don't be so impressed by his picking. he's probably picked this lock 19247889326749 times before making this video. he knows exactly what to do in order to pick it. it's not an easy lock to pick, don't worry.

I think the Multi Lock deters the raking and low skilled pickers. Generally I have had good performance from them, one on our garage, my significant other lost her key and called 3 different locksmiths, all declined to try and pick the lock!
The problem is one of motivation. Why spend thousands of hours developing and maintaining picking proficiency when you can charge a customer far more to drill and replace a lock? Or am I too cynical?

Two notes on Japan: 1) it's an island nation, so the Ocean is usually not too far away. 2) Apartment doors are usually on the "outside", meaning the staircase and corridor is not internal.

When I come across an old lock that is dirty, I use a little WD-40 it makes it almost like new. Thx for the vid. I haven't came across these locks yet, but at least I kno it can be picked.

I think that someone could easily break into my place if they wanted to, but the crime rate is so low in the part of Tokyo where I am that some people still leave their houses unlocked. I have a friend who lived in Yokohama for over 20 years and never once locked her door. She never had a problem. Recently, I left the key in my bike lock by mistake after I parked it in public near a train station and left it there for the whole day - and it was fine. One day last year, the road near my house was covered with 10,000 yen bills (about $100 each). There were thousands of dollars. People came out of their houses and we all gathered it up carefully and took it to the police station together. There was never even a moment when it crossed anyone's mind to do anything different. Turns out someone had a bag with a house deposit in it fall out of their bike. The cliche about Japan and honesty is true - at least where I live!
Can you please also post links in the video description area to the things you use - tensioner, pick, disassembling plate, guide tube, etc. It is very interesting and would be helpful for buying the right stuff.

+BangDroid A spring loaded captive "detent" (more like a pin) is present in the core. When the key is inserted, the "detent" pushes the interactive element, which in turn pushes the corresponding pin. The Interactive element is a captive pin inside the key, which ensures that key duplication requires special equipment which is only available to the manufacturer. I am not sure if the interactive element have a variable size.
I'm trying my hand at Mul-T-Lock but never really managed to succeed. I have a Classic, MT5, and Interactive to play with but admittedly I just have standard pick sets so I don't really have any flag picks. Anybody got recommendations for a good flag set(s)?
Do you think a Mul T Lock interactive is adequate security for a home? Do you think an average criminal would be able to bypass the lock? Assuming that kick prevention is in place so the criminal can't just kick in the door. Thanks!
Thanks! It was a decision between an MT5+ or an Interactive+ and the key control on the MT5+ made getting a key in the case of a lockout a pain (safe deposit the key card because without it you get no key) vs. the interactive where the locksmith can keep the key info on file without requiring the card. Not to say that MT5+ isn't more secure (in part because of key control) but I don't believe the added security is necessary for the situation. Also, the locksmith said that interactive+'s use different key ways for each locksmith for residential locks so bump keys would be hard to obtain if not impossible.

I have this cheap chinese padlock from ebay that I only picked once. It's utter crap, but still a lot harder than a no.3. Also after I took the plastic 'weather' protection off, part of the lock, the bible, is plastic!

Where do you live that lock picking tools are illegal? Here in the US there are no places that I know of where it is illegal to own lock picking tools.

I watched a 4 minute AD, to build anticipation.
In Japan they pride themselves on having locks that are "un-pickable" then they install all the doors with the hinges on the outside.

Japan is very civilised, apart from some history.
Since Japan is such a small country, with a small population, i doubt its different in other regions.

It's only good for key control, like the passive pins. It's a vendor lock-in disguised as a security feature (only the manufacturer can make keys).

No the bezel was essentially being moved by the outer of the lock, wouldnt have made a difference at all.
