I really love negative paintings, BUT, I took so long to just draw the simple flowers!! I'm leaving the first layer to dry overnight and will tackle it again tomorrow. Hopefully it will look better in the morning, things usually do. Thank you for your beautiful work.
I get that! I wish I'd went about it differently. Try this approach instead next time: Paint the whole paper with a very light wash of colors. Then dry with a hairdryer. Draw a couple of flowers then paint everything but the flowers. Dry Draw a couple more flowers again and paint everything but the flowers you just drew AND the ones you drew before .Let dry. Repeat again Then paint ALL the negative space something bold and dark. I hope that helps. Feel free to join my online class every Thursday evening. You can paint with me or paint with the recording afterwards. Have fun!!
That makes me so happy! Yes, give it a try. And if you want a little more weekly practice, I'd be happy to let you join one of my online Thursday Things classes. It's such a fun group. Let me know if you're interested, and I'll send you the code.
Thank you for this! I’ve never tried this technique before. I’m a beginner and still getting the hang of this medium. It is soooo challenging but so fun. I’m going to try this later in the afternoon at our community studio time….🦋
You are so welcome! Should you ever want a little more help, consider joining my Thursday Things online class. It's a super fun group of about 15 ladies. We paint a new little 5"x7" every Thursday, and you get the recording of the class too, should you want to paint on your own at a different time. I was new to this medium about nine years ago, so I still remember the challenges and the beauty with watercolor. :) Have fun!
You certainly can! That would work just as well. It might require quite a bit of masking fluid, but that’s ok. As for me, I love detail. So working around all the negative space is really fun for me.
Hi Kay. I apologize for not responding sooner. These paints are Bianyo and are the ones I use for my online classes. Otherwise, in my studio I always use Winsor & Newton tube paints. Here's the link for the ones in this video. :) www.amazon.com/Bianyo-Watercolor-Professional-Painting-Coloring/dp/B01GWWY690/ref=asc_df_B01GWWY690/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167129414796&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15654113765423908218&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9018667&hvtargid=pla-314279095381&psc=1
I would've said the same thing when I was just starting out. lol. You could always do this in multiple sittings. So, start with the first step then walk away for a day or so. Come back to it for the next step. There's no right or wrong way. :)
Oh, that's a tough one to answer. It depends on so many things: your type of watercolors, the brand of watercolors, how pigmented the brand is, etc. What I can say is watercolor painting has a much higher ratio of water than paint. Try experimenting a little on some scrap watercolor paper until you get a good feel for how pigmented your watercolors are. You're always welcome to join my weekly Thursday evening classes too! You can see my Thursday Things class on my website. www.slarsonwatercolors.com.
I always use Winsor & Newton tube paints. I squeeze out the entire contents into the wells on my palette and let them dry. Just a little water reactivates them.
Love it.

Why not use masking fluid on flowers?

What is ratio water to paint when painting the background colors

آبرنگت چ مارکی هست؟

However, the ones I'm using in this particular recording is a brand I purchases on Amazon but I"m not sure of the brand.
