I'm a recent GIS graduate making a career change in my late 30's. It's been extremely difficult trying to get first GIS job. I really needed to hear this. You made my entire week. TY
As a current GIS student I struggle with impostor syndrome often. One day in a moment of anxiety, I deleted my entire LinkedIn summary because I felt others would think I was overhyping my skills. Recently I stopped diving so deeply into other people's accomplishments and am focusing more on the enjoyment my current projects give me. It's helped a lot. I'm going to make use of your tips as well. Thank you so much for sharing! It helps to know I'm not alone in these feelings.
I needed to see this today! I am almost a year into my GIS Analyst position and I desire to ask for a raise, but feel incompetent to ask for it because I feel that I've duped my company somehow with my GIS skills and yet I know that I have learned A LOT in a year, in a niche industry. I know that my time spent working with an aerial imagery company and as a Technical Trainer aren't for naught. Thank you for talking about this topic and I just discovered your channel. Can't wait to see what else you put out!
Great video Katie and spot on. I've been in the GIS industry for over 25 years working for the same government agency and I have felt like this often over the years. I've worked with many bright people in the GIS industry over my time here and sometimes felt like I knew nothing. I then remember all the things I've done to get to the level of GIS knowledge that now have and I realized that I do know a lot about GIS and that I am the expert now. I might know about the latest greatest new app from ESRI, but I'm smart enough to figure it out with a little bit of effort.
I'm getting into the GIS field with an IT PM background. I'm constantly feeling like an imposter, it's challenging! I came across your video and it helped quite a bit. Thank you for sharing! Looking forward to binging all your videos haa
this is fantastic, thanks for sharing, Katie! i've felt this way so many times too and i also found that if i wrote down what i had accomplished in a day and looking back at it at the end of the week i felt a lot better about myself.
Some of what you are describing is the Zeigarnik Effect: We tend to forget the things we finish. We can learn from the tasks we've moved to done. "Done" is a wonderful thing. Analyze your finished tasks by asking "what I liked," or "what I hated." What could you do better?
Hi Kate! I have been subscribed to you for a few months now, and I love your content. It’s so refreshing to see GIS content on UA-cam (besides arcmap tutorials haha). I saw your name on ESRI’s IMGIS website for the conference! I was wondering why your name looked familiar and I realized I’m subscribed to you haha. I am presenting at the conference as well!
@@KatieScheurer You are welcome! & same! I work in the electric industry in SC. We definitely should meet up! I’m looking forward to all the presentations & to actually be at an in person conference 🤩
Hey, I've watched a bunch of your videos but I'm looking for information on where to start, I know school is probably a decent answer for that eh. What are some resources I can use besides school to start learning and are there any certification programs that I can do online or attend to gain further knowledge ? Thank you much!
Take it is small chunks and as long as you keep going you will get there. Just don’t forget to look back and appreciate how far you have come from time to time.
Hi Katie, thank you for the many very informative videos. Could you do a video discussing the computer system requirements for GIS students? I have a spec list which I accessed for ArcGIS, but I am aware that more computer power is better, but I am not sure how much is enough or too much. For example, is 32gb RAM enough with a 4 GHz CPU and fast graphics GPU?
Hi, I have MSc in agriculture and I want to get certificate in GIS that can help me in agriculture in Remote sensing and totally I can work by computer and maybe at field both. I don’t want get degree just I want get 1 years certificate or less. Do you have any ideas how I have to start and what I need? Thank you
Also - I have an engineering background and I absolutely LOVE working with maps. Do I need a 2 year degree to get into the field? Or can I get a few ESRI Desktop Certs that could land me an intro position?
If you are able to get a certificate and prove you know the software you should be able to find a position. But check job postings in your area to see what they are requiring. If you meet the general requirements, you will be good.
Hii ma'am, I'm from India and wanted to masters in GIS in USA. I have to take 65k USD education loan inorder to study masters in GIS. Will this be worth it or should should I see alternative. I should be able to repay my loan also. Please answer me...
It is hard for me to tell you if it is worth it or not. It really depends on the career that you want and if the sacrifice to of your time and money is worth that goal. I go into more details about that in this video. ua-cam.com/video/uXHxoo-t8x8/v-deo.html
