Eugene, Oregon - On the night of April 22, 2024, Washington State law enforcement issued an Amber Alert for a young child kidnapped by his father, 39-year-old Elias Huizar, who was wanted in connection with two murders. On April 23, 2024, Oregon State Troopers, Sgt. OJ Johnson and Sr. Trooper Scott Show located the suspect vehicle heading southbound on I-5 near Eugene. Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle; Huizar didn't comply and a pursuit was initiated. Supt. Casey Codding joined the pursuit. Sr. Trooper Show attempts to stop the vehicle with a redirect. As Huizar vehicle continues to elude, a second redirect is attempted. Huizar stops and fires at responding troopers.
Sgt. Johnson and Supt. Codding return fire. 30 sec. later the pursuit resumes southbound on I-5. Near milepost 197, Huizar moves to the highway shoulder, crashes into a CMV, and comes to a stop. Pursuing troopers arrived at the crash scene and a team of officers assembled and advanced on the vehicle to attempt contact with Huizar. Huizar was confirmed deceased by a self- inflicted gunshot wound and the 1-year-old child was safely rescued. _Who is Elias Huizar?_
Huizar was a former Yakima Police officer and a school resource officer (SRO) at Washington Middle School in Yakima. In early February, Huizar was arrested for the rape of a child. According to legal documents, his 17-year-old girlfriend had a friend over. Huizar is accused of giving them both alcohol, and both fell asleep. The documents say the girlfriend woke up to Huizar sexually assaulting her unconscious 16-year-old friend. The other teen woke up during the assault and the pair took the then 10-month old and left (that child is the 1-year-old who was abducted). He followed them in another car while the teens drove around, looking for police. When police went to arrest him for that, he ran back into the home and barricaded himself inside. A SWAT team was called in. After three hours, he was arrested. Huizar posted bail. The legal documents said that Huizar had met his girlfriend while he was a school resource officer at her middle school. He got her pregnant at the age of 15, while he was still employed at the school. That teen was 11 when the pair first met. She reported the inappropriate contact with Huizar, but charges were dropped. She claims they reconnected after he reached out via Facebook. They initiated a sexual relationship and their child was born a year later. Huizar worked for the Yakima Police Department previously, but "left the department after receiving discipline in late 2021," the department said in a statement. It's unclear what that discipline was for.
_Protection order filed for ex-wife_
Just days after Huizar was arrested for the child rape charges, his ex-wife filed for a protection order against him. She told the courts that this was the second time she applied for one, and that she "believed our children are in danger if the respondent [Huizar] is allowed visitation" of their two children. The filing called for an immediate protection order and immediate weapons surrender from Huizar. The ex-wife wrote in her filing that during their marriage, he was emotionally and verbally abusive. She also said that on multiple occasions, Huizar would have sex with his ex-girlfriend right in front of their shared children while the kids were at their dad's house. She alleges that Huizar and the girlfriend would have explosive arguments, which sometimes ended in violence that the kids saw and reported back to their mother. His ex told the courts that Huizar took their two children in 2021 and enrolled them in a school without her permission. She didn't see them for three weeks. According to her, Huizar suffered from PTSD, major depressive disorder, insomnia, alcohol use disorder and an unspecified personality disorder. It's unclear if the protection order contributed to the shooting, which took place about two weeks after it was filed.

EDIT: He was released on the second-degree rape charge (weirdly low/little for what he apparently did) on a $200,000 bail, 10% (bail bond) of which he had to actually pay to get released. The thing is: The dude was a 39 year old cop who committed a violent crime which would net him at least a decade in prison, plus several other potential charges (how did he have a child with his 17 year-old GF?). He had nothing left to loose and obvious self control issues. That is an incredibly dangerous kind of person.
And no, obviously I'm not blaming a potential bail bondsman, I mean the DA's office who asked for that amount of bail.

I think it’s just gotten to the point where LEO will longer allow it to get any further than it needs to be, meaning they take the shot as soon as they get their chance, in the car or not. So I don’t think there’s necessarily training but I’m sure it’s a lot more talked about now within pd’s

I was at a HS football game where my son was the drum line leader. I got taken down by three sheriff deputies and arrested when I confronted the younger one (26 I think) for harassing my son about an expired car tag and hitting on 9th grade girls. My son had previously reported him to the principal. My charges were eventually dismissed. Unfortunately I was banned from all school system properties for 9 months due to my arrest. I missed my son’s senior year in the marching band. When I took my court order dismissing my case to the principal, he said “You don’t owe me any explanation. That deputy has been fired for misconduct with underage girls here at the school. We should have listened to you and your son. You are welcome on this campus any time. You’re back in the family.” Deputy was never prosecuted.
After reading the details this man was a terror & very dangerous! Thank God the little guy was rescued & thank God these officers went home at the end of the day! It’s times like this that our officers deserve our love & respect!

Ridiculous the stigma surrounding police hiring. It's not perfect, but it's significantly more stringent than nearly any other hiring process for any other profession.

Hope to see an update on Mr. Edwards Lawsuits soon. I looked at Lee County public records and only saw his felony case with a next court day in July. Perhaps since his bond is about $200,000 and he is still in custody he hasn't had the opportunity to get the lawsuit ball rolling. The system should not be so tough on him. He has been booked into the Lee County jail only 6 times since 2018.
He was being charged with rape of a minor. That kid in that car was the result of that rape. He killed his wife and that kids mom before this event. What a weak human

I live in the area where the initial shooting happened. The dude was messed up and should have been in prison. He was a substitute teacher at one of the smaller outlying towns, killed his ex-wife on school grounds, then it was discovered that he had killed his ex-gf already and that he had kidnapped his son. He had been a former SRO in Yakima, WA and been accused of touching kids but the school never reported it to the agency (Yakima County Sheriff) that he worked for so when he applied to become a substitute teacher, the new school district (West Richland SD) wasn't told about any of it by the Yakima County Sheriffs.

My family and I were staying a hotel near La Pine, Oregon, when we got this Amber Alert for the dude. It came in late at night so it spooked the whole family since we were in an unfamiliar area, in the potential area of this dude. The Amber Alert said he was going to likely flee to Mexico from Washington, which would mean he’d pass through Oregon. We were not too incredibly far from where this happened.
