- In Overwatch, if you can take control of the high ground, you are often able to control the tempo of the game. Depending on the map, proper positioning that makes use of the verticality of the environment can make it challenging for an attacking team to capture an objective.
During the Shanghai Dragon's match against the New York Excelsior in the 2020 Overwatch League May Melee, we were given a master class performance in high ground control by the eventual champions of the tournament.
In today's video, we take a deep dive into how the Shanghai Dragons were able to pull off such a strong hold against the NYXL when defending King's Row.

Shanghai feels like that protagonist who lost most of their fights in the beginning but became invincible after their intense training arc.

@@dragaleoreforged3999 Although you may think that you're bad 'cause you're gold, it might not be your fault. I was stuck at low gold for a while, until i got a good team together, and I started doing so much better 'cause we had communication, teamwork, (and we were all decent at the game) climbed to high plat, and even diamond in support. I believe that teamwork is key in this game, and if you're at a rank with other unexperienced players, try to get a team, so you have an advantage over those who don't even use team chat.

Shanghai has had the biggest change out of anyone ever. They went from being the worst team in the league, not getting a single win to being almost unbeatable. I find that insane.

I love it when teams try something like this! It somehow reminds me of the Clockwork Vendetta Comp, a weird synergy between heroes and map is used together with individual skill and very good positioning.
I feel like that is how Blizzard intended the OWL and how it rlly should be played on this high level!

Really awesome breakdown of the positioning here. Something that's been on my mind a lot is how pro players are really differentiated from casual players, and the things I've seen most are (1) patience, (2) emphasis on map control through off-angles and high ground. A lot of players miss these things on ladder, but in the pro scene you see so much crazy stuff like this match.
Also the trust that they have with each other knowing that their teammates have their back to do risky plays is one of the highlights of watch OWL.

The stream is really action packed and you often can't appreciate the positioning of players in the heat of the moment so after watching the game we knew that we had to give the Shanghai Dragons a spotlight for the preparation they had planned out for defending King's Row.

Would have liked to see what classic/ modified Dive could accomplish. Holding from so many angles, the Dragons would be forced to collapse onto point. Fleta and Luffy would be priority targets. Take the high ground away from the enemy, surround and whittle them down.

SBB couldn't get the picks and NYXL didn't have an Orisa or any ranged displacement pressure. SBB should've played Widow or NYXL could've tried a Pharah Mercy strat but they didn't know what they were walking into.
NYXL can’t do much with high ground control, and they would have to then give it up for point control, and with Shanghai’s mobility they could just rotate back into control of high ground
On a side note mad respect for Xenoblade Music.
This is technically the best anti-goats comp, but ironically Brig is in it.
