About the door protectors. I have them on my Ford Fiesta, called the "Door Edge Protectors". In the 4,5 years I have driven the Fiesta never had any troubles. In my Fiesta the mechanism works with some rod from the inside of the door touching the bodywork near the hinge, being pulled in when the door closes which will pull in the door protector.
Very good review of the Scala. The 4 cyl 1.5ltr engine seems the better option with the DSG box. It's interesting to note that this Monte Carlo version is still fairly comfortable at speed and around built up areas, one of the best reviews I've seen of this car. Excellent..
