The best fix for that joint is a rubber pipe coupler.
The best fix for that joint is to use a rubber pipe coupler.
We wanted to do that but couldn't find one that fit this size. Only 3" and 4" pipe couplers at the hardware store and this one is in between those sizes
The slot in the coupler appears to be for an O-ring to make a better seal. Don't know if the first repair, the one that failed on you, was quickly done without a proper O-ring connection. Making repairs like this are very satisfying.
Got to agree. Looks like an o-ring should be on that pipe.
I had the same issue this year with our Redwood. What really annoyed me was how the plumbing angled down out of the tank and then had to go slightly back up into the main pipe, creating a low spot that always holds water. I'm not sure if it was designed that way to keep sewer fumes from getting back in, but we stay up north in the winter, and with temperatures as low as -40, it's a liability to hold water. Anyway, sorry for the rant. Great job, David!
I'm in the process of installing a new black tank in a custom build and had the coupler separate from the new tank like yours (user error). The factory seal on the new one seemed to be dicor like yours. I think it's a plumbers putty but that's just a guess. What a royal pain to remove for resealing! I used 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 to reconnect. It's in the process curing right now so hoping for the best. My tank will be buried and hard to get to so this better work well!
Oh man how could I have forgotten about 3M 5200?! I JUST used it to repair my truck's camper shell and this would have been a perfect application for that! Thank you so much for reminding me if this fix ends up not working. 3M 5200 is some insanely tough stuff and remains flexible, I wish I would have remembered it. Your connection will never break again! This is why I love sharing my repair jobs with you guys, I learn so much from you all in the comments about better ways to do things. Instead of 5200 though I think 4200 would be better since a non-permanent version in case you need to change the tank or something.
Good informational video. A quick, easy fix. You make it look so easy and simple. Thanks,
Thanks! I would have used a coupler if I could find one in this size but we're kinda out in the middle of nowhere so I had to get creative.
And you are very creative.
Thank you for sharing this situation with us.
You're welcome!
😂 I swear, when I saw the thumbnail I thought of Jessie's friend from Breaking Bad... 😂
Good to see you David. We missed ya. I know life gets in the way. But it’s nice to see you again. Say hello to Roe for us.
Great job. You do wonderful videos to show how you repair and fix things. Very helpful.
Hi David, it's always good to learn DIY RV repair. Beautiful camp site - will you tell us where it is? General, even the state will do. Thank you!
Looks like a factory design and construction failure.
New puppy??? Where’s Sweetie??
Good thing it was on the gray tank and not the black!
Where is the o-ring that fits on the male end of the pipe!
Dude great to see you guys
Thanks Paul 😁
Rotate the second hose clamp 180 degrees
I'm genuinely curious as I don't know, but why would that make a difference?
@@FateUnbound these hose clamps you're using don't apply equal pressure all around.
Good stuff,David. Thanks for more useful information!
Thanks Chris!
Thank for this great video! THOR RV are real junk
Winnebago uses fernco rubber couplings for the gray tank piping and it makes a lot of sense for absorbing shocks from driving. Your fix looks good to me and if it holds up for thr next 3-500 miles its probably good!
Was that a heating pad under the tank that was coming unstuck? I'm expecting another video. I don't know how flexible that tank is but hose clamps see like a strange choice without a hose coupler as someone mentioned already. And yes, as former boaters all double hose clamps are to be install with one 180 degrees from the other. They are the only thing that keeps you boat from sinking! And that groove does look like an o-ring should go there. Pretty sure previous owner did poor job there.
You are so lucky it was not the black tank! Hey love to see you spend sometime out in the wilds with a dog or two. I am looking towards next year being on the road with my pups and would love to see dog friendly areas in the western USA area
Awesome video. Thanks. My wife and I are getting ready to go full-time and we are watching videos to learn how to do our own repairs.
Nice job David you definitely have to have some patience to tackle the old sealant removal.
Looks like it had a groove for an 0 ring seal . Be careful stay safe
The male end of the pipe is called a waste holding tank transitioning hub and it should have an o-ring that goes in that groove.
Great job 😊
Outstanding
Thanks Scott and Charlotte!
Well done.🎉
