Haha, I love your introduction, the possession of a movie pass is the only reason I would have went to see it in theaters, my interest in this movie was casual at best.
The best part of this was the outtakes! Reminds me of when I'm recording for VO auditions. Now I know what my wife and kids hear and feel like during my recording sessions lol!
btw glad you're back! Missed your videos. I personally thought that the theme of not knowing who you could trust was so fitting for Han's character, but that it was very underdeveloped and underutilized. If it had been built on more in act 2 it would have naturally built tension between characters and led to a lot of character development on Han's part, and the relationships he had with the other characters, making Act 2 much more meaningful and enjoyable and act 3 less rushed. Overall it was a movie that I rather enjoyed, but maybe just cause I had low expectations. Not to say I thought it would be bad, but I thought it was very unnecessary. The Villian was definitely a strength, as was Chewy, and I agree that the old crew would have been better than Lando and L3. As far as L3 goes, I interpreted her activism as a joke and not to be taken seriously at all.
Solo: A Star Wars Story : "Not quite as bad as it could have been". Isn't an unfair estimation, I personally found it painfully dull and visually un-engaging : I don't think it even looked like the same Universe due to how it's shot. Even The Last Jedi doesn't make that mistake. It's sort of like the (trying to be) "Gritty tone" of Rogue One with a Movie that doesn't seem to know what it's trying to do. I got the impression at times I was watching a very poorly written comedy where none of the jokes land. Give me a month and i'll have almost Forgotten it exists (Like Ready Player One).
The dullness set in for me in the middle. I agree that it wasn't visually exciting. Like a dusty old bookshelf. I enjoyed Ready Player One on 1st viewing with friends, but I wonder if I overrated it because of the good time I had with them, rather than the movie.
I had to leave probably 15 minutes before the ending because my five year old was so board there was a little sobbing going on. I left right after the first twist involving Beckett. My problems with the movie, I didn’t see Solo grow or change at all. Lots of missed opportunities for this. Like going to war (like you said, they should have spent more time there). Being reunited with a drastically different Kira. Being let down by Lando and Beckett. All had no affect. Granted I missed the last 15 minutes (I’ve read the spoilers). That’s a couple hours with no character development. I liked your ideas about the Beckett/Solo dynamic. Missed opportunity there too. Lando had no redeeming characteristics.
Definitely, ChadDad123. Funnily enough, there is a big moment between Han and Beckett in the last 15 minutes, which implies that Han has been affected by all his experiences... but, as you said, Han hasn't been changed or moved by anything throughout the film. So this BIG moment is more of a, "Oh, I see what you were going for..."
Not planning on seeing this or any other Star Wars till I hear they've chagned direction. The last one was so insulting and had zero scenes with internal consistency. After watching another review, it sounds like a lot of these parts didn't make sense either. Are all droids just slaves now and we must re-evaluate the oppression of R2 and C3PO? Han's a Gary Stew now? Just good at everything for apparently no reason. HOW the heck did this get 2.5 and DP2 only got 3?!? Thas messed up. :P
See, I'm confused about this Droid stuff, too. Is it just a character quirk? Or am I meant to take L3's politics seriously? Is there a future Droid liberation story in the works? Han as a Gary Stew? Not sure... He gets chastised by Woody Harrelson at one point for an iffy decision. While we don't see him acquire his skillset, there's a 3 year time-jump, at one point. During that time, he supposedly went to the Imperial Flight Academy and then completed Basic Training to be an Imperial Soldier. Those things would explain his flying expertise and weapon-handling. There's also a car chase, in which he gets the car stuck. Plus, he's responsible for what happens to Emilia Clarke in the movie... Admittedly, he doesn't face any REAL struggles. Most of the other characters warm up to him rather quickly... except Lando. I'm on the fence.... Lol. I had HIGH expectations for DP2. It was fun, but I was disappointed. I don't really want to see it again. Nothing stood out as special for me. I had LOW expectations for Solo, and judging by those expectations, I thought it was okay. You aren't missing anything by skipping it. :P
Don't know if you want to was an hour with this SPOILERS scene-by-scene thrashing of Solo, but it's the one I watched and enjoyed .. but dude takes like an HOUR!! How ya gonna call it a review when it's almost as longas the movie?!? :P Still, it's as close as I'm going to get to watching it: ua-cam.com/video/_bQbYmLAZ_k/v-deo.html SPOILERS (just in case someone is click-happy)
I admire that man's work-ethic! I've watched his 3-Part The Last Jedi review. VERY in-depth. I don't feel Solo deserves as much negativity as The Last Jedi. Then again, I always cared more about Luke when I was growing up. If you're passionate about Han Solo, then I understand. Anyway, it's cool to see many UA-camrs taking-off in popularity after their Last Jedi Reviews. I've been far too hesitant to "go for it" like them. I'm waiting to find my voice. Instead of just speaking my mind.
Kinda curious .. what's your start-to-finish time, and how much time do you spend editing after you've made your recording? Also I think you do have an individual voice, it leaves space for other opinions to breathe .. the other review guy doesn't. He has a very resolute position. -- Just depends on if you want to provoke thought and open to the audience up to possibilities or if you're just trying to convince them of something.
I'm very inefficient in my editing right now. Honestly, it takes a few 3-4 hour sessions to complete one review. Maybe 12-14 hours per review, spread out over a few days. It's been replacing video-games as my hobby. My current bottlenecks are the recording stage AND sorting through hundreds of photos for relevant movie stills, which match what I'm currently saying. It would be MUCH easier for me to just loop the trailer in the background. In the recording stage, I get too hung up on recording multiple takes of sentences, which means the original audio can be triple or quadruple the length of the final video. The recording for Solo was 1hr and 13mins... Ridiculous. That's where those bloopers come from! Should I be telling anyone this? Probably not. It's embarrassing, but you asked nicely. Thank you for reassuring me about my voice, Indy Jones.Take care.
Call me old fashioned, but I don't like cursing in Star Wars. It makes it too similar to reality. It dilutes the fantasy and other worldliness of the Star Wars universe. How hard would have been to just make up a new word as a Star Wars substitute?
I agree, Master. It definitely took me out of the moment. In Empire Strikes Back, Han's "Then I'll see you in hell!" could be criticized for the same reason.... but an implied, "S***!," crosses the line for me.
If you consider L3 as an SJW caricature from Lorde and Miller, that part is much more enjoyable. I didn’t know this takes place after episode 3, which makes a cameo from a certain character at the end of the movie VERY confusing for me.
Interesting. My knowledge of the Producer's politics, coupled with the sympathetic moments with L3 later on, made me assume L3 is to be taken seriously. She's comic relief, but we're meant to be laughing with her, not at her. Like, "Equal Rights! You tell 'em girl!" Though apparently, I missed an eye-roll by one of the other characters? I didn't hate her, but I am still conflicted over what the filmmakers were going for... is it just a funny bit? Or will this become an actual droid issue in future stories? Regarding the cameo: the TV shows, Clone Wars and Rebels, are official canon, and that character was brought back in those shows. I wonder if this was a one-off appearance...?
Perhaps L3 is purposefully designed to be some thing that can be laughed at or laughed with depending on your point of view. Her voice though - is just terrible.
That's clever. You're probably right, 90 Lancaster. I also realize the hypocrisy of me calling her "loud." Maybe I should mellow out. Go more easy-listening.

Indeed. I was never really a fan of uncivilized language to begin with. A strong "Blast It" would be the worst you'd hear me saying.
If you consider L3 as an SJW caricature from Lorde and Miller, that part is much more enjoyable. I didn’t know this takes place after episode 3, which makes a cameo from a certain character at the end of the movie VERY confusing for me.

I wish they could just redo the movie.
Dp2 and now this you spoil us
Making up for a couple missed weeks! Hope you enjoy them, MoonSun is Life.
haha
Where are you? Hope you are OK
Thank you, Mike. I'm finally doing better. May start editing a review soon. Take Care!
