  • Range Hood Install Notes + Specifics
    Picking a range hood: A ton of people remodel their kitchens and get rid of perfectly good range hoods on Marketplace. I was also able to find a decent selection of dented NIB ones within a reasonable driving distance. As mentioned in the video be sure that the range hood you choose is VENTED. There are some that just filter and recirculate air; that is not what you want. If you are going through all this work, it doesn't make sense to skimp on the CFM (cubic feet per minute). I would recommend getting something at least 275. That said, if you go too crazy with it (400+), you might end sucking up air faster than your wood stove can heat it.
    Placing your vent: With a combination of measurements and tapping on the upstairs floor, we were able to get a pretty good idea of where to put the vent. I drilled a small hole in the grout (relatively easy to match and fill) to confirm the placement. I then traced around the register using a paint stick as a spacer (to allow room for duct). When you make your cut, "take the line"...the lip on your floor register will be able to cover the floor hole, even if its a little too big. Most importantly, make sure all wires and pipes are clear before you drill or make your cuts!!!
    Cutting your hole: Cutting a vent opening in tile was the worst case scenario. If you are cutting in carpet or a hardwood floor, it will be much easier. In my case, I used a 4 inch tile wet saw, multiple drill holes to make enough space for a jig saw, then a reciprocating saw to finish the cuts. For a less aggressive / slower cut, I used a metal blade instead of a wood blade.
    Finishing the job: After I had the range hood placed, I cut my duct to the proper length. First, I taped it to the floor register end. Then I slid the duct down through the floor opening, and pushed it onto range hood vent flange. Last, I taped the duct to the range hood using high heat tape.
    Let me know if you have any questions!

    I did that same thing with my first woodstove here about 30 years ago. We replaced our old stove hood with a microwave oven so I used the old hood like you did. Only mine had a plastic fan blade and ended up melting eventually. So I decided to replace the hood with a sheet metal jacket around the stove and used a small squirrel cage fan to blow the heat upstairs. That heated our house for about 10 years until I replaced it with a wood furnace.

    Hello,
    I was looking at ur chicken coop then started looking at this. I don't really understand. I live in Texas but I do have an old wood stove in my pool house because I don't have hvac in it. Is there any take away for me or just like 2 story placea?

      I don’t think there’s any take away for you. This setup would be good if you are trying to get the heat from one floor to the floor above it.

    Eric, can you confirm this made a big difference in the upstairs floor? I’m considering doing the is but would like to make sure the effort is worth the payoff

      It absolutely did! 100% worth your time , effort, and the initial expense. My parents basement wood stove is now their primary source of heat upstairs . Please let me know how the project goes for you 👍

      @@E_Fleming someone brought to my attention that running the vent hood above the stove would affect the draft for the air intake on the stove. have you noticed anything?

    • @E_Fleming
      @E_Fleming  Рік тому

      Sorry for the delay. I don’t think it had any effect on the air intake. Did you end up installing a range hood and are you pleased with the results?

      I recently moved into a new home and made a similar modification on a smaller scale. I put one of these in second floor bedroom over first floor pellet stove. It pulls the air up through register over stove and into bedroom. We haven’t had to turn on our heat in bedroom yet 👍👍👍www.amazon.com/AC-Infinity-Register-Thermostat-Control/dp/B0792QR5YT/ref=asc_df_B0792QR5YT/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=242000691778&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5484044080410040028&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9007417&hvtargid=pla-408270482310&psc=1

    Have you ever done the thing where you put hot sauce in your chickens eggs so that they will learn not to eat their eggs because they don’t like hot sauce?

      I have not….that’s interesting though. My chickens never discovered that their eggs taste good, fortunately!
