At the time the song was written, the “Troubles” in Northern Ireland were at their height. The IRA continued their terror campaign against the British government’s involvement and presence in Northern Ireland and attacks on the British mainland were commonplace. 20 March 1993 was a Saturday - the busiest shopping day of the week and a time when lots of children were out buying Mother's Day cards and presents to give that Sunday. In the North Western town of Warrington, Cheshire, the IRA had planted bombs in cast iron dustbins: one outside the local Boots and McDonalds and the other outside the nearby Argos. The terrorists phoned Merseyside police just before midday with a coded warning that there was a bomb outside a Boots - but they didn't say which town. When one bomb exploded in Warrington 25 minutes later, panicked crowds ran directly into the path of the second explosion. Three year old Johnathan Ball died at the scene, while 12-year-old Tim Parry was seriously injured. He died five days later after his life support was switched off. 54 other people suffered injuries. Hailing from Limerick in South Ireland, The Cranberries were on tour in the UK in March 1993, supporting the release of their debut LP that same month entitled Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? Zombie was a direct response from the Irish musicians to the horror of Warrington and all the other atrocities that had taken place, pleading: "Another mother's breaking / Heart is taking over / When the violence causes silence / We must be mistaken." When she sings "bombs" twice in a row, its to represent the loss of the two young boys that died during the bombing. 😢
Except you are leaving out the other parties involved in the Troubles and the reason they exist is the British Government, British army , the loyalist , the UDA and the RUC ... they bombed, shot and tortured the civilians and members ...
@@ko0974But the reason behind why they wrote this song was specifically about the IRA bombing in Warrington…. Here’s Delores own words on the subject. “There were a lot of bombs going off in London and I remember this one time a child was killed when a bomb was put in a rubbish bin -- that's why there's that line in the song, 'A child is slowly taken,'" O'Riordan told Songwriting Magazine. "We were on a tour bus and I was near the location where it happened, so it really struck me hard - I was quite young, but I remember being devastated about the innocent children being pulled into that kind of thing. So I suppose that's why I was saying, 'It's not me' - that even though I'm Irish it wasn't me, I didn't do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension." She told Vox magazine in 1994 that the song was written in part as a mechanism to grapple with her identity as an Irish citizen that did not support the actions of the IRA. "The IRA are not me. I'm not the IRA. The Cranberries are not the IRA. My family are not. ... When it says in the song, 'It's not me, it's not my family,' that's what I'm saying. It's not Ireland".
It was written after the Warrington bombing by the IRA and killed three year old Jonathan Ball and twelve year old Tim Parry. She called the bombers Zombies and that it wasn't done in her or her family's name. Respect to Dolores.
The song is a comment on "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland between Republicans (Catholics) & Loyalists (Protestants) and the Armed conflict that has been going on there until fairly recently
She is singing about the war in Northern Ireland between Protestants and Catholics. Her wailing is known as keening in the Gaelic language, and is a wail for the dead!
I'm going to go easy on you guys because the song hits hard when you understand the back story. The backdrop is the 'Troubles' in Northern Ireland which was a historical conflict between on one side (Catholics) fighting for a united Ireland, the other (Protestants) wanting to stay as part of the United Kingdom. The British Army were the soldiers in the video assigned to keep the peace between the two sides. The song was written after IRA (Catholic) terrorists killed two young boys (3 & 12) in England with a bomb placed in a trash can in a busy shopping area (1993). Zombies refers to the mindless actions of terrorists caught up in the past. That's a simplified version of complex events played out over hundreds of years. Thankfully both sides have (mostly) given up fighting with bombs and guns and are living a largely peaceful existence although tensions do rise from time to time. Hope this helps, Peace.
singer Dolores O’Riordan was slated to go into a London studio on Monday (Jan. 15) to record her vocals for a cover of her band’s iconic 1994 hit “Zombie” by the hard rock act Bad Wolves. she wanted to add her own magic to the track slated for their upcoming debut album. O’Riordan was found dead on Monday in her London hotel room, and never made it to the studio that day. So, on Friday (Jan. 19), the group released their cover It is important to note that Bad Wolves’ cover of “Zombie” is a loving tribute as well they finishing this and donating proceeds to her children.
