhani explains the Biphasic response of sutures to orthopedic forces which starts with activation of osteoclasts, that go on to resorb bone, widening the sutures, creating space for the expansion while helping dissipate dangerous forces. Osteoclasts, then activate osteoblasts, the cells that deposit bone and re-estalblish the integrity of the sutures after expansion. In this presentation, he also discusses important clinical implications of these biological findings, which allow you to optimize clinical care during maxillary expansion.
