In this video I will show you how I painted these nasturtium flowers step-by-step, and walk you through detailed examples of how negative painting technique can enhance your watercolor work and allow you to create beautiful effects, including:
    1. Adding beautiful backgrounds to your watercolor images, with lots of visual interest.
    2. Creating smooth edges, without paint “leaking” from one object to another.
    3. Painting the finest details without having to use messy masking fluid - including flower stamens and leaf veins.
    4. Creating a better sense of of light by adjusting the “temperature” of your watercolors across large areas of paper (from warm to cold colors and back)
    5. Creating better contrast by modifying values (light/dark)

New generation of children should be taught to color outside the line. I remember in school my teacher will say over and over " Make sure you color inside the line" Now I struggle with my mind to grasp negative painting technique. I just have to practice every day. You do beautiful work thank you.

What I learned from this tutorial is the white edge perimeter of the leaves. I've been practicing botanical leaves and negative painting on the veins but hadn't realized to do that on the edges of those in direct light. So beautiful, Anna and you make it look so easy!

Absolutely stunning. I have been taking watercolor classes for a few years. I’ve been drawn to pours with masking off each dried value layers. Building darker values on top, masking, pouring until the darkest layer. I was been disappointed when removing the masking material since it lifts paint. I’m really interested in this technique. I will give it a try. Thanks for sharing your artwork.

Please, please, please, do a tutorial about negative painting on skillshare. It looks so easy, but once I tried it, I got totally confused about all the layers. Which part of the painting was layer 2, which one 3, which 4. Which one do I have to paint now, which one later, which one with which color and intensity. Layer one seemed easy, but wasn't. Backruns occurred with the big washes, the paper dried out. Which coloured should I use? Finally I messed up the whole thing and did not find the turn to a good painting which often happens after a ugly state. I plan to try this one, but skillshare offers more time to talk about the detail. So, if you can find the time, I will be pleased to take a skillshare lesson from you on this topic.
