Putting the vibrams outsole is a super affordable way to protect the leather outsole from water/oils we may step into, this includes to toilet as well.
And when it gets worn down, it’s a $50 thing as compared to a $150 and above resole
Also, you get to protect the original leather outsole

#pvv i bought my first pair of loafers in 2022, but they got plataform heels. I don't know the exact model, but they are Steve Madden's. I got them at the time for 170 CA dollars (with taxes!), and they are lasting me well! they got a little bit of crease, and the sole of the shoes is starting to separate. But i love them, and I wore the hell out of them. I would go half a size down now, because after breaking them in they got much loser. But they are super comfortable, even with the plataform heels, and i've worn them out in the city, in festivals, concerts, etc.

Great overview! Shoemakers I suggest because they have loafers (made in the USA) in their catalog at various middle range prices includes: Allen Edmonds, Alden, Rancourt & Co., Yuketen, and Oat Street Bootmakers. All but the last shoemakers in this list include narrow to wider widths and come in a variety of leathers. For those seeking a leather that will stretch to conform to your feet, please consider Horween’s Cromexcel or suede leathers. Calf skin, corrected grain, or shell cordovan leathers are stiff and won’t really stretch as much.
Edit: high quality shoes made of high quality leather benefits greatly from inserting wooden shoe trees after every wear to minimize creasing at the camp. I also strongly suggest grabbing a cream conditioner to ensure the leather remains supple and doesn’t dry out. Once leather dries it increases the risk of cracking where creases are naturally formed. Add wax after conditioning with the cream conditioner for extra shine.

Thanks for this video. I actually got some heel pads for my loafers, not for comfort, but to help them to fit better, since with a loafer you want a snug fit so they don't slip off. :). I've had really good luck with loafers in the $250-350 range with Justin Fitzpatrick's shoes, CNES, or Septième Largeur. All of them are high quality for the price point, and I love all three brands.

Great vid, I got a pair of doc marten adriens second hand for $30 a few years ago and have worn them to death. Super comfy shoe to me. I have a pair of prada loafers (no logo) ones from around 2010, they have a similar thick midsole to the Jacques solitaire and it often comes off, because it is glued rather than stitched into the sole. I have to get them reglued quite often and the cobbler said this is a downside of this kind of hard thick midsole is when your foot creases it pulls the glue. The Guccis appear to be stitched into the sole and I don’t think they would have the same problem

Overall happy with the purchase and loafers are def becoming a mainstay in my wardrobe going forward

Great discussion about loafers. G.H. Bass is a great entry for experimenting with loafer style. Affordable, versatile and look great when new or beat up when wearing casual pieces. The only downside is that the upper is genuine leather on their iconic styles (lowest quality leather). Although they do offer higher quality leathers on some of their newer styles.
In the mid range category, $200-$300 is entry level for quality GYW & Blake stitch shoes in general. Wide array of brands in this space. High end leathers but corners will be cut in the materials of areas of heel stack, heel counter, inside liners, and midfoot. $400-$500, expect all materials of GYW & BS are top notch.
Over $500, you're paying for brand status which leads me to Gucci bit loafers. $1k for a shoe that is not designed to be resoled and thrown out and replaced after 6-9 months of wear. A total waste of $ if you believe in buying better, buying less. Gucci bit loafer alternatives:
    - Allen Edmonds Verona II
    - Jay Butler Milbank.

Managed to cop a brown JM Weston 180 loafer for only a $100 in a used marketplace, didn't know they go for like $800 in retail. It's like the best of the best loafers for me atm, the same seller has one with the black colorway as well and I'm looking to buy it from him also.
Hopefully you can review the said loafer as well in the future, Drew!! Thank you so much! I think they only have stores in Japan and France tho.

This video makes me want to get a pair of loafers! As a longtime New Yorker I wouldn't even think about wearing leather soled shoes without first getting rubber soles put on, it really will make your shoes last so much longer... my mom instilled that in me. You will probably figure that out soon.

  • @mikegraves3497

Gucci for the average guys income means we wouldn’t be valuing our budget - and are probably buying them for others to notice if we’re being honest , which most the people we know could care less , and if they do, their shallow. Much better options for 2/3 the price - Bobbie’s for one has the same silhouette great leather , quality build - but it’s a loafer it’s meant to be worn casually for the most part - at least the Gucci silhouette ,and if you have the money to burn , hey enjoy the name brand !

Yo Drew! Love the content as always. Just a few things I’d like to add. I feel there should’ve been a nod to some of the classic heritage brands. I was surprised there was no mention of Alden, Allen Edmonds, Rancourt, Carmina, Crockett & Jones, etc.
These brands would fit very nicely in the $400+ range. And in my opinion would blow the Guccis out of the water in terms of quality and craftsmanship for its price. For $900 at Alden you would get the quintessential ivy style loafer in the leisure hand sewn in cordovan shell. Its hand made in the United States, will last you forever, can be resoled. Best part as you mentioned is that you can get these second hand for a fraction of the retail price. I’ve seen Alden shell loafers for as low as $200 on eBay and Poshmark. Their calfskin and suede options are fantastic as well. Shoe mart sells these options at great prices marked as factory seconds.
Alden while not the inventor of the penny loafer, in my opinion perfected it with the leisure hand sewn. They can however take credit for inventing the tassel loafer, which you’ve shown some examples of in the vid.
Most of what I said about Alden also applies in some form or manner to the other heritage brands I’ve mentioned. Yes they are expensive, but these are shoes that will last you a lifetime time if taken care of, and can be had a very affordable prices on the secondary market.
Here’s my recommendation for loafers in the $200 and $900 plus range that were not mentioned in your video.
    $200-$300
Sebago: classic American brand, hand sewn on certain models, imported. (Dan loafer, Ryan loafer) $
Blackstock & Weber: fantastic option for the streetwear enthusiast transitioning to loafers. Double stack soles for the short kings and wide foot friendly. (Ellis & mason loafers) $$
Velasca Milano: made in Italy, lots of modern and classic styles at affordable prices. I see them in the same tier as Morjas. (Piugiatt) $$
    $400-$900
Alden: Classic American heritage brand. The last great American shoe maker as some say. (Leisure hand sewn loafers, tassel) $$$
Crockett & Jones: one of uk finest shoe makers. Been around for over a 100 years + (Boston & Harvard loafers) $$$
These two would be where I would start if I wanted to invest in timeless footwear that will last ages. Both can be had for a fraction of their retail prices when you look for second hand options.
Also wanted to mentioned that many of the top heritage brand source their materials from the best factories in the world when it comes to footwear.
Horween tannery in Chicago is the goat when it comes to shell cordovan and leather. So much that most overseas shoemakers who want to be taken seriously use horween on their high end products.
C F Stead is where it’s at when it comes to suede. You won’t find a pair of Alden suede shoes without it.
Thought you’d appreciate that last bit since you’re all about quality and sourcing great materials.

i had huge issues with the doc martens at first in terms of comfort too but after 1 month of breaking them, they became the most comfortable shoe i ever wore. To be fair, in the beginning i had to put on 3 layers of socks to not cry but give them time, run, sleep and just live in them for a few weeks and after that, they will look better and are very comfortable - especially for the price👍

Interesting video and well put together as always. #PVV I own a number of loafers and was interested by your Gucci comments. I have owned maybe 3 pairs for maybe 10 years and I can confirm that they stand the test of time. You may want to add a Vibram sole to extend the life of the sole. My loafer collection includes Church’s, Bottega Veneta, JM Weston, Prada and I have just ordered some Eel skin loafers from The Row. Of all the pairs I own I would say the JM Weston pairs are the best from a perspective of quality, craftsmanship, style and durability. Their triple sole loafers are simply amazing if you want a heavier and more substantial pair.

Carmina's XIM last is a faithful recreation of the Gucci 1953 horsebit, and it's made to a higher quality standard with better leather. It's blake stitched too, for flexibility / comfort, it's part of the Italian approach. Single leather sole, kind of an effortless vibe. The only reasons to get Gucci are a. history (Gucci invented the horsebit) and a straight up love of the brand.

I'm currently looking for a pair of loafers but i can't find my sizing needs met anywhere. I need a 38 to 37 in order not to slip out, but they also need tpo be wider (regular imo, most are super slim)

With regard to the blake stitch single sole construction: It is done for the optimal streamline sleek and more elegant look. You're right that it's not made to last because the person routinely buying $1000 shoes isn't too worried about spending another $1000 when they wear out. It also kind of prices other people out of the market and provides the status you mentioned.
Think of it like this: Jaguar was notorious for constantly breaking down and needing servicing. When Jaguar started making their cars more dependable the owners were upset because it meant us poor normies were going to start buying them and it stripped them of that aforementioned status. 🤷‍♂

Gucci loafers are decent, but are worth about 400 bucks in reality.
To put things into perspective, I just bought a made to order pair of Carmina horsebit loafers, half alligator/half calf leather, and they cost me 770 bucks, including shoe trees and metal toe plates.

Tlb Mallorca and Carmina both have a horsebit style loafer for a lot cheaper. Shoe nerds have argued that they are higher quality than the Gucci for cheaper

I feel like there’s some misrepresentation of leather bottom shoes here. I wore leather bottom Johnston and Murphy shoes every day during my sales job and now they are a buttery soft joy to wear. Whenever the wedding dance floor has me shuffling all night, I am unphased. We used to walk like 10 miles a day during that job on polished cement.

I been looking for a good pair of lug loafers. But I have flat feet causing me to over pronate. Making my foot wide when it isn’t. I can’t find a good pair of loafers that fit me due to this issue. And I’m afraid to buy online because so many have come and don’t fit well so I have to return them

Quality depends on the construction and leather type. Your Adrian's hurt because it's a heavily corrected grain leather (plastic, acrylic coated) which does not give or stretch.
Not all CG leather are bad, as some vintage models of Allen Edmonds, Dexter, Sebago, Bass, in the 80s that use CG got softer over time and rarely cracked. But the same can not be said of today's CG.
The Adrian are also NOT GYW and the sole is instead vulcanised, or melted onto the upper. It's likely not worth a resole.
Your Morjas are the best quality overall in your collection! I'd recommend Alden, JM Weston, Gaziano & Girling, Edward Green, Crockett & Jones, TLB, Carmina, Meermin, just to name a few fantastic shoemakers I've personally had experience with.
Though I'm biased towards my USA made Alden's, my favourite model is their low-vamp full-strap penny. I have also have two Alden tassels too. Meermin is a great beginner brand at $200 for GYW footwear!

Beware going second hand especially if they are well worn in. Others feet are different and once you start wearing it can cause terrible unsightly break and creasing

Bought the classic GH Bass ones the other day as a gift as I completed my training being a special education teacher.

Even if dr marten claims they are goodyear welted, they really are not, they are thermo fused which takes away all the properties that come with a standard gyw. So there is no point in mentioning the gyw imo
