What if Silverstone Still Had Bridge Corner?

  • Another quick fun one for you- whenever I talk about the old Silverstone layout it's always the same: They should never have got rid of Bridge corner. Is that nostalgia talking? Probably.
But through the magic of simulation we can get an idea of what the lap times would be like if F1 still used this layout and not the current layout which, controversially, I think is better. Switchback City from turn two to Luffield.
So then, let's look at this classic layout, and see how F1 cars would fare.

Whilst it was a shame to lose Bridge corner, these videos show that it would essentially be an acceleration zone nowadays. The new circuit produces better racing with another good straight into Brooklands, and the Brooklands/Luffield section flows much better due to the less tight entry into Brooklands, providing some genuine side by side/switchback opportunities going towards Copse.

I think people have a lot of nostalgia for what were challenging corners (or at least ones which required bravery to turn into) in cars of the period. Those same turns are no longer such a challenge. You used to have to shift in Eau Rouge, for example.

Minor note, if you maximise track width on entry (looked like you were leaving a foot or so) you don't have to yeet it at the apex so hard and you'll carry more speed without upsetting the car. Obviously not as critical in racing where the potential loss of putting a wheel in the dirt is greater than the gain but in quali it can make all the difference.

Funny when we say 'the old layout', the response ought to be 'which one?' There's plenty. It's jarring looking back even to the 80s. There's Bridge, there's Stowe... Wait a second, where's Maggots-Becketts-Chapel? What weird alternate universe is this? When us millenials say 'the old layout' we mean this one. *The* old layout, the one I first watched on ITV. How many regenerations has the place had? I miss the thrill of Bridge flat out, but it's really the speed that sells it, not any moves, which were indeed hard to pull off in the day. Even when people talk about Barrichello-Raikkonen in '03, it was more forcing the other guy to make a mistake than overtaking. If Bridge was still there, it would at least show more clearly that there is some bloody elevation change at this circuit, Alex Jacques, stop saying it's completely flat!
It also occurs to me that once it's been around about 5 years or so, you can't call it 'new' anymore. We really ought to know the corner names in the first sector, but I bet people still call them the new corners and don't know their names. It sounds strange to call it the 'new' Hockenheim, since it's been around over 20 years. Sakhir and Shanghai mark 20 years next year, so it'll soon be time to start calling them historic circuits. Jesus, I'm getting old.

I'll never understand why they changed the layout. I mean, I'll bow to those who actually visit the place and say it's better, and I completely understand that they had to upgrade the facilities - some of the stories have to be heard to be disbelieved - but as far as I'm concerned the actual track layout had peaked. The thing is, now I've hit middle-age I realise just how recent that "classic layout that had always been there" really was. Oh well.

As well as the loss of Bridge, I would point out that the subtle alteration of Club was really unneccesary and over-complicating a corner that worked extremely well. The Abbey chicane was a great overtaking opportunity because of the way a defending driver had to handle the previous section -- Hangar Straight, Stowe and Vale , accelerating through Club with many moves finished at Abbey or even Bridge (see Barrichello's heroics at the 2003 British Grand Prix).
And the Abbey chicane was a corner that worked really well, just loved that corner in Grand Prix 4. Unfortunately it didn't work for bikes (insufficient runoff) so MotoGP needed a new layout... a pity they had to put two new hairpins in it, although the new Abbey and the "new" Brooklands are great corners (Brooklands not technically new because it was already on the club circuit).

I just don't get on with new Silverstone. I've driven it in everything from hot hatches to supercars and beyond, and S1 has no flow whatsoever. I can acknowledge it is an objectively good racing circuit whilst subjectively preferring Donnington, Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, etc. It's actually similar to problem to COTA and the USA. The country has so many legendary (and downright supperior) tracks--Road Atlanta, VIR, Watkins Glenn, Sonoma, Laguna Seca, Atlanta Motorsports Park, Mid Ohio, Road America, etc., but COTA (much like Silverstone) is the only circuit in the country to hold a Grade 1 FIA license, so it unfortunately recieves the most attention.

@greengringolr , depends on your standard for "good". If overtaking is the standard, the new circuit is a considerable improvement. If flow, elevation change, and corner diversity are the metrics, the old circuit was better.
