This free video guitar lesson is for the beautiful fingerstyle guitar piece "Romance". It is very well known in the classical guitar world and is a great workout for using bar chords.
All of the video guitar lessons and TAB for this song can be found here: www.guitarlesso...
Take your time with the stretches, especially in the second half of the tune. Learn to adjust the pressure of the bar chord to be able to use as little pressure as possible in order for the notes to sound in the chord. As long as you are focused on minimal pressure it will eventually become second nature.
For the right hand, try and practice the arpeggio pattern by itself on open strings before adding the left hand. It is very important to get the prepared strokes down comfortably before putting the two hands together.
Have Fun with this beautiful piece!

I have found that if you hold the guitar that rock style way where the guitar is horizontal it's really difficult. I have been doing that for two years with electric and have gotten really good at barres on that and the Jimi Hendrix thumb over the neck thing. But now that i am getting into classical i do indeed realize that you have to hold it in that classical fashion to do the barres far down due to the way the classical guitar is built. Barres are generally easier if you hold the guitar in that classical fashion

small tip that worked for me for the barre chords of this piece: try moving your index finger a little up. Notice that when he barres his index is sticking out above the fret a little.

For anyone stuck on the bar chord, you have a second option. You can do a half-bar (which is way easier), and instead of playing the `E` as a bass note, play the `A` string, keeping the melody line the same. But be warned, this makes the transition to the seventh position bar harder. Hope this helped.

    • @JustAyedan
      @JustAyedan 3 роки тому +3

Sometimes for bar chords you have to build a callus on your left index finger as well as build the strength of that finger. For the part with the 5th fret barred if you can bar all the strings you can just bar the 1st 2nd and 3rd string with the index and play an open A note for the bass note. As for the Bar chord at the 7th fret you're gonna have to build your strength. I was surprised to see i couldnt barr the chords anymore. I've been playing too much heavy metal. Beautiful song though. Thanks for the lesson.

I know this is an old post and you probably don't pay attention to it but I'll comment on it anyway. I've been a guitar player for over 45 years semi-professionally and this is one of the pieces I have played. I have seen this played over the years in so many different ways - it's like seeing a dish made in different ways. But you play it the "traditional" way. So many players spruce it up and fancy it up that it's like trying to put legs on a snake or gilding the lily: they put too much sugar on the cereal. I'm sure you know what I mean. Anyway, thanks for showing it the plain, simple way. Cheers, mate! John.

Hey Carl, absolutely love your channel and have been supporting it for as long as I can remember first starting to play guitar. But anyhow, I was wondering if you could kindly create a "classical" guitar lessons playlist on your channel, it would be fantastic. While you only have a handful of classical lessons on your channel, including this one, that opens up room for suggestions, which you can then build off of that. I'm really glad to have you back man, keep up the guitar mastery! Thank you so much for being such an awesome guitar instructor. In my opinion, you're the best on UA-cam. Perhaps all around, haha.

For the bass note on the first two barre chord, you dont have to barre all of the string. You could just play the A string while barre-ing the GB & e string. As it is the same sound as the 5th fret of the E, G, B & e strings, therefore making it much easier for those with smaller hands or not strong enough hands to play it properly.

My technique for bars is to push my elbow away from my body so my arm is as close to perpendicular to the guitar as I can, since I usually play with my elbow tucked in at the side. It stops me from trying to do the bar with the side of my finger and more with the softer part (can't think of what that part of the hand is called. Also, to practice bars, use your index finger like normal, but put pressure on your index finger with your middle finger until you get all the strings sounding right so you know how much pressure to put on. Also don't practice bars for too long because it can really hurt your wrist and make you want to avoid them as much as you can

I first picked up a guitar nearly a week ago and I have been playing or practising plucking ever since (hence the painful fingers whilst I type xD). I was recommended this tune from some random person on the internet and came across this video. I'm only up to the first bar as we speak after two days, but this video has helped me out practising no end! It feels like I am progressing, nailing everything up to the bar after lots of repetative practise and alot of fails, and it is amazing. Sounds and feels so great. Thank you for this video! It is strengthening my fingers for other random plucking tunes and is just a great help. The dislikes can go do one, you're a great teacher for someone who wants to go it alone

Hmmm really want a classical guitar now! :) Doing this on a steel string is a bit awkward because hitting the low E gives to much bass for me and ruins it. Must buy a classical :)

Let me recommend the Yamaha c40. Its pretty damn good and pretty cheap too.

No problem. The only thing about the c40 i could complaint about is the strings that you get with the guitar. They are pretty low quality and breaks after a few weeks. But a simple restring ficed that issue :)

Well you couldn't have timed that one better Carl! I'm just about to teach someone this piece but, I'd forgot how to play it! This was a great refresher reminder. Oh, and beautifully played I have to add. I'm gonna take another listen to enjoy and, to learn from.
Hope you are well. Tony ;)

I did the Frederick Noad class too. His 2 books are still available and probably the best out there to learn guitar on your own.

Instead of trying to simply press down, try resting the side of your finger over the strings so that it's a more bony feeling instead of the more cushioned part of the finger. Though indeed it might be the strings and the tension necessary for tuning them correctly making them harder to press down.

Complicated piece if you want to play it well (including string vibrations with the little finger). Bar chords aren't simple, they involve finger extension training, adequate strength, and precision. It is an excellent fingering and pivot exercise. Hard track, not something you learn in a day, it involves a lot of training. I love songs like that, I think they lead to concentration, perseverance and understanding the importance of practice.

Hi Carl, I am really enjoying your piece of work. My question is : If I am into classical guitar, should I learn all the basic of guitar first ( e.g strumming, chord etc ) or directly jump into this? Regards

Thank you so much:) this is a wonderful lesson, the best I found for this piece by far....I'm just beginning and and my small hands are having trouble with the stretches and putting enough pressure on the chords....but I'm obsessed with getting the hang of it! and hey; practice makes perfect:)
