An Introduction to Performance Art | TateShots

- Performance art relates to artworks that are created through actions performed by the artist or other participants, which may be live or recorded, spontaneous or scripted.
In the 1960s, performance was seen as fundamentally different from the art that could be collected or shown by art museums. It was live and ephemeral, challenging traditional notions of art.
But today performance has come to be seen as more a set of strategies available to contemporary artists, one that is not inherently different from other art forms and not at all beyond what a museum can and should show.
Now an accepted part of the visual art world, the term has since been used to also describe film, video, photographic and installation-based artworks through which the actions of artists, performers or the audience are conveyed.
Funded by The Arts and Humanities Research Council, this film reflects the ideas of the online publication 'Performance at Tate: Into the Space of Art' (Tate Research 2016): bit.ly/2lFsG5s
'Performance at Tate: Into the Space of Art' explores how concepts of art have changed in relation to recent shifts in artistic production and how artists have responded to the possibilities offered by museums.
The project offers essays and case studies, and publishes audio, films and videos, photographs, museum documents and reviews drawn from Tate's Archive, showing the richness and depth of the gallery's engagement with performance over half a century.

Art that refuses to settle...that's great
I'm baked as hell what the fuck is performance art

The undeniable influence of this material is profound. A book I read with similar insights was a transformative journey. "The Art of Meaningful Relationships in the 21st Century" by Leo Flint
Great performance! I Love what has been display. Am also a Nigerian Performance artist who uses multimedia action painting ( Alla Prima of Echo) to talk about societal issues. This area is still under-studied and applied by painters in Nigeria especially in responding to societal issues. The problem is how do artist respond to the burning life threatening matters in the world e.g environmental, health etc. The objectives of my performance is to bring painting closer to the public through the alla prima of Echo

Great video piece. Thanks
What isn’t performance art? If it is done right & executed well it is an art. Meaningful social experiments and characters portrayed in the public eye to serve a purpose are key examples of ‘performance art’.
Trump is art.
@@DarkAngelEU in a way, yes
@@stablefactory2394 People will tel stories of him like they do of Napoleon in Waterloo, Caesar being stabbed by Brutus, "great men" who signify change in the course of history by their own hubris.
Like Beuys said. Everyone is an artist.
that's bullshit.
Maravilloso
Nice film, thanks.

Great video with good references but, no Marina Abramovic?

SERIOUSLY! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought so!

I can think of better roles than moving cubes around but I did play that part
nice and helpful, thanks!
Very noice!👌
Muchas gracias amigo!
I'm a graphic designer that has just newly discovered a part of them that is a performance artist. The dilemma is that I'm more introverted and don't like so much attention on me! It's so frustrating cause I want to share some of these ideas brewing inside of me.
Lets go.
Though that is and may remain a dilemma... there are solutions to uncover! I've seen many artists including myself go through that journey at the venue I used to volunteer at (WORM, Rotterdam)!
@@TarikTJS where can we find your current work Tarik? I am interested in your journey

@@Tate I would be very grateful if they were also in Spanish since the examples made me understand a lot, but not everything
It's like a prank that was taken too seriously.
Anyway, i am starting to get interested in that concept. Seems there are many performers doing interesting presentations
Some of the stuff feels like a prank, but some performance art is incredibly interesting with a profound message.
1:04 tittle of this music pls

Hi po,can I use this video for educational content, thank you po.
Ok, so what performance art is?

Ecco perche' abbiamo lasciato l'arte e messa da parte
So why do I never hear Diogenes mentioned?
And what separates Marina Abramovic from Tony Clifton?
Is it possible that some of the objectively greatest performance artists were unaware they were performing?
Like dancing bears or plantation slaves? Did performance art seep into Auschwitz? I presume it must have.
Where does it differ from acting? How?
Is the World a Gallery or Stage Performance?
I mean,, even say,, 'Live at Cabaret Voltaire' - is that seen as very recent performance art?
Back to Diogenes and early Taoist teachers,, that was what? Middle Ages?
Were Neanderthals generally better at this than early Homosapiens?
Was this shit pre-bang?
Your Introduction's kinda vague on such issues.
I dont get the reason why someone would do it. Art that refuses to settle whats the point?
I'm sorry, I might be stupid but I don't see how a performance showing a person walking with shoes attached to the ankles is a comment on whatever you said it was. Could anyone explain? Thankss
Doc Martens were actually used by the police in England and she did this performance in an afro caribbean neighboorhood. So it represents the vulnerabilty of this marginalised community (the bare feet on the pavement) having to face the brutality and the control of the police (the shoes follow her wherever she goes, and doesn't let go of her feet). Also it's important to say that Mona Hatoum has palestinian origins, and while she never experienced the israelo palestinian conflict directly, it's definitely something that impacted her art. Hope this helps !
@@MinhAuzanneau Thank you so much! I always forget that to understand art you need context.
Those who can, make art. Those who can't, make performance art.

Performance is disturbing to me
as a performance artist, i feel we get to much of a bad reputation for being the "weird artsy lot" but in most cases were just going against the grain
me personally,
my performances are about showing that tedious boredom is important societally, i perform by just sitting in a lawn chair reading a book, thats all, and the message im trying to get across is that society relies to heavily on gimmicks and hooks to draw attention, bright lights loud noises and fancy graphics are all we need to be interested, whereas all i do is be myself, tedious and boring, which is the reality we try to avoid, most of our lives are dull and uneventful which is why we admire fancy things, its an anti societal statement about technological development
Performance art: post teenage angst and terrible actors
It's all bullshit. Fucking smug; sophomoric. Any meaning behind this type of "art" is lost through translation due to these facts. Ask 50 people what any given installation or show actually meant, and you'll get 50 answers. The "artist" will agree with each of them. Because they can't and won't admit the fact that they had no clear intention in the beginning, relying only on the assumption that the gullible crowd will infer intent regardless.
And they always do.
Fine arts is art.
Writing can be an art.
Music is an art.
Performance is an art.
"Performance art" is *NOT* an art.
But the artist facilitates these ideas or this discussion. I think you are at a great starting point.
Modern art and performance art is fucking weird and terrible
This is absolute bullshit.
